Also thanks for the info on the SD cards - I use the Kingston 512K in both of my BMPCC shooting raw at 24fps. Another important step is getting a cheap reliable external battery setup. I am using a small rig battery plate with Sony NP-F970 high capacity batteries for external power into the DC in. I never worry about a low battery again. Again, affordable option. Thanks to Will, for inspiring me to take a step back and just stick with the basics and learn the craft.
Great video! I had my BMPCC hd from 2014 to 2018 and really enjoyed it. Sold it to get the BMPCC4K in October 2018 and never looked back. BM colour science is the way to go!
That's exactly what I did last year - only with a Fujifilm X-T1. While everyone was upgrading to iPhone 12 I sold my 11 Pro and bought the camera and 35/1.4. Haven't ever gotten such beautiful images before, despite me doing photography part time almost half my life and trying out around 20 different cameras through the years. I really liked this video. I think the message is clear: if you want to make movies, this can work. Don't focus on the technology, focus on the craft. Well done. I would recommend this video to my students or anyone that wants to make movies.
I bought one last year, it's now my B Camera, but I shot a boatload of footage on this thing, super versatile camera with great image quality, and you can rig this guy out wonderfully.
Your presentation is so well done. I felt like you were talking to me. You left out the cutesy stuff and just explained the merits of this camera in 2020 and how to take advantage of it. Thank you!!!
Thank you thank you. I was lucky enough to be given this camera. Not being a film person I found you video very informative , even if I am not going down your line of work, I will be going down the broadcasting live route... so keep up the great videos, for people like me that just need that little help. Thanks Carl! I actually got my start in Broadcasting--with almost 4 years with the NBC affiliates in Reno and Boise. Let me know if there are any videos you would like to see addressing topics in that field!
Will von Tagen Thanks Will for the reply. I am currently working for BBC (Wales) but my passion is beach Volleyball and while I am decommissioning the Old BBC broadcasting building I have the opportunity to have a lot of old unneeded equipment and what i am trying to do is setup videoing live streaming of ALL the courts at my new beach volleyball centre...so any advice tutorials always welcome.
You did an awesome job brother. I'm with you. These new age wanna be DPs are too lazy to create. They are caught up on camera manufacturer hype and any large number with a K at the end of it. SMDH...They want to rely on the camera to do everything and they just hit record button. I come from film. Where your camera gives you what you design by the way you light it and create with it. I shot a full feature with the Canon 60D and till today, no one believes I shot that with a 60D...Some said Sony F3, some said Red Scarlet. But I shot it with a 60D. Camera doesn't make a film, is the person behind the camera that creates the image and a camera is just a tool to captures it.

Superb. I shot quite a few scenes with this camera before I had to sell it in 2016. Lately I’ve been looking at the BMC 4K but watching this makes me realise how much I miss it.

Awesome video just found your channel. I was looking on ebay here in the states I did not see anything close to your price point but maybe in the future ill get lucky!
I’ve had this camera since 2014 and i still love it till this day! Its such a shame Blackmagic got them out of production. I wish they kept making them or atleast update it and keep the same housing. This camera’s a dream!
I agree, as is truly a pocket camera. The 4K is barely pocket size. They should kept the production for this and also kept the 1080p to keep it as a consumer camera.
liked and subbed. Great vid man, and smooth natural delivery! I got one of these last year on the recommendation of my teacher. He showed me the link and I was like "Noel, that's 7 years old" He just looked at me and repeated, "this is the camera you want" I'm still learning, and like you said, the curve was pretty steep. Just about 25% through a Udemy grading course, and it's really starting to open my eyes to the possibilities. Best of luck!

Thanks for the great video on the original BMPCC. Especially addressing low light with this camera. I’ve recently expanded my creative media agency with services in video and filmmaking. Even within my budget limitations I was able to purchased 4 of the original pocket cameras at a price that I consider to be a steal. I recently started shooting music videos and local TV commercials, as a one-man production, I’ll set up all 4 cameras, one fully rigged camera on a tripod, one camera on a slider, one camera on a gimbal and a fourth camera on a shoulder rig. During a shoot I don’t have the need to strip down a camera from the tripod and re-rig it for the slider or balance it on a gimbal, Using multiple cameras this way, gives me freedom to quickly choose/change angles and shots during production...moving from one camera to another and then back-and-forth.
This is the third time I watch this video Finally after having bought it myself, with two vintage cine lenses Looking forward to learning how to use it

Totally! I also used it frequently before, but sold it a little over a year ago to get the 4K. I did always miss the look and compact nature of the OG, so I recently picked up another one to also have for easier travel and gimbal use (or just more casual projects).

@@WillvonTagen does it work well with a gimbal? I'm considering getting a BMPCC for a documentary project that will be mostly shot with a gimbal or a tripod, and a bit worried about the lack of autofocus in an uncontrolled setting. The gimbal would solve the stabilisation issues but wondering if that doesn't make it more difficult to keep the image in focus? Thanks so much in advance if you have a minute to answer!

Absolutely! I was just matching the OG to my 4K last week after filming an interview and the gen4 synced it right up! Amazing. Yes, i have had a few requests for lighting videos! I will try and get to one soon :) Thanks for watching!
I am rocking my Magic Lantern equipped $100 EOS M which after todays update shoots 2.7K RAW 24p. Even 5K with lower frame rates. APS-C with a $80 speedbooster makes it 1.1x crop - almost FF. I think it’s the better deal for a cheap mirrorless.

Great video. I considered selling my BMPCC but have kept it to experiment with raw video and DaVinci Resolve. It is a great educational tool in that aspect.
I've been thinking about buying this camera but still haven't. I really love the BMPCC 4k. I think the BMPCC has to be used in the right hands because I've seen some nice footage of it here in YT but I've seen more bad ones. Anyways, good content man. Just subscribed. Plus I appreciate that you actually do films and have them streaming unlike many so called filmmakers who just do a lot of tech talk but never have anything to show. I'll be seeing Heritage soon. Stay safe.
Thanks for this good video! It's been a while that I want to get my hands on it. But they are becoming expensive. It will be an amazing upgrade from my G7. These blackmagic colors are sooo good. Did you use it to film 'Almosting It' ? It looks amazing. It was a pleasure to come across your video !
They are great cameras and I think you will enjoy it after the G7 :) I used to pocket for "Heritage" (my second film). Almosting It was actually shot on a RED Epic-MX. In a lot of ways I did prefer the BMPCC over the RED, but the RED is certainly an amazing tool as well :)
@@WillvonTagen Oh thanks for the answer, the RED Epic-MX is definitly an amazing camera as well. Heritage's footage is really good, the BMPCC is fantastic. Greetings from France :)
I bought one about a year ago. I love it! The picture quality is as good as the 4k and 6k, only with the common (but minor) flaws of 1080p. Then again, who really focuses enough to lose clarity? It works seamlessly with Divinci Resolve too. The only problem I had is that it overheats sometimes. I enjoy it ALMOST as much as my Canon EOS 750D (the GOAT budget camera).
@@noodlessoul8356, A Canon EOS 750D, is the best multipurpose camera I've ever seen, even by today's standards. Fact: Canon EOS DSLRs are commonly used to shoot b-roll for Marvel Comics movies. Out of the box, it's great for blogging and films. The video quality is so good that minimal post-production is necessary. Get it and a GOOD lens, and you can shoot anything. Also, it never overheats, the battery life is decent, and it shoots very well in low light. All you need is a few extra batteries, and you're set. You pick up a used body for around $500 and a cheap Canon 50mm lens for about $100.
Once again, great video. Your presentation is concise, informative and it is easy to see your passion for the craft of filmmaking. The color science of this reviewed camera, coupled with the internal Raw capabilities, and the price point, make it a great option for many indie filmmakers. My mind set has always been "It's not the camera, it's the shooter"; a "Master of Light" can make something cinematic with any camera. That said, if someone doesn't already have a high quality camera, then this is a great option, albeit, as you stipulated, a little longer learning curve than some other options, meaning DSLR's. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You never fail to hold my interest from beginning to end.
Thank you for this video. I'm really looking forward to using this camera and while I've been waiting Ive been using Davinci and finding bmpcc footage to correct and grade and I'm loving the process and the freedom that comes with LOG footage. And its super filmic. I have a family of vintage lenses for this. My budget didnt allow for this Panasonic Lens... yet. But soon GREAT VIDEO

@@WillvonTagen I've now just bought this camera for the first time after buying the 6k Pro recently too. I've posted a couple of videos about the BMPCC original (OG) on my channel. Love it! That Fairchild super 16 sensor is amazing. So filmic! I got a very strange but beautiful circular flare about 5 mins and 50 seconds into my 'Blackmagic BMPCC Original LEICA ELMARIT-R 28mm f2.8 Peter McKinnon 2 Variable ND Filter 2-5 Mist' video I just posted - if you have time to check it out, can you give me my opinion on it? Not sure if it was the VND I was using! Either way, I love the Sun bursts and lens flares I'm getting from this camera!
Yes, the internal audio (even via a mic) is terrible. I always have recorded the audio separately with this. But for a production camera that is pretty typical I think.
Dude... I watched this entire video thinking you had a million subscribers or something. Blown away by your candidness and insight. Definitely subscribing. I'm really interested in learning cinematography at a deeper level. I currently own a Sony A7iii but I was looking for a cheap cine set up. Would you still recommend this for me? Thank you again!
Wow, thank you! Yes, the channel is pretty new and I am only doing it in my spare time right now. Thanks for the support! The a7iii is a great camera, but I have never been a fan of Sony's color science--especially that you have to shoot in such a high ISO to get the most from Log. I think it depends on what your Cine needs will be. This is definitely an outstanding option and gives some of the best images possible, but as I say--it can be a bit tricky when first starting off. If you have patience and can add some of the supplementary peripherals I mentioned I think it could definitely be a game changer for your output--and a nice variation from your Sony. Stay tuned, in a couple of days I am releasing a new video discussing the memory cards for this camera. Thanks again!
I think any camera you feel comfortable with will serve you well. If you build it up right I see no reason why it wouldn't work--but be sure you have a lens with IS or a full shoulder rig. Thanks for watching!
damn needed that video like 6months ago... i bought the bmpcc4k. like yes its great, butnto great for me, file sizes and the camera itself. i love to film trips with friends and damn this little thing would be perect for that
I own and use a BMPCC OG. For your feature films, what audio equipment do you use? I’m in the process of making a feature on a budget and I don’t know what boom mic to get. I already have an H4N Zoom recorder.
For the first round of principle photography we had a pretty pro kit--but I am not sure what all was included. However, for a number of reshoots (60% of the final film) we did use a stripped down budget kit. I would recommend the H6N over the H4N, as having the ability to dial the input levels of each track while filming is crucial. Beyond that we had 2x Sennheiser ew 100 Wireless Lav microphones as well as a mix of Rode NTG3 and Sennheiser MKE 600 shotgun mics (depending on when the filming was occurring). All actors had a wireless on as backup with the boom serving as the main source. The boom was just a cheap, carbon fiber pole off of Amazon--I don't recall the brand at the moment. Remember--you can always sell your gear after the shoot. And if you purchase used--often you can resell it for exactly what you paid. So stretch that dollar as far as you can, and even if you don't think you can afford something, remember: you can look at it as more of a "free rental" after resale and only get gear on project-to-project basis. Sound is very important--so definitely try your best to get "good enough" gear and ideally someone who has experience field recording. Get the shotgun as close as possible to your actors.
I think this video just because my new "intro bible" to the BMPCC OG (and I hate that we have to add that now, to get any useful google searches for the OG.) I've had my camera for almost 5 years, and I've been struggling with how to set it up for me so that I'm gonna be happy. I have a 19mm MFT lens that works great, but I have to move if I want to change my field of view, it gets lame...I just picked up a 12-35 thanks to this video ($350, from Japan, and it looks like it's never been used). That was the last piece of the puzzle. I have Canon glass, but not in the 12-35 range, which makes this setup just about perfect.
If you buy uses make sure you don't get one of the cameras with white orb or black spot issues. I have two of the BMPCC and love them I also have a Sigma fp (which I think is better than the BMPCC 4k) as I have multiple Sigma lenses and love that. The advantage of BMPCC is OIS lenses, the disadvantages are DOF and not doing 4k. Another disadvantage is that it is virtually impossible to find SD cards that works with it nowadays. So make sure you check that out before buying (unless Sandisk 95Mb/s SD card is included)
Really enjoyed the video. I've had my bmpcc since 2013 and the one issue I've yet to resolve is battery life. I haven't seen many people exploring the Juicebox Magic Power 2.0 and I'm curious if that's because there is something less than ideal about it or if it isn't well known. The price is comparable to the solution you've put in this video and it seems to be more of an all-in-one solution, which I think would be easier for mounting.
Raw is significantly better for color grading. It also allows you to use the full dynamic range of the sensor-maintaining more highlights and shadows. It’s all around a much better format for working. However if ProRes gets you the results you want-that works just fine as well 👍🏻
I had never thought much about this camera i may have to find one i can borrow and try out for a C camera. I shoot bands so low light is important and often i have no control there, but this may still be ok. Worth a shot anyway.
Sure! Try it out. If this is the stage camera where you have a lot of lights it shouldn't be a problem. Could also be easy to hide on stage for a live performance.
Hahaha, I don't know that I mean as a literal crash cam--I use that more as a term for a camera you can put in a risky situation without worrying about losing Thousands of Dollars if something goes wrong. Sounds like you had a fun shoot though!
nice vid well done. I first saw that camera advertised in shutterbug magazine years ago and have always wanted one. will the first generation shoot raw video?
Hi! Yes it does shoot raw. Keep in mind this is actual, DNG Raw and not like the BRAW that the new 4k shoots. DNG is actually better, but requires some workaround with the edits.
you can attach the battery adapter with or without the cage. Simply screw it into the screw mount on the camera or on any of the available mounts on the cage if that is what you are using :)
How shall one compare the OG pocket camera with the little larger 4k pocket camera? for what needs and projects should I consider to buy the Pocket 4K over the OG pocket? or should I not even reflect upon this and jut get the OG pocket as soon as possible and get started filming? my one concern that do come to mind is the Live broadcast function Black Magic added to their cameras... Can one use that on the OG pocket or only on the newer cameras of 4k and 6 k? and how useful is this link live broadcast system by Black Magic compared to do it in any other way with the OG pocket?... and lastly how should one go live by the OG pocket to for example RUclips or instagram?
Great questions. If streaming and going live is absolutely needed then I would go with the 4K mostly for the audio. The internal mics are far superior and if you plug in via XLR then it is very very good. The OG has terrible sound even with a mic via the 3.5mm Jack. For any good sound using the OG it must be recorded separate and then synced in post.
@@WillvonTagen thanks for getting back! I sent you an email now as I also got interested in the accessories you showed in another video for the camera, like the cage and so on as well as interested to learn more about filmmaking by you. Hope talk further over email! Sounds to me now like the OG is more of a camera for a filmmaker to go out in the city in silence and capture the direct shots one want and then later catch the ambient sounds or interviews on an external audio recorder like a ZOOM for example and add all sounds in post, while the the 4K is more of a modern day social media, or quick studio camera where you can catch everything internally directly like a reportage for news, or filming a music festival or use it for lives streaming a RUclips channel ? As if they are two very different ways to work with film? -OG seems like a camera being a tool focused on the silent poetic filmmakers work to catch everything internally, both mechanically the way the camera is built but also a tool to work more internally on the mental side with ones own views as a filmmaker with what one see while out n' about alone in the city and not at all in collaboration with others at the time?... - an Observers documentary tool? -while the pocket 4k seem now as a tool being more of a social media or studio camera for working directly in collaboration, interacting, with others to create live steam content, like to capture interviews, sounds and everything needed directly at location with a lot less post production needed to be done? thanks for getting back!

Will von Tagen they are indeed. I am waiting for my BMPCC4K to arrive but I’m so keen to save up for a camera that’s just fun for me for personal films etc to keep me excited. I think this little guy is it! Thanks again. Keep sharing on YT
Fortunate to own one of these when I found one being sold on social media. The filmic / cinematic look is still awesome to this day.
Great video! Glad to see someone NOT bashing the OGBMPCC.
Always! Love that camera :)
your original videos on this are the reason I bought the camera months ago. Its cool to see you in my recommendeds doing a talking head about it lol
I appreciate it! :)
I really liked this video. I think the message is clear: if you want to make movies, this can work. Don't focus on the technology, focus on the craft. Well done. I would recommend this video to my students or anyone that wants to make movies.
Thanks Gerald! :)
Great review thanks.👍

Beautiful shots! I agree I LOVED my OG BMPCC!
Wow, thanks man :)
U made me fall in love with my bmpcc again thank you
Of course! Such a great camera :)
I bought one last year, it's now my B Camera, but I shot a boatload of footage on this thing, super versatile camera with great image quality, and you can rig this guy out wonderfully.
That's great! :)
Thank you for this video. I am getting back into videography and your experience really helps.
Glad I could help!
Your presentation is so well done. I felt like you were talking to me. You left out the cutesy stuff and just explained the merits of this camera in 2020 and how to take advantage of it. Thank you!!!
Thank you so much 🙂
In a spin, I'm loving the spin I'm in,
Under that old black magic called love.
Digging the videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks Hermano!
Thank you thank you. I was lucky enough to be given this camera. Not being a film person I found you video very informative , even if I am not going down your line of work, I will be going down the broadcasting live route... so keep up the great videos, for people like me that just need that little help. Carl
Love this. I have the 4K and 6K and am thinking about grabbing one for gimbal work myself.
I literally just ordered one on gear focus because of you. Thanks man.
Great to hear! Hope you enjoy it :)
Great video Will, as an avid BMPCC fan it's great to see another channel raving about it in a world crammed with spec-chasing.

Great vid! Definitely a BMD fan boy too, but the bmpcc OG is such a a wonderful camera- it’s crossed over into being a classic!
Totally agree!

@@WillvonTagen Honestly love your work man! and you've convinced me to spend more money haha
Superb. I shot quite a few scenes with this camera before I had to sell it in 2016. Lately I’ve been looking at the BMC 4K but watching this makes me realise how much I miss it.
The 4K is also an mazing camera. Hard to go wrong with anything from BM :)
@@WillvonTagen- also hard to go wrong with your videos! Without exaggeration or doubt, you are posting the most informative and valuable videos on film production I have ever seen. Of the things you say which i know, you echo my thoughts exactly, and of things you say that I didn't know, you are pulling back the curtain. Thank you, please carry on.
By far the best review on this camera. Thanks for not trying to get cute or politically correct or trying to be too smart!
Hahaha, thanks Jeff! I appreciate it :)
You made so many good points here, and just about this gorgeous camera. Solid advice.

I own all of the first gen cameras. They're terrific!
Agreed! :)
been looking at going outside my budget for a bmpcc 4k and you're kind of blowing my mind right now.
It's a great little camera for sure!
I’ve had this camera since 2014 and i still love it till this day! Its such a shame Blackmagic got them out of production. I wish they kept making them or atleast update it and keep the same housing. This camera’s a dream!
Agreed! Probably my favorite camera to use.
I agree, as is truly a pocket camera. The 4K is barely pocket size. They should kept the production for this and also kept the 1080p to keep it as a consumer camera.
liked and subbed. Great vid man, and smooth natural delivery! I got one of these last year on the recommendation of my teacher.
He showed me the link and I was like "Noel, that's 7 years old"
He just looked at me and repeated, "this is the camera you want"
I'm still learning, and like you said, the curve was pretty steep. Just about 25% through a Udemy grading course, and it's really starting to open my eyes to the possibilities.
Best of luck!

They need to relaunch this camera
Agreed
That's fantastic! Congrats on getting such a great deal!
This is the third time I watch this video
Finally after having bought it myself, with two vintage cine lenses
Looking forward to learning how to use it
Good luck and have fun! :)
@@WillvonTagen thanks, is it just me or is incredibly hard to get a proper focus due to the LCD display?
@@SuperEchinacea Turn on the focus peaking for sure. But also--a little known trick--if you double-click the "ok" button it will punch in on the image for easier focusing ;)
@@WillvonTagen thanks for the tips🙏
Your video definitely made me buy the camera
I love love love this camera. First camera I ever bought. Shot my first short film on this. Now I have the new BM 4K/6K and URSA, but I gave this to my little sister and she uses it for alll of her projects. If you’re looking for a cheap camera, this is 100% the way to go! Even considering picking another one of these up for easy gimbal work 🙏🏻
Totally! I also used it frequently before, but sold it a little over a year ago to get the 4K. I did always miss the look and compact nature of the OG, so I recently picked up another one to also have for easier travel and gimbal use (or just more casual projects).
Give me one please, I'm an aspiring screenwriter and director who wants to tell a story through motion pictures, inspired by people like me who also strive for the same interest
Thanks so much in advance if you have a minute to answer!
yey!! nice review !! i bought this camera for 450$ used and i am enjoying it !!

Been loving the videos lately, I'd like to see a video of your practical lighting setups, specifically to use in a a micro budget feature setting. Thanks!
Absolutely! I was just matching the OG to my 4K last week after filming an interview and the gen4 synced it right up! Amazing. Yes, i have had a few requests for lighting videos! I will try and get to one soon :) Thanks for watching!
The Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera is still the favourite camera for Film Students. A host of CCTV lenses are still out there.
Great camera 👍🏻👍🏻
I am rocking my Magic Lantern equipped $100 EOS M which after todays update shoots 2.7K RAW 24p. Even 5K with lower frame rates. APS-C with a $80 speedbooster makes it 1.1x crop - almost FF. I think it’s the better deal for a cheap mirrorless.
Sounds like a great combo!

please tell BM design to relaunch it. its so small and portable. Id totally by it

Great video. I considered selling my BMPCC but have kept it to experiment with raw video and DaVinci Resolve. It is a great educational tool in that aspect.
Such a great way to learn :)
I've been thinking about buying this camera but still haven't. I really love the BMPCC 4k. I think the BMPCC has to be used in the right hands because I've seen some nice footage of it here in YT but I've seen more bad ones. Anyways, good content man. Just subscribed.
Totally agree, it's a great camera. Thanks for watching!
You prefer the Canon DSLR? Why goat?
Wow, thank you very much for the kind words. I am glad you find them useful :)
Thank you for this video. I'm really looking forward to using this camera and while I've been waiting Ive been using Davinci and finding bmpcc footage to correct and grade and I'm loving the process and the freedom that comes with LOG footage. And its super filmic.

I’ve heard the audio is a big problem even when using an external microphone. Can you please tell me anything you know about that?
Yes, the internal audio (even via a mic) is terrible. I always have recorded the audio separately with this. But for a production camera that is pretty typical I think.
@@WillvonTagen good to know. Thanks dude!
does anybody know where i can get a replacement screen for my bmpcc original ?
Great video and very informative. Do you think this camera is good for a wedding filmmaker? Love to hear your take on it. Thanks Will.
I think any camera you feel comfortable with will serve you well. If you build it up right I see no reason why it wouldn't work--but be sure you have a lens with IS or a full shoulder rig. Thanks for watching!
damn needed that video like 6months ago... i bought the bmpcc4k. like yes its great, butnto great for me, file sizes and the camera itself. i love to film trips with friends and damn this little thing would be perect for that
Such a wonderful camera! Thanks for watching :)
Get the shotgun as close as possible to your actors.
dude this knowledge is gold 🙏
Thank you! Glad you think so!
I think this video just because my new "intro bible" to the BMPCC OG (and I hate that we have to add that now, to get any useful google searches for the OG.)
I've had my camera for almost 5 years, and I've been struggling with how to set it up for me so that I'm gonna be happy.
Great tips. I am actually shooting a new video today to address the Memory Cards. After a series of tests I found some solutions for everyone.
Are there any other benefits of shooting RAW on the BMPCC besides being able to adjust settings such as white balance and ISO in post?
Dunno if I would recommend it as a crash cam. We put it in a car flip and it shut off when the rams fired. Also the lens was sheared off.
How do you get 105mm from a 2x crop faster. Shoot in 4K when you get the budget. You’re not talking about full sensor.
Hi, you put the battery adapter on the cage? and how fix it on the cage?
you can attach the battery adapter with or without the cage.
