I learned everything I know about the Spark and it’s accessories from you and one other You Tuber. I thank you for teaching me! And I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your “clips”. AND don’t pay attention to the haters...they are all over the place. Well, this is not exactly on point, but after flying my Spark for two months, I brought it to the Bahamas and have gotten some fabulous footage. Except for the first couple of days after I first got my Spark, I’ve experienced no anxiety. When I arrived here two weeks ago I went to the flats for my first over water (very shallow, maybe 2 inches) and the flight was awesome. Since then I’ve flown over water every day. I even flew from my island over to Eleuthera, at least a half mile away. YESTERDAY MY SPARK FELL OUT OF THE SKY AND PLOPPED INTO THE BAY!!! I was filming my wife and puppy dog swimming off shore and it crashed right in front of them. She immediately picked it up but it was a gonner! I bought the protection package so let’s see how that works. I just can’t figure out what happened. I did everything right. I flew with an excellent signal and otg cord, calibrated the compass...everything. What a disappointment! I never thought it would happen to me. I’m afraid I will be anxious for a long time because of this!

Thanks for all this information on the intelligent batteries. For the "know it alls" that complained about the length of this video, firstly, you did prologue the video by telling us you put a time code log in the description. I don't know how that could not appease anyone who has a problem with the length of the video. And the fact that DJI includes a separate manual just for the intelligent battery is reason enough for you to spend as much time as you do explaining it all to us. I for one greatly appreciate it.

  • @tynix1

Who read the manual?... Really. Is much easy to watch all this stuff and to be honest, I watch it all 50 minutes...Very good!

Your channel was among the first I thought to share with him. I have some "coffee timers", in lack of a better word, which is an easy timer that you plug in to the wall, where you click a button, for example 1-4 times, for powering the plug 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes or 1-4 hours aka charging a battery (or operating a water cooker) for a fixed amount of time. Some of these only has 30 minutes as a setting, and they often are used in public institutions or nursery homes, to ensure safety when using those water cookers.
The fine thing about these, is that they are extremely useful when charging batteries for your gadgets, like in case - drones, as you will easily be able to set such a timer to charge a battery you want to store, partially charged, for example at the ideal SOC which is around 40%. Do not forget that batteries self discharge, so depending on the storage time, you might want to go a little higher than 40%. If you don’t fly your drone in the winter, store the batteries cold, still being careful about condensation when bringing the batteries into a warmer environment, keep in airtight bags.
And if you are super precice about being gentle to your drone batteries, you will even want to charge them to just near full, during the night and just complete the charge next morning, when eating breakfast.
Your mileage may vary, depending on apparatuses and charging speed, there is an individual voltage vs SOC curve for different types of batteries and another option to really geek out about this, is to use an app controlled smart plug that you can program with an accuracy on the minute, and where you can program it to start the charge now, to reach 40% just after use this day, and then continue charging up to 100% the next morning, just before you leave, to use your drones or whatever, minimizing the time, the batteries are left at 100% SOC.
Remember - you prolong the battery life of any of your gadgets, with such timers, and look at drones more like a worst case, with cell phones, and flashlights, powerbanka, vacuum cleaners and everything else, you of course don’t need to be super precice. It’s still about beating the power, as companies makes many gadgets that aren’t made to you being easily able to change the built in battery.
Still enjoying my Spark drone after all these years, btw. 😊

Best part was when he explained that DJI builds these drones with quality that favors the customer not the bean counters! When talking about the data pins you focused on the body receiving battery status information. However, DJI, being the wizards you so rightly pointed out, placed a key user interface on the back of the battery - the battery button, it connects to a small circuit board. And so you can send instructions to the motherboard via the battery button and battery circuit board. For example, you can reset the wifi password back to the default and temporarily lock the Spark in 2.4ghz by pushing and holding the battery button for certain numbers of seconds. So when I see battery mods that don't use the data pins, I know that they have dumbed down the drone in ways they might not have considered, over and above the loss of battery status during flights.

@@Dronevalley (please help) so my spark battery has not been used in a long time, I plug it in via micro USB and it makes a fan noise then it blinks up to led 2 about 4 times then pauses a moment and repeats this process, I try turning on the battery while connected to the wall outlet and it lights up all four Leds sequentially one time then led 1 blinks 3 times and stops charging all together, if I take out the micro USB and put it back it repeats the whole process again, People said its hibernating so I leave it on charge but it only reduces the brightness of the led lights with time, plug it back in and they're bright again. I have another battery but this is something that I feel ALOT of people need help with, either I'm doing something wrong or I just need another battery.

Why? Because the guy explains WHY you should do one thing and shouldn't another.

Watt you my also find interesting is that : while 11.4 volts x 1.48 amp hours = 16.872 watt hours ->
That equals 1,012.32 watt minutes of power - that means it ( theoretically ) can supply 1 watt for 1,012.32 minutes or
    1, 012.32 watts for one minute - :
Now if you take those watt minutes and divide by the run time -> 1,012.32 / 16 = 63.27 watts per minute - :
63.27 watts is an approximate average on how much power the drone is using continuously for the 16 minute run time ...
    Sometimes math is fun :)

So this quad uses about 5 amps in flight, or 1.25 per motor.

I'm waiting with my decision to buy my first drone until the battery life is better (40 minutes is a must). My dream drone would have photo and video quality of the Mavic Pro and the size of Spark with longer battery life and possibly folded arms. It would be very popular one among backpackers, motorcycle travellers and vloggers - as long as not too expensive. This is something I'm waiting for, this is my wish for 2018, DJI:-)

FYI the battery wont start charging whilst it is above its designated charge temp. If you stick it straight into the charger, it wont start taking a charge until it has cooled down.
it's automatic. :) Of course if the charger is after market, all bets could be off.

Fun fact: hold down the power button for 5-6 seconds and you can see the condition of the battery displayed on the leds

Excellent explanation of batteries and battery care. Is there any harm to keeping the batteries for extended periods in the charger? I have the 3 battery charger that came with the "fly more" package. I assume this charger will not allow overcharging?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  7 лет назад

Randy, technically you won't have an issue since the cells turn off when full but the connectors are spring loaded with a slight curve to them to ensure a full contact and I worry that the "spring" in them might fatigue if left in the charger for long periods of time. I always leave them in the case, somewhat discharged and then charge them the morning I'm heading out for a flight. Thanks for the post and the support. Stay tuned for more content! Rick

Good info. Thank you for the time you put into it. What’s your opinion on storing the drone with a battery attached? I’m using the case it came with and have 3 batteries. I do not want to purchase a case for the 3rd or any excess accessories.
