    China's Belt and Road Initiative is the most ambitious infrastructure project in modern history. It spans over 60 countries and will cost over a trillion dollars. The plan is to make it easier for the world to trade with China, by funding roads, railways, pipelines, and other infrastructure projects in Asia and Africa. China is loaning trillions of dollars to any country that's willing to participate and it's been a big hit with the less democratic countries in the region. This makes the BRI a risky plan as well. But China is pushing forward because its goals are not strictly economic, they're also geopolitical.
    To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

      There is a mistake in the map used in this video. Taiwan is a part of China, so it should also be stained with red in the map.

      If you think there is a controversy over the possession of Tainwan, then please use specific color to indicate this controversy. If you think Taiwan is not a part of China, then please state your reason, for this position goes against mainland Chinese and many Taiwanese as well.

      JavierCR25 dude see their earlier investments in countries like sri lanka. These are of same infrastructure development of railways ports both air and water. They profit like no other with conditions of importing only chinese men to work in their projects, and when they are unable to pay the "loans", they end up in a debt trap like sri lanka with 95percent of GDP going to repay loans. Thus completely dependent on china. Best of luck to all countries participating in this. 😂😂but check their track record of countries invested.

    Although I am an American and love democracy, there is one thing I must admit. The key to China's continued success over the past few decades was its lack of democracy.
    In my opinion, the key problem of democracy is that it forces politicians to focus on short term issues that can be completely solved, or shown to be solving withing a presidential term in order to get reelected or in order for their party to get reelected. Think about it. In US presidential elections, we almost always hear about job growth or fighting terrorism. Why? Because people can see the results of presidential actions on those factors relatively quickly. Your average unemployed voter will be happy if he gets a job within the next four years. However, because of this focus on short term growth, long term issues are largely ignored.
    Take green energy as a perfect example. It is a great idea in the long run; it will provide lots of high paying jobs in the future while simultaneously helping combat climate change. The only expense is the loss of obsolete trades. Even ignoring the fact that the workers in such obsolete industries can be trained, a transition to green energy would be a large boon overall for America. But people didn't vote for Clinton who said that she would take away coal jobs and support green energy. She was attacked viciously by Trump for this and Trump got support from coal country by vowing to protect coal jobs.
    American manufacturing is another great example. Trump got the support from the Rust Belt by vowing to protect American manufacturing and he was able to win that region and win the general election due to this key support. But in the long run, allowing for more efficient manufacturing processes such as automation, even at the price of American jobs, will be a boon overall. It would decrease production costs, make American goods far more competitive on international markets, and decrease prices for American consumers. The people would save more money, companies would reap greater profits and America's trade deficit could be drastically mitigated. But since the voters want their jobs now, anyone who voices such plans is sure to lose the support of the Rust Belt.
    Contrast this with China. The communist party has utter control and as a result, they can focus on long term growth and change without worrying about how the citizens would react. They will invest in Africa to get a foothold on the continent for generations to come. They will go ahead with OBOR in order to establish trade relations with much of Asia and even parts of Europe and exert influence over them. They will put plans into motion that will yield fruit decades later in their quest for global dominance. This is why China is so brutally efficient.
    The truth is that a dictatorship that truly works with the goal of promoting the well-being of the country will always be far more efficient than a democracy composed of uneducated masses.
    In a democracy, victory goes not to the best candidate, but to he who can best read the electorate and connect with it.
    Edit: Some people seem to be confused and I may not have made it clear enough. I do still believe democracy is better at protecting the rights of the people especially since in order to get elected, the candidates have to connect with the people and actively campaign for their votes. Because of this, they are responsive to the voices of the people and their rights are secured. However, what I was trying to argue was that a dictatorship like China's allows for its government to pursue drastic change in order to increase the power of the country as a whole on the international stage.

    • @musicalsanctuary9678
      @musicalsanctuary9678 6 лет назад +426

      The only way a democracy can be more efficient than a dictatorship that truly wants to promote the interests of the country is for the overwhelming majority of the electorate to be highly educated and focused on long term change.

    • @musicalsanctuary9678
      @musicalsanctuary9678 6 лет назад +213

      Honestly, part of the problem is that young people, especially those in college don't vote. I hope that more people in my generation will realize this and vote in elections once we turn 18. Not just the general election, but midterm, state, and local elections too.

    • @cswess7256
      @cswess7256 6 лет назад +137

      +Musical Sanctuary I understand your point of view and even somewhat agree, but theres a big part your missing. Like you said, people are more focused on relatively short term change, which mainly consists of domestic issues like job growth, healthcare, and education (and its price), but why? Because these are things that actually improve the quality of life of a person. People dont care about having a heavy world influence if their own lives suck, only once they and their family are okay and their futures protected will they be interested in more long term things, and of course, a democracy's job is to protect its people's interests, so the government responds to these people's demands. China on the other hand doesnt have to do this as you mentioned, but as a result, living conditions there are awful for the average person and the jobs they have are mostly sweat shop jobs.

    • @cswess7256
      @cswess7256 6 лет назад +62

      This is a very common trend, as when the US was first rising to super power status in the late 1800s in the industrial revolution, although the economy was booming and the US' power expanding, the people were unhappy as work conditions sucked, everyone lived in slums, and the quality of life was pathetic.

    We have to remember that Japan, South Korea and Taiwan are all American allies, and the US has stationed military bases over there to keep China in check, allowing the US to be top dog.
    The USA wants to continue dominance in the world as the sole superpower, while China merely aims at creating a multipolar world in which America will have to deal with an equal rival.
    China's history is marked by self-sufficiency, and depending too much on foreign nations can be a risky deal. If the relationship goes sour, the trade partner may back out and starve your country.
    So, as a national security, China needs to find new trade routes, and FAST!

      silvervixen007 your damn right there-China is playing the long game and if it pays off she will reap a lot of rewards. I’m from the U.K. and we did something vaguely similar (although not anywhere near as stealthy-no need to back in the industrial revolution I guess), by making sure we controlled trade routes-we did it by force but China is doing it with money but if it works China will be in a very favourable position. And we in the West have had a large hand in making this happen due to our greed and desire for cheap manufacturing. Which I’ll readily admit I’ve been part of-I think the best way to try and keep China in check even a little bit is for the West to focus more on India, I can’t see it happening though. To me it’s a foregone conclusion that China will control many trade routes in 10-20yrs time and she will have a tremendous amount of “soft” power influence as well as the military hardware to back it up

      although, while Vox is at it, I'd also appreciate a video on how they've been bribing foreign politicians into supporting Chinese positions, atrocious human rights records, the fact China has an emperor again in all but name (once his new 12 point plan goes ahead -next few months.) China has also been ramping up their military and has also gotten several of the countries here, economically indebted to them, which they then take in return for favors, not just ports. they may be going about world domination 'peacefully'. once this project is completed, America could seriously have its world dominance threatened by China, and China might take the place of the world hegemony. depending on how America reacts, it could go cold war 2.0, or a new version of the start of the 20th century, with both competing against each other like the French and the German empires. if America loses in either situations, then we could very well be looking at china replacing america within a century or two (at most). which is no doubt their plan. it'll be intresting to see how a communist government will finally deal with the reality of having the world in its hands.
      As an Australian, things are looking a little scary here as well.
      in the last year, we've had one of our politicians bribed by state-owned Chinese businessmen into supporting the Chinese position in the south china sea and our mere suggestion of Chinese bribery threw them into a fit. when our government put in new anti-foreign interference laws, China threw a big tantrum and things were looking pretty nasty in the Chinese embassy. the Chinese own the agricultural sector and are encroaching on a few others. they've bought out most Australian businesses and investors in Papua new guinea, and they've got a port on lease down here too. on the top of that, they've also massively contributed to the housing market crisis we're going through at the moment. lot's of Chinese businessmen would launder money from China into Australia and the west, using housing as a piggy bank / black money cleanser. (though thankfully that's toned down a lot in the last year.) on top of that, they also own all of the mandarin media down here too, and they've used to suggest Chinese Australians to vote for particular politicians, and have used it to recite stories of Australian racism on Chinese, and myths of Chinese students getting beaten up commonly on university campuses. propaganda, basically.
      on top of that, they was this korean pop girl down in China who was waving a Taiwanese flag after one of her performances, and china forced her to do a public apology to the chinese government for supporting the existence of Taiwan. (which China doesn't considor legitimate.

The United States maintains such an influence due to their ability to launch a big attack anywhere around the world with the least discomfort, look at the number of military bases they have around the world. Britain did something similar during its days. Don't think those ports are just for trade. The one in Djibouti is a Naval Base. China wants to control the trade channel and the military might. If you see those locations you will see. Its not that hard to decode.

Americans need to see that they are lacking and falling behind and the only way to do so will be for them to be challenged. Having competition will force America to innovate and look towards the future rather than still arguing for coal energy or making goods in America. When the us and the ussr were the two superpowers America started investing to have better education and economy in order to prove itself. America needs to get off its high horse and develop itself rather than becoming comfortable with where it is. China is the opposite of America. America has freedom of religion but suffers a countless number of cults and Christian schools brainwash nationwide with the 100 million pop who believe in the existence of angels. America has freedom of speech but then fake news produced by certain interest groups are manipulating the nation on everything. America has deregulation from the government but then infrastructure can barely be built and jobs are moving out of the nation. America has rule of law but then millions of gangsters can get away with the punishment as long as they don't get caught obviously. These typical American problems, however, don't exist in China simply because China just do the opposite on these issues, regulating religions, restricting mediums and internet, banning firearm, stated regulated economy, the official crackdown and witch hunt on organized gangs. Of course, China has its own problems, but they are caused by the flaw of the Chinese system rather than the American one.

      Sure the US government is not financing projects like the CCP, but many of those projects being funded by China will fail, and I do not believe that the US government is supposed to make large state run companies that gamble with tax money. I'm from Serbia and I can confirm that China already invested and built serval important infrastructure from highways, bridges, railways and energy and what they are doing exactly? They give to the country loan with low interest rates and grace periods up to 20-30 years, but only condition is that has to build Chinese company with Chinese workers and when they finish one project they are moving on to the other and so on and so on. They are returning big amounts of money right away because their government ruled companies are making profits.
    More stable country is they give greater period of delayed payment, and if they not return they will take control of the project for long time.
    Why Serbia? They bought ports in Athens and Thessaloniki and if they have stable infrastructure to the Budapest they have win the jackpot.
    As I understood they are building big warehouse close to the Belgrade where highways for Budapest, Zagreb, Sofia and Thessaloniki intersect and railway passing true plus there is two rivers Danube and Sava.

      Have you seen Chinese infrastructure? They can build decent structures when they want to, but much of the Belt and Road is a both a quick cash-grab and a way to gain influence in other nations. They don't really need to build high quality structures if that's all they want, and you better believe that subpar ports and rails and pipelines are what you're going to get. That is unless China will stand to lose as a result of shoddy infrastructure, so the pipelines might be alright.
