Something I didn’t really think about until I was almost done with this video is that if Soul did actually resonate with you strongly in a positive way, I don’t want to take that away from you. I’m genuinely happy you enjoyed the movie and got a lot out of it! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you for that.
But I also want you to recognize that if “Appreciate the little things” is what resonated with you, it’s because you probably already had your own definition that works for you. And that’s really great for you!
The thing is, you could get that message from almost any movie, and if you tried to use Soul for guidance on what that phrase should mean, or are in a situation where you don’t have a direction outside of your dreams, all Soul ends up doing is shining a light on all of your problems and dismissing them. It doesn’t provide a real, tangible solution for what you should be aiming for, it just gives a vague sense that it exists but you need to be “enlightened” to find it, which is demeaning and unhelpful.

Actually I agree with the movie message, our dreams don't matter.. Why?
Because life is ephemeral anyway, it's going to end sooner or later, we live just few years in this world.
Many people out there are so eager and so frustrated trying to accomplish "their dreams" that they forgot about finding pelassure in the simplest things. Hollywood always showed movies about people fighting for their dreams and succeeding on it, but in the real world that doesn't always happen; it's not just about having a dream, it's also about realizing what are your possibilities to achieve it, everything depends on your social circle, your capabilities, the country where you have born, etc. For example, I don't think that Bill Gates would be the richest man in the world if he would born in Africa, no matter how big his dreams were.
Sometimes you may be able to achieve your dreams, but in most cases this doesn't happen, and that's why there are so many frustrated people out there. The life purpose is one of the most toxic preachings that have spread in the last years.
Soul is a movie that finally exposes the toxicity of the "achieving your dreams" concept.
Living the life is more important than achieving a goal that you will have to leave anyway. It is not about being happy all the time because that would be absurd and impossible, but it is just about living your life with the possibilities you have, period.

Honestly I liked the movie, but now I feel like shit because everyone else hates it. I liked the message because at this point it's all I have left to live for. If not that, if my dreams don't mean anything and I have to get a job I hate for the rest of my life, why should I even live. I really do side with 22, no one wants to live anymore because life is not ideal. All I've ever seen around me is pain and people who hate their life and have no choice but to keep doing it and keep suffering. This world is fucked and we have a right to not have to be a part of it. I'm so tired of this shit. Fuck.

Hard disagree with this, I have to say. I definitely don't think "appreciating the little things" is the same as saying "be happy all the time". That's ridiculous. Appreciating the little things is just that. Not taking things for granted. That's not the same as saying "What do you have to feel sad about?".
On top of that, I don't even think that was the message of the movie. My interpretation at least was pretty much exactly what you said the movie should've been in the last segment, about how we shouldn't be conditioned to believe pursuing our passions as careers should be our only goal in life as if it's the legacy we'd leave behind. If we have passions and dreams, we should pursue them, but it's not the only thing we live for. Life is tough, we do have to make comprises sometimes and even if we do make it, we may not feel fulfilled.
That's the trap both Joe and 22 fell into and it's the lesson they both had to unlearn. Joe had realise that there was more to life than his pursuit of his music career and 22 had to realise that her lack of a specific passion didn't mean she wasn't worthy of a life.
The meaning of life is to live it.
So I'm really curious as to how I got that out of the movie and you didn't.
I found myself watching this video, saying "yes" to every sentence you said and agreeing with most of your points, but then you somehow landed on a conclusion completely different to mine and I don't understand how you got there.

I actually agree with pretty much everything you’re saying, and I agree that that’s what the movie should have ended on. But I think the reason I got frustrated with the movie is that it seemed like it asked the question, “What does it mean to have a fulfilling life, and how do your goals and career fit into that?” and answered it with “just appreciate the little things,” which is completely unrelated. You can appreciate the little things and still feel unfulfilled or empty, and you can also have a life’s goal while appreciating the little things. But the movie framed “appreciating the little things” and “having goals and dreams” as essentially at-odds with one-another by more-or-less dismissing all of Joe’s internal conflict and struggles and focusing just on him appreciating the act of existing at the very end.
I think what the movie wanted to say was “don’t focus too much on any individual thing or goal; having a fulfilling life requires putting effort into several different areas,” (which it sounds like is your takeaway from the movie) but that’s completely different from “fulfillment in life just requires appreciating the little things,” which (to me, at least) implies that you shouldn’t work so hard or care so much. But that’s also what the movie decided to end on instead.

The issue with people who hate the film is they want one clear answer to a question as complex as the meaning of life. The movie does the smart thing and leaves it open-ended. Everyone finds their own meaning be it there kids, loved ones, loves, etc. So since its pixar people expect some simple message. I also think people watch it and hear the hype and get mad when it doesn't blow their minds. Its a great movie and deserves praise. I think it hits harder with those who want to ponder and think the meaning...which it did since many hate reviews are about it...hence bringing people to care so much. I also think yeah the issue people have was addressed in the film...it just wasn't told to you outright more show don't tell.

I'm happy for all the people that found the movie inspiring and helped them to view living in a better light, but sadly the movie didn't do that for me.
I could relate to 22 a lot, since my whole life I never had a passion or any dream I wanted to pursue.
And with society telling you when you're young how you should already know what you want to be and how you could if you just worked hard enough, no one ever told me what I was supposed to do with my life if that wasn't the case.
Sadly, the movies answer to that question didn't help.
To enjoy life for just living alone doesn't work for me, since I have way to much anxiety to deal with to achieve that.
I always wished there was something out there, waiting for me that I just hadn't found yet.
A hidden passion that would make every insufferable day of my life worth it in the end.
Even if it would end up being a dream I would never achieve, just having something alone to chase after to keep me going and give me some sense of "this is all worth something" would be enough.
But there isn't and the movie says as much.
It's solution to the problem doesn't help me, since I already experienced how living life is for me and it being a nightmare in itself.
How much I would love to not just live for others, but for something of my own.
But there is none and I'm as wise as I was before I watched the movie.

Pixar has gone so far downhill with its feature length movies. It was *solely* based off pandering. Ironically, this movie actually lacks *soul.* I felt more for Coco than this movie, and Coco was more culturally sensitive and deeper in its message and it wasn't even a Pixar film.

You're right, people shouldn't just tell you to stop being sad and just be happy.
The way I see it, it was never about the "little things" when they showed that scene with the stuff that came from Joes pockets. It was the connections that he made with people (including himself) that manifested as experiences he associated with those "little things".
    Fireworks with his family...
Sand and water on his feet with his mom when his dad died...
The falling seed when 22 was just watching other people just live life...
The pie between him and himself...
Its sad to miss these things at times and only understand and remember them long after it all happened...
But I guess it would make it less painful if you notice it sooner and make the experience last longer (or shorter idk)
Its more for making things less sad than making things more "happier"
But in a way thats the same thing I guess...
But yeah stop using "my generation" it tends to piss people off

I haven't seen the movie, but I'm not sure if I agree that "appreciating the little things" makes a toxic message. This goes beyond society crushing your dreams - life itself will always push you toward death and despair regardless of previous achievement, and sometimes the best way to respond is to withdraw from the pressure and just ride the experience. Ideals will crumble, but you will always have some resources in the real.

Also I think another problem with the movie is that it's both trying to be closer to real life and be an indie style film along the same lines as Rattatoiu but at the same time it's trying to be more cartoony and imaginative like Inside Out.
Not that you can't make it work or that either is better than the other but like you said it feels like the people making it were constantly arguing and trying to tell their version of the movie.

Interesting review. I'm at a different place in my life than you are, which might be why I perceived a different message.
Joe has had blinders on his whole life. He had an experience as a child and fixed on replicating that as his goal. He sees the bright, shiny part of being a career musician, but never looks into what else it entails. It's an inspiration, but not truly a goal.
He's so focused on achieving that one thing that he disregards the journey he is truly on. His journey brings him to teaching, something he's quite good at and which brings him fulfillment he's ignoring.
Did you notice the scene where he's out on the street after performing for the night? Did you see the dismay that crossed his face when he realized it was not a once in a lifetime experience, but an ongoing job that has the potential to become a grind? It turns out not to be exactly what he wants.
That for me was the message: pay attention along the way, because the destination you are fixated on might not be where you really want to go.
On another note, I'm the offspring of musicians, and I know too well the struggle between wanting to ply your art and needing to make the rent. It's okay if work is just a way to pay the bills, as long as you also feed your soul outside of that.

I think this is a pretty hard misinterpretation of the movie. You keep segmenting the theme because you can't reconcile how multiple ideas can be true due to misinterpretation. The movie is pretty expressly about passions and careers. Appreciation of the little things ties in with all the themes about compromise and passion. The movie tells us that passion is what drives us through the world, but you have to be willing to make compromises to that passion. However, the movie doesn't stop there. When forced to make compromise, the movie tells that we should appreciate the smaller things in life that we have now and take life as it comes to us. The little things refer to a lot, but in the movie its show to represent the things we do day by day, the people we interact with, and the way we share our passions with others.
The movie isn't telling you what to do. It's not telling you to ignore your problems or give up on your dreams. It's just giving perspective. That's what the protagonist has at the end of the movie. He has perspective and can now live in the moment without being deeply unfulfilled. He hasn't forgotten his passion or given up on himself, he's just appreciating where he is now.
The theme you described at the end is literally what the movie depicted. Him teaching and sharing his passion for music with the students that will listen is literally him incorporating his dream into other areas of his life and imbuing it into other people, even though he's not doing exactly what he wanted to do. Those moments are the "little things" driven by his passion.

I think they had a good idea, but did not or could not execute it well. I'm not able to put my thumb on it, and this movie was good in a lot of ways, but somehow fell short. I'll admit I was in high hopes for this one. I might have a bias, but I wasn't impressed. It kinda lacks that *soul* other Pixar films had, even the sequel films from the same studio. It just seems more bland. It's not bad, but it isn't good.

Wow you are just strait up cynical and please stop saying "my generation" your view is absolutely not representative of all millennials. Soul is more about not falling into that trap of "you must find a purpose". You made alot of valid points and yes the ending is vague simply because there is NO ANSWER THAT FITS ALL. The entire reason why we never see what 22's last thing is that gets her pass full perfectly illustrates that. Too many people have dreams of things like fame and fortune, artistry etc. All great things to dream about but nobody ever takes into account that you actually need more than belief and ambition. You said luck which is true, since the only way anyone moves up is when someone who is the gate keeper and holding the purse strings says its you who gets a shot, but you also need actual talent. The reason the barber was content is because he actually had talent for cutting hair and found other things to make him happy and fulfilled. It's not the toxic positivity you're trying to equate this film to (inside out already did that by showing how joy's obsession with trying to keep Riley only happy and disregarding sadness's value, led to disaster). A friend of mine who went back to her native Estonia once said that it's not about finding yourself in life but about getting lost in all life has to offer. We exist. We have time. It's all in how you use it and in how you find the things that give you the feeling of being alive whether it's fulfilling a dream or something as simple as pizza or a sunset. That's the message this film conveys. Otherwise 22 wouldn't have actually wanted to be born by the end. She was literally educated by the best of humanity (except mother Teresa she was a monster irl) was basically shown everything life has but only when she actually experienced it 1st hand did she actually appreciate it and even want it. You dont appreciate something if it's all there and perfect. The film was more about not letting obsession, ambition, and the monotony of life drag you down into hollow version of you. Joe and 22 had very specific goals they went out of their way to fulfill and when they did, it didn't kindle the exact joy they assumed was gonna happen. It was only when they ended up changing course and experiencing other things that they finally gained perspective. It's not about being content or appreciating the little things we take for granted. It's more about learning to see things differently, appreciating what you didn't know you had and not taking life for granted. Just a huge lesson in gratitude. I'm a humitarian working with vulnerable populations, and a security guard on the weekends. I've seen the worst of humanity, and those life has basically left behind. At work I literally meet the very celebs people; wish, obsess, dream, pay to see etc. (I worked for bts this weekend and got to meet them in person for the 4th time while a stadium of 50000 stans screamed their lungs out for these guys). It's only job, I don't make that much. Yet I get to experience some the best things in life like moments in history, or see just what a**holes some people really are and how messed up life really is. Lots of people have told me they envy the things I've experience and I've envied the things they've done too. At the end of the day, I'd rather be me than them.
