Can I fix it? A broken Sony Walkman from the 90's

  • This is the first in a new series of fix it videos I'm calling "F**k Around and Find Out".
Ever since I was kid I've loved taking things apart to see how they worked (which of course led to a LOT of broken toys). As an adult I still haven't lost that itch and over the past couple of years I've started picking up broken electronics to see if I can fix them.
I picked up this Sony Walkman WM-F2015 off of eBay for pretty cheap. It's actually the same exact model I had as a teenager back in the 1990's. The radio works but the cassette drive doesn't. Let's see if I can get it working again.

Probably one of easiest walkmans to repair compared to the slimmer ones.

Thanks for this excellent video - this might be one of the most detailed Walkman teardown videos on the internet. Thanks especially for pointing out where the speed adjustment is - whoever wrote the service manual conveniently left that out of the section on speed adjustment. I almost ended up messing with the radio adjustments on accident... lol
FixYourAudio happens to sell the exact belt for this model, listed under model WM-AF29 which uses the exact same tape mechanism. I found out the hard way that it is NOT the same belt used in the WM-2011, which deceivingly looks much more similar to the WM-2015.

If you replace the belt with an exact replica, would you still have to adjust speed?

Just watched your video liked it and am now watching Robbie the robot video. I have a few question about this exact model of walkman. So the radio works, but not the cassette on mine as well, replaced the belts, they spin, and i even adjusted the speed like i learned from your video but i still get no audio. It spins, it rewinds, fast forwards, and plays, but I just don't hear anything only when I play the radio. What else could I be missing are my belts just not good enough? Thanks any advice helps

Hey, thanks man! Glad you liked it. As far as what's going on with yours... hard to say. But it sounds like the new belts should be good if everything moves like it should. And since everything is moving... Getting no audio would usually signal to me there is a problem with the amplifier or headphone jack maybe? But you get audio when it's in radio mode, right? So it couldn't be those... Maybe the play head (tape head) is the problem. You could try cleaning it with a little isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip. If the head is super dirty (which you should see on the q-tip if it is) I guess it's possible that it can't read the tape. If cleaning doesn't help... another possible issue could be the wiring from the tape head to the circuit board could be bad/broken. In which case you would need to re-solder the wire(s) or replace the wire(s) completely. Hope that helps! Keep me posted on how it turns out.

You could probably use a 1:1 audio transformer to isolate your mixer from the Walkman. I think that should eliminate the hum.
