I went to an estate sale recently and picked up a Model 2 Genesis with two 6-button controllers for $30. Then I was doing some research and learned a little bit about the different models they made. Of course I had to get the "High Definition Graphics" Genesis now. I own a Genesis 3; I don't want to come off as rude, but it being third party is a misconception. While it wasn't assembled/marketed directly by them, its parts were manufactured by Sega. It has the guts of a late-revision MD2, which has all of Sega's marks, with 1998 copyright (now in all fairness, you really have to either disassemble one or look at photos of the PCB to know for sure).
Otherwise, this is a great video. I've been an MD fan for a long while and have several revisions of the thing, including a Nomad and Multimega/CDX.

    • @RetroGamerBoy

Third party in the games industry refers to a different company from the parent company publishing or distributing the product. So for example I created The Getaway for PlayStation. This was a 1st party game. But in Japan it was published by Capcom, and so in Japan it's a 3rd party game.

A little late to the party. The Sega Genesis (MegaDrive) is my favorite game system of all time. Love the games, history behind it and the M1 was the first console I purchased with my own money. The Genesis 2 was my favorite design but it’s AV is far inferior to the M1. So I had the “Triple Bypass” mod preformed and use HD RetroVision component cables. Now the AV is vastly superior to my M1. IMO get whatever model appeals to you and have the Triple Bypass done. It’s that incredible .

Did Mike really just make a mistake when recounting the release dates of the Mega Drive? Or, and hear me out on this, did he just let slip that, on an alternate timeline, the Mega Drive was actually released in 1998? He secretly has access to an actual working Delorean, traveled back in time to the mid 80s and left a Mega Drive on the steps of Sega HQ so they could reverse engineer it, all so he would have the privilege of playing one in his youth? I don't know about you, but it's the only reasonable explanation I can come up with....

The Genesis is technically different and has a larger catalogue games. There are a large number of games that are region locked and won't work on your MD / Genesis. The Genesis is NTSC 60hz and the MD is either JNTSC, PAL 50hz, or PALB. These different standards also affect your ability to play games across the hardware revisions. There are ways around this though.

    I love the Mega Drive
some things I think need to be added here
the model 1 Mega Drive is only capable of stereo sounds if you use the headphone jack
connected to a tv it will just have mono sound
the model 2 Mega Drive can do native stereo sound on a stereo capable CRT
If you don't have a CRT you can also go for clone systems like the Mega Retron HD which does some fantastic work for a budget clone
the Retron 5 is also a viable option as it plays Mega Drive games absolutely brilliantly except games that use the 9V pin in the original Mega Drive this encludes Virtua Racing and Sonic & Knuckles(the lockon funtion. the game itself plays great)
due to differences between the PAL and NTSC video format (PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz) some PAL games run slower than they would in NTSC this includes games like Hellfire and Mega Man the Wily Wars
the Retron 5 autofixes this issue and makes games run at their intened framerate
my personal favorite clone is the japanese 16Bit MD Plus which is a Nomad like clone just a bit larger than the original gameboy advance
it doesn't have stereo sound or a second controller port and unfortunatly only plays japanese Mega Drive games and games without region lockout but I still find the system cool because of the good screen quality and formfactor
when it comes to games you NEED to play streets of rage 2 just the best beat em up of the 16bit era with a soundtrack from the gods(which is also available on almost every sega compilation for modern systems)
if you want a different expirience from the SNES library of games I recomand most of the shooters on the mega drive like empire of steel, hellfire and zero wing
if you want something more simular to the SNES you can only grab some of the action RPGs for the Mega Drive like Solei and Story of Thor
there is no shortage of amazing games for your Mega Drive
    GO GET EM!!!

You're a decade out on Japanese Mega Drive release date, you said 1998 when it was 1988!😃👍
I love little mistakes like this, it proves that you're human!👍
The console sold 32 million copies? Don't you mean units?
    I'm sorry I don't mean to nitpick🙏
Mega Drive Mark 1, the original & best!
I've got a Mark 1 & 2, but I've gone through about 4 mark 2's because the build quality is shocking compared to the mark 1. The Mark 2, cheap tacky plastic casing, flimsy red power & reset buttons that can easily get stuck, it's really easy to knacker the video out socket......it was just.....well, CRAP!
    When I've had the Mark 1, & the only Mark 1. I love it's design 😊👍
So there was such a thing of online gaming in the early 90,s, but very obscure?
8.36 - avoid this one! The sound chip In it is truly awful, along with mostly other "knock-offs" non originals

That's fine, it would not be a show without me messing something up.

The manuals are in the protective hard case. I mean you can’t get anymore protective than that. Waste of money

At least it's only my money I'm wasting then.

Urban Strike is way way better than Desert Strike.

Urban Strike was my least favourite. It was still great though.
