      Even not upgraded, that awful unridable slug is 25 years of essential engineering innovation newer than 99% of what I see most people out riding on training rides. Most of what I see are steel frames from the ancient to the botique, built with whatever old aluminum kinesis fork came on their previous bike & some old 90s campy. My gods how does anyone survive a road ride without buying whatever $12k molded plastic Chinese bike we’re being told is so much better this month lol

    I am only 57 mins into the video but I would really like to see a standard goof brand starter bike (I own a 2011 Trek 1.1) with no upgrades vs one of those super bikes to see the difference on how much the rider makes vs the bike. If a pro rider on one of those is only 15 seconds or so difference over a long distance... I would feel very happy to know a decent starter bike is pretty good for a basic rider.

    I thought Lemond used aero bars in an earlier stage (a mountain time trial). Fignon didn’t put in an objection at their use and so when he did put an objection in after losing the final stage (and thus the Tour) his objection was overruled.

    • @ronm9357
      @ronm9357 11 месяцев назад

      He had; he used them in _every_ TT (save the prologue) in the '89 TDF.
      And he didn't have to be convinced to use them. He saw them used earlier in '89 at the Tour de Trump and recognized their aerodynamic advantage and used them (along with 7-Eleven) in the '89 TDF.
      7-Eleven were the first pro cyclists to race on the tri-bars in the '89 Tour de Trump -- they also used them in the _final_ TT of a stage race (TDT).

    Boone Lennon advised Lemond about the positioning. So far true story. But team 7 Eleven used the aerobars already in Tour de Trump 1989. There Lemond noticed a very fast itt from sprinter Davis Phinney using aerobars. Lemond tried them in training and was convinced. Photos of the tdf prologue in Luxembourg show markings of an earlier attachment of aerobars (in training) at Lemond bullhornbars. I dont know if team & Eleven and toprider Andy Hampsten used the bars already in the prologue but in the first big itt from Dinard to Rennes Hampsten used the bars for sure. Nobody noticed. The performance of Lemond with aerobars was remarkable: stage win and yellow. Before the last itt Boone Lennon advised Lemond to but the bars higher up (like they do nowadays) to mimick the ski position. Conservative cycling world couldnt deny such a win using aerobars and the rest is history.

    34:30 You guys need to do a little more homework next time. LeMond used the tri bars for the stage 5 time trial and the hill climb time trial. He was not approached mid-race. The Coke can part is true. The bars slipped during the stage 5 time trial so Otto Jacome came up with the “Greatest Hack” of all time.

    • @___Bebo___
      @___Bebo___ 11 месяцев назад +1

      On flat rough surfaces like cobblestones modern tech does literally zero. On climbs its good though. It wasn't until 2017 and tubeless tires were a thing before the Paris Roubaix stage record from the 1960s was beaten on a carbon bike. The bikes bounced so much they were actually slower until squishy tires were invented.
      If you are a really slow rider you will probably have more fun on carbon because the bikes are super easy to pedal. If you are a strong rider with no interest in racing and you ride in urban areas steel bikes will give you a better ride and better handling. If you want to race at Cat 2 or above probably a good idea to be on carbon.
