I had a great question from one of you, asking about whether the Chanel Jumbo was worth it because you were worried about it either adding years to you or looking cheap/tacky if you try and dress it down. I do find it once of my hardest bags to style because I agree that it can look mature imo. So I thought I’d share some thoughts and tips that might help you decide whether you want to get the bag or not. Ad*

The Chanel two tone shoes, though called the granny shoes, are still one of my favourite, classic shoes ever :)
I actually loved the mature looks so much! I don’t consider them older or anything negative! First off they look classy, they’re very pretty and elegant. I also feel that if you buy classic like a jumbo that’s expensive and constantly try to make it look younger and too casual, it can almost become tacky. I personally prefer the mature looks with flats and coats versus sneakers and worn like a clutch! Love your videos!💕

Eleanor Grant When you're young you can dress in potentially frumpy clothes and look gorgeous. I used to wear old ladyish clothes and they looked kind of ironic and fun. Before you know it you really are older and believe me it's no longer a fun look. 😉

If I was paying that much for a bag, I wouldn’t expect to have to work hard to style it! I’d expect the bag to do the heavy lifting for me (metaphorically). Wouldn’t it be better to just buy a different bag?
And this is one of the reasons I no longer buy Chanel. Too much hoop jumping for an overpriced bag that is TRENDY right now. I swear 85% of the people who buy it only do so because “everyone else” is and don’t have any sense of self haha. You hit the nail on the head!

Tbh I will never get that 2010 look out of my head. That's all I see when I look at any classic flap. I've seen too many fakes and now the lambskin just looks like vinyl to me :(
I may be an outlier, but I LOVE the “mature” look! I don’t feel it is “older” so much as “formal” 💖
larger bags are back and this bag is iconic, can't look bad with anything you wear.
I love the granny looks! In real life people often mistake me for my 10 yr old sons sister so I think it just depends who you are. If I dress in my casual ripped jeans and converse I am immediately looked at as a "teenage" mother or something so for some of us the mature looks work (and is needed!) especially when doing the school run LOL
I assume that the majority of women who can afford Chanel bag are 30-40+ and most of them don't want to look older than they really are.

Before I owned a black Jumbo, I used to think it looked mature for ladies. But when I tried it on at the boutique wearing a maxi dress, I was swooned! My husband thought no bag in the world made the pairing looked perfect yet effortless. So, I got the bag with GHW in an instant and have been wearing it with dresses or simple preppy outfits. I can never carry the small or medium for its shorter strap for my height and built.
You’re right about the trying to hard. I’ll never carry Hermes and wear rockstuds, I just use one luxury thing at a time. It amps up the class to do it that way.

I love mature outfits! Pearls, brooches, tweed jackets, cap toe pumps, I love it all. Your second moodboard for the jumbo is literally my shopping bag on Zalando that I have yet to check out 😂 I want to buy a new bag for my upcoming birthday and I’ve seen some crossbody Aspinal of London and Coach bags that I like but I just KNOW I’ll never use them if I can’t even fit a water bottle, wallet and small cosmetics pouch in it 😩
Imo, this is over thinking...ANY chanel bag looks good, jumbo, medium, WOC, own your look and move on. Make sure your clothes are tailored impeccably tweed jacket or otherwise and the look with the bag will be over the moon. I totally disagree - your neck looks amazing in the round collar jacket. And you look taller and leaner .
Personally, I'd go for a smaller version, it seems more manageable and more practical... Anyway, would you consider doing a video on scarfs? I've been saving up for some quality lux silk scarf (I have my eyes on Hermès ones) and would be grateful for any recommendations - size/material/wearability/designer/durability... I have this bag and I love it. The medium flap is way too small and the jumbo fits a good amount of stuff. I don’t really think about how I wear it and what outfits I wear it with, because I love it and will want to use it with any outfit. I paid a ton of money for this bag so I’m gonna get the wear out of it regardless of how I look!

As I am definitely of mature age now the jumbo suits me down to the ground. I find it goes with so much and can be easily dressed up or down. The problem with the smaller sizes is that they hold very little and I have found that the older I get the bigger the list of essentials gets, so my small bags have all had to go over the past 10 years or so. The beauty with the jumbo is that you may have to think carefully about styling it when you are young but it's a bag that will still look great when you are 80, so it really is a bag for life, not just right now.
Some good advice and I feel that if a woman has warm colouring that she suits gold-coloured hardware and if a woman has cool colouring that she suits silver-coloured hardware.

Now that I don't work and I don't have small kids to attend meetings or meet teachers, I find myself dressing more casual. So, I too am having a hard time finding bags that would go with my everyday outfits. The highlight of my week is usually food shopping. So, I have been handing things down to my daughter from when I used to work. But she thinks they are too fancy for her and she has to explain that they were handdowns to her co-workers, so my things makes her uncomfortable in work setting. She just started working this year. I guess when I die they will just throw my stuff out.

I think just going into the workplace I agree with her that it could give off the ‘princess’ vibe, that she’s from money and hasn’t worked herself to get that position. Not that’s reality, just you don’t want to give off that image as a young person

I’m 5ft and I own the Chanel Jumbo in patent, I wore it for my 50th with a white beautiful Spring cotton dress. I later looked at pictures and I think it looked overwhelming for my size. I never used it again. Since then I purchased the medium, mini, and several wallets & love the look much more.

I have this bag and use it with a casual or business casual look! I don't go to the extent of overthinking my outfit! When I spend that much money on a handbag, and I have quite a few, I want to be able to wear it with ANYTHING with the exception of an evening look!!

Hey Sophie! I'm so glad you mentioned the point of making the bag look like it isn't your own, more like something that has been handed down because the bag is quite "serious" looking. In my humble opinion, this thought process can be applied to any other truly classic bag, for example, the Hermes Kelly and Birkin, the Lady Dior but also the LV Capucines, all in black leather with either gold or silver hardware. I think that the "seriousness" can be mitigated if these "serious" bags were done in a color other than black or nude. By the way, I love your videos, you're so genuine, insightful and personable!
I’d wear the jumbo with anything except an evening look. Seems like an everyday bag to me. But I am not a teenager so not looking for a young look Round neck jackets make me think of the older Royals😄 tChanel has raised their prices so much that with a little more money could buy Hermès instead of a jumbo.

That’s some very strong opinions u have towards the rock studs w the classics flap. I say as long as the person wearing it is happy in it than go for it. I would recommend to the person asking this question, if you get a colored classic flap if instantly makes if youthful. Also if u already don’t dressed “older” than wearing it w ur current wardrobe won’t look like it. I live in LA and tons of people have it. You can wear it edgy clothing or street wear and it looks very good! Good luck on deciding.

Hello Sophie ! I think that before buying a luxury bag , I would go through my entire wardrobe . I mean if you prefer pastel colours , a Chanel in black would create too much contrast and if you enjoy beige-y nuances , well with a Chanel in nude the overall look would be a little bit dull. The Chanel classic flap ( no matter in which size ) is elegant in a very minimalist way . I would rather choose it in dark green or blue or grey to style it better ( dress up or down) with my own wardrobe . I am one of those persons who dont' like black and beige . I like your tips . You have a beautiful collection of Chanel and Dior bags in differnet colours and I would enjoy to see how you style them . Greetings from Paris !

I see it as classy and mature. Try going to any luxury resort and see the difference in how you are treated. Yes I also use it jeans and ballet flats when I fly. Agree with you about round neck jackets however if you have a short neck the alternative jacket makes your neck disappear. Thanks for the break. Back to the hospital I go.
wow. This was a really helpful video. I own a jumbo (with gold chain...) and have been thinking about this problem especially since nowadays small bags are more in. Sophie, well done on this video, as always. First of all, I'm a mature lady, and I lovvvvvved the mature outfit you put together! Classic! I also loved the more youthful outfits, especially with the jeans. Great info for anyone thinking of getting the bag or who already owns it. You really can never go wrong with black trousers, ever, I think. They give you so many options. One of my go- tos is a black pencil skirt, a wardrobe basic for me with my job.

I am 36 so I don’t want to look older but I also don’t want to pretend I am 18 either. Work- style clothes seemed aging but too casual is too far. The outfit with the coat and sneakers nailed it for me. Overall your suggestions were so polished and youthful and it really put me in the right frame of mind. The video I didn’t realise I needed honestly!

In my opinion the larger Chanel classic flap bags are an ‘old lady’ bag and I think the reason is that, once upon a time, you had to be a lady of a certain age to be able to afford it. This only began to change around ten years ago. These days many people wear luxe items as everyday items. It’s as if luxe is the new normal. I personally loved all your older style outfits but probably because I am older, haha. Same with a string of pearls - they are expensive so again, usually bought by the older generation, but they also reflect light back onto the face which is very flattering as you age. You did well with the more youthful outfits, very nice.

I always found that the jumbo always gives me airport style vibes (not that I own one) but I think because of the size of it in my opinion I think looks better with more casual/loungewear outfits, Whereas the small/medium look better with smarter looks but still looks good with casual vibes as well X

I'm not sure why I'm interested in this. A Channel bag is definitely an item I will never have to worry about styling, not just because I can't afford it, but my taste is much more casual. However I liked seeing how much you changed the vibe of that one one item with different outfits.
Hello Sophie, You might call me a "lurker" because I have followed you for a very long time but hardly ever comment. I really liked this. What I took away from this video was try to make the entire outfit, whether it's dressing up or down the purse or the rest of the clothes, so that the overall vibe of your entire outfit doesn't look so intensely "mature" or "immature/ cheap". It moderates the message and looks more comfortable, thereby being more appealing to others that see it. Great video!
Hi Sophie, hi everyone! I totally get this question. I've had the Chanel Jumbo for little over a year now and I honestly love this bag, even though it is quite heavy. During summer I love wearing it with classic high waisted light blue jeans and an oversized white shirt or a pair of denim shorts and a simple silk shirt. During winter it looks great with leather leggings, chunky boots (love to wear the Balenciaga ceinture ones) and an oversized Acne sweater, like the Raya one.
Btw, I scrrrrreamed when you put the bag next to the Louboutins. It's such a 2010 look. 😅

I loved the outfit that you matched with the sneakers. Super cute and edgy, but understated and elegant. When it comes to Valentino’s looking “tacky” with a flap, I think a pebbled leather or a smooth leather might look better and more youthful but still tasteful. Just my personal opinion.
