when watching Patricia in KUA, even supposedly not being able to sing in the program, it becomes apparent what a fine voice she has as soon as she opens her mouth to sing.
She recorded major roles in two BBC broadcasts of Gilbert & Sullivan operettas (Iolanthe and Ruddigore), and of course played Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance in Central Park... Joseph Papp's "music hall" adaptation, with Kevin Kline, Rex Smith and Linda Ronstadt (but Routledge stole the show). And she starred in two (ill-fated) Broadway shows: Darling of the Day (Jule Styne) and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (Leonard Bernstein). My first encounter with her comic and vocal brilliance was on LP: the recording of the revue Cowardy Custard, in which she sang "straight" ballads like I'll Follow My Secret Heart and delivered comedy numbers like I Went to a Marvelous Party to riotous effect. And hunt down her two appearances in the original videos of Alan Bennett's Talking Heads: genius!
@MaltingFarm99 Yes, you can buy a DVD with this production of the Beggar's Opera. Arthaus Musik, cat. no. 102 001, directed by Jonathan Miller, conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
How clear and tuneful is her voice. Not enough though. There should be much more of her singing for us to access. One of a kind is our Miss Routledge, a true professional.
This scene is so very similar to the Mrs Lovett/Tobias Not While I’m Around from Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd ... makes you ponder how marvellous Routledge would have been in the role. She was, legend has it, initially considered for the role in the first production in 1979 but it eventually went of course to the equally wonderful Angela Lansbury.
Wow! I knew Pat Routledge could sing, but never knew she was had such a rich mezzo-soprano voice. Are there any more clips of her singing on RUclips? Or a CD?
Patricia Routledge is multi talented, a beautiful voice, a gifted and versatile actress. I am wondering whether that is Phil Davis in that scene....does anyone know?
Not only is this the best version of this song, sung by the incomparable Patricia Routledge, but I could listen to it on repeat for an hour solid.
She has a great voice. I love her work so much!
I bought the Beggars Opera on DVD after seeing this - Patricia's great in it, and does a good deal of singing.
Patricia Routledge is just a brilliant actress and performer.
Wow, that was wonderful! What a rich, mature voice, and I loved the acting!

If this had been a motion picture Patricia Routledge would doubtless have won an Academy Award. THAT'S how phenomenal her performance is.
I had no idea that she really can sing!!!
I absolutely love her as an actress and now.. Oh my god, her talent is so veristale

Isn't Patricia Routledge just a wonder!
Glorious!!!
Her narration of Wuthering Heights on Audible is excellent as well.
*All bow to Dame Patricia!~*
What production is this from? Is it available on DVD? I'd love to see the whole thing. This really is great. What a voice she has!
A tv film made in 1983.
OMG!!! She can sing, too!
Gary Tibbs does a fantastic job as Filch in this production of The Beggars Opera. He also appeared in Ant Muzak as Dirk the grocery store manager.
I always wondered if Patricia could sing. Very wonderful--and amusing too! Signed, a diehard KUA fan.

Look for her singing Gilbert and Sullivan.
A bluddy wonderful performer.😊😊😊
Like so many British actors, she can play any part convincingly. Bravo.
my, Mrs. Bucket would frown upon Patty's Behaviour! I expected that from Rose!!!

Yes John, she had a beautiful voice, was a gifted comedienne, and was a first rate dramatic talent....in short....she was wonderful!
Rodney you are using the past tense, Patricia ia alive and well thankfully.
Is wonderful! She is 94 y/o and still going strong.
Filch didn't pay attention to Hyacinth' s advice and end up as a caretaker at Hogwarts.
It’s Mrs. Bucket!
@idbwuas Agreed. Before I came across this clip, I had no idea how well she could sing! I'm afraid many people are as oblivious as I was..
I saw her first doing Gilbert and Sullivan, and have thought of her mainly as a singer.
Love, love...LOVE PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE‼️😍🥰❤️🇬🇧🎉🥂🍾🎭🏆

It's probably very unusual to find it; but, does anybody happen to have the clip of where Patricia Routledge is singing "I Want To Be In Opera"?
ruclips.net/video/ReSlfsw5iJY/видео.html here is a clip
O wow! Wat film is dat and where cn i get it? d beggars opera is d coolest ting eva! And who plays Filch?

Tsk tsk! See, Emmett? She really CAN sing! You should have let her be in the church musical after all!
She pretends to sound bad on KUA, to "impress" Emmett
Is that Baldrick?
She did not sing "Sisters...Sisters....." in this clip :😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have just seen a very mediocre updated version of The Beggar's Opera at the Edinburgh festival. This clip is a gazillion times better.
Of course's it's better! Look WHO else is in it: ruclips.net/video/Swt0vXi18Ss/видео.html
