I try to always bring water and Gatorade and a high calorie sealed snack. I've spent a night in the mangroves in a storm and small things like that can save your butt...
Lanyards, leashes and dry boxes/bags. Landing net, fish grips and a kill spike or club. Anchor or stakeout pole and some items to treat fish hook wounds. Was that Dubois?
Your list is spot on and way to go advocating for PFD use. I am a Paramedic and have lost count of how many drownings I have ran over the years involving fishermen. I have seen it happen in everything from a small farm pond to a large lake.
I think one thing that I have learned from kayak fishing is knowing the body of water your going to be fishing in. If you are familiar with the waters along with all other safety measures you may be less likely to make a fatal mistake. If I’m unsure of a like or River I ask around about spots to avoid or be cautious in before I set out. Knowing where you are and what’s around you is always an advantage. Also being aware of other boaters. I can’t say how many times I’ve been completely looked over by bigger boats and been toppled over by wakes and not even be close to them. Keep that head on a swivel guys. Have fun and stay safe!
outstanding info!! I still over load....sigh. And i wear my PFD in skinny water, it doesnt take much if your face down. And my PFD is part of my tackle management system. And my next yak will have that lawn chair style seat....and i concur, yak fishing is very exciting and habit forming...hope this storm doesnt mess yalls fishing up...
Great info , here in Texas PFD are mandatory. Buy one that’s comfortable and fits correct. Because if it’s un comfortable you won’t wear it ...fact. I wear a manual inflatable type ...light weight , cooler and less restrictive when fishing . Set the hook brother
In my state you have to have one live vest per person on all boat types. Our rules and regulations are set by the US Coastguard standards. I was told by a game warden that it is the minimum requirements for all states. My advice is to check your state's rules and regulations before you get on the water. I definitely recommend a set on kayak for fishing. I have a Nucanoe F10(Frontier ten feet) it's a very stable kayak I can stand on it and throw a cast net from it. The kayak cost around 1000 and you can customize it Nucanoe has many options. Very good informational video 5 stars!
I watch you, Lojo, Kicking and Norm. But you have fastly become my fav. Not only do you catch fish you learn something ever time. The others are good but not as informed as they use to be. Thank you for keeping it real. 💯🔥👊
Thanks for the tips. As far as new kayakers and PFD's go, get fitted properly for your PFD. And these fishing kayaks most have a higher back seats, make sure the PFD sits comfortably on your back. That could make or break a full day of fishing. Also check your states law on PFD's. Texas requires all watercraft to have at least a PFD on board your vessel. Best wishes, and tight lines everyone.
The belt style PFDs are pretty nice.. super low profile, doesnt get in the way or restrict movement, etc. I snagged an Onyx m16 for less than 60 bucks. Pull the cord.. Boom.. almost instant PFD.. For rough salt water conditions maybe you might want something a little more legit, but for most freshwater situations id say you are good.
New subscribers here from Trail Trash Outdoors! Just recently purchased our first kayaks and love it! Went fishing for the first time from it the other day and man was it a blast! Didnt catch anything but it sure was better than being inside! Much love new friend-TTO Really sweet kayak man I bet the ticket is pretty nice too!
You're the 2nd person I've seen that reviewed the Old town top water 120 PDL and loved it. Like you, I originally purchased a semi cheap starter yak. I think I'm going to have to get me of of those top water 120's though. Not having to worry about a paddle gives you so much more time to fish.. and you can cover so much more water with that PDL system. Great video, great review. Keep up the great work brotha.
I prefer sit ins kayaks over sit on tops because sit ins look nicer in my opinion plus they offer protection from the sun on my legs plenty of room for me to set the hook but I'm fishing mostly for bass and trout on small ponds and rivers good video
Try using a left handed reel as a right handed person. Controlling the Rod with your dominant hand feels much more natural once you give it a chance. Try it and you won't go back.
@@FishingWithYakPak NICE ! Wish more fishermen would figure this one out. Maybe you can be the left hand reel ambassador to all the RUclips fishermen who insist on doing it the wrong way lol.
After buying my feelfree lure 11.5 the biggest thing I've learned is try things at your own pace. slowly get familiar with your kayak every inch of it what you feel comfortable doing on it. how much weight you feel comfortable having in it, and that kind of thing. Slowly work your skill set up. for instance I don't feel comfortable standing for too long of a period of time or casting to much quite yet I'm a bigger guy and even though my kayak is very stable I haven't reached a level of comfortability yet where I feel like standing all the time on my kayak so I start by just standing up and not trying to cast and then I slowly got now where I can stand up and cast and eventually I'll get to where I can stand up and cast and paddle around and move around while standing I'm just not quite there yet so little by little don't try to do too much too soon.
Good tips. I just started fishing on my kayak and i need to be more organized. But the important thing is that i do carry my life jacket on my kayak at all times.
ALWAYS take a portable AIR HORN . Most states require a safety Whistle BUT the loud roar of a power boat's motor often will drown out a Whistle sound. An AIR HORN IS MADE TO BE HEARD OVER DISTANCE. That extra distance can be the only thing between you and a speeding boat. Also be certain to quick test it regularly for air and sound. I keep mine in my PFD in case I'm needing it while in the water. I'm a former Police Dispatcher, Hope this info helps.
Use a milk crate and 3700 sized tackle trays. It’s quick and easy access while keeping everything secure. Always have plenty of water. And GET AN ANCHOR. It’ll save you headaches with currents or winds.
Thanks tons I like the big fish 120. Thinking about giving it. Ruder to pedals. Have Gramin 4.5” fish finder. Wish to buy Yak Gadget trolling motor mount . From Saturn boat get $129.00 trolling mount. 55 lbs thrust . Anchor wizard a light strong paddle. Please let me know your thoughts Brest video
i just got a kayak and went bridge fishing in our channel, i can literately get on the kayak, leave our canal, and go up the channel about maybe 50 feet up to the bridge, then i catch the mangrove crabs and fish with em, its a sit on top.
Jupiter as in Jupiter Florida ? If so I live right down the street from there lol . Great video with some good tips . I’m currently doing some research in getting a fishing kayak . I had a jon boat wasn’t really for me . I’m currently interested in a hobie outback , hobie lynx , and the old town pdl 106/ 120 . Any tips pro / cons of each ?
Sun shade. Proper full coverage clothing. I sun burned badly one day level 3 wearing shorts from my knees down and the tops of my feet thrue the mesh on my aqua shoes.
Yeah man good advice. I fish bare minimum one rod I have been fishing all of my life so I have things norrowed down by now these kayaks with six rods sticking out of them and so much crap they look like a porcupine on steroids and a floating junkyard I get it each to their own if someone is happy getting on the water with a floating hardware store more power to them...me myself I use tools everyday when I go fishing give me a rod and bait and I am happy.
My advice for a new person looking to buy: try if you can to rent different brands and styles to see what will work best. Don’t go with immediate first affordable, I’m about to upgrade cuz I bought the first one I could afford and now need something different.... Also good idea to think about transportation not from home to the water but from vehicle to water as well
A couple of things to add. You talked about the importance of having a PFD but brushed off the fact that you weren't wearing one because you were only in 2 feet of water. Never go on the water in a kayak without wearing a PFD. Ever! Accidents aren't planned they're unexpected. Plan for the unexpected. Also when considering a kayak storage, weight if the kayak and transportation need to be part of the equation. You can have a big huge kayak with lots of room but if it's too heavy to move it's not going to get used. Finally demo demo demo. Don't buy a new kayak without testing it in the water for a couple of hours.
Do they sell Really Comfortable seats for Kayaks, I want to get one with an electric motor If not I may have to go with a jon/skiff or rowboat My back is not the greatest but plan to fish three or four hours at a time,Fantastic video just subscribed,
Yo loved the video and the spot! Question, if you were paddle only, would that be a kayak you would’ve bought, considering the weight , how it paddles and tracks and how it maneuvers? Let me know what ya think.
I know I'm a bit late and probably not the first to mention this, but ALWAYS wear your PFD! If you hit your head when you go in, you can still drown in 2 feet of water! Most PFD's out there will flip you on your back if you're not moving to ensure you don't drown even when knocked out
I think I might have been in there fishing before. Are you fishing in Jupiter (Intercoastal) around a mile North of PGA Blvd? EDIT: Now that I think about it, it might be just North of Indiantown road.
But also Florida Law says you are to have a PFD in your boat when in use doesn`t matter how deep the water is or what kind of boat your in . And it doesn`t do you any good if it is left in your vehicle . I subbed so i can see what your comment will be . And yes I do have a Kayak it`s a Jackson Big Rig and I love it . # 6 Carry a Flag on a pole so other boaters namely Power Boats can see you better .
yussacyong honestly, something that you feel comfortable in. Brand X may make the best kayak know to man for beginners, but you may hate the way it rides/feels when you sit/etc..
1. I needed a wider kayak, falling out of skinny kayaks is no fun getting back in if I could at all as a fat man. 2. I keep it simple, and see no need for 12 poles. 3. video came hard to follow.

Super helpful, looking into getting a kayak unfortunately I want the one lojo has so....yeah...lol $$$....its coming though!....question: do you know how I can get the fishing tag measuring aperatice without Instagram? I've tried from the app but can't figure it out...
Best advice was keeping it simple. You dont need 6 poles and 5 tackle boxes with every piece of kit you own! Skip all the add on accessories.... they just become snag points on the yak.
PFD most important I always wear it now since I flipped my yak if it wasn’t for the guy I was going to help with pliers to get the hook out I wouldn’t be here today to watch the awesome videos I had to hold on to his kayak so he could bring me to shallow water where I could stand up

I always have a PFD. Also a good idea to keep something like an air horn or a whistle in case you need help. I also do that.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful video, keep doing what you do best, from a space coast subscriber. The best 👍👍👍
Thank you for the info! Watching from Central Texas

I like sit on cause you could stand up if you wanted to and it’s easier to get off and on

Let’s Go Dudes!!!!!
Nice Job what part of Florida are you in.
Would you recommend a small anchor? Or are the generally not needed?
I think in some circumstances it would be beneficial to have one, but I have got by just fine without having one.
Make a system, in the pilot world we call it building your nest. Put everything and cockpit setup the same everytime.
I think I might have been in there fishing before. Are you fishing in Jupiter (Intercoastal) around a mile North of PGA Blvd?
EDIT: Now that I think about it, it might be just North of Indiantown road.
Hey man i was just wanting to know what saltwater setup You use??
But also Florida Law says you are to have a PFD in your boat when in use doesn`t matter how deep the water is or what kind of boat your in . And it doesn`t do you any good if it is left in your vehicle . I subbed so i can see what your comment will be . And yes I do have a Kayak it`s a Jackson Big Rig and I love it . # 6 Carry a Flag on a pole so other boaters namely Power Boats can see you better .
Love that tip! The flag & pole to keep you visible to big boats is a definite must have!
What's a good starter kayak for beginners angler
yussacyong honestly, something that you feel comfortable in.
I am looking for a kayak I can go fishing with my son on, my budget is not huge but I want a kayak that is reliable. What do you recommend??
does water come into your boat from where PDL is when pedaling?
Nope It sure doesn’t.
My brain always ruins those shots where they leave the camera behind like I think about how they cut the footage and have to walk back to get the camera like that shit ain’t Thor’s hammer bro

Thank you it all helps don’t pay attention to ppl
good job, nice day in the shallows for you (and your viewers :)

i jsut dont got 1200 to drop on a yak..
PFD most important I always wear it now since I flipped my yak if it wasn’t for the guy I was going to help with pliers to get the hook out I wouldn’t be here today to watch the awesome videos I had to hold on to his kayak so he could bring me to shallow water where I could stand up

I miss these style videos from you man.
Always bring your paddle no matter how your kayak is powered (pedal, troller motor etc.) if your drive system fails, you’ll need ol’reliable
The bag of raw prawns just sitting there shows me your fishing a long way from Australia
Can I use kayak for the fishing on the sea?
One thing, Keys and phone put in a zip lock bag (2) with something very buoyant!
I really really hope that you warned those kids swimming in the water behind you, that there was a shark in the water. Good video.
