  • Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) partnered with the National Park Service to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the first military burials at ANC on May 13, 1864. We are also commemorating the 160th anniversary of the Battle of the Wilderness, fought from May 5 to 7, 1864. Many of the first burials at Arlington were service members who were wounded in the Wilderness.

They gave “that last full measure of devotion” so our Republic could stand. I am humbled by the sacrifice all who reside there gave.

I have walked the hallowed ground at Arlington to find the markers of my friends from high school that came back from Vietnam in a box. R.I.P.

I served, active and reserve, from May 1973 to May 2009. I know more than a few fellow service personnel who have been laid to rest at Arlington. All are American heroes.

Sacred Ground does not need a religion to be sacred.
