  • Steve Gregg delves into the symbolism of Babylon in Revelation 17-18. He notes that while some interpret the harlot in these chapters as the Roman Catholic Church or a coalition of apostate faiths, it is equally likely that the term refers to Jerusalem as a great city and a harlot who cheated on Yahweh. Gregg draws connections to Jeremiah 2:20 and Ezekiel 16:23 to support this interpretation. He also explores the difficult passage in verses 7-11 and cautions against relying too heavily on futurist interpretations that have yet to come to fruition.

@@SteveGreggVideos I got that from Bible prophecy. The Lord Jesus Christ shall first punish all the nations of the world for attacking Israel. "Thou shalt not kill" (6th Commandment). The nations of the world (especially the USA) are desperately trying to destroy Israel in order to prevent the fulfillment of Bible prophecy. But they shall fail. "And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem" (Zechariah 12:9, KJV). At the end of the Tribulation, the Lord Jesus Christ shall judge the nations. Part of the criteria for that judgment is how they treat His 144,000 Jewish evangelists and their converts. "And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40, KJV). Anybody who hates the Jews shall be thrown into Hell (Matthew 25:46, KJV).
The Millennial Kingdom shall begin after the Tribulation. Israel shall rule the world. "And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob: and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem" (Isaiah 2:3, KJV). The people who survive the Tribulation shall be required to make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem one a year. "And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which come against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles" (Zechariah 14:16, KJV).
Absolutely none of that has happened yet; that proves we're not in the Millennium yet. But God the Father promises that it shall happen.

History repeats and people are the same across time so we can symbolically apply this lesson to any time and situation. In historic context of the original time and place for which Rev was written, it is obvious to me, since the entire OT and NT is about a particular people whom God divorced for playing the whore, that the Whore of Babylon is a reference to the Babylonian Talmud.

I'd say Revelation indicates patterns, as well. And I also wondered about the *Babylonian* Talmud. However I think that 'whore of Babylon' is broader than rabbinical Judaism. It includes the church as well. That's why cringe when star trek theologians argue with 'Christ coming to fetch his bride first' ("rapture"). Apparently they are misreading the terms there, to make their theory fly. And actually argue against scripture.

We are listening to these with great interest. My biggest question is regarding the possibility of repeating fulfillments. As that happened in numerous "types" and previous events. examples. Christ our King, becomes or rather has a corporate body the saints and redeemed. Judas as a "type", became a body of of "many" "antichrists". Israel a man, became a nation, and in the New Testament is "ALL Israel" which is both non-Jew and Jew "in Christ" Eph. 2.
Jerusalem a corrupt, Christ rejecting city here has a counter "Jerusalem from above", A Jew whose circumcision of the flesh has a counterpart being "a Jew whose circumcision of the heart" and is not limited to Hebrew DNA. There are many more.. So I ask if the judgement that fell on the Jews 66-70AD was fulfilled upon the flesh-born kingdom of Jews, what of the Great World of Christianity with all manner of apostasy? Is there solid evidence of a secondary fulfillment of Daniel 9/ Rev. 17-18 upon the spiritual kingdom of apostate Christianity? (I have pondered these for 40 years and appreciate Steven's presentation, we are close in age.

I have pondered this, too, and although I definitely think there is a judgment (decision) when Christ comes again, the Bible is clear that "to whom much is given, much is required". The Gentile nations of the world (pigs, swine to Jews) were not the chosen and groomed nation to bring forth the Messiah and given the oracles of God. The wedding invitation was not even offered to Gentile nations until the chosen, elect nation of Israel rejected the marriage invitation and killed Messiah. God is not mad at the Gentiles but those who knew better and are without excuse, which is why He poured out His wrath on them in 70 AD. This is why I think God poured out "the day of His wrath" in 70AD (God is appeased) and don't believe in the dispensational teaching of a coming holocaust tribulation/wrath in the future. He died for the sins of the whole world and wants to save all His creation.

@@marthabautze6650 when we grasp that the JU-deans rejected and crucified the beloved son of God, we understand better the reason for the wrath. What they did to Jesus was an abomination of demonic torture, the demonized crowd screaming "CRUCIFY HIM!!".
But GOD still gave them around 3 years of grace to repent, in answer to Jesus praying "FORGIVE THE FATHER FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO!" .. Thus we see what followed when Peter (with the keys to the kingdom) preached in Acts 2 after he was Spirit filled. "THIS JESUS WHOM YOU CRUCIFIED GOD HAS MADE BOTH LORD AND CHRIIST" Acts 2:36 .. 3,000 repented. \o/
Peter preached it again in ACTS 3, 4, and 5. The JU-daens rejected and began to persecute the disciples even to death.
THEN God began to turn to gentiles and PETER was summoned to preach Jesus to them in ACTS 10.
There began the transition from a Jewish church to be "ALL ISREL", the body of Christ of BOTH Jew and non-Jew.

At 33:00 minutes......Steve speaks of the blood of the righteous shed at the hands of Babylon (Rev 17:6; 18:24) and then cross references Matt 23:34-36 to support that Babylon the Whore in Rev 17 is Jerusalem. But, the indictment on the Pharisees in Matt 23:34-36 was for all the righteous blood "from Abel to Zachariah", whereas Rev 17:6 and 18:24 also expands to include "the blood of saints, martyrs of Jesus and all that were slain upon the earth".
I do agree Jerusalem, at the writing of Revelation was pagan Babylon the Harlot (Sodom and Egypt) b/c occult Babylon infiltrated the Judaic priesthood during the Babylonian captivity and returned as temple scribes and Pharisees from Babylonian captivity. But Rev 17 indicates a much bigger Babylonian Harlot in Rev 18.. a future (John is taken into the wilderness to see her in Rev 17:3.....?), manifested as the Holy Roman Empire papacy beast that follows the Roman Empire (both are the 4th beast of Daniel, in different manifestations).
Therefore, because the beast in Rev 17:8 "goes into perdition", I wonder if Rev 17 is NOT exclusive to Jerusalem, destroyed in 70 AD, but lives on until it is destroyed by the 2nd Coming of Christ?? Or could there be 2 fulfillments or Rev 17? (the Jerusalem destruction being a paradigm of the RCC destruction?) The Rev 18 Babylon Harlot is not judged until just before the "wife has made herself ready" in Rev 19. In the Bible there are 3 harvests. Barley, Wheat and Grapes.

    Revelation 17-18
    English Standard Version
The Great Prostitute and the Beast
17 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” 3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that was full of blasphemous names, and it had seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. 5 And on her forehead was written a name of mystery: “Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.” 6 And I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints, the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.[a]
When I saw her, I marveled greatly. 7 But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her. 8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and is about to rise from the bottomless pit[b] and go to destruction. And the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come. 9 This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; 10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. 12 And the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings for one hour, together with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast. 14 They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.”
15 And the angel[c] said to me, “The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. 16 And the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast will hate the prostitute. They will make her desolate and naked, and devour her flesh and burn her up with fire, 17 for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman that you saw is the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.”
    The Fall of Babylon
18 After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. 2 And he called out with a mighty voice,
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
She has become a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt for every unclean spirit,
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
3 For all nations have drunk[d]
the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”
4 Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,
“Come out of her, my people,
lest you take part in her sins,
    lest you share in her plagues;
5 for her sins are heaped high as heaven,
and God has remembered her iniquities.
6 Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
    and repay her double for her deeds;
mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed.
7 As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
    ‘I sit as a queen,
    I am no widow,
and mourning I shall never see.’
8 For this reason her plagues will come in a single day,
    death and mourning and famine,
    and she will be burned up with fire;
for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”
9 And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,
    “Alas! Alas! You great city,
    you mighty city, Babylon!
For in a single hour your judgment has come.”
11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[e]
14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
    has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
    are lost to you,
    never to be found again!”
15 The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,
16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
that was clothed in fine linen,
    in purple and scarlet,
    adorned with gold,
    with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.”
And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning,
“What city was like the great city?”
19 And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,
“Alas, alas, for the great city
where all who had ships at sea
    grew rich by her wealth!
For in a single hour she has been laid waste.
20 Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and apostles and prophets,
for God has given judgment for you against her!”
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,
“So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence,
    and will be found no more;
22 and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters,
will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft
will be found in you no more,
and the sound of the mill
will be heard in you no more,
23 and the light of a lamp
will shine in you no more,
and the voice of bridegroom and bride
will be heard in you no more,
for your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
and of all who have been slain on earth.”
