    I got holy pandas from drop earlier this month. They are coming in a few days. I was wondering if you would recommend lubing them. It looks really tedious, just wondering if it is worth it. And since I am kind of new to mechanical keyboards in general is it bad to use switches like holy pandas entirely unlubed, or is that not the case?

    • @takoyakeys
      @takoyakeys  3 года назад

      You don’t have to lube them, but they are 100% worth lubing and much better lubed (in sound and feel). The one good thing is that once you lube the switches they are basically good forever!

      @ParthPatel-om4on 3 года назад

      @@takoyakeys how expensive is it to get the materials to lube it, and how long did it take you?

    • @takoyakeys
      @takoyakeys  3 года назад +1

      You would need a brush, lube (can get for cheap from Aliexpress but wait is a bit long), an aluminum switch opener is better but you can open switches with a flathead screwdriver also - if you have none of those things I would say... 60 USD with an aluminum switch opener... maybe 25 USD without it.
      As for time... depends on how many switches you have to lube. For about 90 it took me 5 hours or so (but will get better with practice). If you don’t use a switch opener it will probably add 30-45 mins.

    I've read alot of stuff saying that filming the pandas either won't let them close the housing, do you know offhand if that was an issue with the first drop or just a non-issue at all? I wanted to film mine but those stories kinda scared me away from it.

    • @takoyakeys
      @takoyakeys  3 года назад

      Hey! It depends on the film. Some of the thicker film won’t allow the housing to close but the one I used from Deskeys compresses so it worked fine (v2 pandas). I don’t know what you mean by first drop but if it’s v1 you’re referring to then I don’t know the difference unfortunately.

    Sorry for my lack of knowledge in mechanical keyboards, but I just bought the holy pandas and lubed them, but each switch has their own sound and the whole keyboard sounds inconsistent. any tips?

    • @takoyakeys
      @takoyakeys  3 года назад +1

      Hmm... the first thing I would think of is lubing inconsistencies - using too much lube on one switch, not enough on another.
      What parts of the switch did you lube (top housing, bottom housing, stem, springs)? How did you lube the springs, did you bag lube? Did the stems have factory lube on it? And did you lube the stem legs?
      Generally speaking if you hear a scratchy sound it could indicate not enough lube, and if it sounds and feels mushy you likely over lubed. If you hear a pinging sound there likely wasn’t enough lube used for the springs.
      If you hear a non-pinging metallic sound that’s the metal leaf on the bottom housing. If you really hate that sound you can lube that part and/or the stem legs, but note that tactility will be sacrificed to an extent.

  • @aeidein
    @aeidein 3 года назад +2

    Any regrets lubing the legs? By about what percentage would you say it reduces the tactility and actuation force?

    • @takoyakeys
      @takoyakeys  3 года назад +3

      Zero regrets lubing the legs - the bump became a smoother and the leaf crunching sound was also reduced.
      I would say the tactility was reduced by about... 10-15%? Which might seem like a lot but I had to take out a stock vs lubed one and press it several dozen times to come to that conclusion.
