I'll admit that I lowkey cried when jet said that he was going to be ok and then when they left the room, toph goes and says "He's lying"
This show loves to make everyone go on aboard the feels train Jesus
same. when the ember island players told what they call was his story I was mad about how they comicalized it but I think it was all out of frustration. that whole episode was them being pissed that some one took their hardwork, their myazaki and turned it in to bad actors cosplaying and censors saying "you can't show death on tv!!"
Crumble Muffin
Definitely man. Too sad.
I still get my tear Rolling.. it was impactful
Same 😓
when toph said "hes lying" i got chills 💀
Zukko: “Did Jet just die?”
Sokka: “You know, it was really unclear”
Pop up: For the record, Jet is dead.

Hard to forget that many of the people Team Avatar encountered were people whose lives had been effected by the war. Many children in the story were war orphans and child soldiers. It’s easy to criticize Jet, but his hatred of the Fire nation was very real and understandable.
@Stella Klespitz There really aren't many fire-benders against the war and the ones that are desert or keep to themselves rather than actively oppose the regime. Sure, the show definitely showed that the fire nation was no hive mind however there was no formal opposition to the war in from the fire nation's people.
Hama was the same as jet yet nobody hated on her
@AgarioGaming99 Um, I think you have their situations backwards. Plenty of people like, sympathize with and are fans of Jet. Myself included. I don't know anyone who actually likes Hama. Sympathize with, yes. Her story is sad and her actions are explainable. But they are deplorable. Same with Jet's. But he definitely gets more sympathy from fans, possibly because he's young and attractive and we get more of him. Also he didn't scar the characters for life since his plan failed, unlike Hama who taught Katara to blood bend after all like she wanted, and he was somewhat redeemed as he died. All those factors considered, I nust feel like it's just easier to sympathize and like Jet more. I know before he came back in Book 2, I didn't really care for him, but getting to know him more, with his adventures involving Zuko and his eventual brainwashing, I came to really love him and feel connected to him. As for Hama, I still despise that witch, I feel sorry for her, but I still hate her and I see others blasting her like I do online every time her name is mentioned. I don't know if I'd feel the same way if I got to see her again and get some more screentime with her or something, but who knows. There doesn't feel like there's any room for growth with her. She's too set in her ways and her life is practically over so she'll most likely die ed be with this horrid mindset. It's easier to respond to someone with a more hopeful outlook like Jet tried to be, before he got sidetracked. I honestly think the fan base shares my mindset when it comes to these feelings between the two.
@@gaaraxnaru "But he definitely gets more sympathy with fans, possibly because he's young and attractive"
No, I think you have this situation backwards, the only reason people like you even defend Jet is because he is young and good looking. Also, yes Jet did scar characters for life, permantly, with death. He destroyed fire nation villages countless times, killing several people in the process . Hamas' actions were understandable, but horrid, and so was Jets. The only difference between them is that jet is attractive and hama is not, the only difference you have chosen to pick out
@@leilasaid6232 1. You are purposely misconstruing my comment. I mentioned that these were two reasons one might like his character. I also said that we spent more time with him, his plan failed and he was redeemed as he died. Stop trying to create a strawman.
2. What proof do we have that he's a killed countless villages before? As the video mentioned, he didn't choose all out warfare until he had the means to. The video mentioned the blasting jelly, but there was also Aang and Katara, who he couldn't have succeeded in doing the plan without. So it's highly unlikely he's done this before. If there's proof of him committing war crimes, like mass genocide, successfully that I don't know about, please share.
3. Weren't you just saying that Jet was getting hate? And yet you seem to agree with me that he's definitely sympathized more with than Hama.
I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with this, but it won't work. I know what I'm talking about when it comes to this fandom.
That scene when team Avatar is flying over Lake Laogai, everyone is happy to be with Appa again, but Katara is looking down to the water and crying. That moment was so powerful.
Jet's parents were killed by Firebenders.
Jet was killed by a former Earth King advisor
Yep, as the video said, there was irony in his death. He was killed by someone he would've considered to be on his side.
Really?! noooo waaaaayyyyyy
And apparently a fire bender happened to be (nearly) his ally
Thankfully Jets friends weren’t killed by Waterbenders
gaaraxnaru it shows that not everyone can be trusted. There will always be good and bad people in every parts of the world. It's just sad in how jet suffered a lot as a kid and yet he ended up dead.
Jet deserves to have a nice and relaxing afterlife :(
I like to think he'd be reunited with his parents and his next life will be more peaceful
The world of Avatar does not have an afterlife (as far as we know). Iroh went to the spirit world to look for his son and could not find him.
F_F_F_ I think we just didn’t see it. Iron chose the spirit world, Rava told Wen she’d be with him through all his lives. The concept of an after life is there is just very vague and up for interpretation like it is in real life.
should have showed him in the spirit world in legend of korra
ZA C but that’s the spirit world with sprits practically mini gods and oni maybe he’s were people and regular(regular in that world I mean) animals go .
When Jet was dying, I legit thought his archer dude was going to put him out of his misery...
Since Jet most likely had internal bleeding, Longshot may have put him out of his misery to save him the pain. But of course, they can't show that.
@@r3mybeets552 Nah he aims the bow at the tunnel so no more Dai Li agents can enter.
To be fair though every time I watch that scene there's a second where I think he's actually gonna.
@@r3mybeets552 No he doesn't, he aims at the tunnels and keeps on watch.

Avatar has one of the best character studies.
Like wow-
These characters feel real just because of how diverse and well executed they are.
honestly why can't we have more shows like this
They make you feel like Jet
Dunkey reference
Executed
True,
If you like character studies you should try Hunter x hunter (2011). It has a bit of a slow start, but it has the best characters and character studies I have ever seen.
Jet was a realistic depiction of the monsters that wars creates. People that can be good and caring but that have there moral views warped by pain and suffering transforming theme in to monsters.
Those are the people that perpetrat wars.
Poor Jet, I know he wasn’t always a good person, still his death was unexpected, and the fact he was helping Appa makes you see him in a new light!
G Rodriguez Well was by no one is good.
@@justchilling704 *He is speaking the language of gods!*
But I think what makes this show great, is that there is no black and white good and evil. Jet wasn't honorable, but that doesn't mean he was malicious or evil. He was misguided like Zuko and even Katara, but unlike them, there was no person to keep him grounded. I don't think that it's Jet isn't a good person, but more like he was someone with good intentions, but poor execution.
I've always found Jet to be a very interesting character, so that hasn't changed, but I hadn't considered how he contrasts with the rest of the cast and now I really wish he'd gotten more of a shot long term... Fantasy really does suffer from a lack of regular characters... Everyone is a noble or royalty or spiritually gifted in some manner where something literally supernatural has chosen them; having a regular person is a rarity.
EmethMatthew sokka and suki were both normal characters! They could both fight but they werent any more special then jet!
@@maliaareneee I meant, as the video discussed, in terms of upbringing, not just bending ability. Sokka was still the son of the tribe chief and Suki was trained as a warrior with her people. In the pseudo-medieval/feudal culture those would both be higher classes than the peasants that Jet and his family were.
EmethMatthew Depends , LOTR, among others like Attack on Titan have plenty of normal characters, your point however is still valid, but interestingly enough many “normal” people have blue blooded ancestry.
@@justchilling704 Oh certainly, and that's part of what's silly about beliefs about bloodlines is that if you go back far enough everyone is related to SOMEONE awesome and SOMEONE terrible... So I have less of a weird feeling about it when it's some distant ancestor thing that gets wrapped up in the characters' legend... But that's something I DO like about LOTR very much is it is intentionally this major epic world with ancient kings and immortal elves, but the hobbit protagonists are creatures who seem to have all the disadvantages of the other creatures combined, except that their one major strength is they don't have the hubris those other creatures carry with those more illustrious histories...
That's the kind of story I'd like to see more of... And for all the discussion of all the fantasies that copy LOTR there seem to be very few that I know of that actually have a true hobbit-type "normie" protagonist; most have some version of Aragorn as the protagonist every time...
The last Airbender is a different mold than that Western Fantasy mold, but it hasn't actually occurred to me until this video that the trope of "special" characters was present... I agree it's extremely downplayed, because once Sokka and Katara and Toph and Suki left their homes there wasn't much discussion of their backgrounds, but it's still present and I didn't notice it until the emphasis was put on what makes Jet different.
EmethMatthew True, LOTR inspired fantasies don’t often maintain a hobby like average joe type of character, and on Avatar the only character that’s the closest to normal is Toph, and that’s only if her family aren’t “nObLe” 😂 but yeah Avatar does suffer from a toned down special characters syndrome, wonder what the story would have been like with more consistent normal or average joe characters.
Imagine if jet joined team avatar and became best friends with sokka as they both aspired to be leaders which could've brought some conflict in the group as well
Ironic, for all he did against the Fire Nation, he was killed by his own countrymen.

The first time i saw jet as a kid i think he was a total jerk
but now as an grown dude i really feel sorry for him, he was just a víctim of the one hundred years War
Jet was treated like the punch line because, in the eyes of the Fire Nation, people like him are a punch line.
Dam
Exactly what I thought too . It worked both as a censorship, and a very dark element in the story
Damn as a kid I didnt know he died but coming back years later watching that scene again hit hard
Sometimes I feel like they should have left Jet paralyzed instead of killing him. It would have been just as if not more tragic and perhaps he could have learned to fight again and had an arc with Teo(The kid with the flying wheelchair.)
Kawaii Thulhu Yeah that’s a really good idea!
Please happen
You wouldn't have had the same feels. You would just think of him as another character like Teo.
I think Jet's arc was always about the struggle to let go or else be a slave to his own obsession and anger. It was only going to end one of two ways. Either he comes to terms with the past and moves on with his friends or we watch his complete self-destruction. I think him dying instead of becoming paralyzed is the better narrative and thematic road. There is no second chance to become better/find peace in his life now. Being disabled would have been sad, but it opens paths for redemption that are no longer on the table with his death. He was so young and full of potential if he was only able to channel his emotions and general goal of fighting for the freedom of conquered nations in a healthy way. It is incredibly tragic, especially when you look at how the Earth Kingdom's government played a heavy hand in his final outcome. He was killed by the nation he spent his horribly misguided life trying to protect. Even better, they were just as cruel and unethical as he was before coming to Ba Sing Se.
I also loved how it had parallels to Zuko and Katara's journeys, which I'm sure was intentional. I wondered more than once if Jet would have ended up in a better place as a better person if he had crossed the finish line too. He was what they were in danger of becoming if they never did.
@@sarahtaylor4264 there’s also the fact that while Smeller Bee and Longshot were willing to move and try and start over Jet was utterly obsessed with proving Iroh and Zuko were fire-benders.
Jet, the guy who just died.
Jet the guy who literally lived to fight
It was network censorship. That's why they made the joke. They wanted to show his death in a more clear way and Nickelodeon said "you are not showing a kid dying on screen". So they gave Toph the line "he is lying" when he said he was going to be ok.
The words "by any means neccesary" and "for the greater good" can and had destroy inocent lives
''I don't think there is a single character that could match his hatred''
What about Hama? She captured and was presumably killing fire nation citizens for probably years. She was broken by the fire nation and lashed out in the most cruel way possible. She didn't hold back for the elderly, she even tried to abduct that old man we meet. At least Jet gives them a fair fight (however fair you can call attacking an old man). Hama literally took control of their body. That is way more intrusive than anything Jet did. And Jet has the defense of still being a kid, his childhood shaped him. Hama got captured as an adult and chose to do the things she did. Knowing full well her actions came from a place of hatred and revenge. Jet literally thinks every fire nation boy or girl is the enemy and that they all deserve to die. While Jet might be filled with blind hatred, Hama is filled with conscious hatred. I think I would give Hama the edge.
@dennisbaily Key word ADULT Jet’s family was taken away at the age of 8 He Was forced to mature he had His childhood Taken away. His hatred is understood and he has burning hatred Hama could NEVER compete with that
@@youraverageweeb3132 Yeah, seeing friends and family being taken away bit by bit, being starved in a prison while everyone dies around you and being forced towards inhumane practises can't compete at all . What was I thinking.
Dennisbaily can’t tell if that was a diss or not
Dennisbaily ik Hama is very misunderstood
Sora Adachi well it was a diss
i love jet so much. it disheartens me when shows try to lighten/sugarcoat trauma to make it all about forgiveness and overall portraying it in a pretty way. trauma makes you angry. it fills you with so much hate towards people who even resemble the ones you've hurt you. it makes you generalise and go to extreme lengths and its so important to understand that you're not always going to be the victim. other shows/characters will portray the "i hurt someone but i'm traumatised so i'll run away whilst the others chase me and say something about how i'm afraid of myself" and honestly that narrative fucked me up a ton.
things are going to be your fault. you're going to get angry. you're going to be in the wrong and you're going to have to apologise.
jet gives a little bit of hope to traumatised kids like i was. things aren't going to be pretty when you're in pain *and that's okay*
thank you slice for reminding me how much that rebellious bastard means to me
damn. so true. very well said, friend.
@@chramoso thank you!
Yes
dopamine thank you ppl hate Jet but forget what the fire Nation did
thank you. I keep saying this over and over again, Jet was a traumatized child, and while i know that it's not an excuse for his actions, it explains them and helps us understand why he did what he did.
i hate when people just dismiss evrything about his character and brush it off with 'he's a jerk'.
this show is truly the gift that keeps on giving
Ikr
As aoon as you compared the ideological differences between jet and aang with malcom x and martin Martin Luther king jr. I gave you a like . Bravo sir.
That was an amazing comparison.
I have said for a long time that JET was by far one of the most perplexing and eye grabbing characters in the series and he helped advance the plot in the earth kingdom in such a unique way. I love the breakdown here and has solidified Jet as one of my favorite characters in the show.
I think you missed the whole point of Jet. He was a character showing what would happen to Sokka and Katara if they kept going on the road they were heading.
First, let's talk about Sokka, his character arc is about becoming a great leader, and Jet showed him what happens when you don't take in the input of the people you're leading. You become unhinged.
Now, let's talk about Katara, her character arc is all about dealing with her grief about her mother and the cycle of war. Lost leads to grief than to anger than back to lost. After Jet’s and Katara’s loss and grief, they dehumanized the killers of their families the fire nation, and the southern raiders because it's easier to believe that they are monsters than that they are people. So Jet attacked any one of the fire nation and Katara used Blood bending against a southern raider. Katara realized this cycle before it was too late but Jet didn't.
I love how you analyze characters like this.. I never really thought twice about jet but this gives so much more depth to the show and and so much more to think about while watching. It makes his character truly tragic and painful to watch. And to an extent, everyone understands his pain.
Jet's story was truly heartbreaking thanks for the insight. Slice I love you back.
Jet was definitely one of most interesting side characters in the show.
He was "Battle Born" had his childhood stolen away, you gotta feel his pain
My question
How did the Gaang find out Zuko knew Jet? Like in the ember island players Zuko is like Did Jet just die? And Sokka responds with You know it was really unclear.
It gets pushed off with nobody being like wait, you knew Jet?!
I just figured they already talked about him offscreen haha
Well, they say his name in the play, so anyone could ask that question.
Jet was my favorite. All the fan fiction.
Cabbage man was even more tragic.
I wish Jet stayed longer. You know how cool it would have been to see a rivalry between him and Zuko?
If Jet didn't find out about them being Firebenders they could've been friends
Your commentary was dope about Jet. Heartfelt about a misunderstood and complex character.
Jet honestly made me sad. He had so much potential to break from his trauma and learn from it, instead he embodied his fears and let them control him. This is something that is commonly played out in everyday people.
Narrator: Jet found motivation in hatred
Me not paying attention: oooh that face is some big mood!!
honestly thank you for continuing to talk about the last airbender
This makes me want to rewatch. Damn. I was also pretty young when I watched The Last Airbender the first time around. I don't think I knew how to appreciate the show. It sounds like it's time for a rewatch
You know what I realized
In his life he attacked innocent fire nation people
But he died fighting against evil earth kingdom people
Basically moral ambiguity is the hallmark of his character. As Aang said, anyone is capable of both great good and great evil, no matter what "side" they're on
One of the most memorable characters from Avatar the last airbender. He was so badass. The fact that he could go up against an airbender even though they hadn't been seen in over 100 years just screams badass. His character reminds me of Jason Todd a little bit, maybe that's why I like Jet so much.
The only time Zuko learns about Jet, was the ember island play. In which it was a goofy unclear death. So he learned that one of the party’s friend FREAKING DIED and he never heard about it again.
Jet was one of my favorites
"Jet is Avatar's Malcom X" and hes drawn like a Boondocks character
Jet DID represent the future. He represented the future where nothing changed and the cycle of violence was propagated once again.
Jet was such a compelling and sympathetic character
i’ve been following you for a while, and honestly this might’ve resonated with me the strongest because i’ve seen past peers fall victim to immersing themselves in their trauma and never escaping from it, and i’ll be honest i do get misty about it every now and again. and on a completely different note, really appreciate that you end every video with “i love you” because when i’m feeling melancholy, and hear that, it helps. I had the impression that Jet and the freedom fighters were based on the Peter pan movie "Hook" with Robin Williams from 1991, they share a lot of similarities.
As the number one fan of this show I never thought anyone can give me a new precpectiv about it, but you did. Amazing work keep up the good work
Damn, you just blew my mind with that instinct line. Never noticed!
Nico Inghilterra same 😭😭
I knew he was dead when I was 13, after many years of seeing "death signals" in media growing up. I could empathize with his trouble, but only from an outside perspective. He was... An innocent lost
i love how people who hate jet argue that he was a terrorist and a jerk and that he almost (notice this, *almost* )flooded an entire village killing everyone there, yet i bet you these are the same people who would go on a rant about how much they love anakin skywalker/ darth vader because he's such a complex and tragic character, even tho this guy literally wiped out all the baby jedies & killed bunch of innocent people & murdered some of his officers simply bc he had a bad temper. I'm not saying it's wrong to love Anakin bc let's be honest everyone loves anakin, but like, check your hypocrisy, people. Jet was a traumatized child with a deep seated hatred for the fire nation who simply had no one to help him and no one to guide him. Zuko was lucky, even tho he had an abusive father, his uncle loved him unconditionaly and it showed. Jet never had anyone to take care of him, instead he had to be the one taking care of other orphaned kids. And people also forget that there were good sides to this guy too (cared about his friends, helped people on the ship, loyal, had cool swords, etc.).
i personally love Jet (in case you couldn't tell) and it makes me kinda mad when people just dissmis his entire character because he 'was a jerk and is just better off dead'.

Zuko: am I a joke to you?
I loved this video! You're always able to go into such depth with your analysis. Out of curiosity, are you planning on doing any more of the Queens of Mewni series?
I’ve been waiting for this for so long
I have just watched this show for the first time about a month ago (yes, I apparently never had a childhood). Jet was a character that I kept thinking about, and how I wished they flushed out his character more and more, and I kind of wished he survived to see the war finally end
Wow. I never really thought of it. He really was the most tragic character... Thank u guys. This was really aewsome
i just recently finished an episode with Jet and Im really glad someone went to make a commentary on his character because when I was achild watching avatar I didnt remember Jet at all tbh. But noe that im older and rewatching this series Jet stood out so much to me in his first appearance, Yes... I knew he would definitely go against the avatar, sokka, and katara but just his morals and the fact he wasnt a bender, and just a normal character with grit and edge fascinated me alot and im glad i watched this to understand him more.
ok this is probably my favorite video!
I believe that ATLA (Avatar The Last Airbender) deserves more commendation and probably more awards that it has and is getting.
From the character build up to consistency to drama and also the way the audience is being carried along.
Then oh does it deserve more.
And obviously another shot on the live action movie please!
Thank you for showing me Jet's character from a new perspective!

The ting abut war is the longer it gots on, the more people die. A quick end to a war saves lives. But is incredibly hard to pull off. As you have to crush the will to fight in the enemy.
Katara & Jet are iconic.
*_[Great video.]_*
My neighbors banged the wall when I screamed " BY AN MEANS NECESSARY!"
This reminds me a lot of Hello Future Me's video on the Cycle of War in Avatar. I highly highly recommend that to anyone who wants to hear a breakdown of this same narrative but as it applies to all characters.
Does anybody else ever go into denial when a character dies and try to find any way that they can be alive?I just watched Jet die and I tried to find any comics or episode where he could be alive only to find out that he’s confirmed to be dead. Its honestly so painful 😭
i don't go into denial, i just ignore the fact that they're dead. It's been working with snape for years so i think i'll be fine. But to be honest knowing he's dead is so fucking painful. At least i know i'm not the only one lmao.
Jet was a terrorist. He literally (Including his friends) terrorized people (Robbing an old man as seen; let's not imagine what happened out of screentime).
In the finale of that episode he planned to flood an ENTIRE village. He knew there were people, children, elders, soldiers, enemies and people from his country.
He was obsessed that any living being from that certain nation were demonic and evil and HAD to be removed in order to end the war. At least that's how I understood him as a character in Book 1. I understand his points. His points seem understandable due to what the fire nation has done to him. It could technically apply to anyone (either fictional or real) who lives through his fate.
And again, he was obsessed with his idea. His idea of purging anything fire related (funny how he used to bomb a dam; flooding an occupied town with WATER because he hates the FIRE nation; props to the writers; he could have also bombed the city but this: Brilliant writing).
And that is what makes him a terrorist. He terrorized the people he thought were bad. Obviously not everyone born or even fighting for the fire nation is a bad person. I sometimes like to apply this way of thinking to any large scale nation being the attacking nation (See the French people during Napoleon, German people during Hitler, etc.). And I am not exluding people supporting acts of assault or terrorism. That's what makes a story good either: It is not entirely black and white but made alongside a grayscale. Hence why Book 3 took place on fire nation soil for a good chunk; making the viewer to understand there is more behind the militaristic and propaganda fueled attacking nation.
Again, Jet was a terrorist by definiton. The more tragic thing is: He never changed. As a character he never had the real redeeming chance of overlooking his ideals (or beliefs) in hating the fire nation but at least accepting that not everyone was bad there.
He even went to accuse two firebenders (who were refugees like him) trying to somehow infiltrate Ba Sing Se. As if every refugee there was everything but from the fire nation (Or even bending fire).
He hatred people for being able to motherfucking fire bend. He never changed his point of view. Neither in an open forest nor in a closed and locked up city. This is the true tragedy of Jet. He never had the narrative chance to change his, objectively, bad ideals (Not in fighting the fire nation at all; but the methods he used and likely never gave up).
Tl;dr: I hate adding Tl;dr's but in this case: Jet was a terrorist by definition and never had the narrative chance to change or rethink his hatred towards the fire nation. A reason why he is indeed Atla's most tragic characters besides Zuko, Azula and Momo.
I’d never even given Jet that much thought before. I think you have excellent points.
i remember being a kid and all my friends (who introduced me to this show) hated jet. i remember not getting it thinking maybe im just too young to understand why they hate him. i never really told them how i felt but i think they knew i didnt share their view. now that im older i know for sure i love jet as an anti hero of sort hes such a perfect character and i love his story
Jet was a character that was affected by the war unlike all the others. He didn't live in the South Pole away from the world. He didn't miss out on a hundred years of it and thereafter move from place to place, with all his loved ones with him. He didn't live in a rich household, safe and away from the troubles of the war. And he wasn't on the winning side of the war where his people and his home were safe.
When will you continue the queens of Mewni videos?

Sometimes I wonder if Jet didn’t die. I felt like he would’ve been helping Suki, Sokka and Toph on the airship fleet. Also even though his impact was small, he did play a part in helping save the world, by helping the team find Appa
i would like to see him reunite with duke and pipsqueak who left him and i wanna see him befriend haru
Couldn't agree more & glad you finally analyzed jet! I'd love to see an in depth look into ba sing se, everything about it is skewed, to the walls holding people in than people out. To the look at how dystopian it is that majority of the males have the same haircuts, much like how north Korea restricts that as it's freedom of expression, and so forth
jet was blinded by his own hatred and from his perspective he was a hero
Jet was so close to being good, the reason i stopped watching avatar as a kid was because he was treated so badly for believing in justice, although his methods needed to change, i couldn’t bare to watch that happen to a character i loved.
