Apple sure doesn't care about computers, or rather, the functionality and utility of their Mac OS devices. They're pretty much just a brand name and they know there will be enough people to pay the exorbitant prices for their shiny electronics. Furthermore, they're pretty much the iPhone company now, so even less reason to care about making a useful machine. On some level, they know it would be useless to compete with Microsoft's dominance if they bothered to care more and had less runaway success with iPods and iPhones in the first place.
Apple is not trying to replace the MacBook with the iPad. They are trying to get windows users to switch to an iPad. They are targeting individuals who can’t afford a $1000+ machine. The reason that they are bringing more iPad features to MacBooks is because it’s more appealing to wealthier people who will get the MacBook as a status symbol not because they actually need one. Apple is just pushing people to use the app store on Mac due to the revenue it generates but they know they know how important external apps are and would never remove that ability. They know who their target audience is very well.
