I don’t remember where I heard it, but the phrase “consumables should not be collectible” has really stuck with me. Things like perfume, makeup, skincare, even food, are not meant to be collected in huge quantities because they have a limited time before they expire. It’s helped me a lot thinking “will I be able to use this up before it expires?” before buying new consumables!
i’d say that collecting in general isn’t great. especially because a lot of people’s collections consist of nothing but plastic that will end up on a landfill once they’re no longer interested in that thing :/ i’m not entirely opposed to collecting, i collect a little bit myself, but idk generally speaking it’s pretty harmful
I own a Home Alone themed Christmas sweater that I wear every year at work and people are happy to see me in it every year, they remember and they enjoy seeing it again. I also lend it to my friend every year because she doesn't want to buy one so we both wear the same sweater to our respective jobs
So I'm a guy, and reasonably I don't feel interested or influenced to buy the products mentioned here, it's more... guitar stuff or handheld consoles or technology (clear non-essentials for me), but the mentality is the same. The reasons to buy/not to buy are the same. Looking for a kind of comfort or nostalgia, or the novelty or cleanliness of something new, or simply wanting that dopamine response by making a purchase. Your videos have helped a ton to look into my wishlist and understand what the thought process behind that "want" is. It brings me peace of mind clearing out some things that realistically have no place in my life. Thanks for sharing :D
Way to go! 🎉😎 I’m a musical person as well so though I don’t play guitar, I know that whole world can be easy to drop hundreds to thousands on buying gadgets and guitars themselves. Don’t get caught up in the hype though. Focus on the playing. 😎
I wear the same dress to every gathering with friends and every somewhat dressy date night. It saves me so much work putting together an outfit when I have such a reliable go-to
I wanted Dyson hair dryer for two years now, and at the beginning of this month, my hair dryer has finally broke, at first, I thought it was a sign, but then I thought myself out and bought a new hairdryer at the 10th of the price of Dyson, today It’s arrived and I love it, it’s an upgrade from my old dryer and I didn’t have to break the bank to get it (sorry for my English EIMSL) I love your channel and I wanted you to know that you made an impact on my spending habit
Congratulations on this win! I love that you weighed out your option and you got an upgrade that was within your budget. I love to hear it, thank you so much for sharing!
@@janelleg597 my new hair dryer is the Babyliss hair dryer with a large diffuser (I have a curly hair) my old one was was braun air styler with a small diffuser attachment, I only used the diffuser in the last year and I don’t think that I need anything else
You know it would be very weird if other people would find issue with us repeating a sweater once a year 😅and yet these odd thoughts still cross my mind
@@EXOmakemeHorololo fr. its kinda weird that people would even notice that stuff. i definitely don’t pay attention to what other people wear and i certainly wouldn’t remember something they wear once a year lol
Regarding wearing the same clothing for the holidays, IF somebody asks about it, you can always pull the "someone special gave this to me and it means a lot to me so I wear it on special occasions". My mom got me a beautiful cozy winter jacket years ago and I only wear it around the holidays so it won't get worn out quickly and because I love my mom and I think of her every time I wear it. Nothing happened to my mom but wearing that jacket is something special to me. Things can be sentimental, I'd rather wear that years old jacket than something new and "trendy" that I'll only get one seasons' wear.
Bullet journaling has been a lifesaver for me - more engaging than a planner and I get to use up stuff I already have (stationary, pens etc.) Plus a blank notebook can be repurposed if you stop journaling where a planner is only good for a set time period
I love this channel because whenever I wanna go back to my old ways I watch a Shawna video and lose the urge. Thank you for these vids, they help more than you know! ❤
Shawna as a makeup junkie your few minutes about makeup literally just made me realize I absolutely don't need any new eyeshadows I love you I much right now 😭
Black Friday should be a day for a financial audit, acting on anything that needs to be done by end of year, and financial budgeting and goal setting for 2025.
I LOVE the sort of "proof of concept" rule for purchasing for new hobbies (where you suggested the pokemon card budget for the month/2 month, etc). I dare say the spending at the beginning and acquiring all the things for the hobby is a huge part of the initial excitement because you are getting pumped up to learn something fun and new. It's so hard to tame that spending initially, so I love that rule to limit purchases for a while to make sure you really like the hobby.
When I have started with knitting I bought one pair of needles and just some stuff, I spent firstly around maybe $70? Just to check if it's something I like. Now I'm $1000 in 😂 I love it
Cost per wear has become super important for me since I’ve become a SAHM. Outside of baby showers, holidays, and things like that, I only wear fancy clothes once a week to church. Now I try to make an effort every week to make sure I’m wearing my favorite items.
I can’t even remember what I wore last Christmas let alone what someone else wore 😂 If someone says “hey you wore that last Christmas” my response will be “thank you for reminding me because I couldn’t remember but don’t care anyway” ❤
This video came out just as I was thinking I might ask my bf if we can go back to Winners to look at dress options for the Christmas party-I’ve been wearing the same dress over and over for Christmas for about 6-7 years now. But instead of doing that, I remembered I purchased a super cute white skirt on clearance and paired with a grey sweater, it gives a super cute winter snowflake vibe that would be perfect for a Christmas party. Thanks Shawna, your videos have really gotten me to think more critically about my purchases!
Also with candles, scents sometimes feel limited edition or special but its just a fancy title for a scent you probably already own. Like it's called "gingerbread cake" and that feels different from "freshly baked cookies" but lowkey theyre both just gingerbread
FOR THE EREADERS - buy! them! used!!!! I cannot stress this enough!! my kindle is a 4th gen paperwhite my sister gave to me. her handmedown as she bought a newer a few years ago. literally best gift ever. it still works JUST FINE today. still connects to the internet, still grabs from the kindle store, syncs just fine! and 4th gen is *quite* old at this point. I've seen the same kindle go for like $40 on ebay in great condition. used used used electronics!! cannot scream this enough!
I LOVE having a signature holiday outfit! I just looked back through my sweater collection while packing for my mom's, and rediscovered sweaters I've had forever, some for 8 years! I don't need anything else--these are my favorite garments, they fit me so well and are my perfect style. Nothing new could ever compare!
My suggestion: Discuss not exchanging gifts with adult family. I’m down to just my twin sister, her husband, and my 2 nieces - mostly because I actually spend the holiday at their house.
This is slightly off-topic, but I have a de-influencing tip for buying new clothes: (ESPECIALLY FOR ADHD BRAINS!!!) To keep your closet fun and fresh, switch everything out seasonally. I don't mean warm weather and cold weather. I'm talking spring, summer, fall/Halloween, and Christmas. At least those are the categories that make the most sense for the clothes that I have and living in Wisconsin. There will be SOME overlap/blending of the seasons, but its generally fun to switch everything out, because half the time I completely forget about some of the pieces I have, and so it gives my ADHD brain a boost of dopamine because it's something new... to my awareness. Furthermore, I'll buy things out of season/from garage sales, and store them away immediately after washing them so that it actually is something new to my closet rotation, and it kind of gives the same vibe as receiving a package when you don't remember what you ordered so it feels like a present!
This! "Shopping your own wardrobe" only works if you're not tired of your clothes by always having everything in your face. I have plenty of kallax storage space and even just putting some clothes into boxes helps a lot with being excited again to wear them later again.
My shopping habit has created debt that I’m trying to pay down. Your videos have been so helpful! The only things I’m buying during Black Friday this year are gifts for my family. Not buying a single thing for myself!!
I have a Notes app on my phone that I keep and add to year-round Black Friday shopping ideas; that includes Christmas and birthday gift ideas for family and friends, baby registry items, or wedding registries coming up. Or just things that I’ve been thinking about and would like in my life such as a certain stainless steel sauce pan, or a backpacking/hunting backpack which I have been wanting for a few years now. It helps keep me focused on what I need to get rather than get sucked in by all the flash sales. Black Friday can be helpful but you have to go in with a budget and a premeditated plan.
The minimal mom talks a lot about managing inventory, and I think about that a lot while shopping. Where am I going to put this? If it's clothing, do I have something similar? Does it fit in my current laundry routine (no ironing, no steaming)? Do I want to dust that off?😂 Also Dana K White talks a lot about the container concept, that's also really useful when I'm out shopping. It stops me from buying more hobby stuff like nail polish, drawing stuff, puzzles, plants, etc. The space that I have is the space that I have. By container, she means anything can be a container to contain stuff. So a bookshelf can be the container, or you windowsill for plants, or a drawer/cabinet or an actual storage container. And everything has to be easily accessible and not too much inventory that you forget you already have it.
I didn’t realize people used Black Friday for anything other than Christmas shopping I won’t lie 😅 I don’t usually need to buy anything for myself when the holidays roll around because I’m already expecting to receive my gifts so this was eye opening! Also your point about perfume samples is SO important! Also, perfumes change scent when you use them correctly and apply them to your skin. Just because it smells good in the bottle doesn’t mean it will mix well with your body’s natural chemistry!
I learned this the hard way; my sister gave me a beautiful perfume that I loved in the bottle, but after ten minutes of wearing it, every single time it would give me a migraine! I ended up giving away the bottle because I just couldn't use it.
I tend to add a lot of stuff to my Amazon wishlist throughout the year so I know I won’t get a lot of it. If something is a good deal on Black Friday, I’ll buy it for myself
When I went through a pretty big body transformation (injury then starting to workout again) I thrifted my clothes. It helped to know that the clothes in my wardrobe weren’t as expensive as buying them first hand (and now I thrift all my clothes bc it’s easier on my wallet 😅)
shawna ur videos have been such a help to me! i have noticed a huge change in temptation and impulse control when shopping, and i always find myself thinking of things u've said in ur vids. tysm for everything u do!!!
I just spent a nausea-inducing amount of money on buying a house, and I haven't sold my old house yet, so, for once, I'm not actually tempted to spend money this Black Friday because I have no money left.
Put on my wax melter for a first time in a month while listening to this. Pro tip: you can remake your tea lights by getting wicks, saving up the used tea light tins and the wax that lost its scent to create more tea lights! Ive not bought any in about five years because of this 😅
I am not even 10 minutes in to this video yet but I am so so grateful for you putting this content into the world, not only you, but the amazing community in the comments sharing their sustainable and de-influencing ideas in the comments. I have two sweaters that belonged to my parents in the 80s that I have worn during the holidays every year. These 40 year old items have outlived almost all of the other sweaters I have bought over the past decade. They are most definitely "out of style" but I cherish them!
I'm proud to say i have a pumpkin spice candle burning in the background eventhough its December. I'm determined to finish it before i start a new one. The new one is actually one i bought last year that i didnt use. Since finding this channel ive been so much better at only buying to replace instead of collecting!
Hi Shawna! I’d love to see you discuss overconsumption when on holiday. I have seen SOOOO many videos about people who go to Japan and buy everything they can and more. I think it’d be very interesting to hear your take on the way we perceive consumption when abroad ☺️
I love your videos. You’ve really helped me with not buying things I don’t need. My buying is from ADHD brain. I would really love to see a video about advent calendars because I saw a lady on here who is spending probably 10 to 20,000 on advent calendar each year just to show them.
So happy you showed up on my youtube feed, we share so many similar thoughts on sustainability and overconsumption and its refreshing to find someone who feels the same
I appreciate your content so much! I find it truly helpful… also your voice is so soothing and good for listening to before bed. It helps me wind down. So another benefit to your videos!
A tip regarding planners: Start by making daily to-do lists. I spent years building up the habit of writing out my tasks for the day, and then the week, on any handy sheet of paper or whatever notebook I was currently using. It’s not aesthetic but it serves the purpose. It was a very helpful coping strategy for my adhd. After a few years of that, I got a planner to keep them all in one place. I’ve been a consistent planner user for two years now and I love it. I just bought a beautiful, new, sustainably made planner for 2025 and I have no regrets.
Pretty much all year for nonessentials that I want, instead of buying I add it to a list and at the end of the year when it’s my birthday/Christmas, if I still want it I tell family those ideas when they ask what I’d like for the holidays. Adding it to the list and saying I’ll ask for it for the holidays gets it off my mind! And sometimes by the end of the year I change my mind and don’t actually really want certain things anymore and I weed out the things I’ve lost interest in.
I’m stealing your holiday signature outfit idea!! I love that both your pieces are tartan print in dark green so they relate to each other but the skirt can be styled differently each year - genius idea!
Thank you so much for de-influencing perfume. I AM extremely scent-driven, but I usually focus on essential oils as part of my hobbies of soap&candle making. I always get SO tempted by perfumes but have YET to not be disappointed because they smell almost NOTHING like the plant fragrances I am used to working with. This was a great reminder of that
Your videos have helped me rethink and reframe so mamy purchases. I have been putting on one of your videos as I start or end my day to get myself in the right mindset and to reinforce the helpful and practical messages you give us in each video. Your work has definitely impacted me for the better! Now that we’re approaching the holiday season, I'm holding onto receipts longer and have returned items when I found a cheaper option elsewhere. I’ve also returned items that I wanted but didn’t need, and I put items back on the shelf after reflecting on why I wanted that item. Once we reach January, I’ll feel a lot better because then there won’t be as big of a consumerism pressure on me. I hate that feeling of "get this as a gift now before it's gone forever" that stores push on us durinf black Friday, cyber Monday, Christmas, New Years, etc. Thank you for all your wonderful videos! Keep doing what you do. 😊❤
The issue with card collecting is it can tap into the feeling of “gambling” because unless you are paying for a specific card, you’re really just buying packs and hoping for the card you’re looking for.
I probably have 30 candles. I’m laying in bed all cozy so don’t want to count right now! I’m one of those people who will burn the same candle till it’s gone. I don’t like to put away a half used candle!
omg shawna im so happy you took the time to help me! i know it was a tall ask but i really appreciate the time and effort you put into answering my request :-) i think the question of when will my collection be good enough is the best one to ask myself, especially as new sets with beautiful cards keep releasing (which is another thing: sets release so often with really gorgeous art and its so so hard to keep myself in check when new sets release), so im going to try and keep that in mind as my biggest preventer of spending on more cards. thanks again!
I don’t know if this will be helpful for others, but instead of planners (my old obsession) I started using a basic legal pad. I tend to move it around my house throughout the day and use it for whatever I need in the moment. Sometimes it’s a diary, sometimes it’s a grocery list, sometimes it’s a meal planner, etc. because it’s not an expensive fancy book, it doesn’t matter if it’s messy or I decide to scrap the page.
I sign up to work black friday every year for this exact reason. Otherwise I’ll be asked to drive my mom and aunts around to go shop and then it gets harder to stick to my goals 🥺
Thinking about not getting a perfume until you smell it. A couple of weeks ago I went (nearly) through every perfume in Ulta until I found two that I actually liked. I probably smelled about 30 perfumes I outright hated.
Yes to reading on your phone! I have the Google books app and can access my books on my phone and my laptop. I don't need another separate device to read. Great advice!
I buy planners that start/ end mid year (June-July) so the additional pressure of the new year doesn’t tempt me to over spend on fantasy new year new you planner stuff that I ultimately don’t use.
I absolutely loved watching this video, especially on Black Friday Eve! So helpful and some great tips for incorporating novelty that we desire without buying things
Fragrances are my weakness. However, since setting a budget, i feel infinitely less tempted. I wear four different scents, and I'm really enjoying using them down.
I bought a perfume “wardrobe” from a brand years ago - 6 roller balls from the brand’s most popular scents. What I learned is I hate roller balls as an application method, and I hate having so many options to choose from but not being familiar enough with them to pick!! I also had a least favourite scent which made me feel bad for not wearing it as I wasn’t getting the value. From then on I’ve bought travel size sprays if I want to have a scent for a season, or a full bottle after using up a sample. Having a couple of scents to pick from at a time is my sweet spot for perfume, and travel sizes are great for adding variety without being overwhelming.
My company has a black tie holiday party every year and I’ve been renting a dress for it for the last few years. It’s been great. Cheaper than buying a new dress each year, plus I get to try designer dresses that I could never afford to actually buy and as a person who loves fashion that is really fun. Highly recommend if you have holiday events and don’t want to wear the same thing all the time.
The great struggle of hobby collection, the other day i was going through the wash and found a huge tear in my favorite comforter. I popped that badboy into a pretty big crochet frame that i hadn't had the chance to use yet and quilted on a patch from a fat quarter that i didn't have a plan for. I GUESS i spent less money on the frame and patch than i would have replacing the blanket, but i suspect that's just because of how long ago i bought the frame.
Thank you for responding to my comment!! This is really helpful- I totally get what you mean about commemorate vs. celebrate. Making a new memory will mean more to me in a few years than buying something, and personally it's more impactful for me if I share it with other people. Something like buying a round for my coworkers at our Christmas party or writing thank you cards... I'll have to think on it :)
Regarding perfume: PLEASE don’t wear strong scents to work. We have a new VP at work who DOUSES herself with patchouli every day. I can always tell when she’s been in the bathroom because it’s full of a fog of patchouli. 🤢
I stopped going shopping on black friday years ago. It just doesn't make any sense to me to wait in line or to get pushed by people for materialistic things that we usually do not need. The "deals" are just not worth it anymore for me. Now , I do 75% of my shopping in thrift stores. I am so used to thrifting that I often think items at Dollarama ($5 and less) are too expensives 😂
I would love to see a video from your view on ideas of sustainable and good gift giving practices. I feel sometimes people dont overconsume just on themselves but this time of the year they are overconsuming on behalf of others and the NEED to give gifts to family.
Investing in one coveted item is helping me avoid further Black Friday shopping. I have wanted the same boots for years but they always sell out before the steeper Black Friday discounts. I have been on an apparel low buy for 5+ years and actually need to replace boots now. I went ahead and bought the boots 20% off knowing they are never marked down further. Now my budgeted money is spent so there’s no point in browsing further.
if you need a halfway point re: fragrance, try buying secondhand. perfume is expensive but people overbuy a lot. that means you can find it often on secondhand markets, even halfway used, at an actual discount. i do this of i'm uncertain i'm gonna enjoy a fragrance and, if i don't, i can trade with a friend who loves perfume as well. anyway, i have five perfumes and this amount lasts like a year for me, so i don't need and won't be buying any until at least a couple of them are empty, so no black friday sephora sale for me
There's a lot of perfume scams out there in the second hand market, that's something people should be aware of before getting into it but it's still a wonderful thing.
Every time I try to tell myself I want a planner, I grab one of my MANY tiny notepads and make to-do lists on them instead. They come in handy when I'm actually busy enough to feel like I need a planner, and I don't feel guilty if I go weeks without using it because the dates aren't predetermined and I can come back to it whenever I want.
Hi ! First time viewer and I love this video. It’s inspired me to really analyze my spending habits and create a meaningful budget. Also I don’t play Pokémon but as a mtg player I suggest looking into online or proxy formats if your interest is playing the game over collecting valuables
I always try and think of my next goal before I purchase something I wasn’t actually planning to. I want to move soon and will need money for that, I also want to decorate my new place in a nice way so maybe that T-shirt I saw today isn’t as important as my more long-term goal.
On the Pokemon cards thing, it really does depend if you just want to keep the cards in a binder or display to look at or if you actually play in Pokemon card tournaments. For example, my child collects them but isn't quite ready to play the game with other people yet, so I just get him the cheapest packs I can find with whatever cards are included. And if you like to just see what you can get that could work great! Same goes for if you are a casual player or just like to trade cards. But if you are a competitive player looking for more specific cards for your deck, it may be worth more of your money to look for specific cards in game stores or online that you want or need. A budget is needed in either a casual or competitive space, but how you budget will definitely depend on which you are.
I have just bought a red velvet 'winter' dress - it is plain enough to dress down and wear for every day - but pretty enough to dress up for a party. I should get 3 or 4 months wear out of it with different looks.
16:48 frankly I feel like people should only buy an ereader if they’re easily distracted while reading, read fast, and travel a lot or want to stay ridiculously minimal in terms of owning stuff
I love the idea of having a specific piece that you know for sure you will be wearing for a Holiday event!! Not having to pick something out is very appealing to me and having a designating pieces for events in advance is something I need to do. I have gone through and gotten rid of most of my dress and skirts because I just don't keep things I don't wear often and now I have a Holiday party this Friday and nothing outside my daily wardrobe to wear
I received an e-reader several years ago, for Christmas, and it’s been great! I would have never bought one for myself but my hubby did well choosing it ❤
Thank you so much! So many helpful self talking points I need to continuously have with myself so I enjoy what I have. What I'm try to do is change what content I'm shown because being inundated by all the newness isn't good for me and my needs vs wants. I'm absolutely enjoying your content... thank you for how thoughtful you are! 💜
Your point about building up a fantasy in your head of what a perfume will smell like is so true!! I bought a fragrance exploration kit from Commodity about a month ago and let me tell you, after smelling them in person, my preferences have completely flipped compared to what I expected based on the description. Something I thought I would like with "the lighter side of ripe red fruits" smells like dad deodorant to me. It's nauseating on the skin 😂. 100% I will never buy a fragrance without doing a wear test first!
The whole present thing is really interesting to me. I love gift giving but it doesn't have to be "stuff." Since the world opened up again, I have started travelling again. I'm a New Zealander. I'm also an Austrian citizen and I love Europe. Austria is my happy place and I had not been there since 2002. Last Christmas I took my kids to Austria for Christmas. I'm a prepaid kind of person so all accommodation, travel and even some experiences are prepaid before I go. I like to know where I am, financially, before I go. My kids are grown up so, once we were off, they were responsible for any extra expenses they made. This Christmas, my daughter and her gf are living overseas and my son, who lives at home with me is autistic and has no idea about buying gifts. I love to be surprised by thoughtful gifts so, in order to make that happen, my daughter has a list of places she knows I like things from and I've given her the money to spend. Next week she is going to facetime her brother and they will talk about what he would like to buy for me, she will buy the gifts, get them sent to him and he needs to find someone to wrap them. I think she's conscious of the fact that her brother is not able to physically do the thing and wants to make sure I'm "catered to."
Also please dont only smell the perfume first, also try it on since the perfume will burn out and smell differently from person to person and while you might like it on the bottle you might dislike it when you wear it.
Honestly I feel it's never bad to get talked out of buying stuff 😂😅 to make you take a second look. Of course it's also important to know when you need to stop overthinking which I tend to do 😕and finally make a decision to purchase. It's a higher art form in this world 😂I try very hard to think for myself and weigh pros and cons but I still clearly get influenced by other people all the time. It's part of human nature and our social needs to listen and take into account other people. We have to be very conscious all the time about what is influencing us....
I feel like with the holiday outfit thing that a repeated outfit can become iconic to You. I have a christmas sweater with skulls wearing santa hats and my santa hat is a plaid. everyone loves them, its my christmas look. my mom for the longest time had a white sparkly santa had and snowflake tshirt. it was her look for years and years until they got too old to wear. the only thing i buy ever year is pjs and thats because i wear them out by wearing them all year
I actually gave myself a specific budget this year for Black Friday and told myself that i won’t buy in the specific category until Black Friday starts.
As a library worker, I implore you to please consider supporting your local public library before purchasing an e-reader! It's free, and it helps support your local community. I work in Wisconsin, and our public library has an app you can put on your phone that allows you to scan the ISBN barcode on the back of any book and it will put that book on hold for you automatically if your library system has it. Many libraries also offer a free program called interlibrary loan, which allows you to borrow books for free outside of your own library system. In the United States, this allows you to look for books all over the entire country and get it delivered to your local library at no cost to you. I know that the trend of e-readers has been growing recently, and if you do decide to purchase one, many public libraries offer book borrowing for digital books so you don't have to pay for a book each time you want to read something new. Please support your local libraries as much as you can! We could really use the help! :)
Hi on replay. I burn candles all year round .I light in the am and put it out in the pm before I go to bed. I enjoy the scents that I buy yes some are seasonal. This is common by a lot of my friends and family. When I grew up my mother and grandmother had candles burning to acknowledge the passing of a family member very lit daily for years. This is very common in many cultures. I believe for me it is part where my love of candles come from. Note also I work from home. In regards to e reader,I have owned over the years I find it cheaper than buying actual books and finding a place for storage of the books.
I admittedly bought a kindle scribe last year (refurbished) and I use the scribe feature every day at work and I have no regrets. But I have used reading apps on my phone for about 10 years and absolutely- that’s the best way to read digitally. No need for a kindle purely for reading.
There's a new documentary out on netflix called Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy! I haven't had time to watch it yet but this long weekend/black friday is the perfect time. I thought of your channel immediately!
So many great ideas as always, Shawna - including the Pokemon cards (my adult kids collect them too). I think the main takeaway from all of the questions is to find new ways to engage with the things you already have. That is challenging when the quick fix is to just buy something which is much easier. But the engagement is far more rewarding!
My only black Friday purchase is a multicooker. I cook all my meals, and it's a variety, so any appliance that will help me in cooking is a plus. I already have a long history of using my blenders, rice cookers, and a multicooker (I want an air fryer + pressure cooker + slow cooker combo) is just what I need to keep cooking up a storm. I'm not going anywhere near a clothing, perfume or makeup store! I don't need the temptation haha
All that and also, if you have the means and only then, live a little. For example, true, advent calendars aren't a good investment - but they're part of a tradition, they're little treats just for you and can bring you closer to your kids. Not everything has to be absolutely useful - again, IF you're not in debts.
I tend to only hit the BF sales for Christmas gifts I know I'm already buying. I go in with a list to check if I can get them any cheaper on BF and if not, then nothing gets bought on black Friday. Most deals aren't as good as they claim. I tend to save things on Amazon and I watch over October the prices creep up and then suddenly the "deal" on black Friday is just what it cost 6 weeks ago
One look at my bank account is all the de influencing I need

I don’t remember where I heard it, but the phrase “consumables should not be collectible” has really stuck with me. Things like perfume, makeup, skincare, even food, are not meant to be collected in huge quantities because they have a limited time before they expire. It’s helped me a lot thinking “will I be able to use this up before it expires?” before buying new consumables!
By that logic, Stanley cups would be a good thing to collect though
This is the reminder I needed! I’m always hoarding skincare and makeup 🤦🏾♀️
i’d say that collecting in general isn’t great. especially because a lot of people’s collections consist of nothing but plastic that will end up on a landfill once they’re no longer interested in that thing :/ i’m not entirely opposed to collecting, i collect a little bit myself, but idk generally speaking it’s pretty harmful
@themagicknightress7132 true, but i think it's mostly meant for people who hoard consumables and not trinkets
@@coolchameleon21 the line between collecting and hoarding is thinner than one might initially think
My grandfather always used to say "A bargain ain't a bargain if you don't need it!!!" 😂 A wise man!!!
I think I'll try this as my new mantra... this is short and on point! 💜
Yes!!!
This is good
I own a Home Alone themed Christmas sweater that I wear every year at work and people are happy to see me in it every year, they remember and they enjoy seeing it again.
I also lend it to my friend every year because she doesn't want to buy one so we both wear the same sweater to our respective jobs
I love that you lent it to your friend and you both get a little festive sweater. This is so fun!!
That’s so fun and wholesome! ❤️
I did the same with my banana Halloween costume when I worked in an office. It just became a running gag and I loved it because it was comfy.
I love the idea of reframing repeating a holiday outfit as creating a tradition!
I have one Christmas sweater. It’s red and pink and have reindeer on the front. It’s actually cute and I enjoy the exactly 2 times I put it on. 😂
“Their only crime is not being new” I love this so much!!!
This phrase will stick with me a long time!
I’m saving for a very specific dress and I keep asking myself “do I want this more than I want that dress” every time I want to impulse buy an item.
I love that you're doing that!!
@nicoletaelor279 this is amazing i will try and keep this in mind when i wanna spend
That's soo clever! I need to do this every time I want to buy something! Thanks so much for writing that comment 💜
You're delaying instant gratification that's so good for the brain 🧠
Edit: typo
Thats a great idea!
Way to go! 🎉😎
I’m a musical person as well so though I don’t play guitar, I know that whole world can be easy to drop hundreds to thousands on buying gadgets and guitars themselves. Don’t get caught up in the hype though. Focus on the playing. 😎
Good on you, man! It's important to think about this kinda stuff.
I wear the same dress to every gathering with friends and every somewhat dressy date night. It saves me so much work putting together an outfit when I have such a reliable go-to
@@morganwentworth2041 that’s kinda iconic tbh, it’s like your cartoon character outfit
You're English is great!❤
Congratulations on this win! I love that you weighed out your option and you got an upgrade that was within your budget. I love to hear it, thank you so much for sharing!
What brand? Please tell
Your English was easy to understand. I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t your first language. 👍🏻😊
@@janelleg597 my new hair dryer is the Babyliss hair dryer with a large diffuser (I have a curly hair) my old one was was braun air styler with a small diffuser attachment, I only used the diffuser in the last year and I don’t think that I need anything else
You know it would be very weird if other people would find issue with us repeating a sweater once a year 😅and yet these odd thoughts still cross my mind
you're not the only one!!
@@JessicaMelgar3 “I know. 😊 I love it!” would be another great response
You don't gotta talk us out of it, them sales are already off putting as is 😭😭 these companies really think 3 dollars off is gonna cut it 💀
Bullet journaling has been a lifesaver for me - more engaging than a planner and I get to use up stuff I already have (stationary, pens etc.) Plus a blank notebook can be repurposed if you stop journaling where a planner is only good for a set time period
I love this channel because whenever I wanna go back to my old ways I watch a Shawna video and lose the urge. Thank you for these vids, they help more than you know! ❤
this is the biggest compliment!! I'm so glad to be able to support you on your journey
Oh that's some good perspective
Thanks Shawna, your videos have really gotten me to think more critically about my purchases!
your outfit sounds so pretty!! The creative thinking here and leaning in to what you already have is so great to hear, thank you for sharing!
@shugarysubstances older ereaders are so sturdy too! I had my original kobo touch for about 10 years before it finally stopped working
It also wasn’t until I saw an ad of a $165 boot be discounted to $120. I couldn’t help but laugh 😂
This is slightly off-topic, but I have a de-influencing tip for buying new clothes: (ESPECIALLY FOR ADHD BRAINS!!!)
To keep your closet fun and fresh, switch everything out seasonally.
I don’t need anything. I’ve lived so long spending money on things I want and then having regret for the purchase a week later.
Do I want to dust that off?😂
Also Dana K White talks a lot about the container concept, that's also really useful when I'm out shopping.
That's ok because you can just spray on clothes without affecting the skin chemistry, works well for me
I learned this the hard way; my sister gave me a beautiful perfume that I loved in the bottle, but after ten minutes of wearing it, every single time it would give me a migraine!
I'm so happy to hear that my videos have been helpful for you 💕
I just spent a nausea-inducing amount of money on buying a house, and I haven't sold my old house yet, so, for once, I'm not actually tempted to spend money this Black Friday because I have no money left.
Put on my wax melter for a first time in a month while listening to this. Pro tip: you can remake your tea lights by getting wicks, saving up the used tea light tins and the wax that lost its scent to create more tea lights! Ive not bought any in about five years because of this 😅
Great idea!
Calling future me out 🙈
I love your videos. You’ve really helped me with not buying things I don’t need. My buying is from ADHD brain. I would really love to see a video about advent calendars because I saw a lady on here who is spending probably 10 to 20,000 on advent calendar each year just to show them.
Is it Lauren Mae beauty?
I adore your channel and your voice is very soothing, thank you for this content!
This was a great reminder of that
Bloodhound in your past life
Your videos have helped me rethink and reframe so mamy purchases.
Such a calm voice..
I probably have 30 candles. I’m laying in bed all cozy so don’t want to count right now! I’m one of those people who will burn the same candle till it’s gone. I don’t like to put away a half used candle!
Thank you so much for doing this! I need to be down to earth and it's so difficult:(
You're wonderful, sending you tons of love!!❤❤❤
wishing you the best during this sale season, you got this!!
omg shawna im so happy you took the time to help me! i know it was a tall ask but i really appreciate the time and effort you put into answering my request :-) i think the question of when will my collection be good enough is the best one to ask myself, especially as new sets with beautiful cards keep releasing (which is another thing: sets release so often with really gorgeous art and its so so hard to keep myself in check when new sets release), so im going to try and keep that in mind as my biggest preventer of spending on more cards. thanks again!
I really wanted to do you justice so I'm glad it helped even it was a little!
The tip of looking at my (any item) compared to what I'm thinking of buying has been my #1 buy less technique!
Bless you Shawna!! Thanks for the philantropic help! I'm so tired of commercial strategies, including Black Friday.
They come in handy when I'm actually busy enough to feel like I need a planner, and I don't feel guilty if I go weeks without using it because the dates aren't predetermined and I can come back to it whenever I want.
this seems like a great alternative !
Pokemon cards are fantastic for reading, math, memory and so many other skills.
I have just bought a red velvet 'winter' dress - it is plain enough to dress down and wear for every day - but pretty enough to dress up for a party. I should get 3 or 4 months wear out of it with different looks.
This channel has saved me so much money, no joke. 😂❤
Saturday at 9:12pm, watching this video and cleaning out my closet for donation because I have too much and Shawna is the inspiration.
I've been burning the same candle around holiday time for four years now 😆 that's how little I use it. I will not be replacing it 😂.
I have a christmas sweater with skulls wearing santa hats and my santa hat is a plaid. everyone loves them, its my christmas look. my mom for the longest time had a white sparkly santa had and snowflake tshirt. it was her look for years and years until they got too old to wear. the only thing i buy ever year is pjs and thats because i wear them out by wearing them all year
Works for halloween too! I immediately began singing“ This is Halloween, Halloween, Halloween…” when I read this
@@jessfrisk3585 yes exactly!!
Your poor plant is stuck in the door. I hope it’s ok.
I didn’t even realize 😭
So glad to hear you use your candles and have built a ritual or habit around something you love
I admittedly bought a kindle scribe last year (refurbished) and I use the scribe feature every day at work and I have no regrets. But I have used reading apps on my phone for about 10 years and absolutely- that’s the best way to read digitally. No need for a kindle purely for reading.
The nose connoisseurs' come in clutch for not wanting to pay Tom Ford prices.
The first segment of this video was all I needed 😭
Whenever I look at a piece of clothing or maybe a body spray of something I think “would I wear or use this or does it just look pretty?”
