I haven’t even bought a kayak yet, bu have watched two videos by Dan and his truly professional willingness to help is a rare commodity in any sales business. I have learned a lot and if I still lived in CA (TX now) I wouldn’t hesitate to buy all gear from him.
I so wish there was someone this knowledgeable here in Wisconsin. Pretty much stuck with box stores and young sales people who have no clue what they are telling us. These videos have helped me so much.
This is the first video I came upon while looking for info for kayak paddles. I don't need to look anywhere else now thanks to you. You answered all my questions. Thank you so much.
First I did not get bored at this at all. I thought this was a great information video. me being new to kayak fishing and to RUclips I thought this was amazing I really do appreciate this video keep up the good work Chris. I'm glad magic yakker introduced me to you.
Dan is hands down the best person to talk to about this.. he runs such a great shop with great people. - Looking forward to being there on Tuesday for the rudder install. This vid was great!
Wish I had a good kayak shop around me. I researched for months before upgrading my kayak and paddle. So in love with my choice, a perception carolina 12 with a aqua bound sting ray paddle. I wanted speed to really be able to explore everywhere I go. The closest lake to me I was happy with myself on a recreational kayak to do a lap around. I did three today and wasn't nearly as exhausted as the one would get me. Thanks for the info. I've been kayaking for over a decade and am excited to take my first class to learn how to roll =)
Suggestion: Try/test an Inuit paddle. They are long with very slender blades. After watching an old documentary on Inuit culture and kayaks, I wondered why they always seemed to have the same paddle style. So I made one, of red cedar, to try/test in my fishing kayak. I will NEVER go back to "modern" style paddles. Inuit style paddles are superior in every way, (and much easier on the shoulders). Since the Inuit people invented the kayak (over 4,000 years ago) and their lives depended on their design/build... Maybe they knew what they were doing with their paddle design too?
Two mysteries of kayaking: The surf ski race (they were just inside the Golden Gate on the Mendicino side heading in, about 2006 or 07) where the guy coasting passes the guy paddling away. I wish I'd bookmarked the clip-- once you realize what's going on it makes absolutely no sense--and yet.... The second is seeing a kayak class taught for years and everyone including the instructors are paddling only with their shoulders.... When I'm coming back in and I'm exhausted and I see young new kayakers, I force myself to carefully shape up and paddle correctly. Those kids see me and figure I must know what I'm doing...so I'd better be doing it as good as I know how. The heavy cheap paddle... great as a back up paddle on the deck. (Newbs might not fully realize why you should always have a second paddle under the deck bungees. You're solo and you get dumped. Now you, your paddle and your kayak are in the water but not in arm's reach. The wind is blowing your kayak in one direction, the current is pushing your paddle in another direction, and you have to decide, do I go after the paddle or the kayak? With a spare on your kayak, you always go for the kayak. Now you won't be in the ocean with a paddle and no boat or boat and no paddle. I've swum-paddled but I wouldn't claim it's a proven rescue technique.) I've got a couple of Werner's, they are indestructible. Both about 13 years old, probably a couple of thousand hours on my Camano, less on my other one. The edges have a few nicks. The connecting mechanism has jammed up--salt, dirt. My advice, every season or so spend a couple of hours cleaning out all the crevices, maybe quirt in some lithium grease or whatever Werner recommends... I've had them jam a couple of times, not close properly a couple of times. Every time, I never found out what the problem was, but after cleaning and fussy, they worked. If I found a Werner paddle at a yard sale and it wouldn't connect together or the button wouldn't work--I'd buy it on the spot. Paddle form? Always work on your stroke. I spent the first year? paddling by lifting up water at the end of my stroke. I lifted a significant percentage of the Pacific Ocean for absolutely no reason. (I did get super strong abs). Then I took a stroke class with Jen Keck, Aqua Adventures. I was the only one in the class rotating, my rotation didn't have a lot to do with my paddle... She tuned me up. A year later I took the class again. What are you doing here? My stroke was pretty good, but there's always room for improvement. If you start out learning a really good stroke, it's better than having the best paddle or the best kayak. A more buoyant paddle. Huh. Learned something new. I'd really like to try that. And the simplest way to tune-up your stroke is to do some Frankenstein: arms straight out, elbows locked, now you can't paddle unless you rotate your torso. When you return to your elbows bent stroke you want to keep that torso rotation. and if I'm full of it on any of this... set me straight. See you on the water.
Some nice advice there. As a newbie the various paddles designs looked like a nightmare to figure out. Now I feel educated in this field and ready to make an informed decision. Thanks for sharing 🛶
Definitely a great introduction! I have a sting Ray and manta ray that I live. Might’ve gone a bit more up the food chain had I seen this first! But on the budget side, I’ve been super impressed with the Quest Vapor at $80. It’s solid, flexible sizing, comfortable…it’s my daughter’s and she likes it better than mine which cost twice as much. What impressed me the most is the lack of rattling when shaken. A lot of cheaper paddles rattle and that means energy is lost on each stroke. Same with flexing paddle heads. Energy spent overcoming the flex is energy not going into propulsion. And as was mentioned, rigidity helps with steering. I’m gunning for a good list of gear at different price points. Frankly, the Vapor at $80 brings more contentment than some of the pricier bits. Also for a data point. My yak is 28” wide as I recall. I sit low and stand at a “towering” 5’7”…210-215 cm seems to be my best length. A little short by your comments, but I bury the whole paddle head so I think it’s okay. Good stuff, gentlemen!
This is a very good video with very good info. one thing about paddle blade size and shape. the long thin blade is more for a low angle style paddling and the wider shorter paddle is more for a higher angle paddle style. Most and not all, everyone has their own style of paddling but touring kayak are narrower and place the paddler lower in the water requiring a shorter length paddle and more of a lower angle paddle stroke. Sit on top kayaks are wider and place the kayaker higher out of the water requiring a longer paddle length and promoting a higher paddle angle. With the lower angle a long narrow blade tends to work better you get more of the blade in the water where a wide blade would still have the top portion above the water. With the higher angle you are able to get the wider blade under the water completely.
Just to clarify, pro baseball players don’t grip a baseball bat tightly. It’s a very loose grip on the bat. That’s one reason bats go flying every once in a while. And this video was downright awesome! Thanks for all the fantastic information related to kayak paddles. I really think I would like that Werner with the bent handle to relax the wrists.
I sure wish I had a paddle/sup/kayak shop like this near me! Very informative! (I bought a paddle long before I bought my first SUP; rented, but used my own paddle. I agree completely; invest in a really good paddle, and get a little coaching early on. You will get much more out of each hour that you are on the water. (Werner foam core... love, love , love...)
I wish I lived close to this guys shop. When you love something it shows and makes all the difference because your heart is it. Puts the best kayak shop in my local area to shame. That was a great video... thanks for the education.
This is a great video, Dan, if you read this, your experience and offer to help is a major plus for anyone looking into kayaking! Even though I'm not into it, I want to thank you for your offer to help and your time helping Chris out!! We all know he loves to Kayak fish! : ) Now get him to go out with you one day and you can 'help' him out!!
Hey Chris great vid on a great topic. Dan is so right on about paddles I tell people the same things all the time. A paddle can make or break you it is the most hands on piece of gear a kayaker has. I was lucky that I had enough time on the water before buying my first to know what I did not want. What Dan said about taking a class is the first thing anyone should do right after playing a kayak if you have not already. I see it all the time paddle with friends, groups or just watching RUclips vids. Just because you get the boat to move does not mean you know how to paddle. Its a nite and day difference knowing how to paddling the properly.
Totally true... I catch myself all the time practicing poor technique and have to really focus on paddling properly, mostly because I wasn't concerned about it right off the bat. Thanks for watching!
I'm buying my first kayak for recreational river use ( to start). I found your information very valuable and easy to follow. Sad I can't get it from you because of the distance between us. Appreciate you taking the time to explain everything in such detail. Thanks again
@@Outwestwithchris1 I bought an intex. At 71, not planning on going hard. However, when lake is glass and it gets windy, it's a whole different scenario. I have the cheap oars that came with the Intex challenger 1. I was caught in sudden change from calm to a bit rough. I never worked as hard trying to get back to shore from the other side of Turquoise Lake this weekend. I have an excellent life jacket! I kept calm after realizing this nubie didn't realize how rowing is important. I watched a video prior to kayaking. Very helpful. I just wish I were younger to handle good quality kayaks. Anyhoo, still fun to go to Chatfield and paddle around. Interesting video. Who knew there are so many paddles out there!
I expected pretty dry content (nopun) but this was VERY informational and well done. Doing my research before buying my first kayak and this was very helpful. Thank you!
Really good info here. Especially the importance of length and the benefits of better materials, As a tradesman this correlates as better tools make for better quality of life while working. Get more done in less time with less mental and physical drain. I can totally see the value in that 400 dollar paddle. Especially over time and if you ever got into a bad situation and had to paddle for your life. As someone getting into kayaks specifically for ocean spearfishing, that's a reality that must be acknowledged. Thanks for taking the time. I wish I had a local shop with this knowledge and passion.
Great video Chris. Saw it many months ago and just rewatched it. Dan loves what he does and it shows. Thanks for the most informative paddle video I’ve seen. Helps with decision making. Good boating and fishing to you!🎣
Chris, Thanks for the advice & suggestions at the end of the video. I have bought a couple of kayaks from Academy Sports Out doors, I think it is important to know what your getting. What your trying to say is go with professional experience people with kayaks. & yes that makes a difference to me. Get comfortable with the staff & start asking your questions.
I recently won a kayak from a chain of gas stations in Michigan... buy stuff get entries type of deal ... totally did not expect it ... it's a ultralight Riot intrigue with the see through bottom ... it came with a vest a very cheap paddle... this is really great info.. I now have a little better knowledge on where to start with upgrading... thanx guys!!
Excellent shop, I live as far south as you can get in California and made the trek to see Dan. Picked up an Eddyline and would like more boats in the future. Next time I’ll stick around long enough to get in the water. Im happy with the mid swift, but I’d love to try a Werner carbon bent shaft.
This is a year old video but want to say thanks for the information. Its nice to run into some "real" guys who get what its like to be somewhat new, self-taught and loving the sport.
This video is solid gold and the reason I have subscribed to both your channel and that of Dan at Headwaters. I'm looking to learn in order to avoid buying items 2 and 3 times before getting things right. Cheers
Thanks for watching Jim. My recommendations if you are going to purchase are 1) Test paddle the kayaks you are interested in 2) don't skimp on the paddle!
Great informative video. I bought my first paddle 26 years ago at Bass Pro Shops. It was a perception sea passage. It is bullet proof and I still use it as my spair. I paddle touring kayaks and like a longer paddle with thiner blades. When Im fishing I use to perception paddle. I built a cedar strip touring kayak 18 years ago and bought a bending branches wooden paddle. It has long narrow blades but is light weight compaired to the perception. I may have to try the one with the lighter shaft material and wood blades. I was glad you mentioned paddling form. If your form and techneque are good you can go all day. I go touring alot here in the Mo. Ozarks in our lakes. I usually cover 20 to 25 miles a day with 40lbs of camping gear, food and close combined. Thanks again and sorry for rambling. Good gear, good tech. and proper instruction can mean the difference in a good experiance or a great one.
Great Video! Dan explained the difference in paddles when I bought my Lure 11.5 from him, but I had too many questions and couldn't remember everything he had to teachers . I'm glad you picked his brain and had a great lesson on paddles to share with us all!
After 10++ years of owning a Werner bent shaft which weighs next to nothing, it started to leak where the paddle itself meets the shaft. Called Werner, they had me drop it off at the local kayak shop that sells their stuff and in 3 weeks, i thought i had a brand spanking new paddle yet they stated they refurbished it as the model has been changed as a few DID leak and they even offered to trade the old one for a new one for no cost?!?! I asked if they would refurbish it in another 10 years and they said YES!!! I kept the old and loved paddle =) This really IS a great video as the paddle matters SO much!! I try to tell newcomers to upgrade their paddles and allow SOME to try one of mine... after using one of mine they tend to sulk knowing some are over $400 BUT... I have a fantastic $130 paddle that seems to be that great price to performance for many weekend paddlers. Thanks for the video!
Total newbie to paddle sports, I have an inflatable Kayak from decathlon UK which is great for lakes and flat water, my girlfriend just got a similar one but the paddle is absolutely crap! Heavy and symmetrical on all sides and faces so it's not at all efficient. She is looking to get a different one ASAP but I feel she's maybe looking for something lighter absolutely rather than the weight being where it needs to be. This was such a great video to introduce me to the benefits and nuances of different paddles. Thanks!
Originally I was going to get a cheap feelfree paddle but after watching this I went with an Aqua Bound Tango. Got one for my wife too! They are super light and the graphics are awesome.
Thank you so much. I have learned so much from this vid. I've been looking for the "perfect" kayak and there are so many choices. Thanks for a precise explanation. At least I know what kind of paddle I think I'll want.
Very informative ... thanks. Just about to buy my second fishing yak here in Australia. I have a sit on but am now getting a sit in that will handle small rapids. Cheers
Thank you for an informative video. I am just a newbie living in the desert. We have lots of lakes. Now to learn how to transport a real kayak to the lake with a Mini Cooper!
What a great informative video about paddles, I have an Ascend 9R Sport Kayak and bought a used paddle from the local marine shop and i am very happy 😃 with the results but there is so many lengths and shapes that I was very confused 🤷♂️ thanks so much and I already subscribed
Good intro to paddles. I learned quite a bit. I was starting to get ready to complain that Dan didn't address paddle length, but then he did at the end and all is good. I used to live in SJ, but I probably won't be visiting your shop since I now live on the other west coast (Tampa area). I just started kayaking with a used OK Scrambler (pre 2005 model) and the horrible paddle that came with it (2-piece noname aluminum with two halves unable to be separated. Your intro to paddles is greatly appreciated. Nice thing about this area is that kayaking is pretty much year 'round, especially on the spring fed rivers (72 deg F water).
I wish I had seen this video before I bought my paddle. I did buy a better paddle but probably not what I really need. Thank you for the awesome video.
Dan. You wouldn't happen to have any kayak shops in Texas? I don't live in California. The video is very helpful. There's an awful lot that I never really thought too much about. Interesting.
Excellent information! I am new to the sport, and will be competing in the MR340 this year (the worlds longest non-stop paddle race - 340 miles down the Missouri River, from Kansas City to St. Charles MO), and this video helped me to choose the right paddle with confidence. Thank you!
I love hearing Dan explain things. He is so talented and knowledgeable
I haven’t even bought a kayak yet, bu have watched two videos by Dan and his truly professional willingness to help is a rare commodity in any sales business. I have learned a lot and if I still lived in CA (TX now) I wouldn’t hesitate to buy all gear from him.
Yeah he should open a shop here in ATX.
Great video - Lots of really very useful info , easy to understand and interesting. Thank so much!

Zellers in Green Bay is awesome
What about Rutabaga in Madison?
This is the first video I came upon while looking for info for kayak paddles. I don't need to look anywhere else now thanks to you. You answered all my questions. Thank you so much.

Awesome man glad you found it helpful.
I generally dislike these types of videos but there is some real useful information here.
Thanks for the Video Chris. Stoked to help get good info out there for kayak fisherman.
Thank you for your help man. Let's do it again soon!
Headwaters Kayak I

Yankee Tanker Outdoors look forward to the visit!
I agree, great kayak shop with a ton of good knowledgable folks working there. Thanks for watching buddy!
bought a fibre shaft with fibre re enforced paddle and worth every dollar. Agree fully nice to have a shop to try out gear.. Be safe and fish on.
Thanks for watching!

They are good people at Headwaters, definitely stop by and say hey.
ace, thanks for the info relayed with true enthusiasm
Almost didn't watch due to length but these guys really know their stuff and it was informative. Thanks.
Thanks for sticking it out!
very helpful information. Great details that i had no idea about.
Thanks to this video, I bought the Werner Kalliste bent shaft. Can't wait to try it.

Excellent shop, I live as far south as you can get in California and made the trek to see Dan. Picked up an Eddyline and would like more boats in the future. Next time I’ll stick around long enough to get in the water. Im happy with the mid swift, but I’d love to try a Werner carbon bent shaft.
Yeah that Werner carbon bent shaft was pretty sweet looking. It was so light as well. Those Eddyline Kayaks look gorgeous, congrats on the purchase.
Really great info indeed!
This is a year old video but want to say thanks for the information. Its nice to run into some "real" guys who get what its like to be somewhat new, self-taught and loving the sport.
Thanks Victor, I've learned a lot over the last few years but I still have a lot to learn! Tight lines!
That’s great man. Glad you found it helpful.
Great video, very informative.
Great video. Fishing from kayak for a couple months now. Great video, good teaching. Keep making videos. I subscribe.
Glad it was helpful!
A very informative video on kayak paddles. That guy knows his stuff.
He sure does, thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info guys. Super helpful.
Yeah man - a light paddle makes a day of kayaking much more enjoyable !
I started with a Manta Ray , quickly evolved to a Sting Ray . Huge difference
Really helpful video for a newbie like me.
Great video. Most useful info on paddles I've seen on You Tube. Dan is THE man!! 👍
Dan is the man! Thanks for watching!
Solid intel Chris! I've been debating ponying up for the paddle I should be using. I think it's time. Thanks for the vid man, adventure on!
Thanks for watching brother, hope all is well.
Great video! Thank you!
Great video packed with lots of information. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
excellent education! really enjoyed and learned a great deal. Thanks!!
I have an Aqua Bound carbon Sting Ray & a Werner Shuna Happy with both .
This video is solid gold and the reason I have subscribed to both your channel and that of Dan at Headwaters. I'm looking to learn in order to avoid buying items 2 and 3 times before getting things right. Cheers
Awesome, thanks for subscribing! Glad the video was helpful!
Wow, tons of great info there! I learned a bunch. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Brian, glad that we could get some useful info out there!
another great video..love how well you guys teach...
Great info. I was definitely about to get a 30$ Magellan paddle. Now got my eyes on a Werner Tybee
This was great information. I am thinking of buying a kayak in the near future and I learned a lot of good info.
Thanks for watching Jim. My recommendations if you are going to purchase are 1) Test paddle the kayaks you are interested in 2) don't skimp on the paddle!
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the comment and for watching, that's really cool that you built your own kayak.
Great Video! Dan explained the difference in paddles when I bought my Lure 11.5 from him, but I had too many questions and couldn't remember everything he had to teachers . I'm glad you picked his brain and had a great lesson on paddles to share with us all!
Thanks for watching Dylan, you can always head back out there and take a lesson or two from the staff to get a refresher course.
i learnt a lot from this video as a newbie i no its an older vid but thank u dude much appreciated
I kept the old and loved paddle =)
This really IS a great video as the paddle matters SO much!! I try to tell newcomers to upgrade their paddles and allow SOME to try one of mine... after using one of mine they tend to sulk knowing some are over $400 BUT... I have a fantastic $130 paddle that seems to be that great price to performance for many weekend paddlers. Thanks for the video!
Great story and great service from Werner!
Good stuff... thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks guys! This was really helpful.
Thanks for watching, glad it helped!
Thanks!
Great information. Lot of help
great rundown as I'm shopping for a paddle
Thanks for watching!
The paddle might be more important than the kayak?? Well I'm just going to get a paddle...see you on the water 🤣🤣
Good point. Lol
He was saying that the paddle quality might be more Important than the kayak quality.
Think about it, which is better an inner tube with a $400 paddle or a $400 Kayak with a paddle with inner tube material for paddle blades?
gg why doesn’t it bother you so
Much?
LOL
I had no idea that Paddles were so expensive.. my kayak cost me $100. Wouldn't make sense to me to have a $250 paddle for a $100 kayak. Great info.
Excellent source of information; classes were very important to me. . .
Very true, thanks for watching!!
Dan needs more air time demonstrating for his fans. . .
well thought out answers; well done.
Thanks for watching!
Originally I was going to get a cheap feelfree paddle but after watching this I went with an Aqua Bound Tango. Got one for my wife too! They are super light and the graphics are awesome.
I've looked at those before and they do look nice!
Thank you so much. I have learned so much from this vid. I've been looking for the "perfect" kayak and there are so many choices. Thanks for a precise explanation. At least I know what kind of paddle I think I'll want.
Great video. I've been kayaking for years and had no idea that there were so many different paddles ... great knowledge. Thank you !!!
M Angel Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info. I just bought my first kayak and I’m researching what paddle to buy. I’m in the Bay Area so I’m going to stop by!
They are a great shop! They are closed for the Holiday but will be open again after the 2nd of January.
That’s awesome! Come by and say what’s up.
What a great info video. Thanks guys might just be worth the drive from Sac for the knowledge and see Dan.
I've dealt with a few kayak shops in Northern CA and I can easily say Headwaters is the most helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly store.
Very informative ... thanks. Just about to buy my second fishing yak here in Australia. I have a sit on but am now getting a sit in that will handle small rapids.
Cheers
Very helpful video from a noob kayaker. Many thanks.
Thanks for watching, glad it was helpful.
Thank you! I'm researching my first kayak so I just may take you all up on your offer! :D
Nice video, very helpful for a new guy
Glad we could help!
Man, this was the best video I seen in a long time! Thanks guys!
Great video.....
I'm glad it was helpful.
Glad the vid was helpful, that year round fishing stuff is pretty awesome.
Thank you!
Awesome, glad I could help! Best of luck on your race.
Wow that sounds like a really cool event, good luck with your race!
