Literally one of the reasons Halloween is my favorite holiday is because there’s no damn obligations. No trying to find someone a present they probably don’t even need. Just fun decorations if you want and a bag of candy. Not every holiday needs to turn into fucking Christmas

    • @stebu178

I am almost sixty. When I was a kid, I would get one "main" present and two or three small things for Christmas. Not even close to the number or cost of the items in these boo baskets. Halloween was a holiday for kids to trick or treat. People hardly decorated. I'm not saying that adults decorating and dressing up for Halloween is bad. But things are getting out of hand. And people don't realize this is all run by retailers who want more profits. We are being coerced and scammed and don't even realize it.

And if I do update my decorations, I usually go to the thrift store. Where I donate and get new things. They give out a yellow piece of paper that you follow the link. You add the value of your donation, and you can print out the receipt for tax purposes.
There are ways to reuse, create fall decor out of cardboard, or even mundane items around your home. Plus, donating and getting an item of similar value does help with the planet, and you are buying consciously and intentionally. I hope more donation/thrift stores do this for anyone interested. I have no clue who started it each year but you were supposed to “boo” two houses then put the note on your door letting everyone know you already got booed. It was just a little basket of candy or toys for the kids in the house, and you spent maybe $10 total lol. I don't know how many years ago this was, but this whole "You have been booed" thing went around at my workplace one year. And yes, the idea of it might've been nice except I in no way had the money to "pass it on" to the next person. I was in my first marriage at the time and finances were bad. Our account was often at zero or in the red. So here I was broke as could be and I get the little "You've been booed, pass it on!" note on my desk along with a little bag of goodies (candy for sure, but also some Halloween decor) and I just remember how horrible it made me feel because I wasn't able to pass it on. This was a time when the contents of the basket were maybe $20? But that was a lot more than we had spare.

Yeah, we’ve really cut back on gift giving. My adult son (still in his early 20s) will get cash or something that he needs, in the $60-75 range, plus a few treats. My elderly mom & I are regifting for Xmas this year, I keep finding gifts that were given but never used lol. Tbh, these days our big Christmas treat is getting a decadent BBQ meal (we celebrate at lunch on the 24th or on the 26th, my son has little sisters at his dads so they get traditional Christmas), which is a treat that our frugal family loves!

We actually did these when I lived in Texas with our neighbours and friends but it was a lot different. It was usually a candy basket with mostly candy or home made treats and sometimes like socks and pencils for the kids and maybe some wine or something for the adults. But it wasn’t just a basket you randomly gave to people. What made it a boo basket is that you would drop it on their front porch, ring the doorbell, then run away. That’s why it was called a boo basket because it randomly appear on your porch and you wouldn’t know who gave it to you. This was way back in 2005

I had this reflection a while back when thinking about guest bathroom restock videos, but I don’t think I’ve commented it before. But the boo baskets, much like the guest bathroom restocks, are less about giving nice things to your friends but to flex on your friends that not only can you afford nice things, you can just give them away as well. Posting it as a tiktok achieves that same goal, but allows that flex to reach a much wider audience. However, it’s interesting, that they’re gifts, because to me it distances the creators from the wealth displays of 2015-2017 beauty/lifestyle influencers, who would share the same or similar content but for themselves. It’s a way to display wealth but appear selfless because though they have these expensive items, it’s not for them! It’s for their friends! It’s a more digestible way for an audience to handle being flexed on. Same content, different angle.

It was just a nice way to present us with the things we already usually got around Halloween. People are doing wayyyyy too much 😭 There also was this thing in like the 2010s where you'd put together a small basket full of treats, drinks, and maybe a candle and you'd leave it at a neighbors house with a sign saying they've been boo'd and to spread the kindness. It was mostly a thing in rich neighborhoods so I never personally experienced it but yeah it seemed sweet. Now it's just people being selfish. It's sad lowkey.

When she had no reason to feel so because she made a great basket, slippers she had already been planning to buy her daughter, mascara she knew her daughter had run out of, one pair of socks, and lots of candy because that's what children want on Halloween, all likely to be used or in the spirit of the holiday, and all catered to her daughter (compared to some of the other clips where people are preparing baskets based on "this is what _I'd_ want" instead of "what my friend would want"...) But because Tiktok has totally distorted the meaning of simple, even people who follow the trend and try to make a thoughtful gift are made to feel it's simple just because it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars.

I feel bad enough that I spend so much time at work away from my kiddo, the last thing I need is for her to grow up asking why I’m not getting lavish baskets for her for every holiday that ultimately wouldn’t even bring her genuine lasting joy or show my love for her.

The thing that drives me crazy about these is that a lot of the items aren’t even Halloween related. I was imagining candy, some little Halloween knickknacks, and maybe some kind of spooky plush. Maybe $30 to $50 max depending on what people can afford. We really do not need people establishing new obligatory gift-giving traditions and they especially don’t need to be making all of their examples $200+.

We did boo baskets growing up but it usually consisted of baking and decorating cookies then maybe gifting a halloween decor item and you anonymously left it on a doorstep for a neighbor and they were supposed to reuse the basket and pass it onto the next neighbor. This trend lost its wholesomeness.

With 13 and 18 year old kids, who we've tried to raise "green," we already feel pressed when it's time to come up with "winter gifts" (why the genericness of that is a whole rabbit hole for another comment) because... they have pretty much all of their wants, and their needs are always met. I can't begin to imagine what I could put in a Boo Basket for either of them - and if I managed to pull that together, it would undoubtedly leave me further stressed come wintertime, because I'd be in the negative for ideas at that point 😅

I have exactly one (1) pair of seasonal Halloween socks, and I do wear them year-round. They have a silly little pun on them and it always leads to people asking about them and every time I have to say “it makes more sense during Halloween” 😂
I totally agree with you on the seasonal wardrobe items though. I want everything in my closet to be wearable year-round, otherwise it’s just taking up space.

I will not be starting this trend with my kid. Consumerism is out of control. We will be doing it old school over here. Scary movies, popcorn, pumpkin carving, apple picking and the biggest fun of all dressing up and going door to door Halloween night. I think the baskets are nice but once you start this trend your kids/friends/spouse will expect it and I don’t think this is what Halloween is about. Making memories and being present with family and friends can never be put into a basket.

I remember one year in school my mom made me a valentine's gift. It was basically a glass tray she had for baking with these clear diamond beads in it that she had from my parent's 25th anniversary party, then she laid out a few peanut butter cups and cut out red hearts from a piece of construction paper. It was so cute! And so thoughtful that i had something for valentine's day before i went to school. And she really didnt purchase anything besides the candy. The rest of the stuff she had in the house that she thought to put together as a gift

My old apartment complex did “boo baskets”. Basically neighbors would choose to gift someone a basket, then if you get one you’re supposed to make one for someone else etc. It was actually a really fun thing. I think we just reused the same basket that was given to us if I recall correctly. It was a fun way to bring neighbors together. The gifts weren’t super expenses. Just maybe some candy and fall themed soaps or something.

Someone else made a similar comment about if a kid goes to school and tells their friends what they got, they'll make their friends feel bad. Oh well! Not everyone can afford to send their kids to private school, should I and all the other parents who can, pull their kids out so others don't feel bad? Do you have a car? Stop driving it, a lot of low income families can't afford one!!!!

I do think that the boo/fall baskets are a great idea for birthday, celebratory event gift (wedding, anniversary, starting a business), an anniversary or just doing something nice for someone if the person genuinely likes Halloween and/fall. But the trendiness, counsumness, guilt giving, and creating a gift giving season where there isn’t one is where I have an issue with it.

I think the origin of this (at least from my perspective in Maryland) is from the practice of creating a surprise basket for someone with a paper flyer that says “you’ve been booed!” and encouragement to make one for someone else in the group, like neighborhood, workplace, etc. There’s also an additional flyer to add that says “I’ve been booed” that you’re supposed to hang up if you’ve already received one so you don’t get more than one. We used to do this at work years ago (at least 10 yrs) and it was so fun, and it was also intended to be (and was) inexpensive and thoughtful. Think “pumpkin trick or treat basket and a bag of candy” not “I’m going broke with this status symbol gift.” I’m so sad to see “boo baskets” have turned into this monstrosity. 😢

I heard boo basket and thought it was like the thing we did when I was kids: starting Oct 1, little ghosts would start appearing on people's doors. They said something like, "You've been spooked! Give a small treat to two more houses!" And by Halloween, everyone had given something like 1 dozen homemade cookies to 2 other families, and all houses in the neighborhood had little ghosts on their doors.
    Sadly, this is not it.

One thing i come back to after each vid I've seen of yours is, though i do appreciate discussing specific examples of overconsumption and how malicious covert marketing tactics can get, we aren't actually diving to the root of the problem and understanding that we will keep finding new trends to complain about until we start being responsible and advocating for ourselves by ignoring the siren call of marketing and advertising, creating and STICKING TO a budget, and start "revenge saving" instead of "doom spending." I know we are constantly manipulated by people who get paid a lot of money in exchange for getting us to shell out ours willingly, and it's easier said than done to be the one taking on the responsibility of saying no to predatory sales tactics instead of getting these companies to start acting ethically, but that's how it is in a capitalistic society. Companies will keep getting rewarded for getting their customers in debt so they will not change, at least not until we start conning them at their own game and hoarding our money. WE are responsible for putting up boundaries, for the companies and our loved ones who want to push us to spend our hard-to- come-by money. As nice as it feels to be able to point the finger at influencers and CEOs and slimy sales people, we cannot get distracted by how unfair we perceive their behavior to be if that comes with the risk of detracting from our own autonomy in changing and hopefully breaking the cycle, at the very least for ourselves if nothing else. Because the way we gain our power back is by refusing to give away our power to these sales and marketing teams and ceos and influencers etc

I have a feeling that a lot of these "trends" are started by companies who stand to profit off of them, similar to the way that Valentine's day, Mother's/Father's day were created and commercialized to boost profits following the post-holiday seasons. I've often wondered if the whole "National Girlfriend/Boyfriend Day" thing was a failed attempt to create another commercial holiday, which is now causing a push to add more consumerism to the already existing consumer holidays. I wish we could go back to allowing holidays to be celebrations and events instead of profit opportunities for greedy corporations. I don't enjoy holidays as an adult the way I did as a child because I feel like everyone is just out to get my money.

The second one is more like a hygge cozy fall basket, which is also a big comforting watch for many folks but more consumerist as this focus on products versus the use of the products (wearing uggs drinking out of the pumpkin mug in a comfy setting). My non consumerist frugal mom gave my sister and I Christmas stockings well into our thirties but not pricey, mainly treats and snack with an ornament. It was a tradition but not performative at all. It’s the SM aspect that is also making this trend feel like too much.
