I remember, as a child growing up in London, England, my father took the family to Norfolk Broads where we met a man who had a Punt Gun. It was larger than the one used in this video. He told us that it had to be well hidden during period of time due to it being an ill-legal weapon. When it was to be used, it took a long time to load, always before starting the hunt, as there were no shells made at that time and he used any small pieces of scrap, or other stuff, such as ball bearings to load into it. It could only be used once during a hunt, usually either at dusk or dawn, and could kill up to 300 birds at a time depending on the size of the raft he shot at. I visited him many times while in the Royal Navy, but sad to say he died and I cannot recall his name or what happened to his weapon. Apparently, it had been in his family from the time it was manufactured, a long time ago, and was still in good working order, as I saw more than once. It could never be used from the shoulder as it was too big and the recoil extremely powerful so that it would probably have dislocated, or broken, a shoulder, at least.

Recoil of 12 ga slug that normaly weight 28-32 grams is less than normal 36 gram birdshot. Why do people belive in shotgun myth that when you fire slug or buckshot from shotgun, recoil is bigger than hunting birdshot? You shoot same amount of lead in birdshot, even bigger. 12/89 birdshot loads have the biggest recoil in 12 ga shotguns world.

But he's correct; I've run a few hundred pounds of shot and slugs through my 12 gauge shotguns. The ones delivering the most muzzle energy (which will consider the mass of the projectile and the speed) are the ones that kick the hardest; two-ounce turkey loads are pretty stout, but I can shoot them all day if needed. Deer slugs aren't as hard-hitting. A pump or break-action kicks harder, in the same way that a bolt-action rifle kicks harder, than a semi-auto. None are unmanageable, even for a 120 lb. woman, with proper technique. My Raging Bull in .454 Casull is much the more vicious firearm; it's nearly too brutal to shoot more than a cylinder full at a time.

And when landing in the woods at dusk were breaking branches off trees as so many would alight. They were scooping them out of the air with nets. You didn’t even have to shoot them. They needed to show the function of the movable folding thole pin on the gun. The boat had a hole in the bow and appeared to be reinforced. He described a "mechanism" that it fitted in to. The thole allowed for elevation adjustment and just a little leeway for drift ( not much, though a broach from the recoil could be enough to overturn the boat.) Also, market hunters would use gravel, old nails and metal scrap to more broadly scatter the load and kill more ducks and geese.
