I’m not an expert but I’ve been to four of their concerts so far and they are not pitch corrected. They’ve sang without the microphones and sound just as perfect.
Thank you for analyzing this one! In my opinion, Home Free is the best at stripping down songs of reverence and introspect in a way that just hits hard but in the best way possible. Their versions of What We Ain’t Got and Go Rest High On That Mountain are perfect examples of this. I just love them! ❤
This song seems to resonate so strongly with many of us who had dysfunctional families while growing up. I can’t imagine it being done any other way (I generally don’t listen to much modern music). Thanks for your respectful and constructive analysis!
Thanks for your analysis. I love Home Free's version of this beautiful song. This is in my top 5 songs by them. They really brought out the emotion of it. Tim's lead is amazing with his deep bass. Also love Rob & Chance's solos plus the great harmonies. And Adam is tasteful in making the simple sound of pounding his chest & thigh. I believe we can change our course in life. We don't have to make the same mistakes as our parents. We can choose to rise above it.
Such beautiful harmonies. It always amazes me that five such unique voices can blend so seamlessly - and take over from each other without interrupting the flow.
I really love Tim's "pretty" voice at the start, we don't often get to hear that - especially totally alone. I do not know the original version, so, no, I don't hear harmonies there - even after listening to the entire song hundreds of times, just a lovely soft, almost wistful voice. It constantly amazes me that with 5 definitely different voices, it is quite often difficult to decide who is singing a particular line at any one point. There are times (there is one song in particular that changes nearly imperceptibly through at least 4 voices, but I can't remember which one it is right now) when you KNOW they are switching, but if you aren't really paying close attention, you miss it.
the very first song that i loved from Home Free! was looking for the original song and found this gem, and the rest is history. Home Free's version to me has more of the melancholy and reflection for me, which is really impressed me. and about the pitch correction issue, i disputed a lot of comments from another creator, a bit fiercely, because we know how they perform live, thus their music is never to "cheat" anyone. thank you for this, sir!

This is in my top 5 favorite Home Free videos, probably due to the way it features Tim's beautiful voice in the lead, and then adds featured parts for all the other guys to show their talents too. There is a funny video about a live performance of this song where Tim talks about having left his microphone in the break room during intermission. They were just heading back on stage when he had to run back down a flight of stairs, down a hallway, grab the mic, run back up the stairs, onto the stage, and begin singing: "How much of my mother..." Everyone was giving him worried looks. Austin thought he had gotten some bad news via a text during break and was trying to hold himself together. Tim said he just was gasping for oxygen. He'd overestimated his fitness level! Gail L.

This is definitely one of my favourite Home Free covers. The way you go through your analysis of various songs has helped me listen to songs that I love, and appreciate them even more.
Great reaction. Always informative, causing me to notice more of the details than I normally do. The changes in the background now reminds me of when they’ve done How Great Thou Art. I need to listen to that one again. 😊
This video is so well done! Of course their harmonies are spot on again! The fact that they’re singing in front of a diversion dam supports the lyrics… so our lives carry on the same direction or can we diverted to a new way of life!Nice reaction!!
My youngest daughter said much the same thing, the first time she heard it. She noticed that, right away. Once she mentioned it to me, I agreed, and I agree with you, as well! Nice touch! 😀
Yes! Adam does have a really pleasant voice. He doesn’t get a lead very often (his choice, he has said being he is the only member without proper vocal training), but he does sing a couple of lines in their cover of How Great Thou Art (very worthy of a reaction. It went viral). Also, Adam has a snippet part in their cover of “America” (which I believe is the same melody as “God Save the King” in the UK).
There's also "Helplessly Hoping, and several Christmas songs, plus "Home Free - Go Rest High On That Mountain (Acapella Cover) // The Church Sessions" (there's another version of it, but I like that one the best). I got to hear them sing it live, at the concert I attended in 2017. Adam sings beautifully in that one, as well as quite a few others. Here on YT, Sherry Hebebrand has a whole playlist of songs where "Adam Rupp Sings." It's a longer list than you might think. 😀
@@bethcoussou Oh, I know! I was just commenting about the actually quite-long list of HF songs in which Adam Rupp has sung. I wasn't thinking of reactions...just the list. Sorry about that.
Going to take (joking!) exception to Tim and Chance being called interchangeable, but thank you for this! This is my favorite of the Home Free covers, and getting to see it get some love AND get some knowledgeable breakdowns of what they're doing is wonderful.
Love this analysis! As someone who comes from a somewhat dysfunctional yet warm family this song feels both wary and hopeful. Being appreciative of the love received growing up versus wanting to do and be better, wondering if you'll end up like your family in the end or can strive to improve on what you've grown up into. Home Free translates this message beautifully, their style of singing suits this song very well. A bit folky and..hymnal sounding in a way? Upon initially hearing it, it sounds simple and earthy/gritty because of the folky campfire aesthetic of their sound. I love how you delved deeper in the layers of the arrangement, and on how beautiful and intricate they've cast together this sound! Thank you for that, I'll be listening more intently to this cover of theirs from now on!
The lyrics speak to me a lot because my mother was seriously mentally ill. I am constantly questioning what I have inherited from her. The second verse also speaks to me as I was in an emotionally abusive marriage for seventeen years. It's one of my favorite Home Free songs.
I really enjoyed your analysis of this, thank you. Small note: the starting verse being freestyle solo is a feature of trad folk, so I was pleasantly surprised by your pointing it out 😊 Another masterclass of "simple != boring" I think you'd love getting your teeth into is Brothers in Arms. The original truly earned its awards, with Knofler's guitar work expertly showing how space is as important as notes. HF turned it into capella and it's a lovely example of arranging to different mediums done really, really well.
Mind blowing! The song was already beautiful and very well sung by John Mayer, but Home Free has made it its own with the respect of the original. The great voices touches you so deeply. There's so much soul in that. But together with the beautiful voices of the others the amazing harmonies and the sound Adam makes, make it absolutely perfect. Simply but so great
These guys are really just so freaking talented. Im not a huge fan of the Mayer version. This version gets me everytime. The fact that 5 guys can make up a group of: 5 tenors, 2 basses, 5 beat boxers, 1 grand champion beat boxer, and more makes my head spin sometimes.
Actually, there are three basses and/or baritones, with Adam Rupp having the longest range, which he can use to sing, OR in his solo beatbox routines... Adam Rupp = B0 - G♯6 Tim Foust = B0 - A5 Adam Chance = F♯1 - F5 Also, Adam Rupp has said repeatedly, that he has NEVER been in a beatboxer contest, and does NOT have a "grand champion" rating for his beatboxing. He has no idea who started that rumor.
I am truly amazed by what they can and do do, or not! : ) Studio stuffs are exactly that -- and make it good as such, huh!!! BUT -- When they can and do do it LIVE and/or "off-mic" -- What do the nay-sayers, butt-hurt, jealous criers have to explain those happenings!?! (
Is it...? All of the above. 😀 Thank you, Sir, for your comment about the suggestions that appear so often, about "auto-tune," pitch correction, etc. I get SO tired of hearing all of that. Plus...I've heard Home Free sing live, and I can tell you that the harmonics are just as perfect when you hear them standing in front of you, with no instrumental music, and yet...because of how they blend their voices, you would think that maybe there was some. NOPE! I wish I had gotten to hear this one, live, but it came out about two months after my daughter, one of my grandsons, and I got to go to a concert. I would go and hear them live every single day of the week, if I could. They are just...WOW! This song, by the way is one of the entries in "my favorite genre." (grin) The "body percussion" is also the sound of a heartbeat, which is illustrated by Adam using his upper chest, over his heart, as the "drum." I always do that with him, when I sing along. The first time I heard them sing this, when the album was just published, I kept saying to Adam (from my chair here, in front of my computer), "OW! That must HURT!" Then I realized how he holds his hand, to create the sound of a beating heart, and that there just might be a mic under his shirt -- possibly even some sort of a lightweight soundboard. So he probably doesn't have to actually just pummel his chest "to death." When you were talking (12:40-ish) about Tim carrying the higher "oh-ohs," I stopped for a couple of minutes to see if you have reacted to Peter Hollens and Tim Foust singing "Greensleeves." You haven't, and I hope you will, sometime in the future. You will absolutely LOVE it, I'm sure. Both men do a great job, and Tim's range and flexibility (that, I think, will remind you of the "opening up" part you spoke of, here near the end) are EXTREMELY well-displayed. Great reaction. Thank you very much! 😀
Thank you for this. I would like to suggest that you react to "My Church" by Home Free. It is one of the best examples of how seamlessly Tim and Chance switch back and forth to cover the bass accompaniment.
Now you might like to watch two of their original songs "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget " and the Christmas quasi followup "Full of Cheer". Both written by Tim Foust.
Making this song show offy would not be the best for this song. It's simple, it's clear and emotional. If you are interested in hearing one of their really complicated arrangements check out Fishin' in the Dark / Boondocks
Such a beautiful song about the Blood, the Blood of Our Savior Jesus Christ. About all the healing, joy in His Blood. To His believers His Blood is continually cleansing us from all our sinful selves.
Something folksy from HomeFree might be "Everybody Walking This Land". For a switch back to something light "Working for a Living" is a good cover of Huey Lewis and The News, plus a fun video. (Esp if you know the Anchorman movie)
I think I may have to add this to my calming down list. And I don’t care if it’s auto-tuned or not - - Pentatonix/Voice Play - all autotuned and I don’t even know that I care if it sounds better. Better than John Mayer’s. Now maybe Jim Croce for my next Patreon request along with my other Patreon Jim Croce lover.❤ I’ll do it for you - give me a song idea from him. Thanks Sir - you were nice as well as the song.
I don’t know if this is a lesser-acclaimed Home Free rendition or maybe an overlooked gem. But it continues to grow on me the more that I hear it. As far as being strict with reactions, I’ve read that HF’s former label has been very heavy with blocks and such. But, that the group itself is not in favor of such strictness and founded their own label to better control their own content.
Hi! I can't wait to see your reaction to Brothers Is Arms, Man Of Constans Sorrow and Ring Of Fire (Avi Kaplan's version). I hope these Home Free songs are on your list too! Greetings: Andrea🙃
Here's a beautiful video from the 2024 class of A Cappella Academy (the annual 10-day intensive vocal music camp for kids 12 to 18 from around the world, founded in 2014 by Avi Kaplan, Ben Bram (PTX's longtime producer/arranger) and Rob Dietz (composer/arranger).) The kids are broken into groups based on preferred genre. This group, Apricity, does an amazing job with Aurora's "A Different Kind of Human" and "The Secret Garden". Keep in mind as you listen that they're all under 18 and had only met each other 10 days prior. ruclips.net/video/jfun2EMMTaU/видео.html
I have seen them live 5 times and in my opinion they are better live if that is possible. They make their performances an experience and fun...no auto tune in the concerts and they are just fraky good.
Agreed. Plus, after they started using the looper for songs like Ed Sheeran's "Castle On the Hill," they put the constantly-repeated initial tenor rhythmical phrase into the looper system before they start singing the song itself, then they all sing, with it playing in the background, and you can't hear any dissonance in the entire song. It's just gorgeous!
This seems to be a environment v. genetics. How much of our DNA dictates who/what we are vs. where and how we are raised? We are able to chose which direction we go - it's called free will.
I do really love John Mayer, but I feel as though Home Free do a better job of delivering and communicating the lyrics here. I FEEL them in a deeper way, and I think you explained it to me in that first verse with Tim. Thanks!!
Yet another stellar in-depth reaction! You’re getting this country music. Next thing we’ll know, you’ll be having biscuits (not scones) and sausage gravy for breakfast and grits and greens with your supper (not dinner) …. Having retired from the music industry after years of teaching music from GRADE school to GRAD school, you’re truly sharing your gift through youtube.
My apologies to John Mayer . . but I like Home Free's cover more. The song's debate of nature vs. nurture is thought-provoking and their rendition of it adds weight to that. Insofar as the people who comment about autotune, etc. - they need to watch the compilation of short, live videos "Mix - 10 Short Videos with a fun in the shower ending" or "My Church Live": ruclips.net/video/4Tpa5D1UMrc/видео.htmlsi=Bsdq83QETxtytQLJ . Thanks for playing this & your insights.
I keep forgetting to say that I really wish you would do "Playing With Fire" - all of the reactors who actually analyze keep getting sidetracked by the video and quit listening to the music.
Don’t get me wrong because I’m not a music professional (probably couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket), and I do enjoy Chance’s voice, but in comparison to the leisurely pace of Tim’s first verse it seems like Chance is kind of hurrying through his verse. I’ve never listened to the original song, so I was wondering if Chance’s verse has been influenced by the original, or was this a conscious decision to go that speed, or an I just hearing things?

Those two songs have some of the absolute best 5 part harmonies I have ever heard.
@@GrandmasGotGraceLW I believe he already reviewed and reacted to HH!
@@bethcoussou Oh, I know! I was just commenting about the actually quite-long list of HF songs in which Adam Rupp has sung. I wasn't thinking of reactions...just the list. Sorry about that.
One of my favourite HF covers. The original never really resonated with me but this one touches my soul
Well done as always! Love the way you break it down. This one is a hard one for me to listen to.
Yes SH, it is very nice!❤RA🎼
Just so lovely! It makes you think too.
Going to take (joking!) exception to Tim and Chance being called interchangeable, but thank you for this! This is my favorite of the Home Free covers, and getting to see it get some love AND get some knowledgeable breakdowns of what they're doing is wonderful.
I like this Home Free version so much…..perhaps in my top 3?
Thank you, Laurie! This is my first time hearing this song and I really enjoyed it. As always, thank you Sir H. for your wonderful insight.
Home Free just released I Still Believe In You
Yes, and it's wonderful!
This is a beautiful discovery. Thank you for your analysis Sir ! 😃
Mr. Rupp is a very talented man. The entire group is magic! Loved this reaction/analysis!
So nice.🙂 Lyrics get to me in some of this..I suppose that's the point. As we all have our own 'life's journey'. Thank you for your time!
Thanks for reacting to a great song 😊
The lyrics speak to me a lot because my mother was seriously mentally ill. I am constantly questioning what I have inherited from her. The second verse also speaks to me as I was in an emotionally abusive marriage for seventeen years. It's one of my favorite Home Free songs.
I really enjoyed your analysis of this, thank you. Small note: the starting verse being freestyle solo is a feature of trad folk, so I was pleasantly surprised by your pointing it out 😊
Another masterclass of "simple != boring" I think you'd love getting your teeth into is Brothers in Arms.
Adam Rupp = B0 - G♯6
Tim Foust = B0 - A5
Adam Chance = F♯1 - F5
Also, Adam Rupp has said repeatedly, that he has NEVER been in a beatboxer contest, and does NOT have a "grand champion" rating for his beatboxing.
This song, by the way is one of the entries in "my favorite genre." (grin)
The "body percussion" is also the sound of a heartbeat, which is illustrated by Adam using his upper chest, over his heart, as the "drum." I always do that with him, when I sing along. So he probably doesn't have to actually just pummel his chest "to death."
When you were talking (12:40-ish) about Tim carrying the higher "oh-ohs," I stopped for a couple of minutes to see if you have reacted to Peter Hollens and Tim Foust singing "Greensleeves." You haven't, and I hope you will, sometime in the future. You will absolutely LOVE it, I'm sure. Both men do a great job, and Tim's range and flexibility (that, I think, will remind you of the "opening up" part you spoke of, here near the end) are EXTREMELY well-displayed.
Great reaction. Thank you very much! 😀
Thanks for the comment! I was also wondering about the chest-pummelling 😅
I've not yet done Greensleeves, but it's on my list 👀
@@SirHairless I'm now on tenterhooks! 😀
Thank you for this. I would like to suggest that you react to "My Church" by Home Free. It is one of the best examples of how seamlessly Tim and Chance switch back and forth to cover the bass accompaniment.
NICE! I sure appreciate your insight! Thank you for another informative and interesting reaction! I love what you do.
Now you might like to watch two of their original songs "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget " and the Christmas quasi followup "Full of Cheer". Both written by Tim Foust.
I believe Sir Hairless has already reacted to "Champagne Taste (On A Beer Budget) 🤠
Their studio work is multi-track. I'm confident the bass is all Tim.
Very nice 😊
Thanks! Have you done any Ren?
I've not done any Ren yet, have never heard Ren perform before
@@SirHairless Try Hi Ren...it is the gateway to the world of Ren
Making this song show offy would not be the best for this song. It's simple, it's clear and emotional.
If you are interested in hearing one of their really complicated arrangements check out Fishin' in the Dark / Boondocks
YES! PLEASE! 😀
One of my longtime favorites. I especially like the building harmonies towards the end. Thanks for the great and informative reaction.
This is so very beautiful! The harmonies and beat boxing are unpeckable. Love your reaction!
They were tight and fabulous as always when I saw them last week.
💜
So great. Really enjoyed this. Greetings from South Africa
❤️❤️
"Go rest high on that mountain"...

They are! One of these will be my next Home Free reaction 👀
Love the Mayday artwork!! Made me laugh 😂 but excellent representation of the movement… 👍
Know any art dealers interested in my work?
I do really love John Mayer, but I feel as though Home Free do a better job of delivering and communicating the lyrics here. I FEEL them in a deeper way, and I think you explained it to me in that first verse with Tim. Thanks!!
If it is auto tuned why do they sound this great live in concert
Yet another stellar in-depth reaction! You’re getting this country music. Next thing we’ll know, you’ll be having biscuits (not scones) and sausage gravy for breakfast and grits and greens with your supper (not dinner) …. Having retired from the music industry after years of teaching music from GRADE school to GRAD school, you’re truly sharing your gift through youtube.
Thank you!
Please react to HF's cover of *Brothers In Arms.* In my opinion, their BEST, well, maybe second best, cover.
This won a recent poll and should be my next HF reaction
@@SirHairless NICE! I think you'll really enjoy it. A little heavy, but, fantastic.
Never liked the original. This one is much better.
Tim's first verse is able to be much more free in terms of tempo due to there being no other parts 🎵
Well guys looks like we lost another great reactor to the acapella bands around 😮😅 it's alright just have to wait it out and see it shouldn't be more than a few months 😂😆
Halloween and Christmas coming up
@@SirHairless yes they are that's what I said that it shouldn't be more than a few months LMAO 🤣 😂 every reaction channel goes through this phase why not yours ?
I could not enjoy the song to much talking.
Sorry to hear that! This is an analysis as it says in the title. I also gave you a timestamp to skip ahead to to avoid the talking 😉
If you want to enjoy the song without interruptions, I've linked Home Free's video in my description 🎶 Have a great day!
This is one of my very favorites by them! So excited for this react!
