Matt, while the radiator is out, replace water pump and thermostate, seeing how its been sitting for so long it wouldnt be a bad idea
Tyler Boyle I was going to say this. But you beat me to it. I hope he does it
Needs to do a full fluid change
Also replace the distributor that is mounted under the water pump on those models it's the main flaw of those years of Corvette.
thats a great idea to do as well I agree on this.
As someone who has done a lot of work on dozens of cars in this state I recommend he completely disassemble the vehicle. Replace all wires, build a new PCM and motor harness. Build a separate body harness, replace or remove anything plastic or moldy, completely rebuild the engine with better parts and start fresh from the brakes and suspension.
Any flood car the wiring is trash. I don't care what it looks like, its done. After the wiring is everything electronic the wiring runs, pcm, window motors, alternator, all of it. The best possible outcome is remove all of it and rebuild with new and better parts.
Black smoke = too much fuel
Blue smoke = burning oil
White smoke = head gasket/cracked block/head (coolant in cylinders)
TwistedVet blue smoke ?i never seen that before i thought burning was also white ?
Has the 1990 corvette an ecu which could be damaged by water so the engine gets too much fuel?
Black smoke = no new Pope
White smoke = new Pope!
@@TrigonixZeNW If the ECU gets water damaged, it's pretty rare for only certain things to stop functioning. Usually when it gets damaged, everything goes due to it all being in the same box, often on the same circuit board. It may potentially be the sensors which are broken causing it to run rich. Could be many things in the injection system.
We won't know until Matt starts digging deeper, but I'm looking forward to seeing what has caused it.
@@lilmigitondrugs3825 Think more like cool white vs warm white, there's for sure a blue-ish tint to it.
12:39 “...the wiring is all good”. As I understand the flood car problems with wiring, it is due to capillary action. As the wiring harnesses are flooded they begins to intake water into the space between the metal wire and the plastic insulation. Since this space is enclosed it cannot be effectively dried out. And since the water is retained over a long time period, corrosion can occur, this can affect the effective current carrying capacity of the wiring which leads to wires overheating and potential electrical fires. Electrical and electronic parts have similar issues or like the fans with moving parts, corrosion kills them from the inside out. You might test individual portions of the harness to compare actual wire resistance back to what that wire resistance should be, it will vary with the wiring gauge. Best to install new harnessing that supports mission critical components.
Hope Matt reads your posting. He would benefit from your knowledge.
Spot on
Can’t upvote this enough.
I would say get a complete new harness from wiring specialties or ry wire. Luckily for you matt there is endless factory and after market support for the car.
Agreed replacing all the Harness.
First upgrade: Musical horn. Will increase horsepower by 5%. Trust me.
Is that a Forza Glitch? 😂
Tristan Wibel no
You can get a full racing dash screen when you put in a different ECU, It's one display that you can easily customize digitally. You should check with Cleetus McFarland, he knows his stuff when it comes to Corvettes.
Cleetus is going to be in Texas soon he should help mat out give him a few pointers
Demo and cleetus together would be next level
Yeah, just don't let him convince you to turbo it his way or you won't have a hood with a ridiculous turbo sticking out the top lol.
Go to cletus
I love how he takes on projects like this and the mansion, really enjoyable to watch
It’s called merica my man
Hes got the vets office, bunker 1, bunker 2 going up, the mansion, works out regularly, has a healthy family AND he still pumps out demo videos for us. Matt is a god and I think hes immortal.
Thats what I was about to comment, I love those projects that are made into series
And you wouldn't expect him to do this kind of stuff, being a veteranrian and all. However I think he a great example of how you can do cool stuff and still be well educated.
Lennart Niehof agreed
Replace the water pump and thermostat when you have access to the whole front end torn apart and you have been having cooling issues.
"I spent 45 minutes just trying to get this one nut off."
- Matt 2020
MATT!! Safety glass when under the car is a must! Trust me, rust in the eye is no joke... Stay safe buddy, love your videos!
Clean the intake and clean the fuel injectors, drain the fuel, change all the fluids. Replace water pump, thermostat, coolant, oil, trans fluid, diff fluid and gas. Also make sure the computer is not water logged as well. I would supercharge it but its generally powerful enough with that engine. ;)
Turbo or Both! Lol
r0nb0h0ju u can turbocharge and supercharge the same engine?
do a collab with Cleetus and Jeremy from Fasterproms get him to help you with his experience and contacts for parts and they're both mad scientists in modifying corvettes 😎
Did not see your post until after I posted a comment. Would be awesome for a collaboration between demo and Cleetus.
@@jonathankemper178 hell yeh they'd get along so well too very similar.
Yup came on just to say talk to Cleetus.. he’ll get him some more bald eagles
I agree with that. He took a junkyard motor and turned his corvette into 1000 hp monster. He will be in Houston next Month for an event called Cleetus and Cars. With 3.2 millions subs double what Cleetus has I think he jump at the chance to do a colab. Check out his channel, he would be great help for what you are doing.
“This car is unmolested... so I get to do it”
Matt. Please.
DC4 🙅🏻♂️🙅🏻♂️
Matt, Would talk to Cleetus McFarland, a fellow youtuber. He has multiple race corvettes, and can help with custom dash, engine mods, and fabrication. Sells merch...so possible trade for some fabrication.
Don’t talk to cleetus talk to jermey bc cleetus has no experience with that cam over engine an jermey has one

"hey, ill give you this ar-15 for that corvette radiator" -the most american sentence to ever be spoken
@@whitneyduncan6523 Im sure James knows a thing or 2 as well, he seems to be a car encyclopedia
I'd also change the fluids and sparkplugs as well as getting a new wiring harness. With flood damaged cars you never know how bad things are.
Also put a new supercharger and blower on the car like Toast (see cleetus Mcfarland)
If you don't go all out now, you'll be fixing electronic bugaboos for years!

I own a 93 ZR-1 40th anniversary in black. Glad to see you're trying to bring this one back to its original glory. Very underrated cars.
Boys, I think this calls for a Cleetus McFarland collab video. Maybe even Jeremy from Fasterproms. Matt, you need to call the boys at McFarland racing.
Came here to say the same thing. That vette needs a Texas Speed motor!
@@calsonic86 hell Texas Speed would probably give him a block just for the advertisement potential.

@@scythelord Wonder if Texas Speed has parts that would work with an LT5. It's not exactly a common LS-style engine. Be damn cool if they did!

Get with cleetus McFarland and Jeremy from fasterproms they are Corvette guys and make plenty of high horsepower cars
#fasterproms has basically this same.vet he is a power adder genius and knows these older fuel injection systems
Talk to Cleetus McFarland and Jeremy from Fasterproms. This is would be a perfect combination of channels.
He should definitely talk to Cleetus McFarland
That was the first thing that came to my mind! PLZ make this happen!
Twin Turbskies on the ZR1?
Henry Socha supercharger is more Corvette ZR1 style
samueld308 Hell Yeah Brother!! Let her Eat with Cleet! Would be nice if you could do an EFI conversion on this and drop in a Haltech or Holley Dominator. He’s more than that. He is so giving and does so much for Houston. He’s a great man. He loves his Houston teams. I hope you enjoy that car.
Matt should do a collab with his Corvette with cletus McFarland.
Something Blank no more like fasterproms( who Cleetus shares his shop with) Jermey has his dad’s C4 which used to hold the world record.

Cleetus is subcribed to OffTheRanch
He should Leroy or ruby this thing
Something Blank that is a good idea
That car need to be a Demo Ranch / Cleetus Mcfarland special!

Put it on a trailer and take it to Fasterproms in Pinellas Park, Florida once it's running. Jeremy is a C4 Corvette genius.
🤘💪
Get Cletus McFarland and Texas Speed involved to help get this ZR1 back up to speed!
It needs to be fully tore down and put back together it would be easier than just fixing stuff here and there
Easier no, long lasting.. yes
I agree Brent, strip it and rebuild it
@@natesaunders5628 it would be a lot easier to just have the car torn apart and replace and refurbish things. If he had the hood, radiator and what not off to access it would make it so much easier
I wouldn’t waste my time on it.
florida life if all of the compression is good and it starts then there’s no reason to rebuild the whole thing. Electronics and cooling systems are the only thing faulty so if he gets that done he’ll be ahead of the game
Glad you're rescuing it. Amazing car and not sure why so many people have these just sitting and rotting in their back yard. I recently bought an 84 Corvette that was neglected, but after a couple months or replacing parts, its running pretty good now.
When you're working on the car the show should be "Vette Ranch"
Very good.
Yes!
I think he should call his good friend Tavarish and rebuild it all
Good one Charlie.
I just posted my name idea, (Texan accent "Demo Wranch" instead of wrench) and yours is just as GOLD!
Need to get ahold of cleetus McFarland make like one of his Corvettes
That would be a waste of a ZR-1 like this, they're rare and this one is basically all original. If you want a crazy racecar build one out of a base C4.

Came here to say this. Needs to happen
Cleetus collab !!!!!!! He always comes down to Houston so it makes sense and I want to see him on demo ranch burnouts and pew pews!!!!!
Anyone feel free to correct me. A lot of references to Cleetus or Jeremy, neither of which have experience with anything like this (closest is maybe project neighbor). The C4 ZR-1 LT5 was built by mercury marine, and is to this day the only DOHC V8 to be put in a corvette (excluding the C8.R and potentially 2022 Z06). With that said, would love to see some turbos on it. Look to the Callaway Sledgehammer for inspiration. Also worth checking out the newest mercury racing engines, the 1550’s are incredible.
Lingenfelter engineering.. they do Corvettes, including ZR1 Vettes!
Get with Cleetus McFarland and get it ready for Cleetus and cars in Houston.

Toast Texas Edition
Jaggsta 13:43 there goes your opinion
Heck yea!
I would change the hoses and thermostat while it is all apart.
An engine reseal would probably not be a bad idea after its been sitting for so long.
He’s probably just seeing if it turns first
As someone from Houston I think its really awesome you got Mack's old car! I grew up seeing it on some of his commercials.
Keep the lt5, for the interior rip out all the old nasty 90’s interior and replace it with a modernized style maybe with like a custom dash, door cards, some good seats, and a nice new carpet?
Alex Stettler Tavarish’s interior guy from the fandf lambo would do great work
Under glow, spoiler, quad exhausts, and a fresh paint job
I like your idea kinda but strip the interior turn it into a race car and give it a lot more hp. Twin turbo?
Matt take the hood off that will make it easier to access the whole engine
You really can’t without the hassle of undoing headlight wiring and other wiring
I second that motion. Would be easier to fix the headlights that way.
I third. Plus takes away of the possibility of the hydraulics giving out and slamming on him. #SafetyFirstRanch
@@yaboiz4232 Problem is that he has to fix the headlights anyway since they light up but wont flip outward so he might as well take out the headlights and take off the hood.
@@bobwhite4338 by hydraulics you mean his old broom stick wedged in there holding it up 😂
Get in contact with Cleetus Mcfarland and Texas Speed.
This is not just a C4 Vette. It’s a ZR1! It has a very special engine and many other upgrades over other C4’s. It’s apparently had a rough life. I suggest a full restoration with hidden upgrades to make it better but look the original part. That’s a special car with its own special place in automotive history at a time when there wasn’t much special in the automotive world. Matt, it deserves a proper rebuild

GradyRho92 helll yea.
Because the aircooling unit is so close to the engine block, there's heat building up which is why those Corvettes tend to overheat. You could get venting slots in the hood (might be left and right or a center one) which could really help with airflow out of the engine compartment
Once you've got it restored/built it up, I'd love you to show it to Mattress Mack!
I wanna see that happen
Hell yeah dude! Honestly Mack probably will get a newer modern remake of it.
Maybe do a collaboration with fasterproms and Cletus McFarlan. They both have custom built corvettes.
Should have drained the tank before trying to start it. I'm guessing that the injectors are pretty gunked up now if they weren't before.
should have done that with mostly all the fluids when it was in a flood 17 years ago and sat scince then... even "just" 17 years of sitting would be bad for almost all fluids... would be a miracle IF it doesnt needs a complete cleaning and rebuild
Dang, now you have to keep a label or 2. Totally an American hero!
Definitely get in contact with Cleetus McFarland. He'll know how to help you out.

When a motor sits for that long, the gaskets tend to degrade and things may rust in the bore. I would try some Slick 50 and hope the rings are not broken. If it were me, I would tear it down completely and rebuild the engine and drivetrain. Wheel bearings are something to check as the grease tends to fall apart in water. No one uses marine grade grease on cars. Also check the relays and fuses, this should give you an idea of future wiring adventures. Looks like a fun car to be working on!

Matt, I have a 1993 Corvette that I've been working on and autocrossing. You should definitely take a look at the Ridetech Coilover package for the C4 Corvettes! It only just came out in ~November, but looks like a much more promising package than other coilover systems. I just bought and installed the Ridetech HQ single adjustable shocks on my C4 and so far I'm loving them.
Supercharge it and put a Holley efi stand-alone ECU and use one of their screens for your gauges
You've gotta get a video with Cleetus McFarland working on this thing that would be legendary
