- / @plantobsessed I had a request to show how I sift and harvest my cocoons to start a worm nursery. This is different that just letting them sit in the castings and baiting them out.

Just bought a sifting pans. Thanks for the recommendation
Good info. I appreciate the way you teach in your videos. You aren't a know-it-all guru, but you show your experiences so that others can benefit. Thank you!
You have no reason to be apologetic about being an Amazon affiliate. I think we all know how that works.
If you have watched long enough you know I make some mistakes. I do learn best that way. Lol
@@PlantObsessed LOL
Thanks for this video Ann. I also wanted to see sifting and set up of a cocoon bin. I'm loving your videos.
Thank you. I'm glad you like the channel.☺️
Nice harvest of castings. 😎
Thank you
I love the feeling of castings from a cocoon/baby bin.
Useful and adorable lol
I love the castings that come through that smaller screen!! This will be fun to watch this cocoon bin get going from scratch!! I got the shirt in the mail!! Thanks so much!!! It is my first worm channel shirt!!!🪱🪱🪱
I'm glad it made it. It's the new band shirt of the new Era. Favorite channel shirts.
@@PlantObsessed 😀
A ton of castings per year. That’s really cool!
I regret the past where all that went to the landfills. Crazy to think if everyone did this what we could accomplish .
The best thing about that nursery is you can paint it any color you wish… 😂
They don't have eyes. I'll save the paint
Great info thanks!
Thank you.
Thanks for the info about how cocoons survive, Ann.
It made me feel better about times when my casting go dry. I now know there is a chance they survived.
@@PlantObsessed this is also have those darn invasive worm species survive. I think they’re called Asian jumping worms. I am in Southern California and ended up with them in my front yard after asking a tree trimming service to drop off some wood chips. Apparently these guys deplete the soil instead of enhancing it.
On my birthday I was looking for some potting mix in the backyard and found a ton of wild cocoons. Needless to say my birthday gift this year was a worm bin❤
Sweet. Like hitting the lottery 👍🏼🪱😁
Great video! Guess I'll have to purchase a few of those bucket sifters! I been holding off but I think it's due time. The 1/8th mesh I'm using seems to allow cocoons to pass, so I'll use your affiliate links when I buy. Thank you for sharing your progress!
Thank you 😀
that's what you call diligence!
Lol, sometimes.
A fine screen is a great thing to have. I don't have one (yet) so I have not yet been able to try screening for cocoons... but it definitely seems like a very effective way to retain a lot of cocoons rather than leaving them in the compost. And the fineness of the castings that pass thru the tiny screen is very nice too 👍🏻
I just so happen to have a link to a very useful screen 😇
Perhaps I should update my affiliate links to include those screen too _(even if I am too cheap to purchase them)_ :)
@@A-V I am looking to start harvesting cocoons, and I plan on trying a mesh trash can, office type. Maybe you have one. I'll try to let you know how that goes.
I sorta have something like that. It's the collection bin of an old paper shredder that I have. I never looked at it as if to use it for catching cocoons out of vermicompost. I might have to take another look at it to see if it might work for something like that :)
I only started the journey of vericomposting a few months ago. Had to buy a bag of worm castings with cocoons in it cos every time i order worms, it takes too long for them to get to me. the cocoons in the castings a bought survived tho. got arounf 30-50 worms maybe more starting off. since the population was so small i put them in a small shoe bin until the population gets bigger. they ate up a good bit and i was able to get half a gallon sized ziploc bag of castings. was gonna make use of it right away before i paused and said, hold up, just in case eggs are in here let me leave the castings in the bag for a bit. Sure enough tiny worms are in there.......like a lot and i keep seeing them even tho i keep taking them out and putting them in the main bin to increase the population. clearly i need to sift and get as much as possible. I still don't have enough for my likeling but in another 3 to 6 months i think i'll have enough to have a decent size bin.
The population grows exponentially it wont be long before you have worms coming out your ears lol :)
What you need to think is that you aren't "wasting" castings because in two-three months or so you will recover those castings and any new castings the new worms will make.
Lol I took out 2 -5 gallon buckets yesterday for the grape plants. The castings have started to move.
what are the light colored flecks in the worm castings? I have them in mine, and it seems like it's the shells of the cacoons?
I believe it is chicken egg shell. It was not ground up into powder when I fed it to the bin.🪱👍🏼😃
I have only just thought of this
Would it help to put the castings through blue into the mortar tray then through
The smaller one when you go on a cocoon hunt
Simply because you put the casting through that sieve while you are doing blue anyway
In my current state I don't need to save all the cocoons. Lol I'm running out of room again. Yes sometimes I have put it in a tray to dry more so I can sift smaller.
Do you use a special bedding for the nursery?
No, they just get the normal prepared bedding.
I looked fir the vidoe with the closeups of the cocoon from playlists but Cant find it.
ruclips.net/video/q2QGjJbHl1A/видео.html This is the good one where you can see the beating hearts. I hope you like it.
So I’m guessing the cocoons are not as fragile as you would think??
They are more leathery and so are a bit durable.
Can you tell me how you prepare your bedding please
This is the video that explains it. ruclips.net/video/8EzLVtJrYQk/видео.html
How many worms do you have to get a ton of castings per year?
I currently have about 50 pounds total across 4 systems. About a year ago I was up to 13 bins. 😃🪱👍🏼
Is it easier to ship cocoons than live worms? Are you planning to experiment with how long cocoons can be dormant before they are not viable?
That is a good idea. I don't know if anyone is doing cocoons anymore. They are less temperature sensitive.
If you didn't do this would the worms break out of the cacoons and just be in the castings?
Yes.
@@PlantObsessed thank you 🥰
so how many bins do u have
24 ish
@@PlantObsessed WOW I struggle to feed my three towers,3 compost bins and 6 chickens .iam getting friends to help but in s tx they don't want to hold their scraps that long I don't want my freezer full of scraps
ruclips.net/video/ripzeHsG8JY/видео.html she has a house full
Unfortunately I purchased most of my pans before you were affiliated.
They were cheaper for sure. I paid about 65 for the set of 5 now they are 95 last time I looked. That was 5 years ago. They are worth the money.
I see you pointing, but I don't see anything other than what is all over the screen. Zooming in might help. I'm not getting it from this video.
Thank you for the idea.
ok, u fix it 1/8................tks
De nadda
The eggs are going through and you're dumping the castings into the worm bed
I'm not perfect for sure.
You Can't remember screen size!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't we need ti KNOW THE SIZE SCREEN?
Lol yes
Don't be rude. Geez louise. Can't you do some research on your own?
