God is NOT "something"! The idea is that WE are the something, our existence. Therefore the argument goes, that since "something" (existence) could not come into being without being acted upon by an outside source, THAT is what leads us to believe in a non-physical, all powerful being, who brought all into existence! That being the case, it is not valid to ask "Where did God come from?" God is that being that MUST exist, since that is the only logical way to explain how WE exist...
@sarukeshel6429 You're contradicting yourself. You have stated that God isn't something; something = existence; and that God exists. If God isn't something then he must be nothing at all.
@dmsalomon no, I am saying that when we talk about the "something", that CAME into existence, ALL THAT IS PHYSICAL, we talk of what caused it. The Creator is removed from that, and so we need not explain "whete" the Creator came from! By logic, if the Creator is outside all that was created, as that being is, we are not lacking in explanation!
Why do you think it is not entirely possible that the universe has existed forever if it has existed forever, what reason is there for supposing there ever was an entity that created it?
At least one reason we can reject the idea that the universe has existed forever, is that we see IN the universe, that everything is the result of a cause! If we follow those "causes" back in "time", we see that all returns to what is called the first cause! There was a moment in time, when ALL began...
What is the answer to the simple question...If you say everything must come from somewhere...or, nothing can come from nothing...where would you say the creator came from?
Time and Space can be measured. Consciousness cannot, eg., you cannot say that an elephant is more alive than a bacterium, tho it's obviously bigger in time and space. Most philosophers from Plato to Neitzche saw Will, Life, Consciousness, whatever, as an absolute that didn't need to have a beginning or an end, it just "was". I think your real question is, granted there is a Force that moves the Universe, but does that Force care whether we eat pork, etc., and did that Force speak to Moshe on the mountaintop? THAT takes some deep study of Judaism compared to other religions, and a willingness to surrender to the truth, no matter what. Good luck!
@@chodeshadar18 Thank you for the response. I have no issue/question about God caring about things/details about life. The extremely detailed nature of the world may just be a reflection/manifestation of God's "caring about details," whatever they may be. My point was just how does one answer/deal with that specific question/challenge of the contradiction between saying everything must come from something/someone...but there is a creator that was always here/came from nothing/no one. You may have addressed that. Not sure.
@@abrahamfinkelstein2058 No one would claim that everything must come from something lol... there is literally no logical reason for that to be true. What must be true is that everything *that has a beggining* must have a creator being as that something cannot create itself. Now being as that the big bang, pretty much, conclusively proves a beginning to the whole of space-time, it follows necessarily there must be a creator who is spaceless and (being as that he created space-time). We call this God.
@@eliper4823 Of course people say that. People say that if there is a creation, it must have a creator. As things don't just create themselves. This may or may not be true but people definitely do say that.
I wouldn't even say, "there was a singularity at a certain point in time." While Newton thought of time and the spatial dimensions as 4 independent dimensions, Einstein's relativity says that time is a property of the spatial universe we perceive. So, there is no such thing as "before the Big Bang": the word "before" acquired meaning only with the creation of the universe.
I always say this example with big bang theory - the best evidence for the necessity for the Source, The Creator to exist. I can't believe people don't get it. One of the atheists I have discussed with even told me: "We have a big bang theory!" How "stupid" this statement is! It clearly shows that the very person who said this, had NO idea what big bang theory says. And even without knowing anything about big bang theory or any other theory, one can be completely sure of one simple thing, that comes form most basic logic, nothing comes from nothing and NO theory will ever say that it does!
The rabbi obviously never read A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking and A Universe From Nothing by Lawrence Krauss who address the question how a universe can come from nothing
Although I am writing 3 years after you commented I felt it was worth pointing out that I believe you misunderstood the Rav's explanation. The foundation of Jewish belief is that Gd created the universe from nothing. That in Hebrew is called "Yesh m'Eyin" Something from nothing. The Rav was not contradicting that. He was saying that Gd is the primal Cause of bringing about something from nothing. Since something doesn't come from nothing without a causation.
Thank you rabbi
Thank you.....such an excellent video....the Truth is so beautifully simple, yet, there are so many who can't understand.
If something could not come from nothing then where did God come from? If he always existed then why not the universe?

Great explanation and to the point.
Great Shiur!

He has always existed.
The universe could not have always existed. read al ghazali, maybe try reading edward fesers book 5 proofs.
The law of cause and effect.
Even a toddler raised in a non observant home knew there is Hashem.

Everything in the Universe can be traced back to one source - God

I write as a believer. However, this is not so much proof as a theory. An atheist or scientist would never accept this explanation.
St. Thomas Aquainis proof of God here. He must have learned it thru Judaic sources.
cogito ergo sum = i am aware therefor i am
I can see you haven't read your Sartre.
The Rabbi's explanation for believing in G-d is satisfying, but how do we know That G-d is personal and not just the reason for existence?
He is both
Through His sefirot, He is personal, but as Ein Sof, He is unknowable
plain Mosaic common sense approach to Judaism
