  • OK, what's up everyone?! So we have another How To Shad Rig video up on the channel.
Yes friends, this rig is very similar to one I posted when the channel started a few years back.
I wanted to make this video, short, sweet and easy to follow! Hopefully this video provided that but I want to go over a few pointers offered to those who may find themselves reading this.
When targeting these fish there are many things to consider. Such as the depth the fish are at, the distance the fish are from you, how fast the water is moving, and variables like water temperature (adjusting your retrieve speed. In general, the warmer the water is, the more active the fish can be. Hence, faster retrieve). So yes, there have been many different rigs for these fish on this channel, but which one would work best for you and what can you do to change the rig to better fit your conditions?
    • HOW TO : SHAD Fishing ...
Now this Rig is just a trolling weight followed by a spoon. The weight is what we are using to make the spoon castable and swim the spoon through the water depth you choose (based on weight size and retrieve speed). I use this in more deeper bodies of water and really take advantage of covering as much ground as possible by adding up to 2 ozs of weight. (I find myself using 1oz a lot) I kind of nicknamed it the shad fish finder because this rig can show me a lot on where the fish are by covering so much area. If they are hitting closer to shore I may switch to this,
    • HOW TO : Tie a SHAD RI...
This one uses the dart and spoon again but is tied a little different. This type of fishing for shad is much more enjoyable to me. You can use really light tackle that wouldn't be used for the 2 oz and spoon, but I do find myself adding small amounts of weight to this rig. This video will show you how!
THE MAIN THINGS TO NOTE FOR THE RIG MADE IN THIS VIDEO
-The knots used are not a HAVE TO DO thing. Use what you are comfortable with! This is just what I have found easiest.
-Some like to add a small bead in front of the spoon. After you slide your dart down the line, simply drop a bead down there too. I've fished em both ways and havn't noticed any difference.
-On the loop for the dart. Just like in many of the premade rigs, the loop sometimes has a clip on it. This allows your dart to be turned 90 degrees so it is in the direction with the line (It does look better but I have never found it very necessary to add). Over time making this rig, you will figure out how to adjust it's knot to make it straight without that. But, it also can
give a larger presentation to the fish trying to eat it (not always a good thing). But! If I did run the clip, it would just be to be able to switch out colors or darts faster. If you want the clip on your rig, just drop it down the line 1st, rather than the dart, tie it up, add dart after.
-You can run a bit heavier line for the lures. if you choose to do that, I would recommend leaving at least a foot above the dart to attach to main line. I would do a line to line knot rather than a barrel swivel there.
Dont be afraid to drop a question below! I have even more shad stuff up on the channel for you to view. Many tips shared and fish caught!
