- In June 1943, sailors attacked Mexican American youths. Throughout Los Angeles, those wearing zoot suits were beaten and stripped of their clothes. It became known as the Zoot Suit Riots.
Every year hundreds of cars cruise through L.A. to commemorate what happened.

My parents, uncles and aunts lived it, R.I.P.
So did mine, but in all the photo's of them, none of them wore their fedora's with the brim turned up in the front--that's a modern, cultural maladaptation. They always rocked their lids with the brim worn low over their eyes. There were men who wore their hats turned up in the front, but they were white hayseeds.

What a day that must've been to highlight a moment in our nation's history. Events like these are memorable, but also demonstrates the level of resolve that's exhibited by the great-grandchildren and grand-children of the Chicanos who dealt with the blatant and flagrant assault on Chicano heritage and pride. 99% of Americans back then didn't need to learn because they were already giving up so much to the war effort. Only cholos and ghetto hoodrats were hoarding valuable fabric to make some stupid style of clothing.I agree with you that there was a great story in those navy sailors beating on those anti american zoot wearing hoods.

The zoot suit consisted of a broad-shouldered drape jacket, balloon-leg trousers, and, sometimes, a flamboyant hat. Mexican and Mexican American youths who wore these outfits were called zoot-suiters. These individuals referred to themselves as pachucos, a name linked to the Mexican American generation’s rebellion against both the Mexican and American cultures. Pressures related to U.S. involvement in World War II contributed to the racial tensions that preceded the riots. Workers were needed in the agricultural and service sectors of the United States to fill the jobs vacated by those who were serving in the military. An agreement was reached with Mexico whereby temporary workers from Mexico were brought into the United States. This influx of Mexican workers was not particularly welcomed by white Americans.
As part of the war effort, by March 1942 the United States had begun rationing various resources. Restrictions on wool had a direct effect on the manufacture of wool suits and other clothing. There were regulations prohibiting the manufacturing of zoot suits, but a network of bootleg tailors continued to manufacture them. This exacerbated racial tensions, as Mexican American youths wearing the zoot suits were seen as un-American because they were deliberately ignoring the rationing regulations.
The riots began on June 3, 1943, after a group of sailors stated that they had been attacked by a group of Mexican American zoot-suiters. As a result, on June 4 a number of uniformed sailors chartered cabs and proceeded to the Mexican American community, seeking out the zoot-suiters. What occurred that evening and in the following days was a series of conflicts primarily between servicemen and zoot-suiters. Many zoot-suiters were beaten by servicemen and stripped of their zoot suits on the spot. The servicemen sometimes urinated on the zoot suits or burned them in the streets. One local paper printed an article describing how to “de-zoot” a zoot-suiter, including directions that the zoot suits should be burned. The servicemen were also portrayed in local news publications as heroes fighting against what was referred to as a Mexican crime wave. The worst of the rioting occurred on the night of June 7, when thousands of servicemen and citizens prowled the streets of downtown Los Angeles, attacking zoot-suiters as well as members of minority groups who were not wearing zoot suits.
So it was in the pressures of Germany establishing during World War II, a strong relationship in Mexico where a fifth column was possibly had developed there and here? I’m just asking so that way people can read it to research on it because you can take history revisionism today and erase the rest of the history that was before. It might take some footwork like microfiche research. The tensions weren’t just about racism or something like that. And where do other Latin American ethnicities fall into this?
Im from New Mexico and we were always told growing up that the Zoot Suit originated in El Paso Texas and that’s the reason EL Paso is referred to as Chuco Town and many ppl say no it started in Califas but when you google why is El Paso referred to as Chico Town and it says because the Zoot suit originated there would like to hear your input respectfully from South East New Mexico 575 👊🏽✊🏽

Cab Calloway designed the Zoot Suit and wore it on stage while he performed. He was a Jazz artist and he was African American.
PROBLEM! Why didn't this story mention Zoot Suit was started in black community and Latino community pick up the zoot suit mantel and use zoot suit for political statement/culture style. We have to tell full story to white and Asian people not half the story.

as I was taught from my parents who were from the state of Texas, El Paso (my mother) & San Antonio (my father) the pachuco's/ zoot suiter's originated in El Paso TX.

Goes to show you how much in common us blacks and browns have. Whether it be music specifically oldies music and style of dress(zoot suits) African American culture has definitely influenced the Chicano culture. This is why today we need to unite and combine our forces, resources, and intellect for a better future together. For as long as anyone can remember blacks and browns have shared neighborhoods, schools etc. The race tensions between blacks and browns therefore make zero sense. I'm a proud father of two Blaxicans and I'll make sure they're proud of both of their roots. ✊🏿✊🏼

From a studied W.W. 2 Historian's education and point of view, I must say that this part of history is definitely a big stain on the U.S Military at that time. I grew up in Glendale and have always appreciated the Mexican Culture. Having been a Hot-Rod builder and enthusiast then, I also appreciate(d) the style that was put into the cars of Their Culture as well. I am happy that I wasn't alive back then and I WAS NOT a part of the shameful atrocity that arose those five days and nights back in June of 1943.
I like the style way better than white Tshirts and sagging pants!

I remember my dad telling me about what happen there in San Diego. My dad served in the Navy, and we believe that the Chicano's were only being themselves and just trying to enjoy living in Southern California, but the whites didn't like it. I am a Chicano and I also served 20 years in the USAF but still sometimes they give me a hard time, but you know what I say to them you can never break my spirit. La Raza forever. I AM CHICANO FOREVER!

Then you should know why real Americans weren't wearing these zoot suites because there was a WORLD WAR going on and every material was needed for soldiers overseas and not for ghetto hoodrats back home trying to make a statement. The hairstyles and cuts of clothing do represent the time period. I have pictures of my aunts in the 40s with these hairstyles in Europe. Very interesting, I’ll have to read more about it

What happened in 1942 & 1943 to our fellow Chicanos during the Zoot Suit Riots was nothing more another disgraceful display of our country's ugly history of racism and prejudice towards our fellow Americans by a group of savages, barbarians, and criminals who were nothing more than a disservice to our country's armed forces at the height of WWII. The Zoot Suit riot history shouldn't ignored/forgotten. I am glad that this piece was featured in the LA Times. I love the Latinas showing the hair-styles of that era in this piece. Looks super-classy, elegant, and super-firme! Keep up the great representing your grandparents and great- grandparents and standing up for their struggles and sacrifices to help us all get to where we are today. For all of California's problems, California is still much of the envy of the rest of the country and around the world. Never sell out your rich tradition, culture, and heritage. Also, let us not forget Jose Gallaro Diaz, Enrique Leyvas, and all the other victims during this period of injustice and we hope God Almighty has provided their families and descendants relief over the decades. I find it appalling that too many Mexicans and other Latino-Americans of a "unfavorable" look or background that while hatred (call it bigotry, racist, etc) still exists towards them, they still ignore the easy ways they can give themselves more respect and even feared, not a physical fear but a fear to be left alone or even supported. It starts in POP CULTURE. It starts with Mexican/Etc-Americans, in music, TV and movies. It is very easy to help yourselves out. You can be a doctor, technician, actor, etc., but that will only give you such respect in Your social circles not elsewhere. START supporting Selena Gomez and her projects no matter what, listen to older stuff by Linda Ronstadt and Carlos Santana, watch TV shows and movies with such Latinos in them. When or if these names become big, the racist masses, who come from ALL races, will come to an understanding that you are bonding, that you are unified in this goal, a goal to be given respect. You think Michael Pena is a big star? My friends, NO, he is of obvious Mexican background (his looks) and for that he is no Iron Man, Super Man, Batman nor even Robin. The same goes for female actresses. Selena Gomez Should have had many huge top ten hits and a handful of Big number one hits but didn't, and the hate towards her is obvious in pop culture: because she is Mexican (it IS what they see). Look into why Rita Hayworth, Richie Valens, Anthony Pettis, Bruno Mars changed their names for the stage, why Allison Iraheta didn't have any success after having been heavily promoted with such catchy music, why Anthony Quinn decided to use his Irish/White name and not his Spanish name...

I remember learning about this in my Chicano class I can't remember if it was in a textbook or article but I had to write down what happened it took me such a long time but it was very informative and those suites were pretty dope I would definitely wear one tbh I completely forgotten about thank you for reminding love the cars and the women hair wow takes me back
I grew up in Boyle Heights of the 50's. Before the term of Chicanos, there were Pachucos. The Zoot Suits were gone but the Pachucos still had their own look. Slick back hair, skin tight white T-shirts, wide bell bottom pants (before flares became popular), spit shined pointy toe shoes and a folded Pendelton shirt over one arm. They also had their own style of walking.

Its very interesting how LA Times glorifies Zoot Suits today, and makes them the victims. In the early 1940s, the United States government mandated a ration for the War effort. The categories of rationed foods during the War were sugar, coffee, processed foods (canned, frozen, etc.), meats and canned fish, and cheese, canned milk, and fats. Furthermore, shortly after Pearl Harbor, there was a heavy burden on US supplies of basic materials like metal, rubber, paper, shoes, and ESPECIALLY garments . Minimal used clothing was mandatory throughout the United States, but some Mexicans decided to defy the rules set forth, wear excessive clothing , and because they didn't enlist in the Services, it pissed Americans off ! Today we look at these people as some sort of Heroes . The men that fought in the War were the TRUE HEROES !

Zoot suiters was a style that different races wore. Started as a African American style then everyone (all races) started to dress that way with their own little twist. Do your own research, especially about the riots. Very interesting. Chicano pride!

What is wrong with America!? Beaten because of clothes?
The poor cannon-fodder went through culture-shock seeing Chicanos wearing zoot-suits which were a sign of being a "baller" as they are called today. This was pure jealousy by the poor servicemen who didn't expect to see Chicanos with better clothes, cars, women and lifestyles than they were accustomed to... all while being prepared to be shipped of to a sacrificial meat-grinder overseas... truth.
Maybe, but some like my grandpa chose to serve their country during WWII and when he returned, moved his family away from the barrio and silly cholo mindset.
You’re leaving out a large part of why this happened which is typically done in these situations so someone can be the victim. Back then we expect people who come here to abandoned their previous country’s culture and language then adopt ours, if they don’t like it, pack up and move back to a country who’s culture you do agree with. And Mexicans are late arrivals to our country and didn’t sacrifice what we have in its formation.

Yes, Mestizos. Today, immigrants have heeded Bidens call and 3.5 million of them are now dug in the US. There's big worries of gangs like MS-13 and criminals ranging from petty theft to rapists to murders amongst them. People are already being raped and murdered in the US by illegals. I am so happy and proud as a Latina to see the Pachuco culture not only alive and well, but growing and thriving!
