  • The Guitar Looper. DON'T BE AFRAID.
Watch this video and you will hopefully realise just how important this ONE piece of advice is. I demonstrate a couple of examples of how you can improve as a guitarist and trust me - I wish I had done this 30 years ago.
For more details on Jam Pal (a simple, affordable & easy to use Guitar Looper pedal) click here rguitars.co.uk...
I will never forget Shaun Baxters advice. I was travelling a 3 hour round trip every week for guitar lessons!!! He would say to me "Have you found someone to jam with? If you want to improvise you have to be jamming". He knew how important this was for me. I know how important it is for you too.
The wonderful thing is these days, thanks to technology - many of the benefits of playing guitar in a band or with friends can now be recreated so incredibly simply in one pedal.
If only I had a Jam Pal 30 years ago. I would have been a very different player had I done so. A much more complete player.
Don't make my mistake. Start using one today (or find some patient friends!)
THANK YOU SO MUCH to Oliver Salmon who is doing a Level 2 Media Studies course at Stratford Upon Avon College for his support editing the video and showing me some of the basics that would have stopped me doing this myself. You could say I am now a more complete RUclipsr too!!!! THANK YOU OLIVER!

Suddenly the sound of that guitar is ten times better than your earlier demo Richard because you are feeling it ! A perfect example of the difference between just playing notes and real playing. More please !

I've been playing guitar for over 50 years now, and I only started using a looper pedal last year. Richard is right: if you play or practice alone, a looper pedal will accelerate your progress in countless ways.

I’ve been following you for some time, Richard and want to tell you that I began to watch this video for a very specific reason not related to the use of loopers. I’m in the process of developing a RUclips channel and, because so many channels now are super-high-tech, I remembered that you’d started out in a very straightforward homely fashion, sitting down in front of (probably) an iPhone on a tripod. I wanted to look at this aspect of what you do in a more recent video. I was well rewarded. First, your camera style suits your personality perfectly. That is the main thing, I think, because it just feels genuine. Second, I agree with a couple of other commentators that you demonstrate the advantages of a looper beautifully. Thank you! Finally, that’s a lovely guitar you’re using. I can’t see the headstock but it must be a PRS or a PRS-alike. Can you tell us more about it? But thank you again for keeping true to yourself and for a very humble and helpful video. Rock steady.

I should have watched this video decades ago!!!! It would have surely transformed my ability instead of staying as beginner forever. That is what I need jamming along with my self before I build enough confidence jamming with anybody else. Thanks Richard. I am going to place an order today and use it. God, when you play without a loop and with the loop is the comparison between heaven and earth. It is so emotionally beautiful. Cheers from Indonesia.

Brilliant Video. Thank you so much Richard. I have thought about getting a looper before but all the previous videos i watched involved the demonstrators laying down several, complex rhythms and i'm not sure i can do that yet so i thought i wasn't good enough for a looper yet. this, however was brilliant. You can loop with just one chord and it sounds ace??!!! That is an epiphany for me. And what you did with the Am and F chords - gorgeous. Right I'm getting one. Only thing now is - which one????? Thanks so much. More simple looping videos would be fab. 😃😃🤗🤗

In the early 70’s it wasn’t a looper it was two portable cassette tape machines with loads of hiss and poor quality audio which I used to multitrack and jam on my own on the very cheap.
Then I joined a band and played and jammed “live” with friends for many years.
I’m still not technically as good as Richard from Richards guitars - but I can definitely improvise when the unforeseen happens (which hopefully you dont get with a looper).
Just some thoughts - but thanks Richard. Your videos really make me smile - because you definitely love what you do.
    Keep it up.

    • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop  4 года назад

Thats what I used to use but the issue with backing tracks is there is no way to focus on each chord individually. This really hampers development and study of the improvisation over each chord. A looper enables you to really establish every lick / phrase / connection necessary throughout the piece. Thats why I personally love it ayway.

Richard, outstanding pedal & advice... I think we walked much the same path. Those times, when you look back... wondering, despite all the best efforts: "what could I have changed?". Agree 100%, with the retrospective hindsight and lack of jam partner difficulties. About the only bittersweet consolation, is knowing they didn't exist until relatively recently. Looper Blues anyone?

There are many teachers on RUclips, but you seem to have (had) similar struggles and you think in a similar way to me, so you lessons really "resonate", thanks! I also think you are too humble about your playing, there are many pompous guitar RUclipsrs that have far more subs than you, but far less musical feel and far less interesting insights ;)

After a classic bit of' Richardian Intro Chat' the actual demo and explanation of how to start using a looper is one of the best I've seen.
Most demos go for more complex patterns straight away but the demonstration of using just one chord and then two and finally three un-named chords for the 12 bar blues, is very clear and really shows one way to develop both intuitive playing and 'feel' ..... AND Richard avoids all the usual bullshit showing-off of playing superfast.
This demo is very useful for bluesy-style. It would be interesting to see a similar approach using the one chord then two chord approach for a simple jazz style.
Nice one Richard. 10/10 (By the way .... Great guitar tone)

Audio only in right ear for some reason?
And agree a looper is a great tool, playing in time is something many struggle with unknowingly, at which point it's quite late.
Also you learn that less is more as you start building loops. Very important for lead.
Nothing worse than jamming with someone who just bleed out continuous riffs with no let up as you're competing for space as opposed to combining as a unit.

  • @dat219

The first thing I do when I talk to someone about playing or someone asks me if I teach lessons etc I 1st ask them, do you have a looper? If they don't and many don't I explain the benefits in practicing with one & suggest to get one and to learn to use it . There is a small timing & learning curve So purchase a simple one. I perform out & I use a DigiTech JamMan Stereo Delay ( no longer in production , I have talked & emailed them twice to bring them back with some recommendations as a performing musician ) It is a valuable asset and piece of equipment to what I do. I play mostly acoustic electric & a lot of times I lay down tracks live or pre-recorded at home sometimes adding a bass guitar tracks .I will play either lap steel over the looper's track or harmonica or lead guitar.
It is like having a second musician and also using a looper to practice You learn the extreme lesson of what NIT to play.

Michael! I agree with every word which is EXACTLY why I asked for this very specific simple feature set on my own design. I wanted to reach people who want to focus on musicality - not learning how the pedal works! I was selling a unit by Xvive which had a chorus section and god knows what - but it drove me NUTS! Fine for hard core pedal users (and frankly it probably wasnt hard core - but enough to confuse me!!) so I requested a very simple design so that even I can use it comfortably!

Yep, all of the elements, techniques and features people learn are of no value until you form the ability to make music, and this is gained by listening to someone else, then choosing your contributions, following the chords and responding to the vocal (if present); emotion is the key.

I agree and I did mention playing with others is so important. Personally I always struggled to play in front of other people - always very self consious. Also finding the time etc to play with other people. In my case originally I had nobody to play with. So many many good reasons why the pedal can support a player in those times. The key is you need to be playing with someone or something at all times! Thanks again for your feedback

I’ve been playing guitar (mostly acoustic, finger style and percussive) for a long time and had kind of plateaued. I’ve not played in a band since college so don’t have the opportunity to jam much with others. I also bought a cheap Squier and a Katana mini amp last year because I wanted to make some more noise but it’s sat largely unused and unloved because I was just playing the same riffs I played on my acoustics. I watched this video, bought a jam pal and within a couple of sessions with the setup I’m playing expansive blues solos over a 12 bar chord progression (travelling wilburys ‘cool dry place’ in case you’re interested). It’s literally revolutionised my playing and I find myself playing in every spare minute! I was late for work this week because I was playing before I left for work. It’s made learning exciting again. Great advice, great little product.

    • @RichardsGuitarshop
      @RichardsGuitarshop  4 года назад +2

David Aslett hi. A pause can mean you are pressing the button before you start. The recording must start literally on the first note and the button must be pressed again literally as you would be starting that first note again in the next loop. It requires some practice but it will improve your timing no end! Good luck
