    Since I discovered Richard's channel a few weeks ago, it is rapidly becoming one of my favorite music related channels on ALL of RUclips.
    He's knowledgeable, articulate, funny, witty and even likably clumsy at times which makes him delightfully entertaining.
    He seems like someone I've known all my life...
    Especially love his presentation when speaking about acoustic guitars.
    Thanks Richard. You sir, are a gem...

    Hi Richard. Really nicely explained - keeping it simple to follow, while gently introducing a bit of theory in a way that won't scare anyone and send them running miles. I wish I'd had examples like this to follow when I was first learning, because I've always done things mostly by ear, finding interesting chords by trial and error. Your series of tutorials has helped me fill in the dots and get a much better understanding of what I've been doing instinctively all these years and why certain note combinations continue to attract me (or, in other words - realise that a "new" chord I've just discovered is as often as not an inversion something that's already an established part of my musical vocabulary ;) ). Turn that around - and the new knowledge allows me to experiment with greater confidence around chords which I already know. It might occasionally feel like I'm risking dislocating a finger in the process (the price of advancing years), but it's great to finally have a mental "map" starting to take shape in what's previously been a case of fumbling blindly in the dark.

    Ah Richard. What a fantastic video. Found your channel after being recommended an Eastman E2D. But this video….it took me three hours to watch while I explored these chords. I’m a lost at a year into learning guitar but this was the first time I started to understand how chords and scales come together, and all of a sudden I understand this amazing instrument so much better. Truly appreciate the sharing. Would love to come by the shop next time I’m back in the UK.

      Wow!!!! That’s just incredible! Wow what can I say? I spent a long time (too long maybe) racking my mind on what is the best way to approach a first chord type video and all I can say is what I came up with heart felt / sincere and I believe it should give someone an opportunity to make music in as easy way I could think of. Fingers crossed it has that impact ... as well as bringing new chord ideas to more experienced players too! Thank you so much once again. 🙏

    Just come across this video. Awesome stuff..This really is how simple it can be to make music. A chord or 3 and a little theory knowledge.
    The DM chord is also one of my favourites, there's so much in it without doing anything fancy..same applies to most of it really.
    If you think of a violin, 4 strings..but how much music is there in those 4 strings. Strings 5 and 6 do come in handy of course, but you don't NEED them a lot of the time. Unless you're banging out metal power chords all day..or blues shuffles for instance.
    And your scale sits there on the same 4 strings. Can't go wrong really can you?
    You will hear that D sus 4 a lot and the D9..which I know as D sus 2 as well.
    If you search for Johnny Flynn on you tube and his theme tune for the Detectorists TV programme, he uses it a lot in that and a lot of his other songs.
    And if you have not seen the Detectorists it's very good.

      Hia. Well not as such. The Patreon enables you to quizz me about content. Chat to me about something you are struggling with. I post comments additionally to the content on here. So I gave a link to an ear training website that was very useful and as I find anything of value I will post it. Its very new. So when this video went up I added the D chord images so you can print them off but I added two more which I didnt end up using in the video so 7 different D major chord shapes in total. You also get some benefits when using the shop too. Now the pandemic issues are "passing" and life will get much more normal for me I will be able to focus on it more too. For £5 a month I would sa its pretty cool having a guitar tutor on hand for advice when you need it.

At least I know I haven't been doing anything wrong for 37 years (so far) phew 😁. I always like to warm up just strumming different rhythms ,using the basic open chords , a habit from my teens which isn't regrettable lol 🤭 Changing the subject,sorry , please can you show us a Gordon Smith Graf sometime ? Known about the Sus4 and Add9 from listening to Don Everly, but the others are new. He probably used them but I didn't pick up on them. Great. The 7th you mention is obviously not D7 as that has a C, so bit confused with that.

    • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop  4 года назад

      Which bit are you referring to? Chord diagrams and chord names are supplied throughout so should be clear but let me know where you are lost and will tell you

    • @bobisaac1596
      @bobisaac1596 4 года назад

      This is around time 18.35 where you drop the D on B string to C# and refer to it as a Major 7th. This is what confused me with the chord D7 which uses C on the B string. So is it the NOTE Major 7th as opposed to the CHORD D7???

    • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop  4 года назад

      Bob Isaac ok I am on mobile so can’t check but just to clarify at no point did I refer to the chord as D7. That would indeed imply a minor 7 interval with a major 3rd also . By dropping down a semi tone the interval is a M7. Does that help?

    • @bobisaac1596
      @bobisaac1596 4 года назад

      Yes that clears it up. No you did not refer to the chord D7 at any time. I was professionally taught music in the '60's but after many years away from it have got very rusty. The Monarch Mars arrived yesterday, UPS were having problems. Today it has been in the stand acclimatising. Tomorrow it will get used. Stunning instrument, and an amazing case too. Thanks, greatly appreciated.

      I wish there was the opportunity of free lessons like this when I was a beginner in my teens. I made very slow progress on my own . Sometimes I delve into other channels lessons to recap & improve or try to learn something new and I get lost very quickly. Stick with what Richard is teaching in these lessons , don't be afraid to experiment a little too and you'll be making music . Have fun 👍

      It’s all a very personal journey so I don’t want to just do a range for the sale of it. Therefore as and when I find pedals that wow me I will hopefully get them made under my SMJ name ( saving butterflies 🦋. I just made a payment of £500 to butterfly conservation thanks to people buying my SMJ products!!!) It’s early days on this project but already have found 2 amazing overdrives that I used in the video, a delay and chorus all which I should be able to retail at around £35 !!

I want to update you guys every day on what is going on - so many immensly exciting developments - I am even thinking of coming over tonight to the studio to do a video. I get lost to what to tell you first! ONE massive development is the introduction of a new member of the team and that has taken so much of my time in terms of interviews etc and now he has been with us a couple of weeks he has settled in beautifully - I am also developing an entirely new Pedal brand which is launching NOW ish!!!!!! THIS is what I need to do the video on........ Then huge news in the world of Furch, Dowina & FGN - Too much going on...... and of course more lessons.. Everything I am working on now is theoretically paving the way to me being able to do the videos much more consistently again. Fingers crossed!
