Fenamenal Andrew proves that he is absolutely at a different level in mixing and teaching. Amazing explanation after the test. And how you hear those things is impressive. Thanks for the video, my friend.
It’s one thing being technically brilliant, it’s something way different to give a mix more soul and feel to bring out the performance and therefore make the technical facets disappear, well that’s what I’ve always believed for the last 46 years, whether in the studio or live, the song is king, capturing and highlighting the performance is the achievement when it works out, rest are just tools
Hearing the subtle differences is Impressive, but knowing their Signature sound is amazing! 😮 Hey Andrew, I really really wanna know whats your take on TimP Opto32 (LA2A) , UVI Opal ..do you think they are in the ballpark of the real LA2A in terms of dynamic action, saturation, depth n analog realism... ??
I only recently got UAD stuff after having cheap waves plugins for years... they ARE different. The pultec is different, and the tape emulator (whatever it's called) is unlike any other tape emulator I've ever heard. Most of them you have to crank them way up, then by A/Bing it on and off you KINDA hear something. The UAD one doesn't need any settings, you turn it on and it's like BOOM!
You're a true audio psycho Andrew! That's completely mental, but clearly there is a difference between them which can impact your mix when combined with other nuances from other plugins. Thanks for more great insight 🙏
I'd be interested to hear you guess on vocals that somebody else set up the compression on for you in a test like this. I feel like most pro engineers would be able to tell the difference between each compressor on vocals they compress themselves, but maybe not on someone else's work? Idk. Great video!
The only thing what I can tell you that I can hear more things than most pro engineers. Also if somebody set up them, they would make different volumes and amount of compression which automatically changes the whole point. I will compare louder VS quieter and more saturation vs less. The point was each plugin maker has a tone, waves boosts second harmonic, AK always the loudest harmonics, UAD odd harmonics, AK is fatter, Softube is silky, and all these are in all their plugins.
Wow that is super impressive! So to which one do you gravitate most when needing a compressor? Do you decide which one would suit best every time or do you have a go to that you try first? Which ones do you never use?
It’s a global question. I recommend you to try my course. Also check my video on Critical Thinking approach. you will understand, I don’t decide on a primitive way.
It’s one of the topics on my course, so I cannot give you the direct answer to this as I keep it for my students. Also, each real LA2A is a bit different but point of this video is each plugin manufacturer has their own unique nuances. I explained them in the middle of this video. And it’s exactly what I heard in the blind test.
You should make a video on why anyone would still use these crappy old compressors... in the 1950s, sure it's all you had... today, why would you want these compressors with limited settings where you can't see what you are doing, no attack and release. I bought this LA-2a from waves and UAD... the 1176 also... then I got them and I thought , WHY? They are junk... if I want compression I will use the Pro-C, if I want to flavor the sound, I'll use saturation... only an amateur is thinking... "ooooo plugin that models a compressor from the 50s what adds random saturation to the sound and I can't see what's actually being compressed? No attack or release???? PERFECT!"
Pro-C doesn't give as good results as these classic compressors tbh. With those classic compressors you're forced to hear carefully what they're doing to the sound and you set the amount of compression by your ear, not by an eye. Also the compression behaviour is really good and natural sounding for vocals with UAD 1176 for example where Pro-C is giving very questionable results. Also the "random saturation" is actually desirable in many cases where you have to deal with homerecorded tracks and sterile, boring electronic samples. You don't need to use many plugins to achieve the desired effect when you use those classic gear emulations
Pro-C is fast forward compressor which doesn’t hold volume for vocals well. LA2A is two stage release compressor. So you absolutely can’t replicate LA2A by Pro-C. Pro-C doesn’t have any analog coloration. Pro-C is not even top ten compressor on my list. Only in top 20. Also we can’t know how you setup those compressors to judge. Also those two plugins doesn’t mean they sound like 1950 LA2A. Anyway it’s a personal choice. I know pros and cons of LA2A.
@@AndrewZeleno1You should still maybe do a video exploring this.. I'm not convinced... if you actually want to compress a signal, you'd want what Pro-C. Using these 50's emulations of compressors feels like what everyone does with a compressor the first day they get FL studio... people don't know what they do but it "sounds better," where as when you really understand compression you can see the limitations of even pro-C depending on how you want the relationship between attack and release to be... with LA2A or 1176 you'll never be able to tell that.
Your shitty plug-ins would not have anything to emulate if it wasn’t for those ‘crappy old compressors’ those old compressors weren’t depending on bullshit Computer magic to make something sound good. It was a lot of thought went into all of those designs to make them work the way that they get and the fact that millions of people around the world are familiar with their sound because their sound was musical. You need to grow up a little boy.

My pleasure!
Yeah, that's really unbelievable skill to hear such a small nuances in the audio! Thank you Andrew! Happy to be your student!😎😀🎸
Hi Rommy! Thanks! Nice to see you here as always 😊
This is an example of many years of self-improvement. Respect!!!
Thank you!
Andrew has golden ears. And when I attanded the course, he showed all this things much deeper.
thanks so much! glad to hear from you!
I confirm
I don't know anybody who hears things like this. Impressive!
Thank you!
Pfff. You didn't see how Andrew check home works. This is where his ears are impressive. I'm a former student.
:) thanks man. It’s always nice to hear from my former students.

Fantastic! Thank you, Andrew! Unbelievable hearing.
My pleasure!
I'd love to see a LOT more of these challenges and shootouts.

haha! Thanks!
good job! for future ABX tests theres a free plugin made by HOFA.
Thank you.
Great video, as usual! Good to see you back, Andrew!
Thank you, man! :)

A real pro, love all your content
Thanks! It means a lot to me!
The only one I could consistently pick out was the Waves as it was the worst of the bunch.
Hey guys, comment for supporting this video, like and subscribe.
очень понравилась недавняя версия от NEOLD. а вот новая от SOFTUBE не зашла совсем
интересно
great!
thanks!
What’s your take on the NEOLD U2A?
Now let’s hear the real one. What’s the difference who is closest closest to the real one?
It’s one of the topics on my course, so I cannot give you the direct answer to this as I keep it for my students. Every single „real“ one sounds different so this whole process is mute point, just make it sound as good as you can with what you have…
When does the first class of the course start?
please send me an email to andrewzeleno@gmail.com and I will give all the details.
Is there not any truth in the saying that no two hardware units really sound alike?
comment for support!
