      also I think the price is proportional to the "target". while Izumi only tried to bring back a baby (x amounts of pounds) the brothers tried to bring back an adult, much heavier, at least more mass than themselves. you know, equivalent exchange and all

    • @TheKiza02
      @TheKiza02 4 года назад +7

      @@chainclaw07 *POTENTIAL SPOILERS*
      The price is ironic in a sense, I forget what al's irony was but ed's was basically, "you've committed taboo, you don't have a leg to stand on in this argument" and "what you want is going to cost you an arm and a leg". The teacher lost her ability to conceive (via weakening her by taking parts of her organs) because she tried to bring back her child. if it was proportional to mass of the target I wonder how much everyone would have weighed for the cost to have been a small child's body and part of another small child's leg. that's actually very interesting

    • @miot22
      @miot22 4 года назад +9

      I’ll just say the price paid cannot be something to do with the mass of the target. Because to do the human transmutation, you must have already gathered all the relevant elements aka mass that makes up a typical human. What “creates” the taboo, and the ensuing consequences is then the price of the one thing that is not represented by the matter. It’s the price of the soul.

    • @TheKiza02
      @TheKiza02 4 года назад +4

      @@miot22 *totally a spoiler*
      I understand it can’t be to do with the mass, it’s just an interesting thought. And yeah the taboo is because of the soul price, but the resulting consequences have nothing to do with the price of a soul, the consequences come from trying to play god, that’s why the consequences are specifically tailored to be as spiteful as possible to the individual, because it’s truth saying “you didn’t need to do this, you shouldn’t be doing this, some things just need to be left alone, stay in your sandbox”. This anime is in my top three because of the many messages it has, it’s sooo good

    Okay of all the changes from manga this episode is the only one that actually makes me angry. She didn't take them in because they were sobbing. After learning their story, she sympathized, but continued to smack them away every time they asked, and they kept just coming back, till eventually:
    Teacher: "I'm telling you BACK OFF."
    Elrics: "We're telling you we WON'T"
    It was their determination that won her over, not pity.
    (Also she had someone secretly monitoring them on the island to make sure they didn't die in the manga)

    No, the symbology on the portal is never explained. It's basically the Tree of Life from Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism that gets into more of the woo side of things. The languages on it are Hebrew and I think Latin, as Latin was used in real life alchemy.

    The inscription on the gate of truth is the Sephirotic Tree, or the Tree of life; it comes from the Jewish Gnostic Mysticism sect. The inscription is in Latin. It (the tree) is not explored or explained in great detail in this anime, as the inscription on the gate is different with each person who sees the truth.
    As for Izumi, the price she paid for trying to bring a dead baby back to life is that she will no longer be able to have a child of her own. It is the ultimate price for her to pay as her one desire (to conceive a child and have her own family) is denied her forever.

  • @kenshinhimura8133
    @kenshinhimura8133 4 года назад +1

    There are two explanations for the vast differences in the equivalent exchanges for each person. One you'll find out later and the other reason being Ed and Al's theory of human transmutation was even better than Izumi's. Also, Izumi's husband is not an alchemist he didn't take part in transmutation so he wasn't affected. Ed and Al both did the transmutation together so they were affected.

    Ed blames Hohenheim for their mother's death because he wasn't there. She missed him, she cried for him (even though she tried to hide her tears from the kids, Ed was observant enough to notice), she waited for him to the very end, yet he didn't even show up to the funeral. In Ed's mind, if he was there he could have helped her.

  • @NateLeonhart
    @NateLeonhart 4 года назад +9

    When Truth takes something from you, it does so in a way that is most ironic. Ed is the leader of his family, so it took his ability to stand on his own strength. Al wanted to feel his mother's warmth one more time, so it took his ability to feel anything. Izumi wanted her baby back, so it took from her the ability to conceive another child. If I were someone that wanted to create a bright future for myself and my family, it would perhaps take away my ability to see the future I want to create and so on. When Truth takes, it makes sure you regret it.

    Though personal experiences differ greatly, I feel like living without parts of your inner organs can be extremely tough considering nothing can be done to fix it, and accepting the pain is the only way to move forward. Lost arms and legs can be replaced with automail (though it won't feel exactly the same) and you can rehabilitate to the point of being your "old self" again. But it's all subjective I guess.

This story is anything but linear and never trust first appearances. There are characters who had the best intentions and ended up doing despicable things.

    Just one thing: In ancient Greece, science and religion where basically the same thing. Ancient Greek used to believe that by doing science (math in particular) they were unraveling their gods plan. Science was a way for them to communicate with their gods. This led a bunch of people to kill themselves when Pythagor came up with his ideas which changed people understanding of mathematics.
    So how did the greeks understood science? For them (according to Plato) they were two world. One world of abstract concept and absolute truth (which was the world were their gods were supposedly residing) and a world of sensations, lies and subjectivity. So, basically, if you wanted to interact with your gods you had to separate yourself from the material world in order to reach the world of ideas and truth to find real knowledge.
    So basically, if one was willing to do science, he had to relinquish everything that made him human and a part of the material world (mainly subjectivity) in order to reach the truth/the gods/the real world.
    I don't know i you can tell but Arakawa was heavily inspired by greek philosophy when she created FMA xD

    Don't look on if you've not seen the series anyone seeing this, spoilers abound
    The thing about Truth is that he's a bit of a bastard when it comes to this thing, every time a person tries Human Transmutation on their own - without a buffer - they face the consequences of it in what Truth takes from them.
    And each of them has their own unique torture for trying to play God.
    Izumi could've had another child but chose to try and bring the one she lost back, thus she cannot ever have that right again with Truth taking her womb.
    Ed was the eldest member of the family and the protector of his younger brother, so Truth took the left he stood on to do that - and then accepted the trade for his arm for Al's soul.
    Al was the one who wanted to feel his mother's love again most of all, so Truth took the warmth of touch and feeling from him.
    Hohenheim is a special case really, while he did lose something it was more psychological as he was forced to talk and be with countless people inside him.
    and Mustang lost the ability to see the Future he wanted so badly.
    The reason why people think Truth is sort of "evil" is the last one, as everyone else in this went into it willingly, while Mustang was forced into it, but Truth still gleefully took his sight from him as a "punishment"

    There is a narrative reason why the teacher "paid less" than the boys. *BUT* there is this guy who's a scientist that explained why it made real sense why they paid more than her, scientifically speaking. Unfortunately there isn't english subtitles, the video is in portuguese but TLDR: a human soul stores data. All the memories, experiences and knowledge that someone holds would be stored in what the anime would call a soul. To deconstruct and reconstruct and perform a human transmutation means u need to do with both the body and soul of the person u want to ressurect or whatever and every part of the process consumes energy that must be provided by the alchemist. Since the soul of an adult who has lived for a long time has more data stored than that of a newborn, the cost is higher.
    Like I said there is no english sub forr the video but here it is anyways: ruclips.net/video/DYlScWkjE_g/видео.html
    The video isn't about this issue but is trying explain human transmutaion as a whole.

El lost his leg bc of his ambitions of stepping too high, becoming more of what he is. Truth is the version of good that I like to believe in, he is cruel and realistic and only messes with people that are to break the order of the universe.

    Truth took the most precious things they had, for Ed was Al, for her was her reproductive organs

      By this logic Al must have really liked Ed's right leg, since that was taken too and you didn't list a cost for Al.
      You don't loose what's most valuable to you, you loose something ironic to your goals.

      @@WolforNuva No, he took what Ed most loved being Al and some more from Ed, it doesn't just ignore the fact it took Al in it's entirety, It only left Ed live to ponder on their decision

      @@WolforNuva The cost for Al WAS Al, it's not a single thing for them separatly, it's a conbined cost for the both of them for a single transmutation Al+Ed's leg was the cost for it

      @@WolforNuva You can't separate the cost.
      One lost his brother and his leg, the other lost himself and was separated from his brother (By being dead)

      @@thomaswellerton3783 It's made pretty clear in the series that each person looses 1 thing, you're free to speculate further of course, but the series gives a definite reason so any further speculation should be presented as such, not as fact.
      Plus Al+leg doesn't even make thematic sense with the idea of loosing what's most valuable to them; why add the leg as an extra cost? Did Ed value his leg as much as Al?
      Also Al didn't die, he lost his body. The distinction is important since his soul wasn't forced on and the series is very clear that you *can't* bring the dead back in any capacity. Since losing his body never forced Al to separate from Ed, separation as a punishment just doesn't work.
