this is a really good way of putting it, ive worked at walmart and target, target has way more people browsing to browse and groups here or talking for half my shift.
This is so true. They have everything there, and both their setup and their products are much more aesthetically pleasing than any other stores that sell similar things in the same price range
Even the shopping carts are nicer in Target. It may seems like a small thing, but their cleanliness and smoothness when pushing makes the shopping experience so much better.
now that you've said that, I don't think I've ever gotten a Target cart that sucks! Meanwhile Kroger and Walmart....it's more rare to get a cart that works perfectly.
This is the thing that drove me crazy at the start of the pandemic. The people whining about how they couldn't do their daily things like Starbucks runs and going to Target in particular. I kept thinking that if the only thing you have to look forward to daily is going to Target, then there is a huge commercialism problem in America that needs to be addressed.
@@blabarsris6012I guess the Swedish equivalent would be going to IKEA on the weekends (or at least it was so about a decade ago when I was a student in Linköping)
My local Target is pleasant to shop at because it's clean and organized and feels roomy. It is also restocked pretty frequently. I visited a friend in another state and she took me to her closest Target and I was so turned off. There were items left on the floor, empty shelves, poor lighting and out of date fixtures. The people in my town regard Target as a step up from our Walmart (which has also improved over the years) so the customers and patrons mostly help take care of it so we can keep having nice things.
When my friend and I used to do "Girl's night" we would go to Target. We would go for two reasons 1.) No fee to get in. 2.) It stayed open late. It's a hall of consumerism but we were using it as essentially a third place. I have a major feeling that a large reason for over consumption is the lack of third places in America.
When I lived 10 minutes from target and 10 minutes from Walmart, I used to go to Target because it wasn’t as crowded and people were usually better behaved. But that was for leisure shopping or to only get a few items. If I had an actual grocery haul to do, I made myself go to Walmart because I knew I’d save money. Now I live rurally and go to Walmart almost daily. People here are less crazy, and the closest target is an hour away
@@daphblue same here, Target 45 mins away and I don’t love it that much. Walmart and Burkes are 13 mins away so I stroll around there and kill time when I need a shopping trip to destress. I just like to look and window shop.
One of the main things I prefer about Target is the ease of accessing products. Our Walmart in town now has a lot of things, especially in health and beauty, behind locked plexiglass. I needed some saline solution a month ago and stood in Walmart pressing the "please help" button for someone to come unlock the case for 15 minutes straight, and nobody came, so I left. Went to Target and was able to get in and out in less than 5 minutes because their saline was not locked up.
Hey Michigan subscriber here 👋🏾. I used to be "obsessed" with Target during the Mossimo, Mossimo Supply, Merona Era. I still have a Mossimo 100% leather Jacket from 2007. Target clothing was affordable whether it was regular price or clearance. Not anymore, Target clothing is too expensive even on clearance most of the time. Since about 2014, Walmart clothing basics, knit wear (Time and Tru, No Boundaries) and some trendy items have been priced so great in my opinion. I love the Free Assembly line at Walmart and scored high rise wide leg jeans for $5! I've bought faux leather jeggings, knit skirt set, knit and cotton dresses, Men's corduroy shacket, flowy summer pants and tank tops. I'm sticking to Walmart because the clothing I find there on clearance can't be beat and for my lifestyle I can find the staples and basics I need at Walmart.
I agree about being able to find great staple clothes at Walmart. I love corduroy, and I got a beautiful corduroy navy dress there that is my favorite silhouette WITH pockets that has become my favorite dress, and I found a brown pair of nice thick wide wale men’s corduroy pants that fit me perfectly as oversized baggy pants that were marked down to a dollar! I also have found a lot of great bras there which is really surprising because I have a rough time finding bras that fit me. I gave up trying to order them online, I have to be able to actually try them on and feel the fabric and Walmart has come in clutch for that!
@@ashleighstake2 oh man, I miss the Merona/Mossimo years at Target! I actually still have some Mossimo t shirts and they are shockingly better quality than anything you can get now there.
this was interesting! i think the coffee shop does add to the more “cozy” associations with target, and i’ve always felt like target was more comfortable. walmart feels more “cold” and like a warehouse because of some of the things you noted, the lighting, floors, shelves, etc. i used to also feel like target was more comfortable because it was less crowded, but lately every time i go to my local target, it’s just as crowded and overstimulating as walmart! i’m one of those ppl who just wants to get my stuff and get out in either store, so the ppl leisurely walking around with coffee in target sometimes annoy me 😂
I agree Walmart does feel cold, and warehouse like the fluorescent lights are awful too, target depending on location feels more put together and cozier
This is kind of unrelated but the “people of Walmart” page always made me feel icky even as a child. I don’t agree with taking photos of random people in public, you don’t know what’s going on with them mentally, and these people are just existing and then they get posted online solely to be made fun of…
I go to Aldi for most of groceries and go to Target for specialty things that I can't get at Aldi. I live right by a Walmart, but it's such a mess and anciety-inducing experience. The most I do at Walmart is a pick-up order
@TheClairelikescats agreed. Also, if I bought everything that I buy at aldis at Walmart instead, I'd likely pay close to double. I, too, only buy what I can't get at aldis at walmart.
Ive heard that some places it isnt as drastic of a difference. But for my location, I buy ALL of my produce there, thats all at least half price walmart is charging. Snacks, cheeses, some meats (mainly sausages, sometimes beef and turkey) occasionally premade meals are all significantly less expensive. @MichelleHenleyJohnson
Before YT, IG, and TT hauls, I loved Target. I would get up early on Sunday morning, treat myself to a Starbucks, and hit up Target. Back in the day Massimo and Issac Mizarahi clothing line was amazing. The quality was good, and to this day, I still have certain pieces from the early 2000s. I don't frequent Target as much as I used to. From toothpaste and laundry detergent being locked up and wanna be influencers shooting content in the store, my nerves are wreaked. Its no longer relaxing to me.
I’d love to see a similar unpacking of Costco! Especially since Costco on the surface seems to be marketed towards those with less financial means, but it requires a buy in in the form of the annual membership and requires you to buy in bulk. There are also many Costco’s located in upper middle and upper class areas, and I know many upper income people who are eager to make use of their costco memberships to make sure they’re getting the best pricing. It seems Costco targets the price sensitive sector of the upper middle and upper class where Target targets (no pun intended) those who are price agnostic. Great video, Shawna!
Ngl I think Costco is a bit overrated and sometimes you actually pay more for stuff there compared to shopping on Amazon (this doesn't happen a lot though). A recent example was I was looking at a Samsung tablet and the Costco version was about $20 more expensive then getting it off of Amazon Also the fact they have so many caveats on their membership compared to other stores. I.e. you can't just show up with someone with a card and pay for your own groceries, it also has to be a credit card owned by the person with the membership. Other warehouse clubs do that experience much better, like Sam's Club you don't even need to stand in line at checkout if you have the app. You can scan products as you pick them up and then pay via phone then walk out
I have never considered Costco as the store for the price conscious or those of lower means. The main thing of Costco is the return policy, the ability to buy in bulk, and of course the hot dogs.
Another thing about Wal-Mart and older people: many of them are on a fixed income thanks to Social Security, and so many not having much saved for retirement (if any at all). As Wal-Mart has lower prices, their dollar can go farther. Also Wal-Mart Pharmacy has (or had) a list of $5 and $3 medications, ones that are commonly used by older people especially and those with lower incomes. I’m not sure that Target’s CVS has an equivalent.
I agree with what you said about browsing. I have both Target and Walmart in my neighborhood. I hardly ever to to Walmart, when I go there is to pick up a few essentials and run out. But I do visit Target often, specially to browse, find a few aesthetic items, enjoy a coffee and have an experience. To me the atmosphere of Target makes me want to hangout in there and their aesthetic make me want to shop for items other than just every day essentials.
I go to a store, Meijer, that is a box store and basically a hybrid of Target/Walmart. Target is too “aesthetic” to me and the one by my boyfriend’s house is so messy and busy always. I love my Meijer!!
When I was highschool (around 5-7 years ago) my sister and I would go to target for fun and just walk around the store. Sometimes we got Starbucks, but we mostly didn’t buy anything when we were there since I was a child with no money haha. We just enjoyed walking around looking at all the fun things they had and never went to the food section because target was more expensive than walmart or other grocery stores we went to for food. Now that I am in Canada I miss target sometimes just because I miss the environment and walking around for fun and not buying anything. Its honestly fundamentally changed the way I shop since I dont feel the need to buy something in every store I go into now. Walmarts are so crowded and unpleasant to be in so you just want to get out as soon as possible. I feel like target with the Starbucks (and the fancy pizza hut in mine) made it more like a mini mall than a grocery store like walmart. So interesting to think about and I love your videos btw!
As a European with zero target experience, the footage of the clothing looked like the Primarks I've been to and that isn't a premium feel at all. So very interesting. I also tend to feel very wide aisles aren't pleasant and feel more industrial/sterile and less personal, like a home depot.
It's middle class fancy but still cheap, disposable fast fashion style clothing overall. I frankly do not think people in the US know what high quality is anymore. (I am from the US) In other words, it has the veneer of being less tacky than Walmart but ultimately is in the same overall class of store.
The aisles at Target are not as wide as your envisioning them. You might be thinking of a warehouse like Costco where it is very industrial and uninviting. The wider aisles at Target are enjoyable because two cards can comfortably fit down them at the same time or cross paths with each other and at other stores that's not really possible so you feel so cramped.
I do feel a lot more anxious in Walmart versus Target, unless it's the holiday season and the Target is crowded too. Something about Walmart makes me feel very uncomfortable while I'm in there
definitely more so than the generational divide in demographics, i feel the class divide!! in addition to being a conscious consumer, i live below the poverty level, so there’s really no reason for me to be inside a target tbh. 😭 also i live in a smaller city and our target is SMALL, so i think it’s always felt more like a “specialty” store to me anyway. our store doesn’t have a starbucks, the beauty section feels exactly the same as walmart’s, the grocery section is almost nonexistent, and they removed the previously-huge media section in order to add more aisles for kitchenware. it just doesn’t hold the same appeal it did when i was a child/teenager.
I go to all sorts of stores and can typically find useful clearance items. I hate spending a lot of money on things (even if I need it) and go to target sometimes. You just have to know prices. I actually don't really like Walmart anymore, it become expensive.
Growing up, my city had three choices to to more major grocery shopping - Winn-Dixie, Walmart, and Publix. My mom favored Publix above the others specifically because the higher prices "meant better quality" and "Walmart is for poor people", so I generally didn't go to Walmart outside of select outings with friends. We got a Target near the time I was graduating, but because it was on the other side of town, my mom wouldn't bother to go because it was too far. I think a lot of the time, perception of Walmart fell a bit in line with why she looked down on it - somehow, lower prices was considered something you would only worry about if finances were tight, it was worse quality, etc. I didn't get to shop at Walmart especially often, but my clothes always lasted years and my supplies were always good enough for my purposes. I got into crocheting and could spend $2-3 on skeins of yarn, my bike lasted years before Florida weather claimed it for rust, so on and so forth. Unfortunately, I met a lot of people who treated Walmart as something to look down on, even if Target was very similar in substance. But the difference in visuals alone seems to have done a number on people's preferences of the stores, because that curated appearance in Target seems in line with the same mentality for why people liked Publix in my area.
As someone living in the U.S, I think I used to like Target more because of this exact hype. I honestly prefer Walmart now, though, because of their prices, the groceries selection, and their stuff has gotten so much cuter/nicer/trendier lately. Target's items just seem overpriced to me. Why is a shirt 28$?
Walmart is kind of too chaotic in my opinion. There’s always screaming children, gross stuff smeared on some stuff you might try to grab, immature/uncultured people farting or burping really loud in the middle of an isle. The fitting rooms are always closed or non-existent, no full-length mirrors to even see how a jacket or a hoodie might look on you, clothes are often super disorganized. If it’s pajama set, the top will be hanging with jeans and the bottom will be in the toy section somewhere. Eventually you just give up looking for them and leave. I sometimes get harassed at the door by their staff because I don’t have a receipt, since I bought literally nothing. I didn’t find what I originally went in for. So now, they are looking at my small purse with suspicion trying to assess in their mind if I could have shoplifted a 36”flat-screen tv from their electronics section and shoved it into a 8” x 4” cross-body bag. Or if I look like I could have hidden their entire rotisserie chicken up in my anus. The store is a zoo! I go in only if I feel that there is no other choice.
with the receipt checking, it might depend on the stores you go to, but yes, generally walmart stores are chaotic. i've worked in one. the atmosphere is much calmer in target.
I used to love Walmart before the pandemic: reliable, you can find everything, it was fairly priced, convenient, and used to be more organized. Now, visiting one is an overwhelming experience: a lot of aisles empty or messed up, mispriced items, and no one assists you. The lack of customer service in most of the staff makes it pretty unappealing to be there.
On the replay ,Walmart does not need to use marketing dollars ,because more people spend money at Walmart, their bottom line is the only thing they think about. They make deals with suppliers where they get units of products at such a low price that their margin is higher than Targets. I have bought many of their house brands of clothing over the years, kids clothes baby needs men's and women's clothes and I felt like they lasted just a long as other brands but for a much lower cost. The brand George is great. Also I like a 1 stop shop experience,I get my groceries ,clothes gaming, houseware etc all at once. I believe that location of store for people also has an affect of where they shop. If a Target is closer people will shop there ,if a Walmart is closer they will shop there.
14:52 walmarts used to have carpets in the clothing sections. and to be honest, I'm old enough to remember when walmart and target had much more similar feels. walmart has now strayed into an industrial feel ("welcome to walmart, get your shit and get out") and target has stayed on brand and not strayed from the more "department store" esq feel.
I tend to go in and get what I need and leave both stores but when I leave Walmart I am in a pissed off mood which does not happen when I go to Target. The thing is with Target I can’t ever find clothes that I can wear. They have limited supply of plus size clothes and no petite lengths in my size. I do like to buy my cleaning products at Target because I can find particular items I want that Walmart does not carry.
I've been watching for a long time but have never commented. This is your best video ever! I'm loving all the facts you're sharing. Looking forward to seeing your channel grow
I wonder if Target, in a way, has taken on a role of a third space in place of traditional malls, which are (in my opinion, unfortunately) declining in a way for people to get together and shop in a casual, multi-departmental setting, especially if the Target is close to other shops of similar nature. Thus an increase in its appeal and popular in more recent years. I guess I never noticed Target as its own entity growing up because my hometown Target was actually a part of the large mall in town.
One thing that was interesting to me when I moved to LA a year ago from a small town was the lack of Walmarts here! It's one of the biggest US cities and you can find almost everything here, but there are only like 2 Walmarts here- both an hour away because of LA traffic. However, there are so many Targets throughout the city, with the closest two being each about 10-15 mins away.
I love your channel, I am a middle class RN BSN, and never in a million years would I spend how I see other people spend and consume. it's absolutely insane
Texan here! We view Target as a more bougie experience. It’s less crowded and has a more diverse selection of products that you can’t get at Walmart. But you can get the same things from Walmart if you want them. I’m not endeared to either. It just depends on what I need. Skincare, hair care, makeup and body care? Target. Everything else, clothes included? Walmart. I like ordering online and picking up so I don’t overspend at both. As well as it’s easier for me since I’m disabled and walking any store is pretty painful.
I might have another theory as to why Walmart's demographic is older: my grandmother gets a rewards card from her insurance (Medicaid/ medicare) that she can use ONLY at Walmart. She complains often that she would like to shop at other "nicer" stores with fresher produce but with her limited mobility & even more limited income it's just more convenient to get everything at Walmart. I've tried getting her to try ordering groceries on her phone for delivery but she likes the experience of going out & physically picking out her own groceries (especially produce)
For me, Walmart is just a store where I go to buy essentials. When I'm in the store, I'm there to get in and get out. On the other hand, when I go into Target, I never really buy anything there; I just go to look around and scan the aisles, which is something I don't do with Walmart. Ever since I was younger, going to Target was an event because I saw the store as this really fancy kind of bougie place.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Target was considered a glorified Kmart; in other words, it was not very cool. Kids didn’t really want the clothes from there very badly. This was what I remembered around the mid 90s in Washington state; it just wasn’t desirable to shop at during that time. It was just ok. Now a little “Target run” will leave ya broke.
@@laurasutcliffe723 Yes also from WA and Target didn't have this bougie reputation when I was a kid, it's so interesting to see it now because it just seemed like a discount store to me.
Its easy to assume Target would be a top 3 or top 5 retailer! I think a lot of that has to do with Target's demographics, particularly in comparison to Walmart. Target is much more popular with young people, and young people are far more likely to be posting Tik Toks & posting content in general. I have seen Walmart influencers, but they tend to be older, with children etc. Different vibe & different exposure.
I don't actually live near a Target and did not growing up. I lived near one for a spell and still didn't use it much. I have gone to a Target probably less than a dozen times in my life. I would have to go out of my way at cost to myself to go to a Target. Target has no draw for me and no nostalgia or anything so I really don't get the online infatuation. It's a more expensive Walmart.
I shop primarily at Aldi (groceries) and Target (everything else) in Michigan. There’s very little difference in cost between Target and Walmart health/beauty, cleaning products, etc. now, and Aldi groceries are the cheapest of all. We also have Meijer, which is even more expensive than Target now. I find the small cost difference between Target and Walmart justifiable for me because I often get treated poorly by Walmart employees and shoppers for being queer. Target has always felt safer.
So I'm late to this, but I can't help but notice that none of the top comments mention how badly Walmart treats & pays its employees. We will never shop at Walmart simply because of how badly they pay & treat people. (This is based both on national statistics and on anecdotal experiences of friends who have worked for both.)
Nice video. As an average American growing up in Texas my family only ever shopped at Walmart for the low prices. We only went to target because of their “gift registry”. Because of that now as an adult I view target as “premium”. Not sure if anyone else relates.
Target has solid basics, some prices are actually cheaper than Walmart and it’s easier to do returns. Honestly I shop for groceries in a loop- Grocery Outlet, Winco, Walmart, the local Co-op, then if there’s something else on sale in the food section at target I’ll get it. I get all my workout clothes on clearance at target- so I do go there often and look around after work. I haven’t bought clothes at Walmart since they collaborated with Miley Cyrus when I was in middle school. I think Walmarts low prices- online store, app, and grocery pickup/being literally everywhere is why they are so popular. I’ve never seen one with a McDonald though- it’s usually subway, and I never see people eating there because Walmarts hot deli food is so cheap. Basically: I shop wherever the deals are best- I don’t care about much else anymore. I try to shop at Winco over Walmart because it’s employee owned, but they have way less locations. I can only shop the way I do (deal hunting/comparing) because I have a non traditional job where I’m constantly on the road during the day and can stop into a shop for 20 minutes randomly.
For the past year or so I’ve been more aware of my own waste, reduced plastic use a lot and overall purchased less items. Your videos have also opened my eyes to even smaller stuff, like not giving in to fall trends. I did a no buy September that has extended to October and I’ve been generally successful! I feel like a better human overall. Also has opened me up to seeing the crude amount of cheap shit that’s all over everything all the time lol
I will go to Target instead of Walmart if I have to find something at a big chain box store that I can't find local or at the co-op I work at but mainly because Walmart has kind of sided politically with the right wing and target has at least in certain avenues taken a more left-leaning stance on things. That said I'm in getting the one item I can't find any place else and then I'm out the door. It's also worth noting that my mom does a lot of price shopping for anything and everything we need and Walmart stopped being the cheapest place for most things several years ago. It basically is hit or miss whether Target or Walmart is cheaper at least in our area. And a lot of times the sales at the grocery store even in the pharmacy aisle is genuinely cheaper than going to any of the big box stores.
I actually work at a Target, and honestly it’s a pretty decent place to work. They make sure we get our breaks with HR even emphasizing it, starting pay is $15 an hour (with bonus pay per hour during holiday season), and my location doesn’t play music over the speakers- which some people don’t like but as someone who spends eight hour stretches there and doesn’t like most popular music I love. That said kids treat it like a playground and it turns into a full ass circus on the weekends.
I'm not a Walmart or Target loyalist, but I also just don't agree with supporting any big corporation. At the end of the day, these businesses don't care about you. They just want your money.
Shawna! Girl I have been absolutely loving your vids. I love the nuance you’re bringing to the conversation and your calm and intelligent manner. Also you’re beautiful 🥰
This probably sounds crazy but if I stay inside of a Walmart too long, I get dizzy and eventually nauseated. I can’t explain it but if I go to Walmart, I get what I need and get out. At Target, I casually stroll and spend way more money.
I recently realized that Walmart and Target prices aren’t too far off. I always thought that Target was for more boujie people and expensive. I’d honestly shop at Target more than Walmart if it were closer. My closest Target is 30 minutes away vs Walmart being 15. I do rush in and out of Walmart when I’m there because it’s always busy and the one near me just changed every self checkout to 15 items or less. I had over 15 items and had to wait in line over 20 minutes to check out with a person because there were only 4 lanes open (which is nothing new but now with eliminating self checkout I’ll no longer be shipping in store unless there are only 1 or 2 things I can’t find elsewhere). Had I known that I wouldn’t have went there to begin with. Target is cleaner AND I can walk in and smell coffee which absolutely gives me a comfy feeling. I was shocked that Target ranked so low on the list too.
As a Gen-Xer that grew up in the South: Id have to say in a way its a bit more complicated. Walmarts are the ones that moved out to the small cities and towns, underpriced everything to run off the local shops then priced high and away once they were the last ones standing. Add that to the way the beginnings of social media spread word about the Evils of the Waltons, and then there was Target. More expensive, yes but... Cleaner. The item selection, in food to begin with, is actually fairly shocking. Target might have 1/3 or less of grocery shelf space, but it has a decent variety and things that tilt towards healthy. Walmart has an entire aisle of Little Debbie snacks, bread, and candy. Soda galore, it might be cheaper but its also very low nutritional value. Then the Starbucks moved in, and the clothes got cuter, and the seasonal stuff was really nice. Its build on that for the 20 years Ive been buying for my own household to end up being - you want something nice, you want a treat, you want healthier options and can afford it? Always target. If you need more variety, or speciality diets, still not Walmart - until I needed Diabetic supplies. And oh goodnes gracious, was that Walmart. And all that sugar free stuff at my local Walmart? At the end of the aisle with the Candy and Little Debbies cakes....
Michigan lady here! Meijer is my first choice in general. Meijer is mostly in the midwest and can be larger than Walmart and is always cleaner, more stocked, and tidier than Walmart. And, depending on the location, Target can also be a hot mess. I think I consider the amount of options and quality before pricing. Experience also. I definitely have a couple "favorite" Target locations and a few I refuse to go into. I like to get groceries at Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, a local market chain (Westborn), and Meijer. If I need decor or clothing, I go to Target and Meijer. The prices at Walmart are more affordable, however, you get what you pay for. Any clothing I have ever bought from Walmart falls apart in at least 6 months, while clothes I've bought from Target and Meijer (not counting any fast fashion or "trendy" pieces - I don't buy those) have lasted me years. But you've also got to be careful with how much decor you buy from Target at once or else your place will scream "Target staging" instead of your unique style. Target has a definite "esque" if you will with their decor even though it is extremely cute. If there were more Super Targets around, I think they might be more popular than Walmart. When I was a kid, I grew up in a city in NC where Walmart was the only department store option. It was THE place to be and it was terrible lol
The first step of getting away from Amazon and the conglomerate of Walmart for in person stores was literally Target for me. They also didn't charge for drive up fees and it stopped me from overspending I really do like their stars in above and loungewear brands. Do I go too far sometimes because it's super convenient to have every category of shopping in one store? Yeah sometimes but that's where the drive-up features to prevent you from doing. Walmart took me 30 minutes in the checkout lane it's not convenient to shop at Walmart it's definitely a good and get out vibe. Target doesn't take no more than 10 minutes to check out if busy in person
I do feel the inclination to spend more time in a target due to the well organized clean stores. But due to my social anxiety I do not wander too much and still try to only get what I needed and get out relatively quickly, but not as quick as i would go through a walmart as i have had multiple anxiety attacks when going through walmart before due to their crowded stores. I think you are right on with having a coffee shop in their stores encoraging people to take their time and feel welcome.
45-year-old white lady here that lives in the United States. There is one Target in my area (it's a 20-25-minute drive for me) and the rare occasions I do go in there, it's a DISASTER. Shelves throughout the store are blocked with stacked carts of merchandise, empty of merchandise or both. Rarely there is not more than 1 actual register open and the self-checkout lanes have long lines. The clothing section is messy with clothes and hangers on the ground and stuff just isn't organized at all. The shoe department is also always a giant mess with shoes and shoe boxes all over the floor. It's just not a great shopping experience. I have 2 Super Walmarts in my area; one is 20 minutes away and the other is 9 minutes away. I find them to be much neater and cleaner and the shelves are (typically) decently stocked. They also have a decent garden center with houseplants at reasonable prices. I also find the online ordering and pickup or delivery options to be much better, so I tend to shop at Walmart especially if I have groceries and household/pet supplies on my shopping list.
Walmart has actually been updating and changing their ways to become, in my opinion, more like Target. All the Walmart I know of phased out McDonald's and now they have Auntie Ann's Pretzels, Subway, and/or Dunkin' Doughnuts. I've seen more and more people getting coffee from Dunkin and just sitting and chilling out.
nothing was more shocking to me when moving in with two people from middle class/ upper midde class backgrounds than the fact they went to target instead of walmart. when i ran out of shampoo for the first time i asked my roommate if she could take me to go get some more (we're friends and i don't have a car), and i was incredibly confused when she pulled into target. i don't go there for much, but as it is a good bit closer than the walmart i have been getting my toiletries from there. the price differences are something else, it's like everything's increased at least 50%. i don't understand it
i was the dude listening to christmas music all year round, still do. they had the coolest decorations for holidays. that’s all i want from target, especially around christmas
You can get almost all of your shopping done at Target. Plus, most have a Starbucks. The prices are much cheaper than a regular grocery store. I only go to Target 🎯 once a month.
honestly one of the main reasons I love it is that it has basically everything I need 🤷🏼♀️ I genuinely like their clothes and shoes, I can buy home stuff there, groceries, medicine, makeup, cleaning stuff, it’s just the easiest place to go. plus it’s well organized, easy to find stuff, and there’s always deals in the app. the downside of all that is that it’s easy to over-consume - but if you have self-control and don’t constantly buy unnecessary things, then you’re fine 👌🏻
I hate shopping at target 😂 I always feel super anxious in the stores for some reason. Walmart isn't my favorite, but I do shop there because it's literally next door to my job and it's convenient.
When I was a kid, my mom would take me with her to target. It was a TREAT. She got me popcorn, an ICEE , and I got to ride in the cart while she shopped. I think for me it is very nostalgic to go in there.
I am at Target right now. I love everything about this store...except for the checkout. It's unreal how bad they are at managing customers. But, that said, I love everything else. I'm from Minnesota and I've been coming here since I was a baby, so perhaps I'm a bit partial...but there's really nothing like it. Walmart doesn't even compare. When I lived overseas, there was no Target, and there was no store that came even remotely close to the quality and experience. They're everywhere; it has everything; and it's such a pleasure to shop there. One of my happiest moments coming home was being able to finally shop at Target again.
Canadian GenX here, Grudge against Target for killing Zellers IYKYK, I like my Winners/Homsense. I buy Shoes, flavoured coffee, clothing stationary, gifts when I need it. While Winners has a big turn over, it's not a case of:Bored Go to Winners, its more like, need Something for my Seasonal wardrobe and a bag Caramel Drizzel, I feel lucky let's see what Winners has. Some influencers are saying Indigo is becoming Target. I love the Nota & Carta goods and have 3 pairs of Love & Lore PJs so might be on to something. Great Vidi 😎☕💋
Yes i love dunkin coffee but its still pricey. I buy folgers coffee the big tub cheaper per oz, and whatever cheap coffee creamer flavor. LOL I love target for only certain things but overall I shop around for cheapest deal and if I truly need it. Great Video.
As an American, target is a mellow experience generally. It is a sip your coffee and stroll place. Walmart is where I go if I need a tonnn of stuff (like school supplies) or if I need to be extremely thrifty. Another thing I thought of after this video is Walmart is immediately a lot. All the shelves are super super tall and it’s almost as soon as you hit the doors. Target feels like they have more space in the entrance, and it is also my experience they have more aisle space as well.
This was such a surreal video for me because the target near my house is significantly closer to it then the nearest walmart so I never once thought of target as "premium" just cheapish and easy to get to 😭 Thanks for the video! Its interesting to hear how it is for other people :D
Target in Australia is soooo different. Not nearly as many brands, and definitely no coffee shop. They have actually had to close a lot of their stores, and merge with Kmart (like our Walmart) to survive. Which is a shame. Because they had a really good line of petite clothes. I just don't think they differentiated themselves enough to be worth the extra money in today's financial climate.
Walmart has really been making improvements to be more like Target in recent years, like with their clothes and how they’re displaying them. Some Walmart stores now look like a department store in clothes, jewelry, and accessories sections. Target would and could have more locations, but they refuse to put stores with certain populations. There’s a town less than an hour from me that have been trying to get one for at least a decade, but their population isn’t high enough.
I stopped perusing the aisles in Walmart when they closed down the Self Checkout. I now go earlier in the morning, rush around and grab the things on my list, and check out before the lines get ridiculously long. I go to Target when I want to take my time and browse.
I have a Target & Walmart three minutes away from my house. On large grocery trips I go to Walmart but if I just need a few ingredients I’ll run to Target SIMPLY because it is not such a hassle to run in & run out. Walmart is always crazy busy, filled parking lot, huge store but Target is never busy & I always get a great parking spot.
I've been getting all the PSLs at local places, i think the difference is some are using "Pumpkin Spice" flavor or "Pumpkin Pie" flavor. With Target, I'm try to not go because I will aggressively buy unnecessary decor or collectibles there. There's definitely something about the perception of Target and how the stores are arranged.
New York State commenter here. I don’t get the Target obsession either. Maybe it’s my age (63), but I’ve really never loved it. I have three separate locations within 20 minutes of my home, and I still only go there occasionally for very specific things, when I know I can easily grab it there. I don’t like their grocery section, I think Walmart clothing quality is better, for what it is. I don’t like their shoes, I’m not into the home decor that so many RUclipsrs are constantly promoting, and I’m also with you that DD is better than Starbucks. 😂 I’m not bashing, just being honest. I try to love it because all the influencers make it look so appealing. 🤷♀️
I know I’m in the minority because I live in Minneapolis, where Target HQ is, so there aren’t any Walmarts super near. We do our grocery shopping at a Super Target!
The town I grew up in had an intersection with a Target, a Kmart, and a Cub Foods that were all pretty comparable in terms of size and available products. If I ever got a vote in where we went shopping, I'd pick Target. In hindsight, I realize that it mainly had to do with the sensory overload I experienced in other stores. The Target was usually less busy, had less harsh lighting, and the cart wheels didn't all squeak and rattle and make my skin crawl. 😂 But the Target I live near now feels like a mall tbh. It's HUGE and only a sliver of it is groceries. I never go there to get groceries anymore. I go there to wander around when it's dangerously cold outside and maybe I'll buy a lip balm or something. It's not really a store it's an experience lol
I'm a kiwi, (Someone from New Zealand), and my roommates friend was visiting from America. He asked where the closest target was as his phone kept coming up with a furniture store, and he was gobsmacked that Target here is infact, a furniture store.
I worked at Target briefly and it's not just the clean atmosphere that keeps you there. Notice how the stores usually only have windows at the front of the building; they use the same tactics as casinos to keep you unaware of the time so you can spend hours there without knowing it, and I often returned home after long shifts with my circadian rhythm out of sorts. Learning about just how many "brands" they own, selling them to customers who are unaware that the brands are Target exclusive was also pretty bizarre. Their advertising and brand culture are extremely effective in pulling people in, and their annual "exclusive" products keep people coming back.
As a kid, my mom only brought me to Target and never to Walmart (since it was in our nearest box store mecca), which I liked since I thought I could only consistently get Pokemon cards at that Target. What’s funny is that I HATED Target clothes and thought they looked cheap, but the Walmarts I’ve visited as an adult have impressed me with the materials and variety available.
Target is like the old indoor mall experience.
My boyfriend and I call it the “Smell candles and touch blankets” store.
I smell all the candles I stumble upon at Target!😂 whole end caps sometimes lol
this is a really good way of putting it, ive worked at walmart and target, target has way more people browsing to browse and groups here or talking for half my shift.
YES! Walmart carts SUCK
@@larissatom6910 i think costcos new carts are better lol
Target also has Caroline Carts in every store, which I really appreciate.
Thankfully we don’t have Starbucks or Target in Sweden. Or well I think there maybe is one Starbucks in Stockholm
@@blabarsris6012I guess the Swedish equivalent would be going to IKEA on the weekends (or at least it was so about a decade ago when I was a student in Linköping)
@@aesinam Yeah that sounds like something some people would do
Targets were never shut down during the pandemic. They were considered essential because of the grocery section.
Target does the marketplace thing too, it’s just less
Obvious
not me getting a Walmart ad in the middle of this video lmao
kroger for me
My local Target is pleasant to shop at because it's clean and organized and feels roomy.
I really like to go there and buy maybe one piece of fancy snacks and just touch some cute things and home decor they sell.
TRUE
Everytime I enter a Walmart my anxiety sky rockets 😭
you and my mom honestly. though she has had actual panics because theres so much going on
When I lived 10 minutes from target and 10 minutes from Walmart, I used to go to Target because it wasn’t as crowded and people were usually better behaved. But that was for leisure shopping or to only get a few items. If I had an actual grocery haul to do, I made myself go to Walmart because I knew I’d save money. Now I live rurally and go to Walmart almost daily. People here are less crazy, and the closest target is an hour away
@@daphblue yep, carts are always strung about the parking lot.
@@daphblue same here, Target 45 mins away and I don’t love it that much. Walmart and Burkes are 13 mins away so I stroll around there and kill time when I need a shopping trip to destress. I just like to look and window shop.
@@daphblue this is exactly me hahahah this is the perfect description
I worked at Target in 2014 & still have clothes that I bought from that time & they're all in wonderful condition. I wish it was still like that
They set up those carpet areas to have you stroll around more, it gives in to a sense of ease and comfort
Carpet also absorbs sound waves which makes the store overall quieter and more relaxing. Cuts down on echoing sound that makes a store noisy.
this was interesting! i think the coffee shop does add to the more “cozy” associations with target, and i’ve always felt like target was more comfortable. walmart feels more “cold” and like a warehouse because of some of the things you noted, the lighting, floors, shelves, etc. i used to also feel like target was more comfortable because it was less crowded, but lately every time i go to my local target, it’s just as crowded and overstimulating as walmart! i’m one of those ppl who just wants to get my stuff and get out in either store, so the ppl leisurely walking around with coffee in target sometimes annoy me 😂
I agree Walmart does feel cold, and warehouse like the fluorescent lights are awful too, target depending on location feels more put together and cozier
I’m in SWFL and this video is such a welcome distraction from the hurricane 🥺 love your channel and your message!!
wishing you the best and I hope you stay safe 💕
This is kind of unrelated but the “people of Walmart” page always made me feel icky even as a child. I don’t agree with taking photos of random people in public, you don’t know what’s going on with them mentally, and these people are just existing and then they get posted online solely to be made fun of…
Yeah and she forgot to mention one of the biggest (no pun intended) targets is people in bigger bodies.
@@kreneesimoI’ve never shopped at Aldi but it sounds like I need to. Is it that much cheaper than Walmart really?
@@Scoutmhen it's kind of similar to Trader Joe's, but cheaper
@MichelleHenleyJohnson. Not really cheaper in my area, Knoxville TN, on most items.
A recent example was I was looking at a Samsung tablet and the Costco version was about $20 more expensive then getting it off of Amazon
Also the fact they have so many caveats on their membership compared to other stores. I.e. you can't just show up with someone with a card and pay for your own groceries, it also has to be a credit card owned by the person with the membership.
My local Meijer is more expensive than my local Target now 😭 I miss it
When I was highschool (around 5-7 years ago) my sister and I would go to target for fun and just walk around the store.
(I am from the US)
In other words, it has the veneer of being less tacky than Walmart but ultimately is in the same overall class of store.
also i live in a smaller city and our target is SMALL, so i think it’s always felt more like a “specialty” store to me anyway. our store doesn’t have a starbucks, the beauty section feels exactly the same as walmart’s, the grocery section is almost nonexistent, and they removed the previously-huge media section in order to add more aisles for kitchenware.
it just doesn’t hold the same appeal it did when i was a child/teenager.
I go to all sorts of stores and can typically find useful clearance items. I hate spending a lot of money on things (even if I need it) and go to target sometimes. You just have to know prices. I actually don't really like Walmart anymore, it become expensive.
I’m a babysitter in the uk, and the amount of children that beg me to take them to TAHRRGITTT is insane, accent and all
Do wee have them?
@@lspbeautea4791no!
Target didn’t always have the coffee shop. I think the cost and less groceries made it feel like a special spot
Also, you're right about the convenience. In the town I work, there are 3 Walmarts!
Walmart produce is so much better than Target also
Yep same
Walmart is kind of too chaotic in my opinion.
@@PileofAshes53 yesssss!!!! Lmao
😂😂😂 I’ve literally confused the staff checking receipts because I used the digital option, he honestly didn’t understand what I was showing him
with the receipt checking, it might depend on the stores you go to, but yes, generally walmart stores are chaotic. i've worked in one. the atmosphere is much calmer in target.
i feel like this is the same for target too tho
Many people view shopping as a way to relieve stress and improve their mood. The excitement of finding good deals and trendy items can be uplifting.
Target girl here...since the '80s. Way cleaner and nicer than Walmart. Walmart is a chore while Target is an experience.
"Target girl" aka a snob
14:52 walmarts used to have carpets in the clothing sections. and to be honest, I'm old enough to remember when walmart and target had much more similar feels. walmart has now strayed into an industrial feel ("welcome to walmart, get your shit and get out") and target has stayed on brand and not strayed from the more "department store" esq feel.
I love target, but i’m not obsessed and only go when I actually need something. Personally not a fan of walmart at all!
I am a Canadian living in the US. Both Walmart and Target are close by. I go to both stores depending on what needs to be purchased
Really enjoyed this one. Thanks!
I might have another theory as to why Walmart's demographic is older:
my grandmother gets a rewards card from her insurance (Medicaid/ medicare) that she can use ONLY at Walmart. She complains often that she would like to shop at other "nicer" stores with fresher produce but with her limited mobility & even more limited income it's just more convenient to get everything at Walmart. I've tried getting her to try ordering groceries on her phone for delivery but she likes the experience of going out & physically picking out her own groceries (especially produce)
ohhh this is a really interesting idea
i've heard bad things about getting your produce delivered bc the picker might not care that it's gone bad.
It still is in my mind. It’s just a rudimentary place to shop. Whoever finds Target exciting needs a hobby 😪
@@laurasutcliffe723 Yes also from WA and Target didn't have this bougie reputation when I was a kid, it's so interesting to see it now because it just seemed like a discount store to me.
this is still my perception of target lol it's not the best but not the worst
Yeah we don't have one near us either - and that has been my perspective too.
Same
I have this exact same experience
I shop primarily at Aldi (groceries) and Target (everything else) in Michigan. There’s very little difference in cost between Target and Walmart health/beauty, cleaning products, etc. now, and Aldi groceries are the cheapest of all. We also have Meijer, which is even more expensive than Target now. I find the small cost difference between Target and Walmart justifiable for me because I often get treated poorly by Walmart employees and shoppers for being queer. Target has always felt safer.
You and another RUclipsr has HELPED ME SAVE MONEY TO THE EXTREME BECAUSE YOU MADE ME SEE I DONT NEED SO MUCH STUFF😭
🥰
For me target groceries are the same price as at Walmart and I like the quality of market pantry. I only go when I actually need something however 😅
I will go to Target instead of Walmart if I have to find something at a big chain box store that I can't find local or at the co-op I work at but mainly because Walmart has kind of sided politically with the right wing and target has at least in certain avenues taken a more left-leaning stance on things.
I don’t know if it’s because I’m from Europe but going to the supermarket to shoot TikTok reels is so weird to me
Same! I would love to see some behind the scenes. Someone please go to a Target for a day and record all those Tiktokers 😂
It’s weird for like 90% of the population that doesn’t make online content regardless of location lol
This probably sounds crazy but if I stay inside of a Walmart too long, I get dizzy and eventually nauseated. I can’t explain it but if I go to Walmart, I get what I need and get out. At Target, I casually stroll and spend way more money.
I agree that the Dunkin pumpkin spice is way better- as are their other fall flavors. They're also considerably cheaper, which is always a bonus.
My first time experience with Target was during recession. Ex got a gift card and we went. The prices gave me sticker shock.
if you think that’s expensive try going to a midwestern hyvee lol
@@LadyTempeste I'm in the midwest and I don't know what this is
I recently realized that Walmart and Target prices aren’t too far off.
The crazy thing is g is that the price difference between Walmart and Target is cents on the dollar and it really isn’t that big
I can count on my hands the number of times I’ve been to target in my life… I barely feel the need to go there
The first step of getting away from Amazon and the conglomerate of Walmart for in person stores was literally Target for me. They also didn't charge for drive up fees and it stopped me from overspending
I really do like their stars in above and loungewear brands.
I will go to Target 100 times over instead of Walmart. Walmart is chaotic and unpleasant.
they have armed guards at one the walmarts near me 😅 extremely unpleasant and anxiety inducing
As an european the content about target always gives me the vibe *shopping as a hobby*
I go to target and other similar stores.... maybee..... 3x a year. Im good on overconsumption and plastic thanks!
Walmart has actually been updating and changing their ways to become, in my opinion, more like Target. All the Walmart I know of phased out McDonald's and now they have Auntie Ann's Pretzels, Subway, and/or Dunkin' Doughnuts. I've seen more and more people getting coffee from Dunkin and just sitting and chilling out.
seeing a new video from Shawna - and having time to watch it before having to go from home >>>>>>>>>>>
nothing was more shocking to me when moving in with two people from middle class/ upper midde class backgrounds than the fact they went to target instead of walmart. when i ran out of shampoo for the first time i asked my roommate if she could take me to go get some more (we're friends and i don't have a car), and i was incredibly confused when she pulled into target.
i don't go there for much, but as it is a good bit closer than the walmart i have been getting my toiletries from there. the price differences are something else, it's like everything's increased at least 50%. i don't understand it
I can't stand the vibe in Walmart! It feels rushed, sparse, and depressing. It just feels off.
i was the dude listening to christmas music all year round, still do. they had the coolest decorations for holidays. that’s all i want from target, especially around christmas
This was such a surreal video for me because the target near my house is significantly closer to it then the nearest walmart so I never once thought of target as "premium" just cheapish and easy to get to 😭
Thanks for the video!
And me? I haven't been inside a target in over a year. I hate it. I hate big, busy stores tho and I know I don't need anything so I don't bother.
We do our grocery shopping at a Super Target!
home depot has essential items for the relator market (construction, home reno etc.,). so it makes sense
