I have always said this about licence plates! Some people are so paranoid about having their number plates on social media, my plate is very distinctive and people say I should cover them. But who cares, hundreds if people see them every day, while it’s parked. My V70 had a bad battery and the low voltage triggered ABS fault warnings, etc. new battery cured it all.
Voltage under load is the important part, a dud battery can still supply the correct voltage with no load like when only tested using a multimeter, with a multimeter you'd have to read the voltage with load on the battery like when using the starter.
Conductance tester tells you for sure.
Ypu can get a cigarette usb adapter that shows voltage and youll be able to monitor it as well during crank and running or off
I guess those Kansas winters are hard on batteries - Here I am in sub-tropical North Island New Zealand where sub freezing temperatures happen maybe a hand-full of days per year I've had batteries last 10 years fairly regularly - 4 years I'd be feeling a bit ripped off - 6 years would be acceptable.
Funny this video popped up, I valeted a Granturismo about an hour ago and my goodness what a treat it was to drive. Beautiful leather interior, and the engine sounds incredible!
Car Wizard, might consider grabbing a memory saver tool, im sure they have alot of names. A tool that plugs into the cigarette outlet and maintains just enough voltage to maintain the cars settings when changing the battery. Where we go they have one and never have to mess with redoing radio stations etc.
Where can you buy said magical tool?
@@TheNintendo8 I am not a mechanic, but have watched them use it. Did a quick search, Amazon of course, parts stores like Advanced etc seem to carry them as well. or even Walmart. So looks like any retailer dealing with car parts has them. Ranging from around 20 bucks to $100 plus.
Further searching showed that they also range from ones that just go into the outlet to others that also go into the obd port and the outlet. The second type also seems to maintain codes in the computer. As to which type to get, best to find someone who knows whats best as well as first hand which one works best.
@@TheNintendo8 Be careful with these battery savers - do NOT buy the cheap Chinese ones if you value your car's electronics.
Thank you for your help guys I really appreciate it🙏
@@dekkerlundquist5938 Then again, buying a cheap Chinese version of anything is usually a bad idea.
I had a 2005. Did the clutch at main dealer and it came in at £1600. They also updated the gearbox software which improved shifts considerably but I still preferred sport/manual and using the paddles; much more engaging. I found it to be a reliable car and regret selling it. Shopping for another now
Wizard is robbing people blind.
You nailed it. I own 2005 60,000 miles and have the same opinion and experience. It is my modern classic and will never sell. I also have 2011 Granturismo 21000 miles very reliable modern classic that is keeper.
I’m looking for one in the UK too, I’ve read so much it’s doing my head in, any decent advice for a prospective owner?
Get the best example you can. Paying upfront should lessen bills later on. Get a good indy to service it regularly as main dealer is a deal breaker unless they are having a special offer. Don't shy away from the duo-select cars as they are fine if maintained.
@@SuperEjep thanks mate, much appreciated.
My 2016 Golf is still on her original battery but last winter showed it's done its duty. She started every time, down to -25C, but was even less than enthusiastic than usual about it. I have the new battery ready to go. Maybe I'll install it this weekend.
Had a drug dealer buddy who had one of these and he couldn’t for the life of him figure out why it wouldn’t shift right and I told him that you got it always shifted and he hated it and he was like well it’s got an auto mode but it don’t seem to shift right and I said yeah you’re supposed to drive them and use the paddles to shift I said yeah it’s got a auto mode but you’re not supposed to use the auto mode he’s so I would they put it in here if you’re not supposed to use it and I saw why do you think you got it so cheap to begin with this was $100,000 plus car new and you got it for what 10 grand the only thing I really loved about that car was the way it looked and the smell of the interior of that leather real leather smell was unbelievable and it was very comfortable. Needless to say he didn’t have it long but for the time he had it he beat the hell out of it and once I told him that those transmissions go out every 10,000 milesAnd you have to get them replaced if you use them in auto mode so much and it’s probably five to $10,000 to replace every time he quickly got rid of it but he traded it head up for a Chrysler 300 C with the hemi loaded I think he got a good trade on that but whatever.
These clutches are known to go well over 80K miles with the updated shift module and driving them like a full manual.
@@matt33876 yeah he never used full
Manual and always used auto mode and always had issues like it was slipping lol he couldn’t grasp the idea of manual mode
Beautiful car. I love the craftsmanship that goes into these.
Just the nice plonk the door makes when you shut it - puts many modern, so called "premium" brands to shame. Astonishing really, when you consider this is a low volume product, built in Italy.
And lets not even talk about that glorious engine sound and the terrific handling!
Unfortunately, the ways the parts are put together is lackluster to say the least. You can fit a tube of toothpaste in the panel gap along the door.
@@bunsenn5064 Unfortunately you parroting stuff you obviously know nothing about. This is a 2003 Quattroporte (M139), not an entry level 2012 Ghibli (M157).
But keep on watching Dog - so perhaps one fine day you can tell a Camry from an F-series when they stand next to each other...
It looks like a brown bar of soap.
@@alfisti93 I remember when Doug did that video with the Ghibli. Funny but true. The Quattroporte is a completely different car. It’s beauty is something to behold.
The Quattroporte is a lovely car with an incredible soundtrack with the right exhaust. I would get the slightly later model with the ZF transmission, as the Duo select was notorious for going through clutches.
black GTS 👌
Bought mine with 42k miles and a roughly 50% worn clutch. At 72k miles and the clutch is still fine. It's how you drive it, and I drive mine hard, can't resist when it sounds so good.
The Duo Select is the only way to go coming from an owner... this is the way Ferrari intended it when they designed. My mechanic tuned mine to soft faster. You always have to drive them in sport and in manual . The sound track of the 4.2 owns the road. The 4.7 is good but not as good
@@wrapdump I hope you have $5000 to pay for the new clutch................soon !
You sad bitter and jelous human being
To keep all the owners settings, radio stations, etc. Connect a small 12V battery (like a motorcycle battery) to the cables. Then remove the big battery. Once the big one is back in place you just remove the small one.
The term for that effect where the pattern on the center wood trim is mirrored left and right is "bookmatched". You get your veneer panels from the same piece of original wood and mount them so it's like a book that has been opened.
Yeah that seems to be common in a lot of acoustic guitar construction!
Not sure if they still do it but Rolls Royce used to keep a spare set of matched wood to EACH particular car just in case an original one needed replacement, so the new piece wouldn't look out of place.
2000s era Quattroporte are so criminally underrated, i get it for the first gearbox; but the corrected ones after 2006 or so are wonderful cars.
I have two, one fully stock the had Adv1 wheels had been dropped on stock coilovers kreissieg f1 exhaust, Wald Black Bison body kit, and ECU flash. For 15 to 20k is one of the best cars I've bought. Built and assembled by Ferrari. Go c with the Duo Select for maximum effect.

Everytime you mention Maseratis on your channel, I flash back to Joe Walsh's song "LIfe's Been Good"
"My Maserati does one-eighty-five
I lost my license, now I don't drive
I have a limo, ride in the back
I lock the doors in case I'm attacked"
That reminds me of the PSA. Ozzy Osborne did back in the 80's. If you've had too much to drink to drive, do what I do and call your limo driver."
You can change the clutch without having to completely remove gearbox, can move rearwards enough to remove torque tube and change clutch, check out hillengineering in UK for upgraded clutch release bearing too
I don’t think Omega wants to do that, that’s good for a diy job but if the book says to remove unit then they are pretty much going to do that and inspect as much as possible while it’s out.
@@edlingja1 LOL, how many people DIY their Maserati?
Most workshops do what they can to minimise time spent on the job, unless there is something incidental that needs to be inspected.
Wizard is no different.

lol Even in motorcycles, my buddy started freaking out because his ABS light would kick on and off, was stopping fine.. told him probably his battery. Later that day, messaged me again, letting me know his tach would work but his digital speedo would turn on and off and the check engine light turned on, told him he needed a battery, finally took my car, bought a battery, drove to his house, he's outside talking to other riders (some claim to be mechanics) talking about the charging system, the speed sensors, the wiring, the blah blah blah... I told him "pop the seat" , took out his old one, put in his new battery, did the Kawasaki reset, hasn't had a problem since.... and he STILL asks me for help and doesn't listen when I tell him what the problem is lol
Maserati did technically beat Buick on those portholes, but not by a whole lot. Buick introduced Ventiports in 1948 for the 1949 model year, Maserati did their version in 1947 for their first road-legal car, the A6. In the early years, Buick's were actual holes that went all the way into the engine compartment as well. They supposedly did help at least somewhat with cooling, but it was always primarily cosmetic.
True, but the Buick vents were non functional for like the past 50 years, just garish plastic add-ons without purpose. So comparing them with Maserati nowadays seems a bit far fetched.
@@alfisti93 The three port holes on my Dads 54 buick are 68 years old and they are FAKE, just like the News...
I just had an 2000 jeep grand cherokee that has been an nightmare but we decided to replace the battery connectors as they where no good and found over half of the positive ends where corroded where you couldn't see it and had to cut the cable back further when replacing connectors. I've always enjoyed the engine notes from those Maserati Quattropote. They're a good car in my books.
The early transmissions were terrible though
@@Blue-moon12 There aren't many 100% reliable transmission during that year.
@@Blue-moon12 my 2005 has the original clutch with 60,000 miles. I drive it on manual sport mode only. This car is for drivers who know how a manual transmission/clutch works and avoid slipping the clutch. There is no sedan that is so involving and pleasure to drive - engine sound, direct engine transmission connection, best weight distribution rear biased 47% front, 53% rear, very low center of gravity, extremely stiff chassis.
Brilliant car for true petrolheads
They're a nice car to drive and they look and sound great but I'd never want to own one they're a massive headache to own constant problems that's why you can buy them really cheap but they're cheap for a reason.
I agree it is a beautiful car. But the thought of repair costs keeps me away.
The Maserati will cook the alternator if you run a bad battery for too long.
Stunning paint and alloys combo. Love mazzers
I bet Dr. Love was Dr. Angst when that CHECK-ENGINE light came on.
Back around 2006 I got to drive an Italian friend's Quatroporte from Milan Airport to Venice
(3 hours if you drive @ the speed limit of 95mph). He had collected it the previous week, so it only had about 200 miles on it.
Obviously I couldn't red line it, but it was fantastic to drive. Nevertheless we did got there much quicker because I averaged around 120 mph. It would have been quicker, but it was raining heavily and over that speed it would begin to hydroplane.
@that time I had a BMW e39 m5 which was quite comparable. The M5 was a bit quicker and had a manual gearbox, which was a big +, that flappy paddle gearbox was terrible.
BUT everything else was sublime. The handling and sound was fantastic, as was the interior. I would have swapped my M5 for it any day!
I did swap my M5 to Quattroporte in 2005. Although I loved the M5, the Maserati sounds better, is more involving to drive. I change gears very smoothly and manipulate the clutch with the accelerator. It is sculpture on wheels, very under-appreciated in the US, not in the world though. Every trip is an event?
First 95mph then 120mph. You sound like that guy that says he drank 6 beers, then by the end of the conversation he claims he downed a whole 18 rack.

Yes license plates are public and seen by others when driving down the road, but showing it on youtube is like broadcasting it across ten billboards. I've actually had crazy forum-goers have their cop friends look up my license plate from a photo someone posted and they gave out my full name and address, then people started stalking me at home and one even tried to steal my car. Please rethink your stance on this.
Dr love? Is that an Earth girls are easy reference. You know, the 80s movie with Jeff goldblum and Jim Carrey?
I think he needs to blur out the license plates going forward, so he can show the back end of the car without making the license plate visible to at least 1 million people. There are people online who are very knowledgeable in tech related stuff, but only tend to use it in the wrong ways.
bparker06 - please enlighten us - WHAT car was that?
I got 9 years out of a battery in Massachusetts. The Triple A who came out to replace my now-dead battery was shocked it lasted that long.
That was one good battery. Cold winters are really hard on a battery.
My 2007 Saturn still run on the ac delco original battry in Quebec 😅 i guess since it is in the trunk its ages well!
If I am not mistaken, my OEM Chrysler battery lasted for either 8 years or 11 years. I couldn't believe it myself!

Its like what am I doing out of tropical weather...
The whole NFL did not know that air pressure goes down when temps do
What a beautiful spec on this Maserati.
Either this was recorded weeks ago or I'm about to nosedive into some serious weather. I'm on the I-40 corridor in west Texas and it's like 70°F out.
I don't know why transaxle cars are built this way. The Porsche 928 was a transaxle car like this, but the clutch was a one hour job because you could remove the bottom of the bellhousing, and then two bolts from the torque shaft which would allow it to "telescope" back and give you perfect access to the front-mounted clutch. No need to take the whole torque tube and transmission down.
My elantra has the factory 9 year old battery in it. Started it today in -19 degrees no problem at all.
I have also had batteries die in the heat of the summer. I need to replace the battery in my 2016 Canyon. The savior of that battery is the truck is kept in a garage
Lets watch some of the stuff from the amazing Mr and Mrs Wizard 😀
Nice Chrysler transmission Maserati. Still has the top honors on luxury markets depreciation.
nice double digit IQ Solar Flare. You have no shame in embarrassing yourself. The Transmission is Ferrari based, what does that have to do with Chrysler. Also the New Maserati's are using the German ZF-8 transmission which 90% of all BMW's use.
14:08 the orange mount is an interesting shape. Almost looks like its designed to be sacrificial and will be the part that scraps on things instead of the exhaust.
It’s a small wheel
Gotta use a battery maintainer on modern high end cars that sit for weeks...... otherwise they'll eat batteries.
Everybody in the comments talking all nice about Maserati now since Wizard got pissed about the disrespect on that last video talking about leaving that car club over it lol
I should have one. I live in SW Florida. 59 F is cold for us 85f now. Its a Quattroporte, (4) but it only has 3 port holes per side. Buick 225 had 4 Cruise Line Ventiports per side.
Quattroporte= 4 doors
Car seems to be actually decently reliable, it's just some craziness due to coldness. Remember it's an Italian car after all.
Maybe it needs an Italian tuneup?
Thats how it fools you into thinking it get better when warmer... I've been there and done that as my Maserati developed heat soak and vapor lock in hot weather. It would have to crank for nearly 15 seconds to start after parking it hot. Maserati's are never reliable.

@@aussie2uGA What? I've had my Maserati at the race track, on a 95 degree day, racing full throttle for hours and hours and zero issues. Sounds like you had another issue.
That's the reason why I love my 1991 Mitsubishi Sigma. Does not have all this electronics.
Had a battery changed on my VW Golf GTi after it almost left us stranded, didn't have to reset anything the breakdown service I used plugged in a power pack via the OBD port which kept everything in place.
This is smart. You can also feed back the electricity though the battery connected to the 12V socket in your car. (don't use it for high current like starting the engine, but will keep the memory of your ECU, radio and other components)
Just gotta keep in mind you’ll still have 12 volts on the disconnected battery terminals if your back feeding via the OBD port or cigarette lighter
Stupid question, why don't you hook up an auxiliary power cell when changing the battery so you don't have to reset everything?
It's not just exotics. My very non exotic 2011 Hyundai elantra hatch had the airbag system throw codes and turn on the airbag light last time my battery went bad.
This, 2005 Maserati Quattroporte is still on the road, as of today.
I have a Quatroporte Sport GT all black with black interior 148 00 kms full Maserati history and I love it. No leaks, not problems. All these rumors about the F1 box are just nonsense. It is bullet proof and allows the engine to rev to 7500 rpm in a hardbeat. In auto, if the clutch is in decent condition, gear changes are very aceptable, but should be driven as a manual with the paddles.
When Maserati went to the auto box, they had to increase the engine capacity from a 4.2 to a 4.7 litre to get similar 0 to 100 kph time. Autos don't rev that well.
Get a good one and you hooked for life. Sevice history is more important that miles.

You said it all yourself…ALL CARS HAVE PROBLEMS…..the defining factor is how well the car has been cared for. This is in reaction to your all Audis are crap attitude. AUDIS suffer because rich people buy them for their kids and their kids beat the hell out of them. Same is true for Maserati electrical issues, tip of the iceberg. That one is obviously nice but there are others out there that simply aren’t worth fixing because they were ridden hard and put away wet way to often. Hopefully you will back off a bit on the ‘all of this manufacturers (fill in the blank) cars are junk’ and adopt a ‘some of these cars (fill in the blank) are junk’ based on how they are treated. Except maybe for bmw’s of course….😀

My BMW 335i battery went flat after I was away on holiday for 2 weeks , it threw up a steering lock code and I had to have new software downloaded to fix it costing over £100 , the new battery had to be coded to the car costing £35 and £110 for the battery, all that for a flat battery, my wife's Skoda yeti,s battery went bad and threw up heater plug and EGR codes , I cleared the codes and fitted a new battery and all is ok , new cars are shit , I'm selling my BMW and keeping my 26 year old Mercedes Benz C124 E320 with no dumbass computers.
These are fabulous. But there is one fatal engine design flaw. The variators have a high failure rate, a very expensive repair. Likewise, the duoselect transmission is made of glass. The later ZF transmission is mostly bullet proof.
Never buy this vehicle clutch has to be replaced every 25000 or less. Air ride fails. Variable timing fails and noisy. Many other problems this vehicle was a total failure as is the ghibli and the SUV.
