I feel that Tom Welling actually robbed himself of what could've been a legendary moment on television. He was scared of being typecast but at that point it didnt matter everyone wants and knows him as Clark Kent because of how well and long he portrayed the character, its his most iconic role. At least if he had put on the suit for the finale, he wouldve been recognized as one of the best superman on screen and not just clark kent. All those years of building and developing the character of clark to finally see him become that american icon in full action would've meant everything for that show but Tom couldn't suck it up and throw on the damn suit smh.

That's the cliche version of Superman. Why is everyone into cliches these days? I wanted a Clark Kent who makes Superman a hero, not a Superman who makes Clark Kent look like a helpless dork. Smallville was able to portray a credible hero without the supersuit. Welling made that happen. People who complain about the suit can wear a suit in front of a mirror and photoshop themselves. Or maybe attend cosplays. Actors cashing in on making Superman a brand have hardly earned the right to portray "the" hero.

Still, it can't be avoided that mainstream expectations will get in the way... and there is more pressure not to yield so easily despite the backlash. I think the refusal to "suit up" created a "thirst" for the "cape" like no other... and brought Superman back to the popular imagination more than any "other" hype out there.

I think he said a lot of that because it was how the show wanted it to be. I mean the whole idea was it's Clark's journey to becoming Superman and show wise (cannon wise ) the idea to call the Blur Superman hit Lois in season ten when she was with Carter Hall and he said ubermensch which is translated as Superman in away. When I spoke with Erica year ago she said that her character or the direction they had was she already had the name for Clark when he chose to come out into the light and show his face. I agree that he did more Superman stuff than Clark as the seasons went on and I think that when the show went from Smallville to Metropolis that they should have done a Lois & Clark type show. I felt the tit for tat with Jor-El over the season was not really Clark/Superman like. I know they're all different Superman portrayals, but Reeve's character embraced his biological father and origins and learned from him as did Henry Cavill's character so to see Clark who desired to know more about him constantly combat with Jor-El was probably what I disliked most about Smallville.

In my opinion, the show would have been far more memorable, had he wore the suit. He played the role for a decade. Should have given the world what we all expected in the finale. Fact is, you appear in ANY role for a decade, oops, you've been typecast. Whether you're the Man of Steel, or a high school janitor. People remember you in that role, and studios, agents, directors, and producers, view you in terms of whether that role you played will be similar to the role they want to cast. That's how the industry works. Perhaps, when he started out, it was a real concern for him, but, a decade in, it could not have been, as he'd by then seen other actors donning the red cape getting other roles and doing well in them. He was stubborn. Fact is, he was stubborn, and I can't really fault him for it, but he should have given the viewers the ending we desired. That's what makes it memorable. Giving us a cheap substitute made it a middle finger, instead.

    • @JordanBrotherInJesus

Not even the last 2 minutes, I always thought this could have been a cool ending:
Lois & Clark on their knees with the wedding rings in the Daily Planet when the guy announces theirs a bomb up town. Begining of Superman theme begins to play. Clark tells Lois she'll need to tell the minister he might be a little late & Lois nods. He runs to the elevator and as the door closes on him you see him take off his glasses. Pan back to Lois who has a thoughtful look on her face, deeply exhales then with a big smile on her face, turns round and walks off.
Switch to Clark coming out the planet roof door. As he runs in behind a large pipe/wall on the roof, a brief special effect simulates his suit jacket, tie & shirt coming off at superspeed, but in slow motion. The camera zooms in on the clothes as they slowly fall to the ground. Camera now pans to the other side of the wall/pipe & the main part of the superman theme kicks in at the same time. Clark emerges wearing the full suit. Hands on hips, standing tall, head looking slightly upwards, his cape billowing in the wind. The camera slowly focuses in on him in this pose for around 5 seconds. He then extends his arms out straight, turns his hands to fists, and the show ends with him flying into the camera.
5 seconds. I'd have been happy with 5 seconds.

Since as an actor he did not have much of a social-media profile. Thus his decision to not change his stance for the last season of Smallville means that he deserves a career that will not really go anywhere beyond TV in smaller and smaller roles. I don't see him in a leading acting role ever again.

Exactly, he's probably now feeling the karma for his decision making now i the entertainment industry. It has a way of getting back at him. They knew of his attitude then, so he's not really advanced since then and has simply drifted from one minor TV role to another. He never really possessed the talent for feature film roles anyways. Or probably he obviously lacks the contracts in the business who could've easily helped him move forward since Smallville ended.

Whether Tom Welling agreed or not, he had been playing Superman for at least the last 5 years of the series. In my opinion, the journey to become Superman and the No Flight No Tights rule that had been established went out the door during season 5 after Jonathan died where the original premise of "Smallville" had ended. Starting in season 5, episodes started taking place more in Metropolis and Clark started encountering individuals that Superman should have been involved with. In season 6 both Martian Manhunter and the Green Arrow were introduced and the characters flew and wore tights (tight leather) respectively. Before the series ended, Clark had battled mostly all of Superman's main comic book rogues gallery: Lex Luthor, Mxyzptlik, Brainiac, Zod (on more than one occasion), Bizarro, Maxima, Doomsday, Metallo, and even Granny Goodness and Darkseid and all of Apokolips before being SUPERMAN.
This was a Superman show but without Clark Kent being called Superman. He already knew, was friends with, partners to and engaged to Lois Lane before even being Superman. He worked at the Daily Planet and had been hanging around there since season 5. (He should have been wearing his glasses for years but whatever). He's already met Lex as Zod, Green Arrow, Impulse, Aquaman, Cyborg, Martian Manhunter, Supergirl, Bizarro, Black Canary, Zod from season 9 and the Kandorians, Hawkman, Star Girl, Dr. Fate, and many more individuals who all had embraced their superhero personas before he did even though one could argue that their superhero personas should have been directly influenced by Clark, as Superman is generally seen as the first among the heroes in comic book lore, or at least the first among his generation. Unfortunately, the No tights (tight leather) No Flight rule seemed to only apply to the Main character of Clark Kent which continually made him look less awesome in comparison.
In any case, Smallville turned into more of a Superman show than Tom Welling probably wanted it to be or even the showrunners believed it ever would be. As such, seeing an episode, or two or three, fully depicting Superman (in costume) on the show was not only earned but after ten years was over expected. In short, the fans got gypped.
    P. S. They even introduced Connor Kent-Superboy, Superman's teenage-clone, before Clark had even become Superman, for goodness sake.

@skye4376, that was one of the best written statements I had read over in years on youtube.

" I... F**ING Hate wearing Tights !!! " I spent weeks resewing blue jean pants to make them look like leather armor, and the jean suit felt better to wear in public than the tights did.
ii.) It has been awhile since I seen the Dean Cain " Lois & Clark " series, so I can't say how good the cgi flying looked like or how much it cost to do flight scenes .
ii.) Show theory went from being " Smallville " leading up to a series of " Metropolis,"
      instead we got " Gotham."
iii.) Honestly I seen a few " Else Worlds," comic series or single shots, where Superman retired out of the tights and just wear farm clothes everywhere he when.

I guess I must be in the minority since I wasn't really all that interested in seeing Welling in the supersuit. For me the show was more about his growing up as Clark Kent and learning from all of those experiences. I thought Mr. Welling did a wonderful job over the course of ten seasons and brought a lot of sincerity to the character. He portrayed Clark as a teenager/young adult with problems and issues that he sometimes struggled with just like any other non-super-powered person. When I want to see someone wear the Superman outfit, there are always a whole bunch of other movies, tv shows, comic books, and animated series I can turn to. To be honest, I always appreciated the simple blue t-shirt/red jacket (or vice versa) ensembles he usually wore. Just felt more subtle to me. What can I say? Instead of the tights and cape, I think my inner fanboy looked forward more to the scenes when he wore the glasses.

    • @Melissa.Garrett
      @Melissa.Garrett 4 года назад +3

Yes. To me, the aura an actor wears to portray Clark/Superman is even more important than the suit. Tom Welling had the same kind of “goodness” radiating from him that made Christopher Reeve so special, to me. Both gave their versions of the character a purity and innocence that is really the essence of Superman, with or without tights.

I actually really loved the finale. I think the choice to not have Tom wear the suit worked well if you take it symbolically. I think the show is trying to say that Clark didn't just become Tom Welling in a Superman suit, he became THE Superman. That's why in the shot after he chucks Apokolips and he's floating in space, as soon as the camera gets close enough to get a good look at Superman, it cuts to a picture of Superman in a comic book. If you really wanted to see Tom Welling in a Superman suit, it doesn't take much to imagine what it would look like given the little snippets we got in the finale.

Maybe he is not looking for suoer stardom ans wants to be able to live a relatively normal life.

To be honest, if Tom Welling showed up on any of the current CW series, I don't think a whole lot of people would really recognise him. He's changed quite a bit since his days as Clark Kent in Smallville, so I think it would be better if he didn't show up in The Flash, Supergirl or Arrow.
Also, I don't think anyone should be blamed for the whole "No tights, no flights" thing in Smallville. At the end of the day, they were making a series following the early years of Clark Kent and I think they did a really good job of that. The way they ended the series was pretty good, but there was never really any need for Superman to show up, just imply that he would and leave it at that. I think Tom Welling's decision to not wear the suit was absolutely fine, it was after all a series about Clark Kent, not Superman, as I said before. Tom Welling playing Clark Kent was great. Like it was often said, he looked a lot like Christopher Reeve when he was younger. His portrayal as Clark Kent was more than adequate, playing Superman would probably have overshadowed his performance as the silent hero from high school or reporter from the Daily Planet.

If Tom Welling were to appear on any Arrowverse show, there'd be enough Internet publicity ahead of time so almost all viewers would know it's him - regardless of how different he looks. It's funny how he didn't want the suit because he feared being typecast as Superman when he basically played both characters longer than anyone else. The only other actor who would've been typecast was Reeve. But he also had theater to fall back on. Had Reeves not committed suicide, he likely would've got out of Superman's shadow, since at that time, people didn't watch TV as much as we do now and might've eventually forgot him. And for Dean Cain, the few roles he's had since L & C have been nothing like Superman. For Welling, it probably would've helped his career to don the suit for the last episode. But I'll admit, I HATED the Superman Returns suit.

I enjoyed Smallville very much for the first few seasons. I liked the idea of telling Superman's story before he became Superman, but I figured maybe around season five he'd actually put on the suit. I do remember liking how Clark's wardrobe always echoed the suit. He'd always wear clothes that were red and blue with an occasional dash of yellow. However, I didn't expect that to be how they'd play it for ten years. That was just silly. Five years tops. By the time we got to Lois, it's stupid he's not wearing the suit. Around the time they introduced Lois Lane into the series, I was losing interest anyway. It wasn't just the suit thing. It felt like Lex's story as much as Clark's, but that had mostly run its course. There were many things about the writing and where they took characters like Pete Ross and Chloe Sullivan that just didn't make sense to me and after awhile I just had better things to do than keep tuning in every week. Had I known up front Welling never planned to put on the suit, I would probably have never watched beyond the pilot. I used to wanna be an actor, and back when I studied acting, you did what the director said. You did what the script said. You did whatever was necessary for the part you were portraying. When the story line dictates it, you put on the suit. End of argument. If you can't handle that, then don't take the part.
If he didn't want to wear the suit, he shouldn't have taken the role. That's like taking the role of Sherlock Holmes but refusing to ever wear the deerstalker and calabash even as a gag. I'd blame Welling here, but I also blame those who agreed to that deal. There are other actors on the planet. Get one that doesn't make such an outrageous ultimatum.
