The biggest fear for having a second kid is financial uncertainty. Unpredictable lay offs, high education and medical costs make life really tough. And most of the times mothers are forced to quit job to take care of young kids.
Moreover children are life time commitments. They demand your time, attention and efforts for rest of your life. So planning well in advance is utmost necessary.
Wion has stressed on an important issue yet again.

same. single child is the best. I have seen 2 of my female cousins being beaten by their older brothers, one of them even made his sister end a relationship near home and sent her far away from home (arranging her marriage) so that he doesn't have to share even the slightest bit of their parents' property with her. Another is a total psycho, and their family is psycho too, the sister sings so well, but they make them do all the house chores and not pursue her singing career.

Having a young kid now, it is very challenging in modern day. Beside financial part, time, health, and parents happiness also a sacrifice. It is a blessing for me to have a full fulling sleep as parents. I rarely have them. Find help is also challenging. In America, even as Asian, it is hard to ask help among families member to watch over a child for 2 hours. Community culture is pretty much an extinction. It is a lonely challenging road to raise a child. All the sacrifices to care for a child worn down our body. I have yet to find having a child as blessing. Hope I think so in the future.

Before having a kid, a couple who lives in a city without parents and paying rent, they do well even on a single income and living a stress free life. They even are able to buy their own flat and have some savings in some cities on a single income. However, after having a kid, both have to work, wife has to go to office after having a kid, they cannot live peacefully, they can't sleep, they trouble their old parents (if alive) to leave their hometown and come to city to take care of the child. Those whose parents cannot come or passed away end up spending half their income on having a cook and a maid. It is such a pittance. All for having a kid in an increasingly westernised world where eventually kids will not care for their parents.
Rather be satisfied on a single income, don't have kids, work for your needs and live a peaceful minimalistic life. The system is designed to help the rich get richer by making you work more and restricting your freedom, and your consumerist behaviour continuously incentivises them. Life is becoming increasingly lonely as we ape the west and all 3-member families I see are struggling emotionally, financially, as well as physically.

Some may feel parents having 1 child are going to spoil the child. A place like China the government once enforced the 1-child policy and put financial penalty on families having more children. Now families are allowed to have more kids but they don't want to. Besides attending school, the extracurricular activities for the 1 child including after-school tutoring, art & music classes, sports would fill the week. It's tiring taking kids to different activities during the week. In China there is the added pressure of the Gaokao (university entrance exam) taken in the last year of high school which would determine whether someone would attend some of the best universities in the country.
Some people still have large families for cultural / religious reasons such as the Christian fundamentalists in the southern US. As long as there is no expectation any of the kids would go to college or climb the corporate ladder. if someone goes to college for a graduate degree, he/she may delay marriage and end up with fewer kids.

It's not just about education & societal pressure. If you're okay with your grandchildren not having any cousins or siblings that doesn't mean they'll be okay with it when they come of age. It's a decision taken too early just because some people thought it would be better to depopulate the world for their personal convenience. & You must be aware that the fertility rate required for successful replacement of population is 2.1.
