  • Ian Cockburn is a survivor of one of the most harrowing health scandals in UK history. At just six years old Ian was battling childhood Leukemia, and during one of his final treatments was infected with Hepatitis C through a contaminated blood transfusion-a fallout from the UK's importation of unscreened blood products over two decades. His medical journey began with a dramatic evacuation to a UK airbase, then a fight against Hep-C, which threatened not only his life but his dream of serving his country.
Ian opens up about the subsequent government and NHS cover-up that prolonged the crisis, the personal and professional hurdles he faced due to the infection, and how he overcame these challenges to live a fulfilling life with his family. Despite being barred from joining the British Army in his youth due to his medical history, Ian's unwavering determination, inspired by military podcasts, led him to reapply as a reservist and volunteer police officer, achieving success in both endeavors.
The UK public inquiry's publication date is approaching, which Ian hopes will reveal the depths of the scandal's negligence which is still estimated to result in a death over four days.
Ian shares his mission to raise awareness and ensure justice for the victims.

My dad had me at either 48 or 49. My mom was either 38 or 39.
So when I was 18 over a decade ago, my dad was I think 66, and my mom was 56 and was already a cancer survivor.
Having old parents has been an entirely unique experience compared to my peers with much younger parents. We simply don’t have the same types of family situations or problems.
I have no grandparents left, whereas most people my age that I know still have almost all of them, if not all of them remaining, and some of their grandparents are actually younger than my parents.

I worked at a Make a Wish associated hospital. Most children with severe illnesses qualify for a Wish. My cousin’s son survived leukemia and was several months in remission when Make A Wish offered him a Wish. They chose a trip to Orlando. My cousin was shocked and kept telling them, “you are misinformed. He’s cancer free.” They told her it was their reward to him for fighting so hard.

In 2nd grade, we had a kid in school who passed to cancer. Garret.
He suffered. He was hurting. Always. On the rare occurrence that he was in school, he was not doing well from either a physical or a mental standpoint. His yearbook picture hurts me, as he couldn’t understand why they were expecting him to smile… He couldn’t. For lack of better explanation, his smile in his yearbook picture looked a lot like this emoji: 😕
He had a stroke on the playground that other kids had noticed and notified the teachers when half of his face drooped down. I didn’t witness that, thankfully. I was probably too busy jumping off of the highest part of the playground. He couldn’t…
    Rest in peace, Garret.

My 7 year old son has B type ALL. Ironically, his Dr. stated that if you’re going to get leukemia, that’s the one to get. My son is a little over a year into his treatment and has a year to go. But he is the bravest little kid I know based on what I have seen him go through. My heart goes out to you and your parents Mr Cockburn. God bless.

In 1997, Bayer and the other three manufacturers agreed to pay $660 million to settle cases on behalf of more than 6,000 hemophiliacs infected in United States in the early 1980s, paying an estimated $100,000 net to each infected hemophiliac.

Its nice to see this being talked about as i was given infected blood when i was a baby and i never found out until i was 25, it ive had to have multiple operatikns including my spleen being removed, im quite lucky as it could have been alot worse. But what's quite sickening about the whole thing was they knew the blood was infected for years before I was born but still used it and if they had no choice but to use it they didn't even make an attempt to contact people who may have been infected, the government should have sent out a country wide letter asking if you had a blood transfusion between these years go to your doctor for a blood test.

We lost my father and 2 of his brothers to HIV and his third brother to Hep C all 4 sons of my grandparents passed due to hemophilia medicine that was produced from factor 8.

If Blood Broker was fascinating to you, you might want to read up where about 10% of blood plasma came from up until just a few years ago. There was a big blood trade at the us-mexico border where pharma companies had facilities so mexican people could cross the border on a visitorrs visa just to donate blood.
