Can I get the shower toilet combo in the pop top floor plan? Some of the European vans have both Pop Top and shower / toilet in the same van. Why can't Thor do this with the RIZE?

We've owned a Carado Axion with a layout nearly identical to that of the Thor Rize TM for several years, and have a VW Eurovan Camper with a layout nearly identical to that of the Thor Scope for 20 years before that. So I can say from long experience with both that both are great layouts. And one important thing the Thor product manager touched on is that with a very small RV like this, it's important to lay out the interior so it doesn't feel cramped. Both layouts succeed admirable at achieving that.
Now prospective buyers who require an RV no longer than 18 feet have two choices--a new Thor Rize or a used Carado Axion like ours (Carado is out of business so new ones are not available). These are the only two modern RVs on the North Amnerican market that are this length. your only other option is a DIY or custom built RV based on the same Ram Promaster 135:" wheelbase high roof platform,. Neither Ford Transit nor Mercedes Sprinter offer such a platform. The short Transit doesn't offer a high roof, and the Sprinter doesn't come in this length. If you want to learn about the Axion alternative and also see a detailed comparison of the two RVs, it's all on the carado Axion Facebook page. There's also a Rize Facebook page.
We've been very happy with the set of compromises that characterize the Rize/Axion layout. Especially with public sector campsites so hard to reserve these days (at the desirable campgrounds at least), we're been able to reserve sites limited to 18 ft. vehicles a number of times. The longer your RV the higher the probability that you'll be unable to reserve a site--especially during holidays and weekends. And that length lets you park in any standard car parkiing space (except in most parking garages), enabling you to use the RV as a second car. Such a length in also inherently stealthier. The Axion is stealthier than the Rize, however, because most of its telltale ports are hidden behind plastic panels along along the bottom of the van (though that also means you have to squat down to access them). On the other hand the Axion lacks those extra seatbelts (though they can be added), and I like the light-colored Rize cabinetry vs. the dark-colored Axion cabinetry.

Picking up our Rize with rear bathroom this week - can’t wait. I’m a real estate broker and intend to primarily use it as a mobile office, with the ability to also play on the weekends. Nothing like having your own, private bathroom and office (complete with drinks, etc.) while working on the road during the day. If you’ve not driven one, they are awesome. It has such a tight turning radius you can pull a u-turn on a side street with plenty of space left over, and it fits nicely in a small parking spot. Seriously cool rig!

    Four years full-time, Trovato 59K.
Up till now the only all weather floor plan, van in existence.
Heavy rain, enter through the rear onto shower pan, hang up your gear, done. Moisture stays out of the main cabin and heat stays in.
    Compare that to:
Open the slider, step on towels? Then what? Where do you put your wet gear to dry?
    Enter through the cab?
Seems like a real hassle, that would get old.
(Rear bath includes dedicated exhaust fan and heating duct.)
    For a quick hose off:
Take the showerhead outside, shower off, step onto shower pan, do feet, done.
It would be too difficult for me to be full-time with any other floor plan

Go Thor Go!! I have been dreaming of retiring to snowbird in a camper van since my Aunt bought one in the late '60s, but with the insane price of most B's I have assumed for years that it would be a used van. I have a service dog, and a reliable *quiet* generator is a must for him to be left safely in the van. I don't need a ton of fancy pants systems, just a kitchen, bathroom, place to sleep, and nice cool dog. That "M" floorplan is like you read my mind. I can even sell my car because the HOA has nothing to whine about since it's under 20 feet. Thanks Thor!

Hi Steve - thank you! I’m a soon to be solo traveler and appreciate the smaller vans. I’ll be full timing it, so I have my fingers crossed for a few options. Most important is a lithium option like on the Sequence (which is a bit to big for me). The Mastervolt system! Please! As an option of course. And also the Thule roof ladder. It should fit in the wet bath like the Sequence I would assume. So glad you did the cassette toilet having as much fresh water is extremely important for boondocking. I don’t think I would ever stay in a campground, thus the need for the lithium bank to run the AC and appliances without a generator, even if it’s quiet , doubt its quiet enough for city stealth camping. Please consider it as an option for us full timers. It’s a deal breaker for me. If it was an option I’d put down my down payment tomorrow!
PS even though the other van isn’t a fit for me, love the idea of a cabinet AC, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. Very creative!

    • @phthisics
      @phthisics 3 года назад

Sounds great if you just compare RVs by the spec sheet, and forward-facing rear seats are much safer. But there's a reason why Thor deleted the bathroom in the RV (the Scope) with the forward-facing rear seats. No RV in North America has ever had both such seats and a full bathroom. Perhaps you're thinking of various 20 ft. vans. But such longer platforms are not comparable.

With the loss of the Carado Axion from the US market a couple of years ago I didn't think any large coach manufacturer would produce another Class B on the short Ram platform. My preference is for the 18M but I would like to see an all electric model with double the solar, lithium batteries, no generator, no propane and an induction cooktop. Also lose that folding sink in the bath area, it's a lousy design and simply not necessary when the kitchen sink is two steps away.

We have been looking at the 2023 Thor Scope and the few things I can't understand (meaning why they aren't included) are:
    1) Why there isn't a spare tire. That's a major deal breaker. It's like another $1000 to get a mount and tire added.
    2) Why there isn't a toilet paper holder in the wet bath like there is in the Sequence.
    3) Why a tablet/tv holder isn't standard.
    4) Mosquito/bug nets aren't included in the rear/side doors and the front windows.
    5) Also, I forgot when I checked out the Scope at the dealership was the space underneath the pull-out bed. I'm guessing there is no additional space for storage?

Nice video, good level of detail. Have to admit I was surprised by the, um, level of unbridled enthusiasm in the discussions of cassette toilets and portable-potties. "A lot of our customers love having cassette toilets," "very very popular...absolutely love them." I guess when faced with the woods as an alternative these are good items to have, and I recognize your product manager is there to sell his product. But honestly I just can't see lugging a full (and heavy) cassette toilet into a public restroom as something I'd "love" doing.
Kidding aside, I did have a couple questions regarding weights and capacities: 1) reference was made to the 5,000 pound hitch. With this engine and a 1500 chassis, can this rig tow a 5,000 pound trailer? If so, would that affect the cargo carrying capacity? 2) On the OCCC, I was pleasantly surprised to see the 1,500+ pound cargo capacity, again given that this is a 1500 chassis. The built-ins are nice especially for a rig this size, but I'd think the OCCC would be diminished given the weight of the built-ins on this chassis Great news if it can handle this weight, I just wanted to get confirmation.
Thanks again for the detailed video. The market niche for these new products should be served well. Dave

We have a Carado Axion with the same layout as the Rize TM--but our Axion has a real toilet. And I agree with you 100%--especially since you still have to find a dump station for your gray water. The fact that cassette toilet users on RUclips say to NEVER empty your cassette at a friend's house tells you all you need to know about the things...if you want to find out more about the Axion, which is out of production but available used, see the Axion Facebook page. Thee you can also ask owners about trailer hauling capabilities, since Axions are pretty mucyh identical to Rizes in this regard, and some owners there routinely haul pretty big cargo trailers around with them. Note that the Promasters all have the same engine and drivetrain, so the 1500 is actually your best bet for pulling a trailer.

We have a Hymer Aktiv and have never worried about where to empty the cassette - campground bathrooms, rest area bathrooms, or campground dump stations, and even our own bathroom at home are all good options. I would not shy away from doing it at a friend's house, either. It's not that heavy, and it has wheels and a telescoping handle.

The bed pulls straight out--very straightforward. Our Axion bed requires removing all the cushions and flipping out a bed board and its floor support--the Rize's is way better. There's a notch in front to accommodate the raised platform behind the cab. I watched a salesman do it at the dealer in my area.

these seem nice but missed their mark. scope: why would i need so much wardrobe room or a pop top if its a week ender or tail gating? i would rather have a wet bath, a pop top, less wardrobe room. Rize: the only bed in it, buts up against a disconnect breaker. they need to think about a couple of changes to really be a complete B camper. if your listening, a small wet bath is worth its weight in gold for an afternoon , the weekend, or more. its almost everything for a B camper to exist. SLEEP, COOK, WASH, AND COMFORT STOP, they are daily needs, if they dont have it, a pickup or minivan do as much or more and way less money. under counter A/C is very clever, wardrobe closet instead of wet bath, not so smart. put a wetbath in the scope and i think a lot more people will buy it, including me. im in the market, but it must have a wet bath. and yes that would be hot water standard, actually strange that it does not have it.

I’ve decided after years of looking at Class B van conversions. I’m not going to buy one. There is no way that even the lowest priced dodge ram van conversion is worth over $80,000. I came close to purchasing a Carado Banff. This dealer dropped the price from $78,000-$52,000. By the time I saw the ad it was too late all of them had been purchased.
What a massive markup these vans have. The Tellaro Van which is a notch above the scope was selling at $71,000 at a Texas dealer. The price now has increase to $98,000. When I saw that I decided OK I’m out I lost interest good luck guys.
You could purchase a massive Luxury 32 foot trailer with two queen beds a washer and a dryer a dishwasher 2 to 3 pop outs starting at $52,000.
Don’t give me that ridiculous excuse that trailers are stick and staple put together. Van manufacturers are using about 1/10 the amount of material that it takes to build one of these massive trailers. And they want about $40,000 more for a finished van.. This industry has been so hyped I believe it’s ballooning and I will just wait.

Class B plus, C, and A hybrids, are excellent choices and can be had in smaller sizes if that's important, and lower price tags to boot. If a 17'9" length model is absolutely desired, then the outfitter prices have to be in line as well. Otherwise, DIY or hire an outfitter to do just enough to get going, so the total work can be done over time. But the saving$ will be substantial. Current prices are inflated in general, but discounts come and go so don't stop looking. Or, waiting a while may make money sense.
