  • Mixing the right colour inks takes time and that’s why this is a long one! Lots of hints and tips about colour mixing. I mention Wax Drier made by Cranfield Colour (www.cranfield-...) and inks by Lawrence Art Supplies - olive green and Payne’s grey - (www.lawrence.c.... You’ll see me using my small Albion Press and I’m packing it with sheets of green card to get the printing pressure right. I’m printing onto Fabriano Rosaspina paper. These prints will be/are/were sold on my website at www.lauraboswe...

    I found your approach for the natural use of color very inspiring. You have managed to capture the Japanese mokuhanga essence into a western style of printmaking.

    Your colour mixing advice is SO helpful. Particularly the tips on avoiding waste, as that's where I always go wrong! Thanks for taking the time to make these videos -- I look forward to more.

      HI Della thank you - great to see you find this helpful - I knew it wouldn’t be mainstream popular, but I know colour mixing can be tricky so I wanted to show how I do it 🙂 Thanks

    Thanks Laura! I love mixing my own colours too. I have the oil based inks but still haven’t used them yet. I’m still using the safe wash ones. Thanks for the information about drying in between and how much ink to use, I think I will reduce my ink usage as I use too much.

    I found a place you can get those little plastic palette knives! Unfortunately it only ships to the USA and Canada. You can also get them from Blick in the USA, who will ship internationally, but theirs are significantly more expensive ($2 each) and I never got as far as finding out what the shipping cost was. But someone is making them, and not just to put in the annoying multipacks. The Americans seem to call that shape a "scotty knife", but sadly that didn't get me anywhere at all on UK or European suppliers.
    Great to see your mixing in more detail, and interesting what you said about using a bit of white to make coverage more even. I've had a hellish time with heavily extended background layers sometimes, so I'll have to try that next time.

    I realize how heavy handed I am mixing inks, not the same as painting!

    Hi Laura, that was a fantastic watch which is really helpful too. Can I ask - the first blue test print you did you showed some marks that you were not happy with. Were those marks picked up by the roller on the glass slab? Big thumbs up.

      Hi Paul- the problem was how I’d rolled it out- I’d not worked it enough to get it even. Extended inks need more rolling 🙂 glad the film was helpful!

      @@LauraBoswellPrintmaker Thanks - will watch for that when I do my rolling.

    The rollers you have used for the rainbow roll of the green and khaki and the darker green to follow ... which supplier did you source them from please? I have one of these rollers which I purchased a number of years ago and can't remember where I got it from. Would love to get some more. Also, have you mixed enough ink in this session to do the whole edition of 50?

    • @LauraBoswellPrintmaker
      @LauraBoswellPrintmaker  2 года назад +1

      It was Handprinted and yes - enough ink for all of them 🙂

      @@LauraBoswellPrintmaker Magic, thank you! I should have guessed I'd bought it from Handprinted. I am absolutely amazed that you can do an edition of 50 with the ink you've mixed. I thought I was scanty! I'll have to keep working on it. Thanks again.

    Thanks for the inspiration Laura. If you or anyone else can point me towards where I can get extender for waterbased ink in quantity I would be very grateful. I'm in UK and stuck with only being able to source Schminke 37ml tubes at present which is both pricey and limiting being able to emulate your subtlety. I'm looking forward to the book.

      I think you might be able to get graphic chemical water based extender - it needs a lot of rolling to get it into a good state to print (at least my tins do! )

      @@LauraBoswellPrintmaker Thanks for the recommendation. I wouldn't mind the exercise but no-one seems to have any Graphic Chemical extender or ink in stock here . I hope it ìs temporarily stuck and eventually reappears. Along with the spatulas perhaps?
