The “are you man or Superman” line is actually kind of clever. Clark is reading Nietzsche, the philosopher who wrote about the Übermensch, roughly translated as “over” or “super” man. She’s making a reference to the book and accidentally to Clark himself. It’s probably one of the smartest things that ever happened on this show.
You're smart.
I don't know there was that episode whee the air force recruiter said "I see you flying around in uniform saving people"....that was.....kind of forced and ham fisted.....😏
Yes, it's the very line that first inspired the creation of the idea of superman's character.
Sorry for not noticing before that the word "of" above was replaced with "pig" by my phone's autocorrect. It often replaces "of" with "pig" or with the meaningless letters "oig". It replaces "and" with "Abd". I don't always catch it before hitting send from my phone.
You're right. It is a very clever line. I actually didn't get that line until pretty recently. I always assumed it was a cheesy way to have them use the word, Superman. But it's actually a smart way of using his famous name and referencing it whilst ALSO being a reference to the book he's reading. (It's also the only time the name Superman was used until the last few minutes of the finale when Chloe was reading her son a comic book called Superman about her best friend. Though they used the name Superboy once in like the first season when the guy accidentally stole Clark's powers by being electrocuted while holding green Kryptonite started using his powers pubically at their high school. Chloe dubbed him Superboy in the Torch, the school newspaper at Smallville High school. Though no one ever called Clark himself Superboy sadly.)
I mean its not smart. The fact someone created superman from the ubermensch just means the person didnt understand the concept at all
"They find a naked little boy in a corn field" 😂😂

I love how Clark is supposed to be a "freshman" when in fact he looks older than a high school senior. The things you don't think about as a kid. 😁
By this standard of kids today, he'd fit right in. Knew a 10 grader who look like a grown ass man.
I think actors had to be at least 18 or older to play teenagers in shows back then. Weird rule, I know.
Well, Tom Welling, the actor who portrays Clark, was 24 at that time. Back then they had people in their mid to late twenties playing high school students.
not really. They are better actors and do not have to comply with a whole bevy of regulations dealing with younger people.
its tv duhhhhhhhhhhhh
Tom Welling wasn't experienced when he started Smallville because this was one of his first roles in his acting career. I would give this video credit if it was based on the 5th season, which created a gateway for other superhero shows like this one. This show is not meant for those who want to know more about Superman but those who want to know more about Clark Kent. If you are interested in a heck of an origin story, this is the perfect show for you.
As a huge Smallville fan, i cant have put it any better. But remember that this not only the origin story of Clark Kent but also Lex Luthor... And also the perfect mixture of action, adventure, drama, romance and comedy makes this show special
Don't forget how ridiculous it was that Clark was 14 in that episode

the weirdest thing about the show is that nobody finds creepy that Clark have a telescope constantly aiming at Lana's house
hervé Gauthier It is creepy until you know him
@@justarandomguywantingtostu6539 No, even when you know Clark, it is still creepy. Cause think about it, he is a good superpowered samaritan one day, and a peeping tom the next. That is the actions of someone with MPD.
Pretty sure alot of characters point this out, Lana being the first but Clark plays it as being a coincidence. She did bring it up at some point that it makes him look like a stalker, but knowing how this show worked she was being evil.
@@Champsr0ck2247 Actually i think she was okay with it. Literally he was upset with her moving because he can't watch her sleep through his telescope anymore. He had dreams of developing the power of flight and flying into her bedroom and seeing her sleep there too.
A lot of characters note how weird it is
One of the things that I notice, looking back, was that Smallville was one of the last shows where a strong father figure and family (mother and father working together) were emphasized. Clark's entire character development (morality, sense of worth, need to sacrifice, sense of justice, etc.) was shaped/influenced by strong men (Jonathan Kent, Jor El and even some by "the emissary of Jor El") and woman (Martha Kent). And they portrayed that without feeling the need to look down on the men in the show. Nowadays, it's all about either an evil dad, a deadbeat dad, amoral dad, an absent dad or some combination. Even though the characters were cookie cutter (after all, it's a superhero origin story), every character (men and women) was well portrayed and developed. That extends to the villains too in spite of the fact that they were flawed. Well, there were some really bad episodes and characters too. As you pointed out, the show was not without its flaws and I'll add that nothing's ever perfect anyway.
thats something i loved about the start of the series, it put a lot of thought on clarks family. which is a big part of clark kents character. a lot of people just kinda throw in the parents and jonathan's death but they deserve so much more. they are the entire moral center and reason why clark is the way he is, and the family really shows how much they care about each other.
@@captaincaterpie agreed!
@@user-xk8wp4bg3x this is very confusing because you worded " And they portrayed that without feeling the need to look down on the women in the show." like they were without a feeling looking down on women. Smallville paved the way for arrowverse. Watch closely, even the themes and storylines are similar. Meteor infected sounds similar to the flash and metahumans and darkmatter infected. Just repackaged differently.
Both of those shows are trash compared to Smallville
Bee Xiong There were very similar concepts and story arcs that are paralleled with super girl.
For one Reign, who followed supergirl to earth and had an evil alter-ego which can be compared with Davis blooms/doomsday who would also black-out( his actor was agent liberty on supergirl too)
Brainiac/Braniac 5 on smallville compared with brainiac 8 (Indigo, acted by Laura vandervoort who played supergirl in smallville)
The legion on smallville coming back in time to save their future just like supergirl and their legion with characters acting very similar I believe exact characters being reference between each other
Different kryptonite affects episodes, like red kryptonite infected Kara and Clark
Tess Mercer - Lena Luthor
Both martiAn manhunters, had similar voices and how they portrayed the characters
And even more comparisons, it’s crazy how much of a influence smallville had on supergirl and even other shows on the arrow verse
Metahumans were even mentioned once by chloe around season 6 or 7 (I just finished watching it through again) so they're not meant to be synonymous but different ways to introduce the one-episode villains. They didn't try to explain bart's (impulse/flash family) powers because it was more about clark's villains and meteor infected just was the way most of the villains got their powers. I do not know how the people get their powers in the comics so I don't know if superman's villains got their powers from kryptonite aswell. It's like you say though, repackaged differently. The meteor powers just fit in more with Clark Kent and the meteor shower, and the metahumans just fit the particle accelerator for barry allen. "stick to the theme"
It was the first of its kind!
Dakai-kun 22 smallville isn’t that good
Smallville drinking game, drink whenever:
-Clark superzooms away and whoever's left behind looks around confusedly.
-Clark, Lana or Lex demands truth or honesty from someone (usually each other) while simultaneously lying to their face.
-Someone rips open Clark's shirt.
-Clark needs to seduce a girl for distraction.
-Chloe explains something obvious to Clark.
-Chloe does some amazing computer hacking.
-Somebody barges uninvited into Lex's office.
-Lionel appears in Lex's office to taunt him.
-Lex/Lionel pours himself a whiskey (extra drink if the whiskey glass then gets smashed during the scene).
-Clark goes to Lex's house/Lex goes to Clark's house to have a 2 minute conversation.
-Martha and Jonathan give each other a meaningful look.
-Jonathan gets knocked out.
-The Kents' home gets trashed.
-There's a close-up shot of Lois' boobs.
-Somebody gets a convenient amnesia or memory loss after seeing Clark using his powers.
-Clark gets to be out of character for an episode.
Am I forgetting anything?

"Green stone"
DC Fans: TRIGGERED.
LOL YEEESSSS
Triggered af
I am so triggered right now, I have friends that barely even now D.C. and even they know its called kryptonite
I was too triggered
Damn relatable
Weird, I'm a DC fan and I wasn't triggered when Alex said "green stone" because the green meteor rock in the show isn't called Kryptonite at first. Most of the time, especially in the first 3 seasons of the show, the "green stone" is referred to as green meteor rock because:
1.) Clark is still figuring out his extraterrestrial heritage
2.) Clark keeps his friends in the dark about him not being human until he can't anymore
3.) Clark doesn't learn the name of his home planet, Krypton until later in the series
4.) The humans on planet Earth, besides Martha and Jonathan Kent and Clark's friends when they eventually learn the truth, don't call the green meteor rock Kryptonite because they don't know the green meteor rock is called Kryptonite
and
5.) The term "Kryptonite" isn't used until at least the 4th and/or 5th season
Also, Kryptonite IS a green stone made from the green meteor rock that crash-landed on Earth due to being in the gravitational pull of Clark's escape shuttle/ship. So calling Kryptonite a "green stone" is still accurate and correct.
Note: I get that OP's comment is a joke, however not all DC fans get "triggered" by something so pointless and benign as calling Kryptonite a "green stone" because Kryptonite IS a "green stone" that once made up the fictional planet Krypton before the planet was sadly destroyed because of a devastating civil war where no side won and a whole species/race was completely erased from existence leaving one single ray of hope to fly through the universe and land on a planet called Earth in the tail-end of the Milkyway Galaxy.
This show is still better than most shit on netflix. Its totally a product of its time but Most shows still haven't even matched the heart that this show had. Its definitely not for everybody but theres denying how much this show got right and how creative it got in terms of adapting the material to make it work for the universe built in the show..
it lasted for 10 seasons, that says a lot (these days they shit out one show after another and have it cancelled after 2 or 3 seasons... I mean, yeah, Arrow has 8 seasons, that's pretty close, I guess... the Flash has 6 and was renewed for 7th...)... It was a very weird show. But in a lot of ways it was ahead of its time. It gave us the best on screen Lex Luthor of all time (irrefutable), the best on screen Green Arrow of all time (don't @ me), showed us Superman actually struggling, and some moments in the show are still pretty well written. @@SWAYY21 also Chloe is my fav character on the show. So mad Clarke never chose her over Lana, she was clearly the better choice.
Firstname Lastname
That was more of a comic thing, since Clark first had Lana Lang and then Lois Lane, so they just tried to follow the comics in that regard
Also Lana is much easier to dispose for Lois than Chloe since she remained an important character from start to finish, would’ve been hard to give them the dynamic they had by the end of the series if they came off a break up
Hell yeah! I love this show. It's one of my favorites, second only to Doctor Who and possibly tied with Supernatural. It's amazing. I never liked Superman until Smallville. This is totally b.s. but here's why. He has super speed where basically he slows time down for everything except him so he seems to be moving super fast. When he's asleep he can't control it and "moves at super speed" and sleeps like a week his time but only a night for us, not every night but enough. You'd think after enough times of him being right, that his friends would actually begin to believe him or something.
Yeah, they definitely followed plot formulas, so they were pretty predictable. Like most anytime sum1 figured Clark out they either died, got amnesia, or got sent away somehow. But I loved watching it play out anyway, and it gave me chuckles.

Well, think about it. It’s a show based on a comic book series about an alien from another planet with super powers. Toss in green rocks that can give normal humans freaky abilities and I’d say it’s not really so bizarre, at least not enough to make anyone do some re-evaluating of themselves.
People suffering severe head trauma repeatedly with no negative long term effects is probably my most hated trope in fiction at this point.

Judging Smallville by it's Pilot Episode,Now that's Weird
Pretty fair, that's how networks judge whether a show is worth producing any further. That's why you can find pilots for more things that failed to go anywhere than not. Although I agree with your point, it'd be interesting to hear an opinion about a whole season overall.
@@13realmusic true but most shows get better after the pilot. The pilot has to explain the characters background, set the foundation of the story and the tone of the show. While it is one of the most important parts, all of these can sometimes make it less entertaining, cheesy and repetitive. You really cannot judge the quality of a show by the pilot
@@megkrish7568 Well you can, if you want to start a new show and the pilot is bad, then why would you continue? The pilot is basically whether you want to continue the show or not.
@@ioahII yea I get the mentality, if the pilot is irredeemably bad I wouldn't want to continue watching either but from my experience I've seen many good shows that didn't start well but finds their footing in later episodes. If the premise is interesting, I would give it a few more episodes is all

Smallville was able to forge a compelling plot with excitement and poise, while still having the cheese of the early 2000s.
Nicely put. Agreed
Smallville = One of the best shows in quality writing and acting and times of WB before CW completely... now Arrow/etc are just fifth rate stories. The last few seasons weren't the BEST but still better than what is on CW/ABC/etc now.

They portrayed clark and lex perfectly. But everyone else was perfect too! (Loved Jonathan Kent) my favorites were seasons 1-4, I enjoyed the high school life the most. This show is actually realistic as it shows superman is in no way invincible and goes through struggles every day. Tom Welling is the best Superman by far.

@Sam Lindsay I thought season 10 was fantastic, but the show went downhill as soon as Lex got killed off. He was perfect.

Season 4, 6 and 9 were incredible! But unwatchable here in Germany. Episodes cut down to 30 Minutes . 2 Episodes of Season 6 have aired here at night because of the brutality.. but i didnt care ,watched it after the us premiere anyway. :-) And i thought the Series Finale was pretty decent !

And even the pilot was good
I wish that this show had done more with the whole "Clark is the local Native American tribe's prophesied Messiah" thing. And yes, that was actually a thing.
I wish they had done less with that. Really like none levels of it. I think that would've been best for everyone. Because it was bad.
I think that whole storyline was to indicate that Smallville is where Kryptonians had visited before, so it actually makes some sense that Jor-El sent baby Superman to Smallville in the first place.
I thought that plot line was okay but didn't really like how they drew Jor-El into it and made him a weird disembodied evil ghost who lives in a portal behind a rock wall?
Smalleville is one of those rare shows where earlier seasons are good than it kind of goes down hill a bit. Than around seasons 7 it gets really really good again. Than becomes amazing almost like a completely different show. And ends on a high satisfying note. Seriously watch the later seasons in comparison to the earlier seasons It’s amazing

Honestly i think he was closer to Lex in terms of age. Clark said his birthday was some random day that his parents chose, if you look at the arrival scene he looks to be about 6 or 7 years old. So when Pete, Lana and Chloe are 15 Clark is most likely 19/20 years old.

Flash looked horrible in smallville
Smallville has in fact held up well. The production standards are excellent with innovative and varied cinemagraphic styles, the cast is ( was) fresh and capable and the stories compelling. What has changed is what we expect from a drama. Pacing, the characters develop and grow dear over the seasons like in a real friendship as opposed to the static stereotypes and tropes in yodays dramas. Even though aimed at the teen crowd, Smallville was never dumbed down or a consistent victim of the "skin to win " ratings plot device. The show, featured some of the finest and even unconventional portrayals of familiar characters before or since, Jack Snyder take notes. Michael Rosenbalm's Lex is sympathetic, Kristen Kreuk is lovely and strong, Everyone, is fantastic, even the freak of the week actors. Watch this show, but dont binge all at once. Watch and let the characters start to grow. The first season is soso, but 2 -5 are excellent. 6-8 offers some great twist and additions and while stumbling in spots, 9 and 10 cross the finish line in respectable times.
I agree. Sadly the "the static stereotypes and tropes" of newer dramas, also means that these series are basically stale after 1-2 seasons.
The only issue I have with it was that while yes, most shows are predictable save for a few when it comes to tropes; the earlier seasons of the meteor freak of the episode got way too old, way too fast; and it was always one set of repetitive circumstances or another. Cliched reactions, etc. They needed better writers in that department; but yeah, the overall development of the characters was done in a way I kind of miss out on in most of the modern ones.
Agreed. Pilot opening with the meteor showers is one of the most compelling show openers to this day. Definitely one to let grow on you as well. I for one think the season 1 was perfectly contained. After season 5 it lost its way and got trickier/a lot less interesting after Lex wasn't in it anymore...it became more 'Superman' as in alien threats and all that stuff while the quiet contained conflicts that were mostly only around the Smallville area (a young man just trying to deal with having otherworldly powers) helped ground it and give it a certain charm.
Smallville also avoided a lot of contemporary pop culture references, which can date a show. If you overlook the 2000’s era technology the show actually ages really well. The special effects are more hit than miss and there aren’t things that would be considered problematic now that weren’t then.
Comparing this show "Smallville" to other tv shows. I still think Smallville is in top of the list. Smallville's story telling, visiuals, character build up, and so on is so much better than other super themed tv shows that i have seen on the air now. Now a days they just don't do that well, maybe people are okay with bad storytelling. Well that's my opinion.
Just to add some more, I think Buffy the vampire slayer and charmed where well done tv shows, i think good character build up and storytelling. But i think Alex Meyers does not focus on to these thing more what seems to be awkward to him. But i think your missing the meaning behind this story of "Smallville".
Smallville basically neutered everything that makes superheroes fun and replaced it with teen angst and dudes with codenames and vague superpowers running around in color-coded sweatshirts fighting disposable nobodies.

Still better than any current DC Tv show.
Smallville has it's own identity and better world building. It truly has heart in every episode instead of goofy one off episodes like girls night out in flash season 4 and the characters' development continues naturally and Clark never plays second fiddle to other characters.
Further the focus is on his journey to Superman; the mission statement doesn't change every season in an endless cycle of big bad we have to stop until the next one, with characters regressing for no reason and pointless b plots that contribute nothing to the overall story.
It may not look like the comics as much as the arrowverse but it's a far better tv show because it's storytelling characters, theme and world are more compelling.
Ah, so you are going for the better TV show argument. Let me ask you this then, what was Clark's journey? Cause i saw nothing. See, this is the problem with going the route of having him do superheroics right away. You don't get a journey and you just keep on limiting him to increase the run time. Clark was mostly fighting filler villains with a supporting cast that never was fleshed out as real characters. (besides Lex Luthor until they killed him) So we never got a story. Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl have some terrible filler too, but they also actually have season arcs and stories told that bring out better sides of their personas by the end of it.
Xander M You're high! Smallville actually had better story arc's than The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl. Also with Smallville Clark you got to see him grow into his superpowers and the growing pains of being different than everyone else and how it effected him. None of todays superhero shows go that deep into character.
