  • Kyle Carpenter is a medically retired United States Marine who received the United States' highest military award for valor, the Medal of Honor, for his actions in Afghanistan on 21 November 2010. On that day, Carpenter threw himself on an enemy grenade in order to save the life of a fellow Marine. Carpenter is the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.

The president of the United States, in the name of the congress, take pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lance Corporal William "Kyle" Carpenter, United States Marine Corps, For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), 1 Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 November 2010. Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base Dakota two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation, and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

To anyone reading this take a moment and pause at the time stamp.
During that pause take a second and let it really soak in what this man is about to say. He is about to tell you he uses his physical body as a shield to cover the blast of a grenade to prevent harm to his fellow Marine. This incredible act of bravery that needs to be appreciated and above all respected. Jus try and put yourself in his shoes. Imagine who you would dive on a grenade for. Family? Wife? Your child? This incredible human being did it for someone of no relation to him other than being one if his brothers in combat.

I don't know if this is the case, but the way Kyle describes things, it seems like the action of getting on top of that grenade to protect his buddy wasn't a conscious decision. Like his training was so ingrained, and his love of his comrades so instilled, that the primal part of the brain just took over for him. That impresses the shit out of me on top of the face value facts.
Respect to the entire process and personnel that went into designing the body armor, as well. A relatively small amount of human pressure is required in CPR to help re-start a heart, yet a fucking grenade detonation failed to stop Kyle's. Unreal.

@EEuphoria seriously been watching joe religiously for over 4 years now and now he's gon all leftist. And keep in mind I'm not all democrats are bad republicans are good I think it's the politicians that are the problem not the people but democrats are definitely alot more stupid than republican people are from my experience

@Chris Martin Id say he was more centrist but leaning towards democrat me and euphoria are just saying he's jumped off to the deep end if Joe biden and antifa are 12 feet deep and ron Paul is like the kitty pool joes like 9 feet deep and that's not good and he sold out not saying it's a bad thing because I would've to but it's not like the guy wasn't already rich.

Not sure if he'd visit Joe's podcast. The fact that Andy and Kyle have a common past or let's say a similar one might have made it easier to get Kyle on the show.

I liked this a lot because I first heard Kyle's story over a year ago on Jocko's podcast, and it was HEAVY. This was a lot more light-hearted. It was nice to hear him in a different time and context. Kyle is low-key funny.

This is no doubt one of the best of the best shows you have had Andy. Leave it to a marine!

I appreciate what you both said at the end about service. I did 7 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. I have struggled with feeling like I didn’t do enough and that because I wasn’t active duty and didn’t deploy to combat that I’m not a ‘real’ Marine. At the end of the day my life situation and plans were far different when I joined but I knew I wanted to serve somehow and I still raised my hand and gave it my best shot.

Thank you for this. It really helped hearing the part of veterans not going to combat. I was stuck in training units deploying and that was my biggest regret and guilt of serving but Kyle’s comment about doing your part helps a a ton. Thank you Andy and and thank you Kyle! Semper Fi brother!!

I like these podcast with conventional Marines/Soldiers. It’s almost a different war. High speed guys infil hit their target and exfil. Conventional guys live in that shit everyday. Going on patrols every couple days and your cop getting hit almost daily. It’s just a different fight. I’m not downing either side. I got love for all my brother. It’s just nice hearing conventional guys.
