One thing no one's talking about with the global shutter is how great it is for anyone shooting for VFX. Camera tracking and 3D solves are a pain in the ass with rolling shutter.
Are u saying this camera is great for vfx? I’ve been going through RUclips for some hours now I’m looking for a great camera that’s crazy priced. That’s why the Sony fx3 that they used to film the creator got my eyes. If there’s any video out there you know of which takes a look through the next cameras for filmmaking that works well for adding vfx and those stuff too, thanks ❤
If the dynamic range and low light performance can match up with say the FX3/A7SIII, Alpha 1 etc etc then this will easily be the best video camera Sony has made to date! Not getting one for the time being but super freaking stoked for the future line up of Sony cameras!!!
Oh man. This truly broke the glass ceiling off modern digital photography. I'm not lining up for it but can't wait for the tech to trickle through the industry.
Global shutter is too expensive for the majority of photographers. Maybe in a 5 years it’ll be affordable. Stacked sensors are still expensive and they’ve been around for 5 years. 😢
@Broskisnowski they don't, but it removes the jello, stretch and squeeze. You can always rig and weight a camera to make it more stable - but only a global shutter removes the jello effects.
@@CamillaI We will see... It's all speculations and rumours. We will see. But some compromise had to be made, for sure. It's not, however, direct competitor for A1. Both cameras have their own uses.
@@MiKaplar But it's extended ISO range. Most likely there will be more noise than on ISO 250, like on other cameras where ISO 50 is noisier than ISO 100.
Sony probably didn't mention the dynamic range because it's not better than any of their current lineup, which is totally fine because it's already great.
@@Davitor1Being that this is a stills camera for event and sport, I don’t think it needs the best dynamic range. No rolling shutter, shooting speed, and high ISO performance are more important than dynamic range. People interested in the best image quality for landscape and portrait work would be shooting on A7R V instead.
@@Davitor1 no it’s to get the thing that fits your needs best. Just like R3 and R5 are good at different things, it’s fine if A9 and A7R are specialized at different things. I’m not loyal to Sony.
I don't understand; you keep saying that a global shutter is how film cameras works. Correct me if I'm wrong, but film cameras actually do have a physical shutter that is rotating to block the light from hitting the film as it is descending. We were discussing rolling shutter issues back then because of the physical rolling shutter that exposed the film from top to bottom or left to right, for example. So, for me, a global shutter is pretty much a digital camera thing, and I believe it's revolutionary as it addresses the long-standing issue of the so-called "rolling shutter". Anyway, great video! I love the way it's done! Do you think we will see more cinema cameras with a global shutter in the future ?
Global shutter is better than film in its shutter and the perfect way to do this, but in most applications there is no problem with other methods. Ccd was global shutter with some overexposure ans mutlitap reading artifacts. The problem with global shutter is that there is a loss of more than 1 stop in dynamic range. It becomes important in some scenes. You can be sure the dynamic range of this camera is poor compared to a canon c70, about 3 stops inferior, but it will mostly be used in sports, and most people are not aware of the massive advantage a canon c70 or a new alexa has compared to all other cameras so there is no problem. Photographers do not need much dynamic range, a typical lut only offer 3.5 stops over mid value of exposure.
You're correct. Film cameras had either focal plane shutters or leaf shutters. The focal plane shutters had either vertical or horizontal travel, and they didn't expose the entire image at the same time like the global shutter does.
I would really like to see what the process looks like from start to finish, how you process material that looks like this, especially the one on the outside. What camera settings, what lens, what lut, what corrections, everything to achieve such an image. Merci!
I have zero excitement watching the announcement and zero excitement watching other video But somehow this video from you makes me curious about the camera.. great video Matti!
I own it… you are right, this is the probably the best video hybrid available as of now. Love the colors… comparing this to my Reds to understand the differences.
Two things about global shutter: 1. The camera isn't "reading" the sensor all at once. The readout is still sequential. The difference is that with a global shutter, the exposure starts for all pixels at the same time and ends for all pixels at the same time. After the exposure, the collected charge is transferred to a light insensitive part of the photosite where the charge awaits being converted to digital. 2. Film actually doesn't work that same way. Film doesn't have a shutter at all, it relies on a mechanical shutter. It can be either a focal plane shutter or a leaf shutter, but a mechanical shutter is always necessary with film. Focal plane shutter curtains can go fast or slowish, and will exhibit a rolling shutter effect to a degree - just like a mechanical shutter will on digital cameras. A leaf shutter has other issues, but doesn't have any rolling shutter. Hasselblad medium format camera lenses use leaf shutters and you can test that yourself.
This would be interesting to try on a LED stage where global shutter is a pro, and you might manage to do video shoots without genlock even. The a9III could also open up still photography in led volumes, as it is quite limited atm with other stills cameras that dont have GS, or genlock for that matter.
All these youtubers surely seem to care a lot about minimal rolling shutter effects all of a sudden… for their heavily compressed social media content with grain added on top. Not a negative word on that when we saw all the reviews for the FX3 and A7SIII, just hype, as always.
Film cameras do not work like global shutters. There is the mechanical shutter that has to open and then close or there is a spinning shutter that takes time to "roll" across the frame. Global shutter is one of the true aspects of digital being better than film. however, you'll just need to add another 48megapixels or so. I'm not sure what film maxed out resolution is, I know its significantly higher still than regular digital cameras, photo stacking is super cool though so another digital win.
I never realized how a lot of photographers out there will never buy a camera out there like this because of the price. I have a day job that I have been blessed with to allow me to fund my hobbies, my dream is to become a full time photographer. I have a great collections of lenses, different flashes and studio equipment to go with my a7RV, I am 100% getting the a9iii because although the a7RV takes amazing quality photos, its way too slow for sports photography from my experience. I was debating if I should sell my a7RV and just use the a9iii or just keep them both.
Ok so I have a question or something to clarify. He said that film has the same capability as this camera. On a film camera we have the same problem in my opinion. The shutter moves up to let the light go through but if you slow it down we have the same line of light that starts at the bottom. If I'm correct, this new sony camera is the first to have this capability. Plz correct me if I'm wrong.
We have had global shutter in broadcast for ages, so it's nothing new in that sense. But I guess the technique is harder the larger the sensor gets. We have also had built in NDs since the time of the vikings or so...

The A9III is revolutionary and all the other companies are going to do global shutter. Sony is really pushing the tech. Also, no flash sync speed which for photographers is insane! ISO 250 is the base ISO so not too bad.
I am returning mine after 5 days of use ! this camera is definitely not for flash photography/ studio ! first of all shutter speed goes at max at 16000 shutter speed at multiple mode shoot only. 80000 shutter speed is only in single mode shoot! color shits are all along those variable speeds you need to sync flash manually in order to shoot with variable shutter speed, and it's time consuming, and i suspect that its still not accurate and it might be the reason for power color shits strength light intensity inaccuracy .Another issue is the noise and Aperture change at values like f8 noise is so big and noticeable that it makes picture not usable bottom line its a real downer on photography side but videography is definitely a big high
The only downside I think you missed was low megapixel. While its not a downside for everyone as an A7RV shooter I just can't imagine going below 50mp anymore. The ability to crop massively and still have a decent mp imagine is so useful for wildlife even having a 600mm lens. Hopefully the A1 II will have a global shutter fingers crossed.
