    So glad you're back! I totally get having a year of events you don't want or should talk about online. I'm dealing with similar. But I'm happy to hear stuff about you when I can!
    Oh and as for EVs... love them! I don't have one but I've been excited following them get better and better. I might get a an electric truck one day? I need the utility, but stylistically would prefer something smaller.

    You get a Chevy Bolt? Your description sounds similar to the one my parents have... I actually think it is really cool and I'd get one myself if I saw a cheap enough one. A lot of people (including me) don't drive that far that often so it makes sense to have a cheaper one with a small battery for those times. You can always drive a used gas car or even rent one maybe or whatever when you have other places to go. No point paying tens of thousands of dollars for a huge battery you virtually never use.

    Since it's way back in 2012 and the range is so short, I imagine what you have is a 1st gen Nissan Leaf. I bought a 2020 Leaf in January, and it's delightful. Mine will get me about 230 miles on a charge, and while it uses the damnable ChaDeMo connector instead of the industry standard CCS, I've only had to fast charge it one time. And that was because when I bought it, the dealer had forgot to plug it in, and it was on 10%. I only drive these days to run errands around town, and I just charge it from the regular old 120V outlet on the front of my house.
    I was concerned when I bought it about jackass rednecks harassing me or vandalizing it, but no issues yet. Mostly my interaction with drivers of gas cars is leaving them behind at traffic lights. Even the current gen Leafs are among the slowest of EVs because they only have a single motor, and it's still way more than enough to smoke any gas car that isn't particularly sporty. It's hilarious.
    The main thing I try to espouse to friends about the EV isn't the ecological benefits, it's that they're convenient and super fun to drive. I don't have to go to sketchy gas stations, worry about having my credit card skimmed, and be subject to the whims of the oil prices. I just plug it in when it gets under 70% or so. Then when I'm out on the road, that instant torque is a blast. Not just for accidentally emasculating dude bros at traffic lights, but just for like merging onto the freeway or pulling out into traffic. You don't have to worry about getting up to speed because you _know_ you can. Then there's the fact that there's so much less in the drive train that could break... and that I don't have to take it for emissions testing... that as an electronics guy I actually understand how the whole drive train works...
    Anyway, enjoy! And I've totally done the thing of leaving the car on because it makes no noise and it's really hard to notice... 😂

    I think the future must be plug in hybrids. The electrical infrastructure doesn't seem equipped for it as of right now. plug in hybrids is a good start tough. His grace, Lord Pampers, will hopefully live in a more environmentally friendly world

    From my very non-expert point of view, people who are against electric vehicles seem fundamentally the same to me as people who were against cars when carriages were still a thing.
    Whether electric vehicles stick around for the long term or are replaced by something newer, the fact remains either way that fossil fuels are not sustainable. We are expected to have depleted them within the next hundred years. There's a chance we'll see it happen, and if we don't, our children certainly will. I can't wrap my mind around how this is somehow a political issue to some people.

  • @digitaljanus

    On the one hand, EVs do directly address a major cause of carbon emissions. On the other hand, they leave all the other drawbacks of a car-based culture in place: urban sprawl, unwalkable neighbourhoods, pedestrian fatalities, the necessity of owning a vehicle. I know that perfect is the enemy of good and that EVs are one of the easiest ways to get the people with power and money onboard with any kind of climate change mitigation but at the same time, that makes EVs a distraction, a band-aid solution to problems that would be better addressed by properly designed and funded mass transit, and walkable/accessible spaces for living, working, commuting, and recreation.
    I guess I'm saying I see EVs being an important part of our future, maybe as the industry pulls away from false Messiah tech bros and their empty promises towards actual established car companies mass producing reliable models, but they can't be where we stop with addressing climate change.

    EV's at the moment seem too heavy for what they are used for. If I could get an enclosed electric motorcycle at a reasonable cost, I'd buy one immediately. They do exist, but they cost bazillions.

    Hi, nice to see you! Was the tardigrade always there? Editing Maggie (spelling correct?, is on phone) game was really good, esp at the end with the old vhs effect, the speed-up read and the hands. Doesn't matter with the v the (gegen)light got you covered (literally!).
    To the EVs: For context I am from and currently living in Germany. I think the future of cars is electric l, it is more efficient by a large margin and other technologies are not their yet and will probably never be there. But the future of transportation isn't. The Future should be bikes + public transport and in combination how often it is possible. For this a lot has to be done, but it's the best option I think. I know in the USA the conditions for this are horrible. Nice channel who talk about this are "Not just Bikes" and "Adam something". The later has a conceise video about us- vs. european suburbs and the former has a lot of it to, but I would recommend for the beginng "Why we don't raise our children in the US" and his video about Cargo bikes. There is even a video out there from the "Orchestra of the Enlightenment" where one of them transports his two timpani with a cargo bike.

    EVs are fine. The problem with EVs is literally the issue you brought up in this video. A lot of it is also due to people wanting to slow or stop the growth of EVs.
    There is one more downside and that's just more tech related. Charging an EV is slower than gas. This'll require better battery technology/charging technology.
    Does your vehicle have regenerative breaking? I know hybrids have them, but don't know about full electric vehicles.

    I assumed when you said you bough half a car that you bought a motorcycle, which would have been a very odd choice to solve your problem.
    Also struggling on the freeway isn't just an electric car things lots of old junkers have that problem, my gas car red lines at at anything over 45 mph if there is even a hint of a hill. I'd love to replace it with an electric, even an old one like yours, the maintenance is so much easier on an electric, but I bought mine for $500 a few years back and that is really all I can afford and EVs just aren't that cheap yet.

    Welcome back! My blackpilled doomer prediction is that well before electric cars become the norm, we'll simply run out of petroleum reserves with which to make the plastics to manufacture ANY cars, much less the petroleum to run gas-powered vehicles.

  • @Colorcrayons

    Yes, EV are real cars. The only reason to like gas over elec is that combustion has been around for 100 years, and dumdumdoodoo brains can use them to blow coal. But its not like the average person can just fix their combustion engine anymore, as the engines have lost that end user ease and thus appeal for that reason.
    So really, besides range, elec is the way to go. But I imagine a nice future where we can rely on decent public transportation to get you from ashland to roseburg, and once at destination, pleasantly puttputt around in your own or rented elec vehicle.

    • @kidthorazine
      @kidthorazine 2 года назад

      well that and the fact that owning an EV if you live in most apartments is next to impossible. I don't have anything against people who own EVs but they really aren't the big solution to transit without some massive infrastructure changes.

  • @ouroboros78
    @ouroboros78 2 года назад

    Would obviously like to see us generally break away from car dependence but we'd really need a major government investment in new infrastructure to make electric broadly appealing and I feel like Republicans would rather keep electric cars as a culture war element for the near future :/
