One thing I don't understand about American culture is why bother to wear nasty dirty bacteria shoes inside your home! You might as well skip cleaning and mopping your floors if you're going to spread all those nasty bacteria from the bottom of your shoes back onto your carpet and flooring!
Most Americans don’t wear shoes inside there civilized. I go a step further and spray the bottoms of my shoes with Lysol just to help remove any bacteria before storing them near the door.
