    I've been in this industry for 17 years.
    I started my freshman year of high-school, at the age of 15. I've seen a lot over the years and have learned so much, and continue to. Getting others ideas, and thought process really helps to think outside the box.
    I really enjoyed your video. You're tips and advice is incredibly spot on. It's a relief to know there are others out there with like minds. I truly enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing! Cheers 🍻

    I can relate to the point you made about working for cheap, I was a mechanic, still am sometimes. I've had SO many people come to me wanting me to fix stuff for near free, buy the parts with my own money, then wait to be paid and sometimes not get paid. Happened more than once. Just because I don't have an actual shop anymore they think they can get to me. They play the sympathy game and all that waa waa I don't have the money, I REALLY need my car to get to work so I can pay you....etc.

    Mike, great video, I can tell you've been doing this for a while, and care about quality and not being the cheapest in town.
    Quite a detailed presentation about the state of the repair business nowadays.
    Unfortunately for whoever wants to get into this biz today, even into board level repair may have missed the boat... between 2000-2015 it was great, but lately it has started to decline, and with electronics getting cheaper and more reliable, there's just less of a demand for this. Now, I'm not saying it will disappear completely, but I feel it's just a bit too late to make a good living.
    Considering the high rents, saturated competition in your area, online competition, cheaper phone insurance plans, new flexible un-crackable screens coming out soon, even components being locked to a specific hardware, it may be wise looking into doing something else... this just in my humble opinion from someone who's been doing it since the 90's.

      All good points Bill and considering that this video is almost a year old I should probably create an updated version. I also plan to discuss this during my next livestream as it is a complex topic but in short we definitely need all factors to coincide in order to be successful at this point. Competition, location, and effective marketing considerations seem to be the most crucial in my opinion. As it has been for the last 5-10 years I think that we are okay for another 2-3 but difficult to say what happens after that. Diversifying into other electronics repair makes sense and whether or not the Right to Repair movement succeeds should have some bearing on our longevity. So far I am skeptical about unbreakable anything especially with the way that manufacturers are getting in on the repair revenue concept now but who knows? Phone insurance plans. Now that one does concern me especially as of late and with carriers pushing them at point of purchase. At the same time _someone_ has to fix those phones and the skill set of many techs employed by those bigger companies... well you can imagine. Anyways you got me thinking about a lot here. Thanks for the comment.

    • @BillAnt
      @BillAnt 6 лет назад +1

      I'll check out your new video once it's out.... also other factors are the region of the country (east coast, west coast, midwest, north/south and in between, big/small cities, demographics etc. For example in smaller cities you don't need 10 repair shops unlike in larger cities one on every corner, like a shark tank the big fish eats the little fish.
      Then you got your "RUclips machanics" who will say "oh why are you charging this or that, it only takes 5 minutes, I saw it on RUclips" ... lol
      And then you have to contend with the Craig's list low-ballers, scammers, and crooks, etc.
      I'm also hearing that some manufacturers are experimenting with encapsulating the entire main board in a silicone coating, effectively solving the liquid damage problem for good... well good for them bad for us I guess.... ya well fun times ahead guys....

      you must be more optimistic we and manufacturers on the same boat , they make phones unbreakable !! , we work less and they sell less .. that is simple .. and nothing still work good for ever

    It's probably not much profitable in the US where buying a new phone is somewhat easy. Here in Brazil (and other latin american coutries) a cellphone is something really expensive that you may take months or even years to buy. So, if your phone breaks, it's much cheaper to get it repaired so people are always looking for repair services. Of course this is much better (environmentally speaking), no one needs a new phone when you can just fix the one you already have.

I know an iPhone repair service abroad that fixes phones at a very low price, do you think it would be a good idea to create a site here in the UK that works in partnership with the company abroad (after i have contacted them and proposed my idea) and sends the broken phones abroad to be fixed. It sounds like a lot of money can be made if I just act like the 'middle man', but how trustworthy will my site look to customers?

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  6 лет назад

      That is a very tough question to answer. First of all where are you located? I can point you to a few suppliers in the US but that list changes every so often. You find someone good and over time start to experience something called "quality fade." The best option is to find a vendor who will come to you and deliver while picking up any defective parts. That way you inspect them in from of the person selling them to you.

    I started out the same way as you did but, I've also done industrial repair and server manufacture. But, who pays well nowadays?
    I''ve done quite a bit and the pay is still pretty crappy. I was thinking of basing a repair company from home, not just phone but, electronics in general as long as it doesn't conflict with my non-compete agreement. Yeah, jobs pay you very little and don't want any competition from former employees. I guess I'm really just frustrated bout the low pay for the most part. Where can you go or what could you do to make a better salary? And do you think telecom is still worth being bothered with? you know KSU's and Voice mail systems.

      There are some repair shops in malls. Most are either standing or in plazas/strip malls at least here in the US. They aren't hard to find at least in most major cities.

      Where is your store located? I know of at least one company in CA that buys them out regularly.

      Please elaborate. Is cell phone repair not profitable anymore? A friend of mine knows a person in NJ who repairs phones but from home, this person has fixed his phones. It appears he is making decent money. I was thinking about learning cell phone repair and starting my own business. Is it worth it? Or too saturated now?

    But there are places that just teach you how to open and replace components. They actually don’t teach you real electronics.

    • @GoCellPhoneRepair
      @GoCellPhoneRepair  5 лет назад

      True. It’s all relative to your goals I suppose. Most repairs these days are modular component replacement but lots of directions that you can go from there.

      Can you elaborate? It's still profitable in the US but adapting to the market is important. There are a lot of repair shops that fail due to fairly common mistakes.

      A few to start with off the top of my head.
      1. Trying to be the cheapest rather than the best.
      2. Poor customer service.
      3. Ineffective marketing.
      4. Wasting time with low profit jobs/customers/employees.
      5. Failing to maintain a positive online rep and good SEO.
