    Smallville established the superspeed depiction of "you move so fast everything becomes slow". To save on budget, they had everybody stay still while making Clark normal speed, creating the illusion of superspeed.
    The idea would later go on to be used for Quicksilver, Flash, etc. But the idea was first developed and executed here in Smallville.
    You can love or hate Smallville. But the fact is that Smallville pioneered a lot of superhero ideas that are beloved today.

    Fun fact: both Tom and Michael have stated that it was Clark's fault that Lex turned to evil. By hiding his powers from Lex (while revealing them to seemingly EVERYONE ELSE in Smallville), Clark set in motion everything that eventually led to Lex's downturn. In the beginning Lex genuinely wanted to be friends with Clark and would have been his biggest cheerleader and support while Clark was learning to control his powers, but by hiding them, Lex became obsessed with discovering the truth of everything around Clark.

    • @bawintermage8351
      @bawintermage8351 Год назад +74

      I disagree, This explaination was a pretext for Lex's jealousy, rage and xenophobia. Lex for all his protestations is a sociopath. He blames everyone around him for his actions. Look at his treatment of Lanna. ( Kidnapping, fake pregnancy, underage fixation) Sure Clark "could" have told Lex, but in the end Lex is a Luther and he would have either corrupted Clark or imposed upon him to use his powers in unsavory ways, thereby ending their friendship and having the same ending: Lex and Clark are Adversaries!

    • @vietnameeseguy
      @vietnameeseguy Год назад +5

      @@bawintermage8351 it’s the “what if” question if different things happens are you gonna end up a different person. That’s the point of the Lexmas episode. If Clark had told Lex the truth at the beginning before all the lying made Lex question Clark’s friendship could Lex overcome his demons with his fathers abuse and mothers death? But it’s also how would that change affect Clark and his journey becoming Superman.
      Then you end up going into circles and then it bleeds into Flashpoint or multiple earths, universes/alternate or parallel universes. It’s ridiculous but it’s fun to ponder for any character. The flash or Batman with their parents death or if Clark had landed in Russia or found by the Luther’s ect

    There will always be people who can't grasp the concept that costumed characters don't equal campy storytelling. How the costumes are depicted and how well the story and characters are written are more important than what clothing is worn. There is a similar group who refuse to watch animated movies and series, for very similar reasons. They seem unable to grasp the concept that the worth of the story is in the story...not its trappings.

    While there are many noteworthy aspects of Smallville and a number of others that certainly deserve praise, Smallville’s “fresh” take on Clark Kent turned stale rather quick. Clark’s constant obsession over Lana got old by the end of season 2. The writers’ refusal to give Clark someone else to focus on or something else to do became the albatross around this show’s neck in the end. It dragged the show down so much that it marred even it’s most praiseworthy aspects.
    Don’t even get me started on Tom Welling’s refusal to don the Superman suit for even just one episode. Despite the fact he got to tell Clark’s story for 10 seasons, far longer than anyone had expected. After such a long wait, fans deserved that pay-off. We never got it.

And Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor and John Glover as Lionel made the show as much or moreso than Welling. The only thing that doesn't hold up now is the meteor freaks of the week type villians on the show. It made the show feel a little too campy and gimmicky. Otherwise, it was fantastic. If there's another Superman movie made, I'd love to see the Smallville cast with Welling as Superman and Rosenbaum as Lex.
    And I always thought the WB/CW channel made a huge mistake in not using Justin Hartley in his own Green Arrow show. As much as I enjoyed "Arrow", Stephen Amell just wasn't as charismatic, funny, and couldn't pull off scenes with depth for the character.

I still watch it all the way through every few years or so. I think it's only rival, on the big or small screen, is the newer Superman and Lois show, which is also excellent.

    Smallville was amazing series. Yes, it had it's faults in certain areas, but it overall had the best versions of Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Oliver Queen/Green Arrow and Lana Lang. Tom showed such an amazing amount of hope, strength, honor and integrity as Clark, Michael showed great cunning, deceptiveness, yet caring and longing for family/friendship in Lex. Laura had a great fierceness, sassiness, strength, had great bonding moments with Clark as well as protecting him, teaching him to fly. Justin Hartley had a great sense of humor and wise crackingness to Oliver that worked well for his version on Smallville.

Back then I didn't even know his name. This was way before Smallville. I think he was apt for the role.

    I thought Welling was consistently one of the worst things about the show - excepting Lana who was written tremendously bad. Welling really couldn't act. He delivered almost every line exactly the same. He was a pretty boy. It was Rosenbaum and, as badly as this will sound given what we learned about her after the fact, Allison Mack who really carried that show.

    It's been year's so I don't remember all the details.
    Clark goes back in time by using a crystal to save someone very close to him from dying. Lois if I'm correct.
    But nothing is without cost, without price.
    If I'm remembering correctly at the end of the episode his father died of a heart attack.
    Saved Lois but lost his father who did not have a heart attack when Lois died. The universe demanded a death to fill the void Lois's death left and it chose Clark's Father.
    I'll alway's remember these line's that were spoken in that episode ~ We are not God's. There is only 1 crystal.

      It was in the 100th episode of the series, Reckoning.
      Clark had finally revealed his secret to Lana and proposed to her. Lex eventually worked out she knew Clark's secret, leading to a high speed chase where Lana gets killed.
      Clark begged Jor-El to save her by going back in time and not revealing his secret to Lana. But by doing this, it sets in motion a series of events where Jonathan is confronted by Lionel about Clark's secret and has a heart attack while trying to protect his son. In addition, Lana doesn't die, but she also doesn't see what a danger he is, leading to her getting further involved with him later on.
      And to think, it all happened because Clark had disobeyed Jor-El and lost his powers earlier in the season. Clark got shot and killed, and Jor-El brought him back and restored his powers, but with a promise that somebody close to Clark would be taken from him in order to restore balance to the universe. For Clark, it was a painful lesson that there are always consequences to every decision.

I decided to ask him if I could get him a drink as I loved his work on Smallville. He said I was the only one who recognized him. Ended up chatting with him for a while. If they had put Tom Welling into the Superman Returns movie instead of Brandon, maybe it might have done better. However, it also came down to the plot of the movie and the writing, so I don't know. Putting a TV show actor into a movie might not have drawn out the box office crowds. Neither did the presense of Brandon Roth. The movie plot was a bit of a retread with a mostly "Lex Luther type plot" done again. It needed a bigger threat. Maybe a different villain like Brainiac.

    Same as I lived Charmed episodic fighting monsters but not the later seasons relationships and children.
    Same with Flash.
