From Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll to Jesus: A Hippie's Journey to Faith, with Chuck Girard

  • My dad has had truly one of the most interesting lives. As a successful studio singer in Los Angeles as a young adult, rubbing elbows with The Beach Boys, to becoming a hippie living in Hawaii, he encountered the gospel of Jesus Christ at a little country church after searching for God through Eastern Mysticism, LSD, and popular philosophies of the '60s.

I was the Pastor of a small struggeling Church in New Zealand, I recieved a phone call one night out of the blue, from Chuck, I did not know him or he know me, he asked if we wanted him to come and play at our church. Told him we could not afford it, that was not an issue, he aim was to bless small struggleing churches. He came, he blessed us all and I am still blown away by his service, humilty and true deisre to serve and bless. After years in ministry I have seen many people come and go, but Chuck has left an amazing legacy.....

YOUR DAD IS CHUCK GIRARD ??? I saw Chuck Girard in concert in Denver when I was 17. I tell Alexa at least once a week, "Alexa, play Chuck Girard". I was leading a meeting at our church ladies group and there was a sense of heaviness in the meeting. I got out my cell phone and played a song for them. "Lay Your Burden Down." I still have that album. From 17 years old to now 62, Chuck Girard music has always blessed me. How fun for me to see this interview.

Great interview, Alisa! Your dad made a huge impact on me and my husband after we came to the Lord in 1971. My husband, being a musician himself, was so encouraged to find our kind of music in the Christian world, as we’d given up all the old stuff, the Beatles, etc. because it had such a hold on us. I had come out of the hippie drug scene. (I didn’t realize he was your father until quite awhile after I began listening to your podcasts.) Many of your podcasts have helped us greatly because one of our adult children, also a musician and producer, has gone the way of Progressive Christianity. You and your guests give us much encouragement and hope. Thanks for serving our LORD and King.

Enjoyed dinner out with him at a local eatery. We were the worship team for the meetings and one of the coolest things was when we were practicing one afternoon. Our drummer hadn't shown up yet & we suddenly heard the drums come in but definitely a cut or 2 above ours. When we turned around, there was Chuck! Blessings on you brother!

But someone gave me a copy of Chuck's music and I listen to it nonstop over and over and over again because It really ministered to me. Just so pure. I relate to your dads alcohol problems, and am very grateful for His honesty towards it.
I was delivered from alcohol 2019 after receiving Christ.
Last year I started having a beer here and there, cos you know I'm strong 😒and then at Xmas I found myself chugging it down(just the one) whilst people weren't looking..I realised then, it's only going to end bad if I continue like this.
I spent almost 20yrs trying to get rid of alcohol from my life. Jesus took it away in an instant. Why would I wanna go back to something that held me in bondage?
I now will not have a sip, am I tempted yes, but I cannot drink a drop because my flesh is so weak. People have tried and tried it's okay Donna one drink won't hurt. But they don't understand the bondage I was in or the freedom Christ has bought me. I will drink wine again with the Lord one day and it'll taste all the more sweeter. I look forward to that day, not the wine but my Jesus.

Thank you for posting this … when you said on another video that your dad was associated with Calvary Chapel I wondered who your dad was … I was saved in 1989 and he was on staff with Mike Mackintosh in Claremont Mesa about two blocks where I lived and where I had a religious experience with Jesus on mushrooms … anyways your dad baptized me in San Diego bay one day when the church had a large baptism! It was amazing what God was doing … Please tell your dad I went to be a missionary in hungary with Calvary chapel when there was a revival there and many youth came to God after communism fell. Today most of those who were saved are pastoring or serving in some capacity in the 40 or so Calvary chapels that are in hungary … now my wife and I pastor a Calvary chapel in the North of England … thank you thank you thank you for posting this … so good to hear!!! Thank you also for walking with Jesus and serving him!!! I first saw your work on Ruslan’s channel and then have been following you on unbelievable and your thoughts about Ashbury …. One more thing for your dad … my wife started a refugee camp ministry when we were in hungary and two significant people were saved in those camps … both went to a Calvary chapel Bible college in vajta hungary and after completing their time there, one went to Ethiopia and now runs a orphanage with over 100 orphans and the other pastors a Calvary chapel in Nigeria … I went there last year and was part of the first Calvary chapel pastors conference and there are now about ten calvary chapels out there so the fruit keeps showing up … please tell you dad that God used him mightly!

Great show Alisa with your dad Chuck who found Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Also impressed on how he pioneered music and made it on the Charts. Keep up the good work Alisa.

Hey Alisa. I knew Hal since I had played drums with Gary Lewis and the Playboys and many others lat 70's early 80's though. I was Hals phone buddy toward the end of his life when he was staying at his daughters house. I did share the gospel with him but not sure what happened if anything. Gary Lewis is a Christan now. Thanks for making the video on the Asbury Revival. Appreciate you

Ask your dad if he remembers playing at a little church in central Oregon to a tiny group of teenagers. There was a fledgeling group just starting out. They gave him their electric piano. That was my best friend. I remember him toting either you or a younger sister/brother out the door. Your mom was there.

I'm 70 and became a Christian in college. In the late 70s i think it was i went to a concert of your dad's. It was the first Christian concert I'd ever been to. I listened to Lay Your Burdens Down constantly! I wrote your dad a fan letter telling him how much his music meant to me, and I was so surprised that he actually wrote back thanking me. This is so wonderful to see this!!

Her dad is very gracious and allows Alisa to interview him and fill in gaps, as a good interviewer should, without seeming to feel disrespected or offended - just 2 adults having an honest conversation. This is great!

I still have my Love Song & Chuck Girard albums from the 70’s! These songs were a very integral part of introducing our family to God’s word, truth & worship, as my then young adult parents were searching (I guess they were deconstructing their faith:)
I’ve recently finished Alisa’s book & look forward to reading Chuck’s too.
Thank you both for this interview 🤗🙏🏻💕

Soooo cool, wondered if he played with Keith Greene....so cool...we got to hear you Dad last night at our church. I (Lynnel, Lyle's wife) am one of those hippies who found Jesus in the that day....loved just hearing his story, the Vineyard, Lonnie, etc...just such wonderful memories...so many of us walked out of bad lifestyles, took a bit of work from the Lord, but He's always there for us. Your dad is amazing...such a blessing, it's like I went full circle last night listening to him...and then to just sit and hear him speak again.

Tears flowed from time to time. So many times in what you said I thought of my one and only daughter.
She has always been a girl of faith. But we know everyone has to come to their own stance on Jesus which she has. Yet life will bring all the challenges. So I must always keep her in prayer.Thank you for this. Inspiring to me, and I have sent it to her. Love, peace and joy.

I respect how “right on” he is with his attitude and honor of the Word. But very real and open about how we can come to our conclusions.
More people need the freedom to explore and ask questions. Key point he brought out-the Holy Spirit leads and guides. Rich legacies coming from the the of you! What a blessing!

Omigosh, this brought back some memories! I still have -- on vinyl -- "Love Song, Good News", "Love Song, Final Touch", and "Chuck Girard". I also have Keith Green's "No Compromise" and "Songs for the Shepherd", along with many other Christian albums from those days. So much good music from back then. And I still remember the Scripture songs we sang in church (they're underlined in my old KJV).
Thank you for a great interview and, like some others, I did not know Chuck Girard is your dad. 🙂
