    Your videos are so informative Misilla, thank you! Complete novice here, and just had a couple of questions: How do you separate your worm cocoons from the castings? Is it visibly apparent when the cocoons have hatched, and what happens to the cocoons after hatching? Do you have to physically remove them, or will the worms ingest the old cocoons too? Thanks!

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  7 лет назад

      Hello, I'm sorry for my delayed response! The cocoons turns brown when the worms hatch. I'm not sure if the worms eat the cocoons, but I'm sure the break down along with the rest of decaying organic matter. I don't remove the cocoons when I harvest castings, it's not necessary. I'm glad you found this helpful! Thank you for watching and for your kind words! Misilla

    Thank you for sharing! Now I know what those yellowish ball looking things are in my big flower/vegetable pots! I never added any worms to the soil. In fact, I do not remember seeing but maybe one or two worms if even that when I worked the soil to add my plants! I have had problems with caterpillars, Japanese beetles and other bugs when I initially tried growing vegetables - first year quite successfully, but each successive year was more bugs, less edible fruit and more sickly/damaged plants. I eventually converted the pots to just growing flowers because I thought that those ball things (I had so many in the soil) were related to my bug problem. Now I know differently! Thank you so much! Now I am more curious about the life cycle of worms! Thank you again!

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 года назад +1

      Hi! Glad you found this helpful! Sorry to hear about your bug issues...when plants are stressed, they are more susceptible to insect pests and diseases. Try to feed the soil on a regular basis as well as watering. If growing in pots, fertilize every two weeks and in ground once a month, I hope you have a better season this year! Thanks for watching! Sorry for making so many questions but I am very interested in starting vermicomposting!!!!

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  7 лет назад +1

      Hello, I usually place a handful of worm castings around the plants, which will feed them for at least two months. I also amend it into the soil before I start planting or sowing seeds. Hey
    I'm a PhD scholar and I need your help and guidance. Please tell whether cocoons have to be kept in soil substrate itself and they ll hatch in the soil or I may keep them moist in soaked cotton also under my regular observation and they ll easily and normally hatch in the latter case too? Or they have to be strictly incubated in artificial soil substratum

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  3 года назад +1

      Hi there,
      The substrate I use in the worm bin is a combination of dry leaves, shredded paper and cardboard. The worms are fed on a weekly basis with vegetable and fruit waste, which contribute to the moisture content of the bedding. Ideal condition and temperature is 65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and moisture content of 80 to 90%. I think as long as the environment is favorable, they should eventually emerge. Hope this helps, thanks for watching!

      Also PH plays a role in temperature: more acidic = hotter, more alkaline = cooler

    what do you do with the worms get overpopulated

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  7 лет назад +7

      I start a new bin, usually a small one like a 10 gallon. This composter is 37 gallons so there's still plenty of room. Thanks for stopping by! Misilla

      They dont. They self regulate their own population. In the fall gather the fallen leaves and feed them with that. Stack 10 inches of leaves on top of them and around them for warmth. If you have them on the ground outside. If they are inside they might try to escape so keep an eye out! I hope this helps?

      pat smith i know ur question is a year old but il answer it anyways, answer: if the population gets too big then you can take some worms out and pour them onto some soil outside because they dont harm the environment so it should be fine.

    Hi so I have a few worms in my pet garden snails little habitat, and I found a few cocoons. The habitat has limited space, and I don’t think I can handle more worms, I already have about five. Is there a way to prevent breeding? If not should I just let them hatch and release them when they’re grown?

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 года назад +1

      They breed naturally when condition is favorable, you can always place the worm cocoons in the soil if you don't want them to hatch in the snail habitat. Thanks for watching!

      Hi thank you! I have a play list of our old bins. If you make your own from two containers, place one at the bottom to catch excess moisture. Drill holes at the bottom of the main bin. Here is a link, thanks for watching! Misilla

    Great video! I have found that the population of my red wigglers has dramatically decreased the past few months. I haven't fed them any dairy or meat, etc. Only egg shells, coffee grounds, lots of organic fruits and veggies, etc. I recently added some fresh peat moss so that they have new bedding. They seem to like it, but the population had dramatically decreased prior to adding the peat moss and changing their bin. What am I doing wrong? Please help! Thanks.

    • @LearnToGrow1
      @LearnToGrow1  4 года назад +1

      The peat moss is generally acidic and might be retaining too much moisture. If you add it to your bin, let it sit in water for 24 hours first and drain it.
      Add shredded cardboard or newspaper to absorb excess moisture every time you feed them and add some now. They like pulverized egg shells and can help reduce acidity of the peat moss. If you have time, you can redo the bedding and remove the peat. Hope this helps and your worms recover. Thanks for watching, Misilla

    • @jesus.maryandjoseph8880
      @jesus.maryandjoseph8880 4 года назад

      Thank you for the information. The population was greatly reduced prior to creating a new bin with peat moss. Someone on youtube said not to feed them too much, and they will reproduce more. I will take your suggestions. I already add pulverized eggshells. Maybe we are feeding them too much? Thanks, again.

    I've never seen so many happy red wigglers. So amazing!
    p.s. I don't see many red wigglers in my soil but instead tons of white small potworms. Is it good for composting? I've done some research online. Some people said these potworms are harmless and they can co-habitate with red wiggler and break down the kitchen scraps. Do the pot worms produce the same rich soil as red wigglers? I What's your view on this?
    Thank you!

      less water and add some garden lime or oystershell/calcium to increase the PH.If you add garden lime put a small amount in a cup and stir it to make a grey slurry.it will also add grit to the bedding.I mention this because i added the garden lime with out wetting it and the worms acted like it was burning there skin.So then i made it into a slurry and all was well.
