How iFixit Became the World's Best iPhone Teardown Team

- The most important thing that happens when a new iPhone comes out is not the release of the phone, but the disassembly of it. The iPhone teardown, undertaken by third-party teams around the world, provides a roadmap for the life of the iPhone X: Is it repairable? Who made the components inside it? The answers to these questions shift stock markets, electronics design, and consumer experience.
Every year there’s a race to become the first to tear down the phone, with teams from around the world flying to Australia-where it’s first released-to compete to be the first to look inside the world’s most coveted new phone. Motherboard embedded with iFixit, a California-based company whose primary mission is to make it easier for the average person to disassemble and repair their electronics, for its iPhone X teardown.
We went inside iFixit’s office, the “headquarters of the global repair movement, which features a tool laboratory and a parts library with thousands of electronics parts and disassembly tools. Then we went to Sydney, Australia, as iFixit tried to become the first team to tear down the iPhone X.

We followed iFixit on their race to teardown the new iPhone X, literally traveling to the other side of the world to be the first to learn what's inside Apple's latest and greatest.

This was one of the best videos you made yet. Thanks for such great and interesting videos.
Why move your whole business there instead of traveling there when the phones come out every year? Does it make more financial sense to move over there? Is it cheaper less taxes or something as well? Or did i miss understand and they are just going to get the phone?
Motherboard well , i think JerryRigEverything is the best
huaqiangbei ftw
internet here in australia is crap for starters
Man I'd be lost without iFix it. I have fixed so many laptops, desktops, and phones using their guides. They should really be considered a public service. They're like the "Haynes Car Repair Manuals" for the tech world. completely indispensable.
whenever I feel lost I always put teardown iFix too :D
They are just over priced imo
I go back and forth between ifixit and fixez
JerryRigEverything: Am I a joke to you?
@@Trenvhnclipz well they have to make money to pay their staff that makes all of these teardowns and instructions. Other companies just make the tools and don't give you any guides.
you gotta love when companies put "void if removed" stickers, on items sold in the US, to try & scare people to not open devices, even though there is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which has been in place since 1975, making it a federal law, that consumers can open or repair their devices, without warranty being voided.
Companies know that people aren't gonna pursue a lawsuit to get their warranty, so that put the stickers there anyway
It's not true, all it does is make sure companies explicitly detail their warranty
Yeah, that isn't how that law works or has been interpreted. Can't just make up shit and make it reality...
except that's not how it works thou

I love what their lead engineer said "It's not just like the monolith, its not just like this sealed black box - you open it up and there's a battery inside, just like your car, just like your watch..."
This is definitely the first thing you need to realize when you start repairing your own things, there is no magic involved almost anything can be repaired/replaced/deconstructed. Its so beautiful
I used to have dreams. Now my dream is just to fix things for this very same reason. Everything has a fix!
I hope and pray that iFixit will last for a long long time. This is one of those movements that led to real change.
*The right to repair* can boost the economic activity for the people who offer repair services !
Planned obsolescence should be illegal too !
LOL the Australian government will wait till the rest of the world has a Right To Repair law then copy the most shit version of the law they can. that's all they do these days is copy laws from other country's.

It’s amazing the great lengths you have to go through to be ahead of your game. On RUclips, the viewers including myself unfortunately take these videos for granted, not appreciating how much effort it takes to make these short teardown video of the latest gadgets. Even though you’re highly rewarded for your efforts, respect because you earned it.jay

I am really glad to see IFixIt to be the best company when it comes to phone tear down manuals. I repaired my Xperia ZL by watching their manuals. It was an amazing experience. It gave me a sense of fulfilment that I was able to repair my own device as an Electronics and Telecommunication Engineer. Thanks to IFixIt. All the best to you guys.

"I'm excited about the teardown, I'm not excited that there's a new phone in the world" - man after my own heart
I’d like to hear more from this guy being interviewed. He seems like a interesting tech guy
He is a really cool dude, got the chance to attend a conference he spoke at recently and he completely changed the way I view tech recycling.
kuwait85 🤔 Tell me, what is the qualification needed to be a ✌️_"Tech guy"_✌️ ? That is an extremely non-descript, vague, all-encompassing umbrella term to shove anyone and everyone under, from someone who feels they're "qualified" to plug in a wall charger, to a NASA engineer who has an IQ that would soar to the sun of it's own volition, and generally bundle all the average people together with the *EXCEPTIONALLY* gifted ones, to sound all fuzzy and smart, so the NOT so clever ones feel equally special... wowwww... "Tech guy" - what a schmuck, idiotic phrase.
unlokia, uhh are you okay?
Wow, triggered much? That's an odd rant you've gone off on over a perfectly normal and totally in context phrase there buddy.
@unlokia If you don't see the subject as "exceptionally gifted," something bigger is wrong with you. Given your rant, we already know you were dropped on your head, so how about some therapy?
MECCA! As a former fruitstand employee, and iFixit wholesaler, iFixit is my hero, and my go-to for parts and tear-down manuals. And Vice is our favorite news source.
iFixIt increased the life of 3 of my Mac's likely by years.

then stop buying macs or stuff made by apple.. there we go i just saved you getting ripped off by apple.

Jonathan Watson You do realize it's not just apple doing this right? Most manufacturers do this unfortunately.
Microsoft do it with the Xbox. If you want to open an Xbox 360 you either need a specialist tool or you need to have a lot of patience.
When I had an Xbox 360, I had the overheating problem with it. I contacted Microsoft thinking it was still warranty and that I could ship it off for free repair. It turns out the warranty expired by less than a week and I was informed that I could buy a new Xbox at a reduced price. I think it was £100 that they wanted.
I ended up fixing the problem myself by opening the Xbox, removing the heatsink and replacing the thermal compound, it took less than an hour and cost less than £10.
If I brought a new Xbox it would have last for a year, maybe 2 at a push. For £10 though I managed to make it last for 3 more years. It would have last longer if I didn't drop down the stairs when moving house.

Hahaha
How did you notice it??
Abhishek Dev no clue XD
I've seen nothing better than this on the internet. That guy behind iFixit is amazing
Imagine if a car's manual was protected under a copyright and made you buy new models each year, or so, instead of having to know the issues, the features and the parts of the vehicle to learn how to fix it yourself.
Imagine if Ikea furnitures were like this...
_Paws_ No I don't want to. That would be scary.
There was something like that. ruclips.net/video/F8JCh0owT4w/видео.html
And then comes the CAN bus, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and good old knowledge. It would make our lives a lot harder but it might just work only if they can see everything you do to the car.
Car companies are hoping to get there also...
Thats how it is for John Deere tractors, and spare parts use encryption based on serial number of tractor so you usually can't even swap parts unless they're properly programmed, which can only be done from the dealership.
That setup at 1:24 is a standalone setup environment. I love it
Ifixit accidently printed into consumer version of oculus touch controllers for Rift S and Quest.
What a great marketing plan!
Very cool video. This guy is what tens of thousands of RUclipsrs WISH they were, but they don't realize the hard work and commitment it takes. No self-proclamation needed.

Ursus Discursus this is sooo stupid
I just went and subscribed to ifixit. I'm a huge supporter of DIY repair and electronics engineering and I completely agree and believe in ifixit's model of business. Putting the power in people's hands while making a profit. It's a win/win.
Thank you guys for the hard work you put out there for the simple man to deal with complex mechanisms.
🤘🏻 You rock iFixit!!!
I'm big on consumer electronics and this is way more entertaining than I thought it could be.
The concept helps consumers get their full value out of their products
The most important thing, you guys (iFixit Team) have been educated a lot of people about the stuff that they using. Not only what's inside it but also to understand how the machine working. Some people think they can't able to repair their stuff at home, i do also actually, but with all the step by step guide in iFixit, now we can do exactly what we need to do before star to repair. It's very useful information and more education on it.
iFixit is awesome. I've used them several times.

I love what ifixit do, i repair my own iPhone and mac 6 times by watching their videos and website , ifixit is awesome, they are the only confident.
Saswathi, you repaired it, tore it apart and fixed it again and gain six times. Due you are loco
I have a whole new respect for iFixit now, what a great story and so interesting to me since I have been taking things apart for as long as I can remember and have repaired hundreds of iPhones.
That iPhone board blew my mind.
So how is your mind still able to function, causing you to be able to type?
I know it might be difficult for people on the autistic spectrum to understand figurative speech. Don't worry, I'm here to help. He was just meaning to say that he found the board to be incredible because it was so meticulously crafted.
Thus Apple's decision many years ago to take chip design in-house. When they need a super-chip 12 years later, their chip engineers are ready to do it.
And they said samsung makes the greatest..! Just take look at that chip bru..!
@Gaurav Bhandari I dont know if you know this, but samsung literally manufactures apple chips. C'mon iSheep atleast do some research!
Wow! I found a new level of respect for the iFixit team.
Did u see when he was showing the group he said this is where they live lmao

You guys realize that New Zealand is ahead of Australia by 2 hours. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
I dont care, unless it was posted on instagram
Maybe NZ isn't on the list of iPhone launch countries.
Why you quoting review brah
Earlier but definitely don't have the microchip factory
Maybe they are in new zealand but said australia, so everyone knows there it is
I love the fact that ifixit has such a huge community of not only there team but also there's tech's from all over the world that be live in the right to repair.
this is actually SO interesting! :)
As a smartphone repair shop owner myself, I respect iFixit and the entire team tremendously! This video was amazing. Thank you Motherboard for giving us the in-depth effort of what iFixit goes through to provide the public with the information that Apple and other billion dollar companies are trying to prevent the public to see.
Great video, wonderful interviews.
What a knowledgeable and humble group of people. I never knew about iFixit until right now. :/
I love these types of videos; very knowledgeable and intuitive.😉
I'm not a huge fan of Apple, however this really makes you appreciate the amount of time, effort and money the engineers have spent on the iPhone X. And iFixit's dedication to the job. They make repairing your own devices sooooo, so much easier. Kudos Motherboard and iFixit! And thanks for stopping by Australia

wow qualcom has been at it for even longer than i thought

I think he means how many man hours have gone into actually designing it. As in if 200 people put 100 hours of man work into it, that's 20,000 hours of work into the product
I had the honour of talking with Kyle Wiens through his Reddit AMA on January 6th, he even gifted me the "Repair Business Toolkit" for free!
Such an amazing individual! He always tries to push the boundaries of repairability in all devices, from iPhones to cars to everything in between.
Thanks for your work, Kyle!
*This is very revealing!*
_All along I thought _*_iFixit_*_ is a big repair company._
It's *open source* and that really 🆒!
If the iFixit team is reading this, miss you guys! Best job I've ever had, I still salivate thinking about the Tuesday Thursday lunches. Keep killing it!
"Congratulations you got the first iPhone X what are you going to do with it?"

Thats a strong point right there. "in order to fix things, first you gotta believe in yourself... "
Ironically,Jerry rig everything who uses ifixit is more popular than them
Vedraj r.m true
no he's not, he uses his own tool
It's okay, both of them want to help the people. That's cool for me.
yea that's the goal they want the same goal help those fix and repair their devices
He doesn't use ifixit he takes it apart and helps people with repairing it on their own
I started disassembling my toys when i was kid, it was more fascinating than playing with them, i wanted to see how they work. Now i started to not just take apart, but assemble smartphones, all kinds of computers and seeing them turn back on it's like magic. And Ifixit is a big relief because all kinds of people come together to share knowledge from their experience. It's like the library for the tinkering geeks all over the world!
hehe 907 authorized apple service workers gave thumbs down :( eh how sad this is..
And one little suggestion: I would love to see board schematics on the site!
I'm using a 5 yo Lenovo laptop and I managed to upgrade the RAM, thermal paste and even adding a second SSD by removing the DVD drive from the bay. All these were done with the help of a simple maintainance guide provided by Lenovo. I was able to buy a simple screwdriver kit (only one type of Philip screwhead was needed btw), teardown the laptop to the stage where the entire keyboard, cooling fan, and even the motherboard were removed for cleaning and new thermal paste was applied. Additional software optimisation was done and now the processor is able to playback 4K video like it would 5 years ago! RAW files can be handled by Lightroom easily and Premiere CC is also able to keep up it...
Thanks to this video, I always used to think iFixit was just a tech review page. This video has taught me about their brilliant website. It's taught me that I can actually order repair kits and parts for most of the products I own at AFFORDABLE PRICES. I would spend a lot taking them to repair shops just because I never had the things required. Thank you for this incredible video!

keep up the good work, ifixit! Spread the word about right to repair laws, the people need to know that they can fix their things, and fight the lobbies, call congress, take back ownership of our own things. Thanks for what you do!
They inspire many amateur technicians I bet, good thing such people like Kyle exist in a world full of companies that are doing their best to implement consumerism. Good job guys!
To say the iphone has the most thought put into it's design out of all things we've ever created is both bizarre and completely false.
That being said I love what iFixit is doing and I hope they continue. Great video.
"Most thought out carefully design " that's an overstatement.
Kyle Wiens of iFixit is one of my personal heroes. I still have their Repair Manifesto on my wall. The whole first to teardown thing always struck me as a bit wankery, but the whole team has a genuine conviction about the right to repair and I commend them for that.
Mike Trieu I'm very dubious just how genuine it is. He runs a company that sells parts. The more things that you can repair the more parts they can sell. Their concern is mostly for their bottom-line, I doubt it's a genuine concern about anything else
Love the movement of empowering the public on taking back control of our everyday necessities
No matter how smart Manufactures are. There is always people way smarter then they are. As people want to know how things works. Then fix them or make them better! One reason manufactures are out gunned. They have a product release date to meet. The iFixit team. Is not under such restrictions.
One reason I support. The right to repair laws. It makes people smarter!
I'm very grateful for iFixit and their great employees.
My old iPhone 4S is still working because of their battery replacement.
They behave like biologists that discovered a new species, but instead of a creature it is a machine/device.
_Paws_ if people think this nonsense is astounding, then... that shows how dumb people are... 🤷
unlokia well the stuff that tiny thing is able to do is actually pretty damn astounding... its just that most people don't need a fraction of that
unlokia - not sure if you hate Apple products or not...the discovery of something is astounding even if it may just be a common item. Can you engineer a device like that if not better?
I am not an Apple fan myself but a small machine capable of doing any of those things maybe trivial to someone who doesn't need it, I guess.
I became addicted to putting stuff together through these guys. First reached out when my OnePlus 2 had a string of defects: home button wasn't working properly, and the buttons to either side had uneven brightness. Camera was blurred. So I learned how to replace every single one of these elements through iFixit, bought the parts - already had the tools from previously needing them for my Macbook.
In a time where the generational gap between each smartphone launch is narrower and narrower, in a time where the price hike doesn't reflect on the actual upgrade on the phones, the smartphone industry is reaching its endgame, and so they need to plan the obsolescence of their products in order to keep selling. We might not have a modular smartphone, but with the right tools and knowledge, we probably will never need to buy a new smartphone again.
Great video, thank you. Hope the right to repair goes through in US and the rest of the world will follow
It's going to be a tough slog, particularly in the US where corruption in the form of dollars put into the reelection coffers of politicians by lobbyists, is legal. This issue is complicated, and way above the heads of just about every single politician, judge, and rank-and-file political leader, not to mention the typical citizen. Intellectual property law is way behind the times, and technology is outstripping the ability of the legislative and adjudicative processes to keep up with its advance.
As you say, the "legislative and adjudicative processes"
"are in the process of losing it because they are too stiff. They will inevitably lose authority through their own belief in old systems, systems which are losing respect", said another helpless soul.
is ifix not avaliable in the usa?
I like these guys, doing well and fighting the throw away industry.
