    Be careful of what primer you use, the Ospho will probably need to be reapplied to reactivate the layer that is on it now, and then neutralized and rinsed off. Most all epoxy primers will not be compatible with an acid based metal prep unless it’s completely neutralized and removed first. Check with the primer manufacture to see if the Ospho needs to be neautralized/removed, the TDS doesn’t always mention it. Would hate to see prep and primer/paint work ruined by adhesion problems. Upvote this so hopefully Sarah sees it before spraying primer!

    • @h82crash
      @h82crash 2 года назад

      True. You must be sure about compatibility. I have 2K urethane primer from Eastwood and it says it MUST be acid prepped if applied to bare metal. But I etch and remove before the phos dries.

    • @theastronaut2276
      @theastronaut2276 2 года назад

      @@h82crash 2k urethane over bare metal is a bad idea, it doesn’t seal metal like epoxy does and filler does not stick well to 2k so if you need to touch up and bodywork with filler it won’t stick. Eastwood is relabeling lower quality materials, I wouldn’t think trust them on something that matters. Look into SPI products instead, they’re very high quality, priced reasonably, and the costumer service and tech support is the best ever.

    • @maxfolio940
      @maxfolio940 2 года назад +1

      @@theastronaut2276 2k urethane filler primer seems just fine on bare metal, guess it depends on brand. Did most of my car with 2k epoxy on sandblasted metal then body filler and 2k urethane filler tho, just got lazy on last few seperate pieces. I definetly feel like the ospho/rust converter stuff is just asking for trouble and not neccessary, the 2k epoxy will fill, seal and ahdere fine to small rust pores. Kinda like same with sodablasting just way more hassle than sand... But it might have its place on spots that you cant mechanically strip the rust/are too lazy like backside of a steel bumper. I used the eastwood internal frame coating rattlecan on inside of framerails, i guess its okay atleast it had nice extension nozzle on the can but there are better 1k paints too that are more solvent resistant, probably better to stick with ppg etc.

    Couple things - Put the "rust mort" ( (c) SEM) in a spray bottle and mist it all over the panel, and wipe it around with a new rag. You could do the whole car in about 10 minutes! Trust me - done it countless times. And don't use glass cleaner to clean it down, use wax and grease remover. The ammonia (and all the other stuff) in almost all glass cleaners can make for an ugly chemical cocktail between it, the acid, the future paint.

    Like baking soda and very fine sand, to coarse sand. I've also seen video of someone using water to blast the paint off of a truck. Also you are so right about rust, rust never sleeps, especially if there's moisture in the air and on the metal.

    You're rocking it Sarah!!!! Coming from a professional welder and paint repairer, let alone 36 years at G.M., Don't change a thing, only honest advise? Keep that respirator on or close. Cheers from Canada.

    Awesome work, I definitely wouldn't mind having Ragnar in my garage. First car was a 66 Karman Ghia and my father has a 67 bug.

    Phosphoric acid neutalizes oxidation as it detaches the oxygen molecules from the iron in the steel and replaces them with phosphate molecules. The result is iron phosphate. Navel jelly, which looks like the pink slime from Ghostbusters II has saved me a lot of time in removing surface oxidation on my own project. Phosphoric acid is the prime compound in that as well.

    I'm wondering how close to the Desert Mouse livery and body mods are you going to do since you're using the image for your T shirts?
    would love to see this end up with the black 5 spoke Fuchs, the oval rear window, and the scoops behind the quarter windows...and maybe the 2000cc type 4 engine of the original as well

    For future reference, the cement prep at home depot is the same thing you have in the little bottle but you can get a gallon for around 20 bucks, doing the whole car only helps protect it from rust as the phosphorus is similar to a galvanized coating, looks great girl, nice work 👍

    Great job so far, only thing I disagree with (owning a 69 bug myself) is deleting the chrome trim. Doing that robs the car of its character, it looks great when restored and gives the car period correctness. Trust me it will be worth it!!

      this is not a restoration, it's a conversion to a class 11 racer

    Been watching your videos for a while now and must say that you are way better than the instructors I had in Autobody & Paint class. You've been doing outstanding work on every video I've seen. Please do wear that paint respirator. It will save your lungs & sinuses. Plus wear protective clothing. Your skin pores will suck up all that nastiness from paint removal & a respray.

    I remember back in the old days I used to get that chemical stripper and head to the local car wash at night. Slop it onto whatever I wanted to strip, let it work, and easily hose it off with the pressure washer. Couple of extra bucks to clean the stall afterwards.

    I was born in Baja California Mexico, near Tijuana. And in the 70's I remember VW Beatles being decorated to looked like a mouse. They had mickey mouse ears, Wiskers, and the exhaust tail was bent up and curled behind it to look like a mouse tail.

    if you go back to the creme color you should go full Herbie with the racing stripe.. maybe do them in vinyl so they can be taken off by the winner if they wants.

    I was in the Navy for 6 years. Lived, of course, on saltwater in a steel ship. OSPHO was our friend. We would go through 5 gallon buckets like it was water. That was back in the early '90s. Glad to see that it is still around.

    Any time you take an old vehicle back down to metal you are very likely going to find something or other. If it has the old stock clunky intake and carb it would be nice to put dual Kadrons, Webers, somethings on it but the whole package for those including the manifolds, carbs and linkage is notta cheap.
