when i first attempted this fight, it was a real struggle, eventually i stopped for the day, before my next session i got the idea of using goron shield (enemy skill materia) to reflect his shots, and it is so overpowered, and makes is so much easier, can highly recommend for this fight, at least for my playstyle it made staggering him alot more easy, never seen anyone mention goron shield for any fights so far, it may be an underrated skill, as it also gives a bunch of ATB back when it gets triggered
@@DesuNicoi would have to replay basically the whole chapter on hard, so i don't want to do that, but basically all you gotta do is time the shield usage well, use it when rufus is at distance, shooting at you, "bait" the bullets into the shield, so they get reflected, and as they are reflected with their travel time they hit him while he reloads and is vulnerable, pressuring him, giving you a good opening, and usually full ATBs, take a little bit of practice to time it correctly, but it is not too tough to learn i would say (combined with HP absorb it is even nicer, giving you some free healing), obviously you got to adapt when the doggo comes in, and mostly focus it until there is only rufus left. Edit: on second thought - it could be fun to do, i think i will try to go for it tomorrow, what could go wrong?
Still haven't beaten this lunatic, but Gordon Shield did get me as far as Darkstar, which is good progress. However pairing Enemy Skill with HP Absorb is not giving me an ounce of HP. I saw your video and see it working for you, I wonder what I'm missing. I could have struggled through the fight and beaten him eventually but ran out of MP to heal
My problem is my materia setup goes back to before the battle everytime I retry this battle so I need to resetup my materia lineup again Edit: you can rearrange your materia by pressing the square button while still in cutscene
Great guide, but I found that Plasma Discharge gives you a lot more benefits than haste. Plasma discharge will pressure him when you block his attacks and it gives you an atb bar, which happens quite a lot. You can easily double the amount of times you pressure him with it.

It was much less frustrating not resetting everything, and only took a couple more tries. I ditched haste though. Although he blocks consistently I found atb built quick enough, you can basically make him immobile whilst building atb. It gave me something less to worry about and more time for chakra and regen. Gilgamesh at the end was a brilliant help, I just hadn't been getting that far before.
It’s an accessory you get from doing side. Quest and using the item synthesizer. It’s called the expditionary medal :) gives you lv3 limit at start of fight There’s the base version of it before upgrading that gives you the lv2 limit :)
getting slightly irritated with these videos of people having items theyd get from from chadley brutal and legendary challenges. If people already have those items, they definitely wouldnt need a help with this fight. my only gripe with this fight is that in remake you could instant stagger with braver and blade beam hitting at any point where in rebirth it only works with braver which is much shorter range and if you dont do it at the exact precise time otherwise he counters anyways and still knocks you on your ass.
If you want to build atb as well and are good enough with your dodge canceling, you can also press circle and after every cartwheel cloud does, you can then mash 2 or 3 times on square and cloud will shoot projectiles at rufus. These do zero damage BUT they count as hits and will build you atb slowly but surely. More importantly they put Rufus in a block animation and so long as you keep up the pressure with these attacks he wont stop blocking so you can lock him in place and build 2 atb bars before easing off and letting him go back on the offensive.
Instead of using triple slash to close the distance, you can dodge to pressure him with your ranged attack then use mug to close the distance. It'll refund atb so you can use focused thrust for more stagger damage. Even more if you have plasma discharge on too.
I didn’t realize you can access the menu with square for the fight. It made a difference but I am still losing at the moment. I realized if you aren’t fully healed before the start of the fight if you took a lot of damage with the Turks you can also heal yourself in this menu. Annoying thing is having to do this every single time. Wish the menu changes were permanent
@@RansomRath you have to hold square when the Turks cut scene starts after you beat them until the circle is complete then skip the cut scene after that it’s in the lower left corner of the screen
I was loving chapter 12 and this game as a whole but my god they just sprinkled in some of the worst things I’ve ever done in any game in a masterpiece like this it literally took me out of the story for how much I was raging during this fight I literally had to take a break why did they have to put stuff like this in this perfect game
Came here to see if I wanted to hard mode in this game or not after beating Rufus on normal difficulty. Find out that it literally is what I ended up figuring out myself and ain''t no way am I gonna do that on hard mode, was annoying enough on normal as it is even with item usage in the mix.
I think everyone has a love hate relationship with this game, and it’s so bipolar it can go from love to absolute hate the ever living fuck out of this game and the devs and their moms for making putting in some of the most bullshit mechanics and boss fights that are almost certainly there just to piss us off

Wasn’t bad after I changed things up. Used sleek saber with 2x atb 2x attack up heal plus magic efficiency healing healing plus swift cast. Sleek saber raises atb so fast that once you triple attack him and then pressure him you’ll gain your full bar back. With a full mp and no mp plus you can still do 10 curagas which is more than you need for the fight. I didn’t block anything I just dodged him and did triple attack when he was about to do a special move. I occasionally atb boosted. Level 3 limit once the dog comes out he dies pretty quickly after that. I initially didn’t have mp but I think swiftcast cure is key to staying alive if you’re not good at blocking like me so if you’re struggling and have no mp it’s worth restarting the other fights all over. Enhanced expeditionary medal also key for level 3 limit once the dog comes out. Limit must be saved for dog. Sleek sabers fast atb generation will get you multiple bravers during stagger before dog comes out
For me the plasma discharge made the difference, however, did focus darkstar with my limit break and that caught shines in the blast at the beginning and pressured both. From there I staggered darkstar and did infinity edge and killed him making Rufus alone again. From there it was way easier again and just had to wait Rufus out a bit to use chakra while perfect blocking and finally made my move to take him down 😭
I can get to phase 2 regularly but whenever I stagger Darkstar Rufus just constantly attacks me and I can't kill him before stagger runs out. He's usually left with around 50% health. It's infuriating lol.
The amount of BS they sprinkled into certain fights from this point on totally killed my enjoyment of the game. I was so over the game after this, I genuinely came to hate the game when I beat it
It's only really the fights that are back to back to back where you have to crazy conserve MP. If we got any decent form of MP recovery, it'd be a nice challenge. Still, it's a bit BS that we get 3 boss fights in a row in ch 11, then 3 normal fights and 3 boss fights back to back in ch 12 with nearly no way of getting MP back.
When he uses “think fast”, you can use Focus Thrust to pressure him. It has the added benefit of pushing cloud forward out of the range of his AOE. Also if you use plasma discharge from enemy skill, the lightning blast can pressure him if it goes off during a perfect block.
I must thank you for the guide. I didn’t use Haste at all, but Chakra got me out of many sticky situations. As for the fight itself at all… I’ll never do it again. Not on Hard mode, definitely. It’s poorly designed and its artificial difficulty is raised exponentially for no other reason than “it’s Hard Mode”. I just wish they dialed it down with the back to back boss fights in this game. And I know Chapter 13 has, if memory serves, Turks, a Dragon and a Wall
Phase 1 worked fine after a bit of practice great guide. Where I"m stuck is I don't have the enhanced expeditionary level (just the normal one which doesn't give the 3rd limit break) and therefore get stuck on the phase with the dog. Any advice for folks in this situation or should I just start chapter 12 over and farm for it? :/
If anyone wants the answer to this, it's just "get good". If you're smarter unlike me, just buy the lustrous feather and upgrade the expeditionary medal. If you're not, you just get really good at dodging this guy and can get greedier with hits after the triple attack to stagger him earlier that should set you up for some summon/limit break combos to take down the dog...but you do actually have to learn the dog phase which isn't fun.
here’s a tip: after a reload rufus only has 8 shots total (including named attacks and his movement), he’s very reactionary but keeping tracks of how many shots he has will help tremendously when timing your counter attacks, he can reload before he runs out of shots, but generally after his special moves you can counter attack with good timing~ thanks bye
how do you say the "easiest way to beat rufus" and not mention staying close and using braver to INSTANTLY stagger him lol also darkstar pressures INSTANTLY whenever you use triple slash on darkstar lol how are you telling people how to beat this fight without mentioning these primary damage dealing methods

So...+50 defence from weapon choice but -30 defence from armlet choice in exchange for 2 materia slots. And -50 defence for getting limit level 3, instead of karmic cowl. I'm interested and giving it a try, but its interesting seeing a different approach to survivability than I was trying.
Gilgamesh goes crazy in this fight. Scratch that, he goes crazy in every fight. That mfer does some crazy damage with pinwheel even on virtual sephiroth.

You can focused strike or triple slash before he uses any moves, during their start up, as soon as you see the name of it appear, go for it. If you can get a focused thrust in, he stays pressured for longer, too.

Usually when i finally get passed a extremely difficult part, i am relieved and happy but others seem to just hate the entire game for it. We are cut from different parts of the cloud.

The real issue is you can’t recover mp in hard mode. Just started hard mode and jump directly to chapter 12 for dating Tifa. After finished the first 4 brutal challenges and I decided to go back main quest. At this moment, my mp are very low. I managed to beat Turks without healing, but this guy! How can I recover my mp in hard mode?
The only way is using the MP absorb materia, if you link it to any of your magic materia you will recover up to 0.3% of the damage dealt and if you want more you can use it with also magnify ( you will need 2x the magic materia i.e 2x fire materia one for magnify and the other for MP absorb) you won’t have any issues for the rest of the game :) fire on all monsters with give you back MP for every hit! ( and for sure you can swap fire for any magic materia like ice and wind)
I hate this boss, his design SUCKS! Hard mode is total BS compared to remake. I honestly dont know why im doing this the platinum trophy isnt worth it. I broke a controller just getting johnny hotel trophy. I actually do HATE this game
Hard mode is super easy outside of VR missions. The platinum wasn’t hard and was just time consuming. Their are plenty of strategies online that even trivialize the VR missions if you have maxed out materia
Doing Rufus hard mode, he's restless tried to restart the fight like I normally would "start-up-x" it warped me back to Elana and Rude little pissed. Not being able to save before Rufus is dumb.
@@reginaldledan I know it was there , the majority of the other fights only have that one option. Imagine being frustrated at how ridiculous Rufus hard fight is so you try to restart the fight quickly. Only to be punished more. There needs to be a save option while your in the menu changing materia and sub menu selection "are you sure? Confirmation" I stopped playing it for now I'm so tired of being punished in this game for dumb things.
Having just beat him I would say to set up the Rufus fight before you fight the Turks . Otherwise it’s a pain to redo the whole build every time you fight him. I only changed like two materias in the menu before the Rufus fight.
You can do it! During the cutscene when Rufus arrives, the square button appears on the lower left side. Keep holding it and it will take you to the menu once the cutscene is over.
The combat system in ff7rm and rebirth is shit as hell... This guide isn't helpfull at all. The rm series are the worst ff there is when it comes to systems or story telling. Music, voice actors, grafics, scenery, general menues all realy good, but still mayor shit things...
It's OK to be bad at a game. It's also OK for it to not be the game's fault but your own. This game requires skill. If you don't build it, you'll struggle. It's just one of those games. Insanely fun once you actually learn what you're doing.

This guy gave me more trouble on dynamic difficulty than any other main story boss and I'm not looking forward to seeing him on hardmode.
Took my like 6 tries but this strat along with some other strats in the comments helped out quite a bit!

Sleek Saber finally won me this, was using others previously,. But the the two ATB charge rates on sleek saber made the difference in this fight.

It’s a shame you’re letting one difficult HARD mode fight make you hate the whole game. Stop being so dramatic.
In remake you could use stop to freeze him in place while you let loose.
They need to patch this up rufus is just too aggressive, i'm stuck at the moment in this fight (hard mode).

I lost count how many times I died to Rufus I just don’t have the patience for this fight on hard mode
Usually when i finally get passed a extremely difficult part, i am relieved and happy but others seem to just hate the entire game for it. We are cut from different parts of the cloud.

Guys bring Odin and run out his clock second phase for some reason he kills my Rufus everytime hard mode and dynamic this has happened
I used counter strike whenever he went for a close range shot. One Counter Strike will pressurs him and give you time to heal with Chakra

You should mention that if you braver rufus afrer he uses that uppercut attack, it automatically staggers him.
The real issue is you can’t recover mp in hard mode. Just started hard mode and jump directly to chapter 12 for dating Tifa. After finished the first 4 brutal challenges and I decided to go back main quest. At this moment, my mp are very low. I managed to beat Turks without healing, but this guy! How can I recover my mp in hard mode?
The only way is using the MP absorb materia, if you link it to any of your magic materia you will recover up to 0.3% of the damage dealt and if you want more you can use it with also magnify ( you will need 2x the magic materia i.e 2x fire materia one for magnify and the other for MP absorb) you won’t have any issues for the rest of the game :) fire on all monsters with give you back MP for every hit! ( and for sure you can swap fire for any magic materia like ice and wind)

I hate this boss, his design SUCKS! Hard mode is total BS compared to remake. I honestly dont know why im doing this the platinum trophy isnt worth it. I broke a controller just getting johnny hotel trophy. I actually do HATE this game
Hard mode is super easy outside of VR missions. The platinum wasn’t hard and was just time consuming. Their are plenty of strategies online that even trivialize the VR missions if you have maxed out materia

Doing Rufus hard mode, he's restless tried to restart the fight like I normally would "start-up-x" it warped me back to Elana and Rude little pissed.
Not being able to save before Rufus is dumb.

I think you hit the wrong button. You can just retry from THIS battle versus retry from LAST battle to only vs. Rufus.

Imagine being frustrated at how ridiculous Rufus hard fight is so you try to restart the fight quickly. Only to be punished more. There needs to be a save option while your in the menu changing materia and sub menu selection "are you sure? Confirmation" I stopped playing it for now I'm so tired of being punished in this game for dumb things.
So is this the same build you’re using to beat the Turks before this?
Having just beat him I would say to set up the Rufus fight before you fight the Turks . Otherwise it’s a pain to redo the whole build every time you fight him. I only changed like two materias in the menu before the Rufus fight.

You can do it! During the cutscene when Rufus arrives, the square button appears on the lower left side. Keep holding it and it will take you to the menu once the cutscene is over.
Bruh just hold square during the cutscene. Don't get annoyed at something you claim you can't do when you can.

The combat system in ff7rm and rebirth is shit as hell... This guide isn't helpfull at all. The rm series are the worst ff there is when it comes to systems or story telling. Music, voice actors, grafics, scenery, general menues all realy good, but still mayor shit things...

It's OK to be bad at a game. It's also OK for it to not be the game's fault but your own. This game requires skill. If you don't build it, you'll struggle. It's just one of those games. Insanely fun once you actually learn what you're doing.
i playing on dynamic, but i switched to easy for Odin + Alexander & Gilgamesh fight 😅 too hard for me. After this 2 fights, i switched back to dynamic
