Yes I agree, it's the smell of sulphur, a powder designed for short cartridges or shotgun with lower pressures & really has that old world smell about it, the new powders don't have that aroma, the old cordite has, you won't be the first to comment, I remember as a young adult in military service coming home to visit family & my grandmother (she'd lost 6 husbands due to war), 1890's onwards, she lived past a hundred, commenting on how I reminded her of her younger days, I was using Imperial leather soap, old spice, czar & deep woods after shave, that I presume have all been discontinued, wreaking with witb fine machinery oils with cleaning rifles & all tools with the same oils & maintaining leather with beeswax rubs, these days as someone who's getting a little more in years what brings back those memories is EEZOX Premium gun care, has the same smell of leather & old world charm with premium care & my grandmothers memories

Also a note for defense-minded gun owners: The overwhelming majority of defensive gun uses end with ZERO SHOTS FIRED... “Stopping power” begins with having the gun with you and knowing when/how to deploy it defensively.
It's not that I don't believe you, but how do you know this to be true?
Stopping POWER and gun presence and knowing how to properly use/deploy it are 2 complete different things. He even said in the video. 6 rds. With a .38 in a doped up soldier is not doing it. Stopping power is dropping you like a sack of potatoes, like there's no more fight or flight in you and not need to restrain afterwards. Hence the word STOPPING POWER, not prevent.
And if I was a deranged person that wanted to do a mass shooting, people with open carry would be the 1st people I'd go for to inflict as much damage as possible before I get killed. Concealed and training is best but we are talking about "Stopping power." Zero shots is not gun defense, thats just defense.

When I was a kid, .22 lr, was all we could afford to buy. And yes we are a lot of mule deer, in western mountains. Shot placement critical.
My old man was a stickler for not causing unnecessary suffering, so close range and shot placement paramount

Nice discussion by gents who know what they’re talking about. Although I did miss 7.62x39 and 30-30, both with excellent ballistics within their class.
Those are the go to calibers by most to i have them both and would never be with out one or the other.

.30-30 and 7.62 by 39 have almost identical ballistics. I do not.think tht is coincidental. Neither cartridge was specifically designed for killing deer. Just saying . . .

It's nice when you can afford to have your own place with land. Cities and urban areas have become hells.
There are some deer who live in my shooting range. They absolutely ignore the shooting on the thousand yard range.

The 6.5 doesn't have any advantages over the 308 untill 400 and 500 yards . Where I hunt 98 % of shots are 200 yards and under. So I'll continue to spend 3x less on my 308 shells to achieve the same results.
In sweden, the 6.5x55 is the cheapest of the "full power" rounds. 308 has gained popularity. But the PRS shooters are getting it back and with the 6.5 Creedmoor availability of good bullets are on the rise and thats nice. I have a 308 but its only for moose hunting.
In modern 6.5x55 rifles the x55 is superiour to the creedmoor, more case capacity lets it go faster.

@Nicholas Rodriguez all rifles i see are the same 20 or 22", but then I'm mainly looking at sauer, tikka, howa etc. Custom rigs are longer but a hunter don't want to heavy riggs.
The 308 is more powerful and for european hunters ranges are almost never over 100 meters. It's considered unethical to even take a shot at a moose at 150+ meters. But then we live in heavy forrester land where encounters are sub 80 meter and we mainly hunt with dogs.
Nothing with that.. Where i grew up you either got medium shots or very long.. Eastern Ore. Use what makes sense for where you are..
I personally dont believe all these stupid ballistic stats matter. .308 vs 6.5. 5.56 vs 5.45. Etc. All bullets kill. Use whatever you want and whatever you like. I personally am a .30-06 and 5.56 guy for rifles and for handguns, I prefer .45 and .22LR. Why? I'm used to them, I like em, and that's all that matters to me
I've stepped back from 6.5 Grendel to 308 due to unavailability of ammo. I have hundreds of 308 Nosler 168 match and thousands of 150 soft points. Hell, I can't see past 500 yards anyway
I'm still running my Grendel, but I don't shoot volumes out of it, and I handled for it. Farthest hit so far was a prairie dog at 600 yds 😀
Where I hunt you will almost never see a buck 100 yards away. More like 50.

@@alancranford3398 what’s funny is what he said is basically scaled up heavy weight projectile slow velocity and guess what it achieves knockdown power. My brother got hit in the front plate with a 7.62 from fairly close range in Afghanistan when cop Margah got raided in 2010. He said it knocked him down and broke a rib. I doubt a 22lr or a .17 caliber pellet gun would do that. I doubt any pistol caliber would do that with a plate based on what I’ve seen happen to cops wearing soft armor. Same transfer of energy happens when bones are struck vs soft tissue where you still get more hydrostatic shock, which is important if you’re trying to drop something 😊

I know for a fact my grandpa has taken a deer with a 22. And you couldn't guess how many thousands of rabbits and squirrels and just about anything else you can eat. In the case of the deer it was a pretty rare encounter pretty close. He was born in 1934 and grew up on a farm in Kansas. He regularly hunted for dinner on his way home from school as a kid. Freaking mind blowing nowadays 👍
I grew up on my grandfather's farm he was born in 1938, he brought home everything with a .22 deer, turkeys, squirrels, pigs, racoons, etc... Pretty much anything they could eat. And I personally have dispatched cows that we butchered with a .22lr. With the right shot placement a .22 LR will kill any animal on the north american continent. My other grandfather on my dad's side liked to shoot does in the head with a .22short. and was very successful.
I have put MANY eastern whitetails in the freezer with a .22lr pump gun. Back in the late 80's and early 90's CCI Stingers was the holy grail for me. I was after meat, not antlers so a fat 'ol doe would get a 32 grain hyper velocity slug to the head and... voila'.... venison for the cook stove. I've put quite a few down around the 100 yard range with that round too.
And NO, I didn't then and STILL don't give a singular DAMN about people complaining about it being 'unethical' nor do I give a damn about 'da law' saying it is illegal to use such a round. My and my family's grumbling stomach trumps any worthless laws in that regard. And if situations are such that I find myself in similar circumstances... I'll do the same exact thing all over again!

It just takes a head shot with a .22 my dude. Deer are only hard to kill for idiot Fudds who never shoot. Those same Fudds and their lack of skill is the only reason heart-lung shots are considered the standad, and why people think you need a .30-06 to kill a deer at 80 yards.
Get good, make head or neck shots. Use a more reasonable caliber.
If rimfires weren't illegal for deer in Texas, I'd use it in a heartbeat. As it is, I use a .223, which braindead Fudds think is not enough for whitetail, and is e an illegal for being "too small" in some states. Never failed to one shot a deer, and never had them not fall where they stand.
@@mollymcghee2220 many people have taken a deer with a .22. In older days it was quite a commonplace for everyone to own a .22 because it was cheap to shoot and could put food on the table. Every firearm has the potential to be lethal but shot placement is key

The guy who went to Alaska in “Into the Wild” killed a moose with a .22 rifle, obviously multiple shots. But he was an amateur and the moose rotted before he could clean and eat it, and he died eating poisonous plants.

38 special is roughly equivalent to 9mm. It's an effective cartridge, especially out of a decent size barrel.

@@Colt-tf6xf 38 smith and wesson/38/200(british designation) only really got effective when you paired them with 200 gr LRN bullets which had a tendency to act like dumbdumb or hollow points in terms of expansion. That being said none of the 38 Smith and wesson loadings got above 1000 fps in my findings.

As a newer gun owner soaking up as much as I can over the last 7 years, I enjoy these types of videos.
This video is super focused on the math & accuracy dynamics of calibers, but find what you can on gel ballistics. I’m kind of disappointed they didn’t discuss 300 BLK, because it’s a big bullet but has the same casing as a 556. It’s a little slower, but it is bigger so its speed at
7 years is not new.

@@vossman5 A lot of gun experts don't believe that, but I have bagged many rabbits without hitting them. You shoot between their ears and the shock wave takes them out (22 long rifle).

Re: 22lr,, I worked ER when in college in Knoxville, tn.. for 3 yrs!! the only dead GSW's were from 22lr. (I was involved in a culling operation once over 20yrs ago,, 22 mag "culled" close to 30 deer in 2 weeks, with only 1 lost animal!)
the 30-30 is an underrated round imo. the energy and wound cavity that it produces are very impressive.
That’s why it’s been around so long and even to this day is one of the go-to’s for deer for people, who are still shooting with the same gun their great great grandfather was using 100 years ago to take deer. Not to mention it’s relatively cheap and sometimes still left on the shelf after the covidiots come to swipe the ammo shelves clean.

When we were allowed to own weapons in the UK my favorite personal rifle was a Ruger No#2 45/70 for Deer I used a BSA .270.
My hand gun of choice on a 25 meter range was a Beretta 92f compact short 9mm, but for fun I liked the Webley 455 revolver.

The 6,5x55 was adopted in 1893, the Swedes went with the Mauser 94 and later 96 and the Norweigans with the Krag. I love that round and it's cheap to around here.
260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55 Swede are all very closely matched in performance in factory loads, the real difference gets to be in the handloading, and extreme long range stuff. Moving up, go with a 6.5 PRC for heavier game using tougher bullets. Stepping up more, the barrel life is going to fall off quick (as with any over-bore in a given caliber).

Stopping power is a misleading term because of all the variables in play. You hit the nail on the head regarding shot placement and is all important. That being said pistol calibers vs rifle vs shotgun are altogether different animals. The hydrostatic tissue damage of super sonic rounds far out perform pistol rounds all things equal.
Stopping power: sometimes nuking it from orbit is the only way to be sure.

Ultimately, it comes down to your personal shooting style. I carry a 9mm, but i believe in shot placement and i'm accurate enough to have confidence in that. If you're not a very good shot, then logically the bigger a hole you can put in something the less important shot placement becomes. Obviously you still have to be able to hit the target, but yeah a .44 magnum will blow a bigger hole in something than a 9mm.
My opinion on this is .45 ACP is a better bullet, but I'd rather have 17-19 rounds of 9mm, rather than 8-9 rounds of .45
But you are spot on. It just depends on your style and situation.
If you're not a very good shot, you need training, not a bigger bullet.

They did used .38 pretty well against the northern and middle part of the Philippines but when they reached the south they needed to waste full load just to take down one Juramentado. Those Berserkers are the main reason for the concept of "stopping power" and the usage of the .45
In WWII one of my relatives used the ultimate in stopping power calibers and I was disappointed that you didn't cover it. It made the 30-06 as fired from a Garand seem like a pipsqueak by comparison. I'm looking forward to you covering his caliber, the 16" battleship shell...

A co-worker's hubby proved that a .22 will stop you if you hold it to your head. He could have simply read the FBI report instead. Placement is more important than size, although his placement was excellent!

As someone that survived three deadly encounters during my career I agree that “stopping power” is a myth. In one instance an armed robbery suspect continued fighting even after I put four center mass shots into him w/my issued thirty-eight revolver.

Thw BMG is ALMOST exactly a scaled up 1.5X version of the 30.06. The exception being the base diameter. It's about 1.65X the base diameter if the 06 because JM Browning (in his wisdom) chose for a more tapered case because he knew this would be almost exclusively used in heavy machine guns. Just a little insight into the mind of a genius right there!

The joy and sadness I experienced when Ruger purchased Marlin was hard to stomach. Ruger will make wonderful lever action rifles but it tells the fate of the Deerfield/44 Carbine.

Great video guys. For stopping power, if I could only have one gun, it would be the semi auto 12 gauge with 00. In a hand gun I would go for the .357 Sig with 125 GR. HP. The rifle is a tough choice, but if I could only have one and food was a priority, I would choose the .444 Marlin. Inside 150 yards it will take any North American game, from deer to brown bear. For long range at 500+ yards, I really like the .338 Lapua. Thank you again for the great video!
Those are good choices. But if I was carrying the 357 mag for hunting used it would be Ruger redhawk. With 158 gr hp or bear country. Hard cast. In town used. The. Combination you are talking about with the sig is great and nothing does what a good. Shotgun does. With 00 or slugs. And myself I never tryed the 444 Marlin lever action. I my own. Thinking. It would proforma. Inside 150 a little less than. 45-70 lever gun
Be smart with the rifle choose a common caliber I’d say .308 is a master of none but can get the job done for most situations it’s effective out to 1km (1000 meters) and at that range it’s still got the kinetic energy to kill / put shit down on the ground
It's been years but, I remember reading a book years ago talking about what was the best cal for deer... the Author said that a .22 would kill deer but, and also you could use a 30--30 for elk , Moose, and caribou...but, he said it was not ethical basically he said shot placement was the critical point. .22 behind the ear on the deer and same for the 30--30 on the larger animals....

I put down a fully grown (and very large for ita kind @ ~1200lbs) male Brumby (aka a Wild horse) in NE Australia with a 22LR out of a lever rifle... 22LR can kill quite effectively if you know how to shoot and hit your target.
I previously owned some of those on your list, my favorite was the RUGER PCC model 19100, very fun and accurate pistol and it was actually created for the police. Very sturdy, very well made.

@@420haxx 50-110 couldn't handle smokeless cartridges back then and now we have rifles that can handle it. Im sure with today's manufacturing and material quality it could be achievable.

The way I view "stopping power" is that the highest velocity and most expansion you get enough penetration to comfortably hit the vitals, and get most of your expansion in the vitals not past them, is ideal. For example I've never had a deer take a step with a 100 grain from a 257 weatherby. I've never had one not run from a 45-70. Muzzle energy is a great metric for comparing cartridges within the same "classes" that I'm kind of making up here. Low velocity like normal handguns up to big slow stuff like 45-70 up to around 2000fps. Mid velocity like older rifle cartridges with shoulders like a 30-30 for example but in general up to about 2700fps. And high velocity cartridges above that it's a big category you have what are now standard rifle cartridges like 308 and 5.56 up to hotter stuff like the weatherby magnums or modern long range cartridges. Energy is great for comparing within these classes but basically useless comparing across classes. For example muzzle energy of a 257 weatherby with a 100 grain bullet is about 2850 ft/lbs, and an original 45-70 black powder load with a 405 grain at roughly 1200fps is only about 1295 ft/lbs. I absolutely would not shoot a bison with a 257 weatherby and wouldn't hesitate to shoot one with a black powder 45-70 load.

I agree the 3"1/2 12ga. Replaced the 10ga. For two reasons 1) You don't need to buy another gun.(well maybe if your married, and not into guns).
2) having one gun to do it all is the tops...
its kind of like the 20 ga. 3" killed the 16 ga. Unless you own a Browning Sweet 16 Auto 5.

On the farm, steers are routinely dispatched with a 22 LR rifle. Behind the ear, angled forward. Hundreds dropped instantly. Shot placement.

I think Hornady has really reached the pinnacle of 9mm performance with their Critical Duty +P 135g flexlock. It’s amazing the energy it delivers to targets, and it expands really well, while also having some decent barrier penetration. If you’ve got a full-size handgun in 9mm capable of +P, I don’t think there’s a better option. I’d love to see hornady come up with a similar 150g projectile for PCCs
Hornady Critical Duty/Critical Defense or Federal HST (non +P) live in my daily carry .380 & 9mm subcompact guns. Federal HST +P live in my 'home defense' and 'winter carry/dangerous environment' full-size guns.

22 mag vs 22 long is a lots of power in the mag compared to the long.
In a 6" barrel, it's a little past double the energy of the 22LR.
308 may be old and a bit wonky, but I still love it. It's a fun caliber to use as those 1000 meter shots are a bit more challenging, not a lot of recoil either.

A neighbor of my unfortunately got shot through the spine with a 22. He didn't make it unfortunately. Its all about shot placement at those close ranges.
Ive heard this alot with gangbabnger lore and they say that they prefer 22 380 etc because it bounces around inside.

Great video. I love the fact that both Barret and S&W developed “smaller” caliber versions of the .50 caliber firearms as a middle finger to California that in many ways turned out to actually be better than the original.

Expansion doesn't really do much in the way of stopping someone. It's more so it won't over penetrate. CNS hits are the only hits worth getting, and they're actually much more likely to happen with FMJ since they'll punch a hole right through someone and are more likely to go through the spinal column.
I laugh everytime I hear RUclips firearms "experts" talk about .308 vs. 6.5 Creedmoor. Like the only shooting anyone does is at 800 to 1000 yards.

Nothing they said was wrong though. They didn't say the .308 was a bad round, just that the 6.5 Creedmoor outclassed it.
Meh ill keep my trusty 7.62x39 or 7.62x54r sure there are better rounds but these two do 99% of what i want in a rifle and work reliably. What more can you ask of a round?

The 6.5 is a lot more accurate at the distances he was saying 800-1000 yard but it loses a lot of energy past 500 yards, past 700 it doesnt compare to a .308 for energy transfer. Its still more accurate so its far better for target shooting at those ranges, but not for hunting. If you seriously want to hunt something at those ranges you need a better round than either imho. That being said most hunters dont shoot game at those distances.

Just got a Barrett 416 model 99. The Barrett 416 is like a 6.5 Creedmore. It’s a neck down 50 bmg just like 6.5 Creedmore is a necked down .308 Better ballistics, less effected by wind, flatter shooting at a longer distance with lighter projectile at 3100 ft per sec.

9mm and 45 have identical energy transfer. 9mm is designed to dump its energy upon impact and 45 does so more progressively. I'll stick with the 9mm, more rounds to put down range. they didn't talk about the 7mm rem mag either. it outclesses the 30-06 in every category, from energy transfer, to external ballistics, to trajectory. the reason the millitary went to the 7mm rem mag for anti-sniper operations was because of the superior accuracy and energy transfer.
@@hanksadventures4132 I only use my 45 for home defense. I feel like the big slow round is actually the best option for stopping and not going thru my neighbors wall. As far as the 7mm vs 30-06 goes. I don't doubt the 7mm is better, but I'm comfortable with the 30-06 and can get ammo anytime, anywhere AND it will kill whatever it hits...

I agree,I miss my browning a bolt in 30-06, but I needed a pickup truck and traded 2 rifles for it. I went to a weatherby in 7mm rem mag,mainly because it is suitable for any big game in north america. I think the 30-06 would be a little light for brown bear but ,,I'll probably never get the chance. 45 acp has awesome knock down power. During WW2 in the Philippines the native people were wrapping themselves with cloth,tightly, a when shot with hardball ammo from a rifle, they would keep coming long enough to chop you up with a machete, before they bled out, but the 45 would knock them flat on their butt. I read they would come at America gi's at close range in the thick jungle. All around I think you did pick the best 3 possible for defense from the 2 legged animals.
Pretty much nobody in the USA is using a 7mm mag. 762 NATO, 6.5 CM, 300 Win Mag, and 338s are used more in warfare and training across every DOD sniper and designated marksman. Not because I was there or anything

I also came to say they skipped the 357 magnum. In my personal experience it’s the perfect all around caliber i can hunt small game or medium game with my Henry carbine with no issues

As to the .22lr.. Shot placement is key. If you enter on RUclips.22lr vs Hog. There is a post of a man who shoots a HUGE hog behind the eye and below the ear and drops the hog instantly with the.22lr and he was using standard velocity ammunition and a rather inexpensive rifle!

I used to hunt with a guy that used a .22 mag to head shot deer.
In my opinion head shots should be avoided. Too much risk of missing the brain and blowing the animals jaw off, leaving the thing to die a slow painful death.
Funny thing, earholes are hard targets to hit compared to a couple of lungs broadside, and those earholes keep moving around so stinking much.
