    Still riding a few lovely steel bikes with Campagnolo Nuovo and Super Record parts. Fast enough for riding with my friends, and no worries about batteries running out of charge. I do have a 42 x 24 low gear to get me up the hills in style, though! (mostly 6% or less)

    Job requirements for GCN presenters:
    1. Must be a cycling enthusiast (riding and/or watching)
    2. Must be willing to travel
    3. Being able to hold a discussion while riding in Zone 5+ is considered an asset.
    Kudos to Si and Ollie for being able to talk while doing those climbs.

    The pantani bit nearly put a tear to my eye. Yes, drug enhanced, but also, a man fastest up a mountain on his own power. On a bike pre-electric and carbon. Never to be repeated, never to be matched. Legend.

    Thank you so much for including my favorite in this compilation: Ollie on the Canning-special, exclaiming that after flipping the wheel his gearing feels 'positively MAGICAL!!' It's almost as lovely listening to his griping as it was watching Lasty's pain face.

    Every bike from the last year or older than that are already retro which is a recommendation to upgrade post-haste. (Source: bicycle industry)

    • @gcn
      @gcn  Месяц назад +1

      For you, at what point does a bike become "retro"? 🤔

    • @thefucrew9865
      @thefucrew9865 Месяц назад +1

      My 1970's ('73, I think) black Schwinn Continental (now with some 80's Aero bars wrapped in pink bar tape, with pink tires) is a "retro" bike.....
      While my 2019 (I think) Fuji Sportif LE 2.0 is a modern bike for me.
      (Because I couldn't afford a more costly or better bike at the time)
      Living in Chicago, you have to worry about getting "bike-jacked" (like being carjacked, but on a bike), or having it stolen from in the garage or back porch, so you have to be weary.
      The streets (constant potholes, cracks, damage, and debris) also are not conducive to steady riding.
      Traffic, is the same everwhere...except for Denmark.

      @@gcn When you can't get reasonably priced spares to keep the bike running, concerns mass produced bikes anyway, where extended life span is expected, to some level at least. Was potentially minimum couple plus decades earlier, but the derailleur hanger mess and proprietary components or designs have broken that a lot. Can be also when the shape and proportions of a bike starts to look more than couple of design generations back, but this is easily affected by perceived obsolescence aka bikes are changed intentionally to look different, so that the older bikes start to look old, goes with about any consumer products these days, from phones to cars to whatever. Old handmade or unique race bikes etc. are products of their time and the design biases easily render them 'retro' in an expert eye, when others may just see a bike that they may have never seen before and perceive it even the most modern.

    I know I know nothing but I wish Si would wear gloves. First thing you do in an everyday off is stick your hands out. Sorry, mate but that's my view.
    Perhaps I've missed an earlier vid that suggests - like when being tackled in junior rugby - you keep your hands in and roll with it....

    🤔Why is it that people make mean an unnecessary comments? Someone who may not be as "electronically experienced" is simply sharing what he believes may be interesting or useful to someone. Constructive comments are welcome, but pompous, arrogant and useless comments should be kept to one's self. They only serve to make others shy away from posting for fear of ridicule!!
